Celtic Diary Friday August 1: Celtic in Southampton Takeover Bid ?

A Celtic Park insider revealed plans to move the club to the English Premier League are well under way ! The surprise revelation comes as Southampton announce that they will sign a defender and a goalkeeper this weekend…

Our man in the know says its all part of a massive Lawwell-Desmond plot to first move all the players to the south coast, before putting in a takeover bid for the club itself, using their own money which they have raised by selling all their players , and then  merging the two into a new company, buying the FA membership and history of Southampton, renaming it Celtic, and finally selling the ground at St. Marys and relocating to Glasgow.

We hear the club have taken specialist advice for this procedure…

I’ve two things to do today, first theres the diary, then theres a sample article in the style and quality of the main stream media as I submit my CV to replace Hugh Keevins as a reporter and broadcaster.

Lets hope I don’t get the two mixed up.

After the Warsaw debacle the other night, Ronny Deila doesn’t have far to look if he needs advice. Former manager Neil Lennon has given us his thoughts, presumably because he hasn’t got anything else to do.

“There’s always a transitional period at a club like Celtic.

“Ronny’s not really had enough time to work out what his best team is yet.

“It’s always good to freshen things up, and there’s no better time to do it than this time of year.

“The important thing is they can hold on to some players as well.

“But, if there’s no Champions League football, that’s going to be difficult.”

“They’re not out of it by any means, but they’ve got a mountain to climb.

“I know it’s Murrayfield, but still, anything could happen.

“It’s disappointing, but not insurmountable.”

Which is all very non committal, and far better than refusing to talk to the press… then he was asked about why he left ( ha, “left “)

“I had my own reasons for leaving, and they were varying,” he explained.

“I had 14 great years as a player, coach and manager. It was time for me to move on.

“The club understood that, and I had great people in the background working with me.”

But of course, the question about a supposed lack of investment was asked, and he had to answer it;

” It wasn’t the sole reason, but it may have been one of the reasons.”

 So , for all the headlines, and all the criticism of him for perhaps speaking out of turn and putting more pressure on his successor, he hasn’t really said anything. Except this bit;

“I wouldn’t say it was inevitable but I think it might have been on the cards,” he said, conveniently forgetting the arse he made of the last campaign, when he, er , went with two in the middle in Amsterdam.

 So, the press asked for his opinion on the new manager-in a roundabout way, while visitors at the Glasgow 2014 bowls were reluctant  given his flamboyant appearance, to even ask him where the burger stall was,

Looks like he hasn’t entirely given up on the calendar industry.

 Then theres real advice, from someone who has been there, done it, and wore the tracksuit;

Barry Ferguson:

I know all about the pressure Deila is under..

I could see same

look in Big Eck’s eyes

Barry, who recently lost his job as manager of Blackpool, and left the club in such a mess, they only have eight signed players for the new season, is obviously the man to help;

I’ve been there, right in the thick of it on nights such as Wednesday when the Deila’s team was thrashed 4-1 by Legia Warsaw.

I’m delighted to say that in my days at Ibrox I never experienced such a heavy defeat.

Well, has he or hasn’t he ? Theres no point in asking Cap’n Baz. He won’t remember. And if you put any pressure on him, he’ll nip home, put on his tracksuit, and fling a kebab at you.

The list of players rumoured to be leaving / fed up/sulking/ continues to grow. There isn’t enough room for all of them, so we’ll just mention the “A’s ”  today.

Adam Matthews is expected to have his head turmed by an offer, Anthony Stokes is wanted by a number of mid table EPL sides, and Amido Balde is off to Lokeren for £2m ! Well, according to this he is;

Balde article

If that one is right, then no-one has any right to ever criticise anyone at Celtic for their business sense.

The usual suspects are still either going, gone or not staying, which might all sound the same, but theres a slight difference between the three.

Denny Johnstone, the young forward has gone, to Birmingham, Fraser Forster is going ( probably ) and Charlie Mulgrew is not staying. He told someone in a shop a while ago he thinks its time for the last big contract, which isn’t going to happen at Celtic. ( So it must be true ) . Theres not much more detail to that story, as Chuck had left the wean in the car and had to nip off sharpish.

The press will be delighted with the stories of unrest. After all, theres never smoke without fire, and when John Collins is involved its more likely than not there’ll be dressing room bust ups.

Celtic face Tottenham in Helsinki tomorrow, or Helsinki in Tottenham. I couldn’t care less which it is. But wherever it is, I suggest the management team sits down with the senior players and has a clear the air talk, and then present a show of unity to everyone else.

Its called growing up.

The Commonwealth Games may be taking up all the back pages  just now, but it won’t be long before they need some stories to fill those spaces, and Deila could do without the extra pressure.

Speaking of the games, is it right that Usain Bolt called them “shit ” ? He ought to show a little more respect to Scotland, and Glasgow, and remember up there the word is “shite ”

Sometimes after a bad defeat its best to step away, gain some persective and re appraise with fresh eyes, where things may not be quite so doom and gloom. So I’ve stepped away, but its still doom and gloom.

If you watch the video of Lenny with STV there is a very telling little “yeah” before the answer that Ralph has printed above – asked if lack of investment was a factor, Lenny says “yeah..I had my own reasons..” I know its just a word, but I think that was a big insight into the reality of what was going on.

