Celtic Diary Saturday August 24

Manager Neil Lennon has signed a new one year rolling contract, and wishes to stress that he hasn’t had a pay rise. While the rest of us scratch our heads and wonder why he didn’t ask victor wanyamas agent to do his negotiations for him, the manager spoke candidly, and hardly glanced nervously to the side of him at all.

‘There is no extra remuneration,’

‘It is not, unfortunately, a bumper deal that I have signed.

‘It is the same contract. There were just some legal stipulations that I wanted tweaked a little bit. I signed it on Friday morning, so I am happy to proceed.

‘I am well paid  here. The club have looked after me very well from the day I walked in as a player

‘I have a good contract and good backing. I will always feel that I owe people something, whether it is the people who employ me, the supporters, or the players I bring in.

‘It is just the way I am. I will always feel that I have a responsibility to someone.

‘I won’t ever feel that I have done it all and I don’t need to give anything back. I always want to give.

‘That is why the last few days have been difficult after what happened in Kazakhstan.

‘That was hard to take and I want nothing more than to succeed.’

He did admit, however, that Peter Lawwell had agreed to stop taking his dinner money off him on the way to training. Perhaps thats what he meant by legal stipulations.

Lennons not daft, so whatever they were, he feels they are more important than a rise.

In fairness, its kind of refreshing to see someone who isn’t in it for the money these days, but none of us would have had any problem with him getting a pay rise, or a new bonus. When he referred to  the ‘legal stipulations’ contained within his previous agreement, which is interesting. Perhaps he has secured himself a better pay off, maybe he has got someone from the club to sign it as well, or maybe its the bit about dinner money. Whatever, as long as he is happy, which he says he is.

He wants to concentrate on the football;

The priority for me is the football side of things,’ he insisted.

‘I have a huge challenge now — can I take this team into the Champions League without three of the more important players  from years gone by? That is a huge challenge in itself.’

Players from years gone by ? They only left last month. Bloody drama queen.

Celtic face Inverness today, and the Highland side have had a great start to the season. Three wins in three, versus Celtics two out of two. something has to give, and it should be a cracker.

Its 6am just now in Stoke, and I’m off to Glasgow as soon as I finish this. So, if I do the team news now, I can read it when i get to the Gallowgate.

Georgios Samaras has a toe injury, Kris commons has hurt his groin, Anthony Stokes has a calf problem and James forrest has sciatica. Derk Boerrigter has fitted in well at Celtic, as he remains on the sidelines, but its Forrest who is worrying Lennon the most. Which is no fucking surprise.

‘People are saying James has lost a yard, but he hasn’t,’ Lennon insisted. ‘It is because of his sciatica problem. He is dragging his right leg a little bit.

‘He will see a neurologist to find out if we can get to the bottom of it. It’s very frustrating for him and for us because he is a huge asset.’

Dragging his leg ? This lass just won a silver medal at the ski-ing, and she’s only got one leg, so i’ve no sympathy for him.

Actually, she doesn’t look like that anymore, but thats a better picture. Here she is in a pose that made her famous, in her former job collecting and storing fluid from old mens bodies.

Sorry, I digress…

So Lennon has a few selection problems up front, but at least it will give us a chance to do the A. Balde T. Watt forward line joke, and heres a picture

Which may have disappointed a few of you, but thats what popped up after a fairly risky google search.

Celtic could start with Forster, Matthews Lustig Mulgrew Izzaguerre  Brown , Ledley,  Kayal, Rogic Balde , Watt.

But probably won’t. I would play that back four, with Lustig shifted central, and get them ready for Wednesday, when theres a big game on, where Celtic cannot afford to concede.

Today, if Celtic click then a 5-0 win would be my prediction. Otherwise, and more likely, a disappointing 1-1 is on the cards.

The ground is just about 250 miles from my house, and if I keep talking like this I’l be going back to bed in a minute.

Elsewhere in Scotland, last seasons runners up Motherwell have struggled thus far, embarassing themselves at home and inEurope. Manager Stuart McCall, bizarrely also involved at international level with Scotland, says he needs more width.

Well, if he needs advice on that front, he could always ring his pal.

He knows all about width.

Elsewhere, you probably noticed that Bale is leaving -its all over the news- presumably just wanting to try something new to avoid going stale.

He’s being replaced by Ben Affleck.

The key, and Shirley Temple, who sung young , gave us mercurial midfielder Ki Seung Yeung yesterday , and today we drift deep, deep into the past, and ask who is this ?

Before I go, a wee bit of breaking news.

Jose Mourinho says he’ll walk if Chelsea don’t win trophies, and Stepehen Hawking says he’ll walk if Rangers do.

Mon the hoops, best result today will be no injuries and Balde n Watt getting on the scoresheet. Then, with our defence, maybe we’ll get a draw… 😉

Disagree with you there Ralph, I would stick to the two centre backs from last week Mouyokolo and Van Dijk. Their main problem was that they had never played together before and it will take them a few games to gel. Got to play them, it will never work if we keep chopping and changing. I think they have the makings of a good partnership and you can’t judge them on one game. Give them a chance.

