Celtic Diary Friday February 28: Papering Over The Cracks

For a while now, as those who read this diary regularly or listen to the podcasts will know, we’ve been aware that although we couldn’t put our fingers on it, there has been a feeling that something isn’t right at Celtic.

We’ve mentioned the Lennon/Kennedy axis, the theory that Lennon is more of a PR man whilst Kennedy is the day to day de facto manager, which of course will save Lawwell a fortune when Lennon is moved on.

We’ve mentioned the fact, and it is a fact, that the players reckon the pitch at Celtic Park is the worst one they have played on this season.

We’ve mentioned the confusion at Lennoxtown as to exactly how the players should line up, and we’ve mentioed the concern that there is no consistency of who they should line up.

And, most importantly, we have haroed on about the fact that when it boils down to it, we have only one recognized central defender of any reasonable quality, and we failed to strengthen in that department during the summer.

Money was available, but it was spent on the development squad, which hints that developing and selling players is nore of a priority than actually developing a team capable of competing at the higher levels.

And bear in mind, if we are not competing at that level, then it will be much harder to attract real quality.

Last night, the support were easily turned onto the team which made the players nervous. The fortress that once was Celtic Park became a millstone for the players, and they were more afraid of doing wrong than trying tondonright

This, in turn led to basic errors.

A manager cannot compensate for such errors, and therefore cannot be blamed.

But it must have been plain to him that Simunovic was showing signs that an error was imminent, and when it came it was no surprise

Was Lennon watching the same game as the rest of us?

Again its a question that must be asked.

There are stories that the day to day running of the team is down to Kennedy and the coaching staff.

Could it be that Lennon only gets involved for the big games?

And when he does, he tinkers around with a winning system and dysfunctionalises it.

Ajer, poor soul, is bot a right back.

The keeper, Fraser Forster,  is clearly in some kind of comfort zone.

He’s neither as confident nor as commandong as he was early on in his second stint at the club, and this could be he prefers three centre halves in front of him, allowing him to stay on his line.

He doesn’t like crosses,  and leaves them to others.

Greg Taylor isn’t Keiran Tierney.

He’s Greg Taylor and unwarranted criticism will ruin him.

We’ve lost three crucial home games this season.

Cluj,  ” rangers ” and now Copenhagen.

We landed the Betfred Cup theough sheer luck.

Alright, there’s a massive cushion as the league enters the run in. That’s because the opposition couldn’t keep up the pace.

Unless we find our running shoes soon, that lead will be under seige.

St Johnstone away on Sjnday is now the biggest game of the season.

A defeat will see questions asked of the management and players mental strength.

I’m not sure they would have the answers.

Notice the polis have changed Santos, think it’s a misprint should be Simo.

The problem is everyone goes on about Res 12, the board do not give a proverbial. LIEWELL IS MORE INTERESTED IN DOWNSIZING AND HIS BONUS.

Last night was shocking and supporters should realise that this is the way forward. LENNY WAS BROUGHT IN AS A STOP GAP THEN LIEWELL SPOTTED AN OPPORTUNITY

Lenny is a placeman, everything he has done is at the bequest of the CEO. Remember about strengthening in the last window, nothing two prospects purchased for over 5Million. Scott Sinclair who is a stronger player than Elyianoussi ditched, at the behest of the CEO.

I feel sorry for Lenny he is Celtic through and through, as for JPK and Duff they are a joke. This year I have watched the team live and on the TV in general they have no shape, proven against Copenhagen and the Wankers.

Celtic have far better resources than those two teams but they are run by donkeys. Last night was the final straw and as long as we have the suits in charge they are dead in my eyes, it breaks my heart to say that.

its seems inconsistency is the most consistent thing.

Last night was the clusterfuck of clusterfucks.

A Team of Strangers totally devoid of a plan and by the looks of it peak fitness.

A management team who seemed to be watching a totally different performance than the rest of us.

A side without a recognised right back playing 4-5-1..which was a formation that had been ditched as a failure.

Yes they did, they studied and then at half time they made their move. Just like in the first leg. Just like last year in Strasbourg. Oh and just like that loss against “rangers”. We’ve been figured out and not making changes when they had and not noticing them targeting the left was poor.

Nae Broonie nae party. 4 words that explain an exposed shambles of a defence, a midfield that was overrun and an attack without a line of supply. Injured or past it or both? I expect when he’s back at 100% winning ways will be resumed but this is his encore and replacing him will take some doing.