The result the other night has been on the cards for some time, we were pretty lucky to qualify last year, and were lets be honest, miles off it when we got into the group stage. From what I consider the high point of the last couple of years, not BArca, but Spartak away, we have stripped the squad and brought in inferior replacements, so the cuffing of the other night was a disaster waiting to happen, and one our board has brought upopn us. So the board are the main focus of my anger.

However, the new boss didnt cover himself in glory either… “moonbeam” quotes in the press on the day of the game about dominating Barca at some point in the future, rather than focus on the game in hand, playing a guy who didnt even know the names of his team mates he was so newly arrived, dropping solid, relaible Izzy and playing Matthews out of position, leaving Commons, who technical player that he is, has zero pace and so canot be a lone striker, up top when Efe got sent off, letting Kayal appear on the pitch – a total headless chicken, playing a style beyond what our players can actually do rather than try keeping it tight and playing on the break, and persisitng with this even when 2-1 down with ten men. If we d got that result it would have been ok, but really it could have been 8 by the end and we kept repeating the same stupid errors.
And the players, whether or not they are off – and who could blame them – they are still being paid by celtic and are professionals. The lack of fight, passion, on field organisation, desire to get a result in a huge game – what in the actual F**k.
People ahve been saying Mowbray – I m getting Barnes vibes off all this – a hipster boss insisting on playing fancy formations despite the evidence in front of your eyes our players arent suited to it, and lots of talk of “jam tommorrow”

If thsi under investment is part of some master plan we havnet been told – please tell us, if there is another reason we are needing money we dont know about, please tell us, but for the love of God, please dont keep leaking “exclusives” about £4.5 million pound strikers or players we are lining up. Over teh past three years precisely none of these ahve come off,a dn st some point you cant say it was bad luck we didnt get them signed and must admit it was only ever horse sh*t to begin with, designed only to placate us / eke more money out of us.

Sorry for the long rant, hope it goes up, but aI dotn feel any better having written it.

We might score three at Murrayfield, bad as we were the other night.

But we have the return of our old “friend” the Celtic sieve, so I have no confidence at all we’ll manage to keep a clean sheet. Every goal the other night had at least one, often more, horrific, anmateurish, tragi -comical piece of defending, and next week we have the penalty conceeding colussus, Charlie lined up as CB, given we only have two proper ones in our squad – one of whom plays right back for his country. *sigh*

Thats a good point, we don’t have an international centre half. Legia game shows Mulgrew can’t even cover the position to close out a game, Lustig (brilliant at RB) doesn’t have the positional sense do deal with inside passes or crosses.
If Van Dijk goes then I hope some of the young players are confident enough to deal with being thrown in at the deep end / first team. I, personally, think Darnell Fisher coud do a job there if Ronny can get him to keep shape in that position.
Ronny played centre half, so I would expect to see the sort of marking and positional improvements I was going on about last season, buiding on Danny McGrain’s good work rather than just picking a centre half to cover the captaincy.

The issue hear is all the Celtic boards have sold the fans short. Be it the seventies eighties, nineties or naughtiest there has not been an attempt to make Celtic the team the fans deserve. Over the years we have sold Hay, Macari, Dalglish and so on. Bar the period in the early noughties there has been no real investment on the park. it is a ‘ Fools and Horses business. I am sick and tired of it will be alright on the night, so far it has not. The sevco situation from 2000 has covered over the lack of ambition?

Cartvale,100% correct.
The Celtic boards have always short-changed the fans.
Lenny knew they were CHEATING us.Thus his 6M striker statement.The money is their.10M spent on the spine of the team,partner for Virgil,creative midfielder,and physical target man.That would have been to see us through to the groups.
CL groups should be a MUST for a club and fanbase with our
size.
We should PROTEST in the lovely ‘ Celtic Way ‘ against our club’s hierarchy,AS THEY ARE SOLELY TO BLAME FOR THE DIRE
POSITION WE FIND OURSELVES IN !!

The europa league league is no substitute for Champions league,especially in financial terms ,even if we got to the final.feel iv,e wasted money again on a season book ,and got fuck all in return,while pirate pete flogs our players for less than there worth,and replaces them with cheap rubbish

As some have alluded to, I think we might feel a bit better if the board were to come out and give us the truth on the finance situation because all we know is we have received a lot of money in past 2 years from UCL and player sales with not much outgoings. Yes, season book sales are down, the price was cut, but we should still be healthy enough to buy some value for money players.
To be treated with contempt is the most insulting part, many of the supporters are educated enough, with professional jobs in the business world etc, to understand basic economics and the reality of our current financial restraints so please fucking fill in the blanks for us Peter. Oh and don’t forget to include your huge bonus in the numbers.

That said, Ronny made a multitude of errors in the game with player and system selection, but as a rookie in Euro football maybe its something he had to learn a la WGS and Lenny. All is not lost if he understands his mistakes and gets the right team on the pitch next week.

By the way, the price of the new 3rd strip is taking the piss….i still bought right enough, but had a wee protest in my own heid.

Turning over a 3 goal deficit against a side of their quality is not beyond this Celtic side.
We were very poor as a team in Poland the formation was I think wrong and player selection worse still.
We have no option but to go on the offensive from the off and with Ambrose out I think we would be better dropping Mulgrew back and going with a 3-5-2 with both Griffiths and Stokes as the front pairing.
If Ronny is wanting things sped up in Midfield then Mulgrew is not the answer in there.