Stop complaining about a wee trip to Celtic Park…….The Caithness Bhoys (and Ghirls) travel further than that everytime….not too mention the Orkney CSC…

Hail Hail, lets get into these Teuchters today… 🙂

“A young man named John Thompson”

I hope you are well “stoked” up for your journey North. It’s a long throw to the Gallowgate. By the way, was it the man from Delmonte, sorry Stoke, that coached the Shakhter thrower?

It is a relief to see many of our contracted actors are crocked which means we may witness some genuine performances today from people who actually want to play football. I just hope the thistle from the North doesn’t prove to be a jaggy nettle. We have had enough pains in our arses for one week.

I love the photo of the wife and I. Glad you got one where I don’t have the black eyes that I get every time she throws the leg over – sorry AT – me. Actually, I cannot find any photos showing me with black eyes. I find the one of my other missus in another port quite frustrating as I never get to see her. I am constantly in the bath to cool down. But the one of little Buddha is “magnifique”. I love the Lidl glasses, the Glesga highlights and the wee goatee, obligatory I believe, for anyone with Ibrox inclinations and ambitions. I wonder how HE performs on one leg. And your Google comment – well! It is an interesting search mind, as you say. God, there are some right hairy cats going about!!

Just on the topic of missing legs, our physio room must be like Lourdes Grotto with the amount of crutches hanging there. Is it not time someone asked what our medical team do given the queues outside are longer than in an A&E on a Saturday night. The time it takes to completely fix anyone is more like an attempt to get into the Guinness Book of Records for beating the waiting times in the NHS.

Anyway, Ralph, enjoy the game. I hope it is a cracker and we score more than they surely will. By the way, I hope you are not the guy I can hear constantly swearing on CTV? Keep it up and I will be reporting you to His Dishonour Pre-judge Weasel Nevin for potentially offending me, even though I am not there and may not have actually heard anything offensive but could have and maybees and some’dy sayd and anyway, if not I’ll just make it up ‘n the polis can pit the kettle on. Listen, you’re jist a sectarian bigot and it’s jail for you. The law is very clear on that for all Caffolics and Cel’ic fans. It’s their schools, you see, it’s their schools and that pope fella too ‘n maybees Peter Lawwell. Sally wants to know so’s he can put it all down on his bit a’ paper. Gee’s a wave frae the bus, Sally! Hope ye’ve got Sat Nav on. It’s easy tae get lost way oot there in the wilderness. Mind the wild bears. At least ye’re well protected wi’ a’ that blubber if ye find ye’re oot in the cauld. It’s an experience that broadens the mind. I can jist see ye wi’ a heid as big as ye’r belly. Whit a shite, sorry sight fir a distraught bear tae see ‘n naewhere tae hide. Och, ‘n them wi nae money tae hire a trouble shooter. What’s bettin’ they’ll soon no be in the “Black” for a second time.

Have a nice one everybody.

Just back from the game. Got to be pragmatic and take the draw even though we could have sneaked it at the end. Matthews and Rogic should stay in those positions for Wednesday.Got a feeling in the pit of my stomach that it will finish either 3 -1 or 4-2 against the Khazaks.

Oh and Pensionerbhoy , do you no have arthritis in your fingers my friend? By the time Ralph has read your post he will be at Carlisle – on the way back! Still enjoy your posts but I am a brevity man its an age thing.

Right enough San. After today there is no questioning the fight and effort of the players but apart from that there was no guile, craft or inspiration and of course the defence gave away the obligatory gifted goal (not the 1st-that was a great finish). I’m sure whatever representative of Shakhter was at the game would have been rubbing their hands in glee at what they saw.

There are some positives to be taken from today, the performances of Matthews and Rogic for a start and the brief appearance of young Atajic but ultimately a very frustrating day.

Wednesday is gonna be a hell of a jittery night but we can do it. If you don’t have belief we might as well give up now.

Agree with Frank. Rogic can play and Matthews goal was good. Just got to cool it on Wednesday. I feel the match to-day will be similar to midweek. Inverness are a competent bunch with all their players knowing what their job is and they are better than Shaktor. If we get through Wednesday intact then hopefully we can bring in players that are very much needed.

Mathews and Izzy were excellent today both players are much happier bombing forward it seems and relish hitting the by line.
Kayal was much more direct than Brown and Ledley and far less likely to pass sideways at every opportunity just unfortunate he is made of the same material as Forrest and McCourt ie Balsa Wood….did not even have time to get booked the poor wee soul?
Watt was defo the better of the two front men but for the love of god Lenny play him through the middle eh?
Balde a work in progress.
Ambrose played solid throughout but Mulgrew needs to be in the Central defence next week he’s not cutting it in the middle.

Comment of the day had to be from Tam Boyd on CTV reference Thompsons inability to see ICT wasting time or the wall being only 5 yards from a free kick..”He has Wullie Gollum Eyes….”
Classic Tam.