Until the moment Jojo made his schoolboy error, we were not playing at our best but we were in no way looking in extreme danger of being beaten…we looked more likely to get a goal than them.
Cue the free gift goal and it was like a boot in the baws for our guys and a huge lift for Copenhagen. But we fought our way back and got and scored the penalty and it still looked that we could get the win. Another immediate defensive mistake and they score again, heads go down followed by another defensive shambles for their third goal.
Copenhagen couldn’t believe their luck, they were handed the win on a plate by our defense.
I’m gutted, sad, angry, disappointed etc etc…but I’m not turning on the manager or the team. The hysteria here and the fucking name calling of fellow posters is a disgrace.

Uncharacteristic errors by Simunovic,Ajer and Rogic?? Are you kidding? Those errors were totally in character for those 3. Simunovic isn’t good enough, Ajer is never a defender and Rogic has been way off all season. Rogic is class and will come good and Ajer may make it as a midfielder if he was ever to get a game there. We knew at the start of the season we needed central defenders yet didn’t act

We were all over the place tactically in the 2nd half, just as we were over in Denmark. Just as we have been in many games this season (Sevco, Cluj in the qualifiers).

The likes of which have not been seen prior or since? what about WGS getting us to the last 16 twice or Seville?

You (willfully) forget that Lenny failed to qualify for any European competition in his first two years. Luckily Sion got kicked out and we got through on default.

As for comparing him to Rodgers. Well, Rodgers’ CL group included Barca, Man City, PSG and Bayern, so understandable that we did not qualify.

Lennon failed to make it to the CL this year, which is comparable in toughness to the one that Rodgers was successful in 2 of the past 3 years.

That’s the only relevant comparator.

Unforseen errors? YOU PLAY 2 HOLDING MIDFIELDERS when the opposition start overloading the flank and adjacent half-space. You also tell your full-backs only ONE is allowed past the halfway line at once. This is how I know Kennedy isn’t pulling the tactical strings, he learnt this lesson against Strasbourg.

“Papering Over The Cracks” Sums it up for me.
Like an accountant playing DoF. I mean this has been going on for years, him bringing in players without the manager knowing of them. Buying cheap hoping that one might hit the golden jackpot, but most are just crackpot. Appointing a manager without due diligence and them a PLC. too, “shoulda known better”. I will always be grateful to Lenny filling in when Rodgers bolted, but we all know why he bolted, but appointments in the shower? where was the due diligence? also left in the shower. For me Odsonne could be the last big purchase, Rodgers wanted him and Moussa, we got them both and how the club profited, both on and of the park. The latest player purchases leave me in fear of how they will play, my confidence in the team is at a low ebb. After 50 years of watching the Tic’ The cracks are beginning to reappear. £45-50 million, in the bank is £40-45 million to much.

I posted this a few hours ago on another site. Hope you don’t mind, guys. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea,but heyho…
*
I missed the first half last night as I caught up on some zeds. Missed the opener too,up in time only for the last half hour. Looking back,we should have been about four up by half time.

But we weren’t.

First thing I did when I got up was to check the score, then the line-up on the BBC results page. Frankly,I was raging at both.

Now,I’ll say this without any attempt at scapegoating, merely stating my opinion.

We were without Christie and Ntcham. Lenny wanted the three at the back. Fraser will be in goal. He then has decisions to make. We saw what they were, and to be fair they seemed to be ok in that first half.

But Griff and Eddy have been giving defenders nightmares since they first started playing together, and have struck up a decent partnership as they pull defenders all over the place. Elyounoussi is a highly talented player, but who is still on his way back from injury. He also occupies the same space as Eddy when he cuts inside, and the same space as Taylor when he stays wide. So I’d have put Griff on from the start and told him to run till he dropped.

I’d then have replaced him with Frimpers and put Forrest-who was bloody anonymous,btw-on the left. Told him to cut across, not in,and either go for it,or feed Eddy as he ran into the gap vacated by that.

But our main problem was always going to be the centre of the park. No Olly, and a half fit Broonie. No Christie to drop back, with Tam never a ball winner in midfield. And all this against a team that we know can hit hard and fast on the break.

There was no balance in the team from the start. Our three backs are right footed, while of the others, only Broonie and Forrest prefer their right. That’s a problem we’ve had for far too long, and it remains unaddressed. Our two January signings look as far away from the first team as I do. I keep hearing about our large squad, but it’s top heavy in some areas and manifestly short in others.

An injury and a suspension look to have cost us last night. That’s a sign that our squad isn’t big enough where it needs to be. A sign,in fact, that our squad isn’t where it needs to be.

