Celtic Diary Thursday August 14: Ain’t So Bad , After All.

Celtic overcame a stuffy St. Johnstone last night with a fairly convincing 3-0 second half romp. alright, maybe the words “convincing 2 and “romp ” are taking it a little too far, but it was impressive nonetheless.

Saints decided to crowd out any Celtic forward who came within twenty yards of their goal in the first half, which meant Celtic had all the possession but none of the penetration, though James Forrest, restored to the team after injury-and credit to him, he never got hurt last night-was given a fre role and he tormented the home side from all angles, but often running into a blind alley. Kris Commons suffered from enthusiastic man marking as well, so it was a bit of a worry as to where the goals would come from as the teams went in for their half time tea and sandwiches.

However, the nerves disappeared from both players and supporters when a saints defender dallied on the ball and Commons slid in to capitalise on the edge of the box, and when the ball broke to Anthony Stokes he rounded the keeper and eased the ball home.

Celtic were a different side after that. Partly because the three forwards were all replaced over a fifteen minute spell, and the lively and effective Derk Boerrigter earned a penalty after he was clipped in the box, and Nir Bitton, now with two “t’s ” in his name, converted for 2-0.

Then, with substitute Berget looking lively, and Stefan Johansen relieved of his duty to feed Kris Commons with every pass, we were even treated to the rare sight of a Celtic forward heading towards goal when the Norwegian had a half chance.

Calum MacGregor completed the scoring with a precision shot from the edge of the box which was aimed just where it would slither through the keepers hands.

Thats how I saw it, anyway.

So, is he still a lucky manager, or a tactical genius ?

It could be a bit of both, the decision to replace the front line was not only brave, but astute. Celtic were far more direct and certainly a lot quicker with the introduction of Berget and Boerrigter, and if we can get a big striker in , then we might well have a chance yet of group stage football in Europe.

Craig Gordon looked fit, sharp and commanding at the back, and actually gave the impression that he’d been in the team for a lot longer than he has. We might just have done some good business there.

Of course, we might be pleased with the way its turned out. but Sky TV, covering the game for us lazy buggers who can’t be arsed with a long midweek trip to the game, had in the studio Neil McCann, who gave us a very good reason to stay off the drink after his post match rant.

rab c

In it, he called Boerrigter a cheat, several times and became quite animated. In much the same way as commentators didn’t do when a Hibernian player was sent off during their recent Cup game against Second Rangers.

McCann, who allegedly received a tax free lump sum loan from Old Rangers as part of his wages, would know a cheat when he saw one , I suppose, but his venomous diatribe at the Dutchman seemed to be personal.

See ?

Still, no doubt the SFA compliance office will be looking closely at why Dunfermlines assistant manager is calling a player of another team a cheat.

Boerrigter was clipped, thats evident, and there was a wee nudge as well, so its a penalty. Maybe a soft one, but still a penalty.

Mind you, at least one St. Johnstone fan was unhappy, and took to the streets to complain;

Other than that, its three points in the bag, a huge confidence boost for players and fans alike, and now, when I have to get up at 4am on saturday, i can look forward to the trip and the game with optimism if not confidence.

And no doubt Fergus McCann will be relieved as well, otherwise he faced being kidnapped and used as a figurehead for the next revolution at Celtic…

Speaking of Saturday, anyone else going to the game needs to be aware of this;

Info for Sat, Springfield Rd from London Rd to Dalmarnock is closed until Aug 29, please avoid this route to prevent delays

Anyhoo, stung by Diary criticism about his lyrical waxing, Deila instead spoke to the club website;

The first 20 minutes of the first half was ok but the last 25 minutes of it wasn’t the way I want to see my team”,

“But in the second half we started to up the intensity and pressure and got more movement. It opened them up more and in the end we got the chances we needed and won the game.

“The second half was more like how I want to see my team, but we need to work more on the fitness and pattern and transition to improve. But that will come.

“I am calm tonight but I’m not unbelievably happy as I don’t think we performed fantastically – but we are on our way.

“I have absorbed a lot and observed the way we played before and how we want to play. It takes time, and this what I have been saying all the time.

“Tonight wasn’t perfect but the second half was a step in the right direction, and I know it’s going to be very good in a few months.”

Its hard to disagree with any of that. He looks like he’s adapting a little to life at Celtic, and is winning his battle with the dressing room.

Missing from the line up last night were Charlie mulgrew, suspended, Efe Ambrose, and Leigh Griffiths, apparently ill. Which presumably means someone is sick of him. He seemed okay in the bookies yesterday…

At the time of writing , there is no official news on whether or not Legia Warsaw have been successful in their appeal to UEFA after they fielded a suspended player. Indications from Poland are that the appeal has failed.

I rang the Daily Record to ask if they had heard anything, but none of their hacks were available. For whatever reason.

Celtic have had another request for a safe standing section turned down by the Glasgow City Council. Well, they don’t need the ground anymore now, do they ?

There can be no harm surely in creating a section for those who want to stand up during the game, which would allow them to sing and dance and possibly even create an atmosphere , and maybe the club should put a bit of pressure on them. Its all very nice having a tunnel that leads directly to city chambers underneath our boardroom, but whats the point if you never use it ?

Honestly, whats the point in making all that money if you can’t use it to oil the wheels of progress ? Get them round for a chat.

Safe standing is the way forward.

That isn’t Celtic fans, I’ve no idea where it is. Keith Jackson put it on twitter.

This is safe standing, at Perth last night.

James Forrest in the Messi role was very good.

I get the impression even if we had MESSI in the Messi role then Deadhead would still shout “SHYTE!!” at every touch

Is your day job walking around with a placard telling us the end of the world is nigh?

