Celtic Diary Thursday June 6

“We have a good coach and  a young team and if we stay together we shall be a good team. We need time to grow together and then we shall see. ”

Victor Wanyama, not talking about Celtic, but talking about his Kenya side who lost to Nigeria yesterday in the World Cup.

The big fellow earned rave reviews despite his side losing, as his display of  “brutal energy ” kept Chelseas John Obi Mikel subdued.

The report, on Capital sports, written by Mutwiri Mutuota claims that Wanyamas performance was a tale in itself, and it was only when he tired, that Nigeria got their 81st minute winner, which was set up by team mate Efe Ambrose.

The best compliment for the Kenyan Fenian came from Super Eagles boss, Keshi;

“He is one of them, excellent player. I wish i could have him for Nigeria. Can I have him ?”

What stands out though, is the opening comment. It seems Vic is keen on the idea of growing and learning and achieving something within the teams he plays for. He has mentioned this sort of thing in a Celtic context before , and makes one hopeful that he will still be in Glasgow when the transfer window is closed.

The Daily Record claims that Celtic will make a last ditch effort to sign Johnny Russell from Dundee Utd, which shows they are on the ball. Reporter Gordon Parks reckons that Neil Lennon is back in for the man he once tried to sign for £500,000. If the Record thinks we are in for him, then he has probably already booked his room on Derbys pre season tour.

Joe Royle, a manager in English football a while ago, thinks that Richard Dunne could become Celtics very own Paul McGrath if he joins the hoops. Again in the Record, and this statement had Glasgow publicans rubbing their hands with glee until it was pointed out that they weren’t referring to McGraths fondness for light refreshments.

Royle says that Dunne is a fantastic player, and if he was still in management he would take him. Right, thats maybe why he’s not in management. He continues;

“I haven’t seen Richard for a year, nobody has. ”

Right, thats maybe why he’s not in management. Wanting to sign  players who you haven’t seen for a year, because they are always injured and thirty three.

Reading are the latest team to be linked with Gary Hooper, but don’t worry, if he does go, the Emerald Isle retirement home, vacant since Robbie Keane went over the pond, may also have Kevin Doyle in residence, as Celtic are battling it out with Leeds for his signature.

( And anyway, Mrs Commons has promised to install industrial strength locks on her toilet and Hooper will be placed inside until the end of August. It worked the last time. )

Doyle, who helped Wolves out of the First Division into the Second last year is on £25,000 a week, and will have to take a salary cut to , say, £25,000 a year to come to Celtic, because anything else offered to the perennial failure would simply be chucking money into the fire.

These two get a mention because, quite worryingly, when Neil Lennon was thanking fans for their turnout to see him in Dublin on Tuesday, he mentioned specifically that he wanted to sign more Irishmen.

Lennon also took time out to acknowledge and appreciate the effort that Irish based fans put in to attend games;

“We know that our fans who travel to Celtic Park from Ireland make a huge sacrifice to come and support the club and we are most grateful for the way in such numbers , wekk in, week out.”

Its impossible to disagree with that. Along with those who travel north from England, despite ridiculous kick off times on days not meant for football, they deserve everyones respect.

So don’t sign Dunne or Doyle. Move swiftly on to the letter “E ” in your Big Book of Irish Footballers.

Or ” M ” . It seems like Aiden McGeady could be the first signing for new Everton boss Roberto Martinez. McGeady has had his wee break, filled his bank account, and learned to speak Russian with a Glasgow accent. Sending him to Liverpool and forcing him to learn another difficult language, complete with frenzied hand gestures, would be too much for him, and its time to bring him home.

And he’ll get his car nicked.

Conor Newton, the Newcastle player currently on loan at St. Mirren says he would love to join Celtic. Though to be fair, so would I. We can safely say that he should get out and about this summer break, and not waste it sitting by the phone.

Some time ago, there used to be another team in Glasgow, and with its replacement side currently working its way up though the leagues, there is little prospect of  facing them for a couple of years yet.

Still, if you like that sort of thing, and enjoy a laugh at the expense of those who follow follow the Ibrox club and its descendants, Celtic Women will play Rangers Women this weekend at Lennoxtown, so if you need your fix, thats the place to be.

The Rangers women team should be , er, something to behold.

yuk

We spoke to their captain yesterday , asking her for her thoughts on the game, but frankly couldn’t make out a word she said.

Speaking of that club, and its equally foul offspring.

Did you know Charles Green has left the club ? Aye, he went, “as agreed ” , at the end of last month. That kind of slipped under the radar. He was in the news again yesterday as he has transferred 700,000 shares to Laxey Partners, and Sevco fans having this read to them will be heartened to learn that they are not venture capitalists, like so many involved in the current carcass picking going on at Ibrox.

No, these are merely profit driven asset strippers.

That was Evan Williams in the picture yesterday, though whether he was in Valetta Harbour is open for debate.

You might find this one a little tougher.

fillippi

But only if you don’t look at the name.

Try this one instead

Dowie,John

He was signed by Jock Stein. Presumably in a rare off moment.

Don’t know the 1st picture, but is that 2nd one John ‘God Save The Queen’ Gorman who, in punishment for sins committed in a previous life, was number 2 to Glenn ‘it’s all handicapped people’s fault they are like that’ Hoddle?

I can see Dermot Dastardly sticking his head above the parapet and personally intervening and making sure Richard Dunne signs by letting him win at golf. It’s right up his street, a la the Keanes. I just hope he personally intervenes to ensure a new contract for Hoops and Vic as well as some new signings.

That was a good cheery one today. It has chased my “blues” away along with a certain Green. I have have been suffering some post traumatic holiday syndrome and needed a giggle. Thanks. It is just such a pity that the transfer fairytales are the only “news” at the moment. However, I did like Frank McGaaa..’s remarks about D.D. I am heartily sick of the attitude of some that Parkhead is a “boost up your pension” retirement home. As I said yesterday and reaffirmed in my reply to Brencelt, D.D. would be better focussing on investing in his fellow countrymen’s “passionate” support for his club. Do something to encourage them and help make their attendance at games more financially palatable. That obviously applies just as much to those living anywhere distant from the ground and who make major sacrifices to see the games and in the face of exploitative obstacles.

I am glad you have your priorities right when it comes to derby matches. It is good to see our ladies (no religious pun intended) playing The Rangers first eleven in a local game. The captain looks like she made up a large part of the infamous “iron curtain” of 1940s/50s Ibrox. Anyway, nice to see you concentrating on the grass roots even though the facial deformities may be the result of the weed in her hand rather than basic football. Mind you some of the football I remember them playing was more than basic and left many a fine player deformed.

The photo could be Frank Munro. Jock Stein signed him in his latter time at Celtic when some of his judgement seemed to be impaired. It was also the days when D. Whyte and the infamous Kelly clan kept a chastity belt lock on the coffers. He was not the worst to wear a Celtic jersey but his star will never be more than a flicker in the black hole of poor signings. He sadly died at not an old age in 2011. What puts me off is his lack of tonsorial tidiness in the photo. I certainly can’t remember a tash or curly locks nor does the badge etc. ring a bell as he played for Wolves. But then, he could have been weighing up his future as a golfer on the day.

Thanks for making me laugh again, Ralph.

Hey Diary,

I’m a wee bit doubtful about that picture you said was of Sandy ‘The Duke’ McMahon. His playing days were the late 1800’s – early 1900’s. That picture is from the 1950’s! Any idea who the lad in the picture really is? Sean Fallon?

Was yesterday’s mystery man John Dowie?

Ah, just seen bognor bhoyle’s posting – nice one. John Dowie it is. The ‘great’ Fulham player!