Neil Lennon,we are always told, has an eye for a player. Well,he needs to have an eye for a Neil Lennon. He is exactly what this team needs,a player cloned from his dandruff if need be. And a new Lambo would be nice too, instead of the beat up old Ladas on loan from FC Fuckknows. Protect the defence and allow the flair players to do their bit. That still leaves five of them, but knowing our luck they will all be left footed and running the same channels.

It seems we have some decent players in our development squad. We can wait for them. But if any of them fit the mould of a Lenny or Lambo,I’d be inclined to fast track them.

As MON told the board after the huns had beaten us 5-1,get me Neil Lennon and it will never happen again. Last night will happen again and again until Lenny gets his own Neil Lennon.

St Johnstone away in the Scottish Cup on Sunday at 3pm, live on Premier Sports.

I think its right after such a demoralising defeat to discuss it.

Just like there were elements of the defeat to the Huns of not learning lessons from the League Cup Final, this one mirrored some of the wretchedness of Cluj.

In a hopefully another Treble season its worrying that lessons don’t seem to be learned.

There’s probably several glaring issues how we lost last night, and lets face it, that game was harder to lose than to win, but somehow we managed it, the must niggling/fkg annoying thing for me was team selection and tactics, we’ve been playing a system for 6 weeks noo,a system with 2 quality forwards who have struck up a great understanding, a system that players have obviously taken to and enjoy playing in,yet Lennon decides to not only changes the attacking set up but also completely upsets a back 3 that actually gave us some stability, that’s 3 massive losses at Parkhead so far this season, Cluj, sevco, Copenhagen, yet Lennon still tinkering with systems and personel when hed actually found the answer…KTF

Lenny HAS to take responsibility, but not ALL the responsibility. The team were dire to a man. From the moment I saw Elyonnoussi and no Leigh Griffiths starting I was thinking oh FFS, we’re not going to blow it again are we? We were looking like getting a decent 3-5-2 and changing it in my view created the end result last night. We made mistake after mistake all over the park and yet could still have had about 3 goals, but there was no confidence on the ball from the start IMHO. Simunovic’s mistake was unbelievable but then Jullien could have retrieved it but slipped and big FF left the gap between his legs like a hooker for the ball to get through. A fucking disaster IMO but this season’s ALL about the NINE. BTW, I think the whole fucking squad and management and Lawwell should be taken to a Junior game on a really shitty evening and charged about 15% of their weekly income (like many of our supporters) whilst forced to watch the entire match. The proceeds to the homeless and I’ll bet they’ll see some PROPER fitba played with passion and plenty of skill and then they should be made to write an essay on just how TF they ‘earn’ so much more dough than the Juniors who will be apprentices and tradesmen for their income. Rant over, but deary fuckin’ me, it’s not acceptable from Celtic FC.

Here we go again. And this site is particularly bad for it. We lose one game and everything is wrong, the team, the manager, the recruitment. Oh and we were lucky to win the Betfred, so what? I’ll take it. Cluj? Cluj are a decent team, they proved it again last night, Sevilla couldn’t beat them over 2 legs. Copenhagen? No one has beaten them by more than 1 goal in Europe this season so anyone thinking that we were going to skoosh it was sadly mistaken. We are currently 12 points ahead in the league, oh but what if we lose ground? Yeah we probably will, it’s unlikely we will win every game. Can you see the other mob winning every game?
Truth be told we are playing some great football in the league, our defence is more than capable for the run in. We are Celtic when have we ever had a great defence, they aren’t called the Sieve for nothing. I am quite happy with what we have.
Fans complaining we didn’t go 3-5-2 are likely the same ones bemoaning it when Lenny changed it after the break.
Do us a favour and gies feckin peace!!!

It was sore one, shock to the system.Never saw that coming.I think I have, like many Tims these days, got arrogant. A bad night at the office, for many reasons. Let’s take a deep breath and: win the league and win the Scottish Cup and show the Orcs who are Champs by taking both games against them. Lenny is doing fine and most of the bhoys, most of the time are also playing like Champions. Copenhagen proved a good team although we should have taken them, both home and away. At St. Johnstone:
3-4-1-2
Forster
Forrest/Brown/McGregor/Taylor
Christie
Edouard/Griffiths
I would also like to see Soro in action, with some time given to Klimala as well. 2-0 to the bhoys, normal service resumed. We can now concentrate totally on the domestic front. In Europe, the Orcs have had some great results. The Braga result was superb. Credit to Slippy and his gang. They did what we should have done.