Worked our way into the game, defended from the front, exposed the St. J CB with a great tackle then built on it.

2 decisions for the ref to make, we got the benefit of the doubt when we don’t usually. Some cracking substitutions made – at the right time – and we looked very much better.

Our new pony tailed viking looked to have a better touch than Stokes (who scored a good goal), and even looked as if he could head the ball, ffs a Celtic centre forward who can head a ball and is over 2 feet tall? Whatever next?

If Rony was ‘lucky’ that’s brilliant. I LIKE lucky.

We were very poor last night.
3 points in the end but to add to my concern about where our club is hesded ( I welcome Fergus comments today) I am now very concerned about this team. We will win the title but we look a real poor lot.

Thought there was some positives to take from last night, V.D. played well, I thought Stokes had a great first half and wee James even showed up and didny get injured, and Gordon put a v confident performance in. Negatives are we are far to soft in central midfield, Johanson struggles without broonie alongside and we gave the ball away far to cheaply, I’d like to see a Good centre midfielder brought in asap, other than that it’s onwards n upwards. HAIL HAIL, ROLL IN SATURDAY..

I managed to watch the game but I can’t say I was too impressed. 11 vs 11, St Johnstone created the better chances, the sort of chances Stevie May was burying last season and Celtic look stifled in the final third with far too many passes missing their target.
I thought the ref was our best player, if the decisions had went the other way round I would have been as raging as a hun hearing Legia got kicked out.
There was visible improvement from previous games, we didn’t ship half a dozen goals, the defence looked slightly better but we’re still too vulnerable.
Might not have been the performance I wanted but it’s a step in the right direction.

Stevie Mays record against Celtic was nearly as good as Kris Boyds.

Aye. We’ve flogged that particular dead horse when we bought the likes of Laursen and Momo Sylla. It didn’t work then and it won’t work now.

Neil McCann = Odious little shit !

The forward line gave away possession way too often , risking the counter attack ! we really need to sort it out before Europe – or we will be well pumped again !!!

I’m not normally the doom n gloom type, but I’m not fooled by last night’s scoreline. I really struggled to see what the game plan was and individual quality (or lack of) won us the game. Nothing to do with tactics, planning, shape etc. First time ever I think I’ve not been excited (either positively or negatively) about a new fitba season. What’s happening right now is totally uninspiring. I’ve said previously this isn’t even the players or even the management or possibly not even Lawwell. All of them are working for a boss and ultimately all the way up to a board who decide the strategy. That’s where the long term problem lies.

I still have faith though I am still not sure in what. There are signs and potents but no definite future. We are a bit like our new turf, potentially promising great things but still bedding in with no certainty it will be a high quality finish, still too fresh to be certain of the final outcome.

My use of a lot of stills is in the hope your presently troubled heart may be stilled once more, your faith restored and your love extended to Peter Lawwell, the board, our new management and the players. If you have it in you, you could even show some mercy to the afflicted TV pundits who seem to be overburdened by your kind consideration.

As for myself, I am off to Specsavers for, unlike everyone else, I thought we played better in the first half with nothing to show for it. On other occasions, sponsor Specsaver may well have given a foul against Commons for a back tackle when he dispossessed Anderson; booked Boaconstrictor for diving or even for pretending to be a footballer (I have had shorter clips at the barbers and harder bumps from my feather duster); Mannus might not have been so keen to flash himself at McGregor’s balls and St. Johnstone May have scored a few. I think 3-0 did not just flatter us, it covered our lucky cake in icing.

The photo reminds me of Jesus just as he was about to be betrayed by a nasty kiss. Look out Tommy!

The picture of fans appearing to be standing on a grassy upper tier of a stand is from the Coventry City game last night.

The Coventry fans are actually standing on a grassy knoll behind the ground, in protest at their club still playing ‘home’ matches at Northampton Town’s ground, creating an interesting visual juxtaposition!

They won the match, we dont deserve to be through but its nothng to do wiyh us, they only have themselves to blame. We were a laughing stock by playing so poorly against an average team, but they are the laughing stock for such a stratospheric fuck up putting themselves out. Who made the fuck up? And I see their cuddly sporting fans have forced a club employee and her family to flee the city? Fuck thum. And Maribor would have got a bye if we forfeited the game, UEFA would have fined / punished us and for what – another team’s arse up. Now UEFA need to look at the ineligible players that played for the huns for 20 years and apply the same laws of the game.

Just a lucky break but let’s not waste it. I still think crap refereeing in the away leg (red card and 2 penalties)was also not fair so this has evened out. We are much better than the 6-1 agg.If we lose to Maribor, then we go straight into Europe League group stages and could therefore play Legia again! I don’t know what to expect from Maribor. Last night? Shaky until the second goal. I like Griffiths and Stokes on either side of Commons. We also need some holding/passing midfield although 4-3-3 might work most times in SPL. A good night’s work but well short of what we can do. We do miss Skoosh.

celtsfan67

Badly need a midfielder. Oh – and a striker (a good one!).

Sigh – oh for Mcstay, Aitken, Burns and Mclair right now (and Scott Brown of course.)

God, i’ve just typed that and realised how shite we are.

We are never gonna win the CL (well not in the next 10 years or so!) but please spend some of OUR money on the first team. Don’t loan and develop other teams players – no. That’s just silly.

Legia can fuck right off. They made the mistake. Their fans should be ashamed of the club right now – open letters to the opposition, appeals to UEFA……gimme a break. Sometimes in life you have to take a step back, look around, realise you’ve fucked up bad and then move on.

We will beat Maribor. But will we avoid utter humiliation in the group stages?? I’m not so sure…………over to you Peter.