There is a clear confusion at Parkhead, Lenny is Celtic through and through you could see his upset at the game end interview, but he is not the issue or JPK or Duff they are placemen. At times the team is disjointed, look at the defeat and almost Loss in the League Cup Final to the Wankers, Copenhagen are not a great team but stupidity. Poor defenders and shocking tactics lead to CFC downfalo

The issue is Liewell with his constant downsizing, when Brenda left Lenny was his lucky break, but should have been a stopgap. As seen in the last transfer window where Lenny wanted to strengthen we ended up with projects over 5 million squidoos for the two players that have not played
Scott Sinclair is a better player than Elyianoussi, but it was a downsize by Liewell yet again. We have been here before when Delilah was brought in and the Wankers beat us in the semis leading to DD bringing Brenda.
Currently Celtic are a ream that flatters to deceive, Broony is at the end, Simo is a farce, Ayer is more midfielder than defender, but we have had a makeshift defence for a couple of years, Liewell and Wankier are more interested in their bonus than the future of CFC.
Say what you want about the denizens but are CFC in a better place with all their moniies?

Liewell, the board and DD are small minded people who appear to have carried on the biscuit tin legacy of the Kelly’s and Whites

“Papering over the cracks”. It seems like we have been saying that for years now. Project players brought in, usually from the middle east. For every one a success, there’s been five dumplings. Players brought in without the managers knowledge, a conveyor belt of mince. An accountant that continually interferes in the football department, a manager appointed in the showers without due diligence, £45 million in the bank- £40.million too much. “You get what you pay for”, freebies, oldies, players learning their trade. Two strikers bought in recently, one for nought, one for 9 mill. euro’s. Who was it brought them in, B.R. and the result was immediate and the biscuit tin called one away and is calling out to the other.
“When will we see there like’s again.”

Reply to  Mike

2 strikers brought in recently are Klimala (£3m?) and Bayo (£2m) but seen little of them and nothing impressive.

We didn’t pursue the 1st team ready Andraž Šporar (£5m?) so looks like another false economy by the bean counters.

We are likely to be without Eddy for the CL Qualifiers as he may be at the Olympics, so who will lead the line?

The abject performance against RossCo shows Griff can no longer lead the line on his own, so who is going to partner him?

Is either of the undynamic duo going to step up to the plate before the end of the season or will it be another panic buy or an unnatural cobbled together effort?

I agree with most of what you wrote but I also feel there are some favourites who no matter how they play get a game every week. They are all good players at Celtic but some players are tired, off form etc. and should be rested. Also the subs in game we are winning easily are strange and it does not allow players to get game time. Even last night when Rogic was towing a caravan and Var was being looked at it was the time to change and probably replace JF as well. We scored Rogic is out on his feet and gives them the ball they score. End of game. The emergence of Christie last season, Ntcham playing well most of the time, Fringpong has been a revelation and Griff annoying all opposition especially Seconians has breathed life into the team. 4 were missing and we are lightweight, don’t have enough strength, ball winning ability passing ability and pressureising teams. These four should be given a run of games together. Eddy is a different player when they play. He was isolated last night and up against 3 cenre halfs with no support. Ellanoussie was playing well but what was his prep before starting in Europe. Remember he was brought back dir cup final and then disappeared with injury for 3 months. Was Broonie injured last night or is it just time catching up?

I’ve had a terrible day. Feel like killing someone, then I feel bad for the fans. Old women in tears In the stands probably spent hundreds of pounds watching the team. I was going to say “ Ronny out” but he’s gone. His legacy seems to be lingering. Ralph the underlying feeling of something not being right is pretty much on the surface. Scrooge mentality. It’s always been there at Celtic. The days of schoolboys from scottish schools who kept the club going because they played football all day and were good, are long gone. You can make the place look pretty with lights and hotels losing sight that it’s a football club, the fans want football not a psychedelic light show

Over it now on to nine in a row. I suppose we would take this position however much it hurts. We seem to be a team perpetually 3 players short of the real thing. Since O Neil

Rogic was a risk last night he played ok but he’s at pre season level not primed for a high intensity match of high importance. Few million lost there. Suppose we would’ve bought some Latvian kid with big wraps with the money anyway

You certainly dominated the narrative of Wednesday when you came on here crowing after the Huns victory.

After the Huns victory in 2018 you awarded them top spot in the league despite the fact we were top with a game in hand.

You then completely lost your shit about it for the next 2 months despite the fact we built up an unassailable lead.

You hated the Treble Treble years and pour your bile out week after here.

As far as I can see most other posters are reasonable ie they will praise when required and criticise when necessary.

You should try it, its good for the soul and avoids stunted thinking.

We have the players to beat Copenhagen Cluj Sevco.
Sadly our manager is getting it badly wrong it needs sorting.
Poor decision making by the players yes but a team who had settled into a good rhythm with a system that suited was booted into touch by our manager on another big night.
We need to bounce back and get ready to win the treble.

I’m not a usual suspect. Normally I like his tactical decisions, but he waited too long, Simo and Taylor were being targeted and there was always going to be a goal from that side unless something was done. The error was forced.

Ah yes we have lost of first game of the year against better opposition than we face in Scotland and we could and should have won the game. No need to panic no need to turn on each other and no need to swing into oh woe are we. Onto St Johnstone and another cup tie win. Treble is on let’s get the treble

So we’re poised for our fourth domestic Treble and our 9th consecutive Title, but you choose to write this? I was disappointed about last night, but I’m over it because we’re on course for arguably one of our best ever seasons since Lisbon. Seville doesn’t count because the domestic cupboard was bare. It would serve this writer well to remember the 90s and how it was before Stein.

I take you point. However I do think its time to enter a transitional period. when your centre half has to miss every second game, coz his knees poorly and spends most of the first half on his @rse against pretty mediocre euro opposition Questions have to be asked. Brown was clearly injured and was played because we have no one else. Also we were bossed in midfield once again and rogic has clearly had his day. not good enough. 1/10 must try harder. Also Taylor the no1 pick at LB FFS.

I like Simo his tackle on Kenny Miller is forever ingrained in my brain, but it’s high time we got ourselves Scott McKenna and told Simo he can find another club. While we’re at it, it’s about time we got ourselves Lawrence Shankland, if he plays in in the SPFL for anyone other than Celtic we will regret it.

I will continue to say this. Until he changes his signing policy or leaves, the biggest problem or threat at Celtic is Peter Lawwell. Anybody who has any inkling about the game can see first team quality players such as Forster, Edouard, Julien and Elyonoussi have evidenced that they can turn up in big games.( Now before you say “Lawwell signed them” remember two are on loan and please read on ) Other than that it is the Scottish players such as Forrest, McGregor and Brown who are consistent.
We keep signing projects. We all know that we need at least one more CH and Browns replacement. In the summer we will need Edouards. It may be Klimala or Bayo (almost £6m) for the two of then I can’t see it. I hope I am wrong. When Ajer came back from Kilmarnock he was hard working and raw. During the summer he had ridiculous price tags attached to him and this season he has struggled. He has been at fault for goals v Lazio, Cluj x 2 and Copenhagen. What is more disappointing was the winner Sevco got in December. That was Ajer again losing his man and he did it also at the proceeding corner. I also recognise that he is a young midfielder playing as a makeshift CH. This season it shows. Simunovic made a mistake last night. Everyone does, but for a CH to be as unavailable as he usually is raises questions again about Laweells signing policy. He cost £4m; plus Kouassi; £3m. I am not sure he is the negotiator he thinks he is.

Still ficking sick, its going to take a long, long time to get over that p!sh. Because its the hope that eats into your soul and then gets kicked in the baws. Lazio was an inspirational game that got you thinking that we had progressed significantly and the Huns had regressed, now its the polar opposite, now its them with the hope and we are going to Perth looking for inspiration, Perth FFS. European football is the lifeblood for our club, the magic money tree, fail and we cannot (cough) invest. To progress one man has to go, if he doesn’t then the p!sh will continue ad nauseam.

Scott Brown cost our club £4.4 mill. TEN years ago, TEN years ago. Celtic got a huge return on their investment. His so called replacement was signed months ago, he cost Celtic “1.5 mill. from Peters favourite agent. The lack of investment into the playing squad is telling, but with around £40.00 mill. in the bank its inexcusable. The club is being run on a shoestring when there is absolutely no need for it, none. Being put out of Europe once again by a team with half our budget means that the support is being short changed.

Peters peperoni, second class players will never win nowt and he’s bought most of them, some even without the manager knowing about them. Peter’s policy of buying cheap players is a failed policy, buying them with so much money in the bank is an abject failure.

Aye the auld fella’s showing his age, aren’t we all? But what a player, what a leader, what a Tim.
And what a captain he has been a real hero and servant to our great club, ten of him and we would win every game. The battle of football games is won in the midfield and he has won 99% of them, when he retires it will be a very sad day for our team. He has driven the team for ten years, ten years of mostly glory, there’s never been his equal in Scottish football.

Its baffling how they can dig it out in Europe but are woeful in Scotland.

Funny as feck thought! 🙂
