Celtic Diary Friday August 10: Public Spat Does Media A Favour

A gleeful media pounced on a perceived row between Brendan Rodgers and Peter Lawwell when the BBCs Chris MacLaughlin said there had been one.

Or something like that.

The BBC man, who is is not noted for accuracy , hence his job at the BBC, claimed that there had been a bit of a rumpus behind the scenes at Celtic.

Apaprently, the failure to sign John McGinn, and a similar earlier scenario involving Christian Piccini has annoyed the manager, as in both cases the deal should have been done quickly, before other clubs got involved and eventually turned both players heads away from Glasgow.

In both cases, the player had wanted to come to Celtic, but lethargy was the winner, and you can read into that how you want.

The media certainly did.

The intrepid McLaughlin then asked Rodgers if the boards ambition matched his own.

“I wouldn’t answer that – that’s something that’s private.”-a line that he has said a few times before. Only now its been highlighted as a reason for his imminent departure, which would suit everyone in the media, and certainly the BBC.

Lets be honest, it doesn’t, and if Rodgers wasn’t aware of that, he should maybe have asked before he signed up.

He knows the budgets, and he knows the limitations, and he’s still here.

What has pissed him off is that the players concerned were well within those constraints, and his wishes were not carried out. that needs addressing, and it will no doubt be addressed.

One cock up is a mistake, two is downright incompetence.

With Celtic having made a few quid in the transfer market, any club with any sense will try to hijack a deal if it can. Thats how things work in business.

Its why the club keeps its transfer targets under wraps, and why we have been surprised a few times in the past.

But this little spat has led to the hounds-well, lapdogs-being unleashed..

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers reiterates warning to board to match his ambitions

( Evening Times )

‘Terminado’: Brendan Rodgers says that if Celtic get comfortable, he will be finished as manager

( Herald )

‘Terminado’ Brendan Rodgers wants his Celtic ambition matched or he’ll quit

( Record )

Yes ! He’s going ! Stick your Ten In a Row Up your Arse

(SFA Weekly News -courtesy of WATP Publishing )

So what did he actually say ?

You won’t see this in the media, by the way… ( thanks to Celtic Nation, on twitter )..

It’s a joy to work here. I love my life here and enjoy being the manager here.

“Dermott (Desmond ), Peter (Lawwell) and Ian (Bankier) all want what is best for Celtic. Critically, they are major shareholders and run the club. I have to respect that, and I do.

“My ambition is for Celtic. Every manger is ambitious but for me it’s inherently about the club. We’ve done a double Treble, been invincible in one of those seasons, set a British record for unbeaten games.

“Especially after our first season, we built on it last year. We want to keep building it. “I totally respect how difficult it can be, the financial side is tough at times.

“I have a huge respect for the board here – absolutely. They have run the club strategically very, very well. “Me coming into here and what I have seen in the past couple of years, I have real good relations with every one of them.

“There is not an issue there at all. My focus is on doing the best for Celtic.

“Deep down I am a supporter but I am also a professional manager. I also look for the help that is needed to take the team to the next level if that is what the demand is. I will always push for that.”

That kind of covers the waterfront.

Too much is being made of the bits you will see in the paper..

Warning shots, maybe, shots that perhaps should have been kept in house, certainly.

The English transfer window is now closed. During that window , there was at least one significant offer for Dedryck Boyata, who is entering the last year of his contract. He is still at the club.

There was a significant offer for Keiran Tierney, which certainly turned the players head, before Brendan turned it back again. Remember his words earlier this week, about keeping Tom and Keiran. Had there been no offer for Tierney, he wouldn’t have had to try to keep him. He’s still at the club.

Rodgers has tremendous sway over the playing side, he’s just pissed off with one or two around him. One or two who have maybe slipped off message..

However, here is some food for thought…

What if Congerton/BR’s list of players are not good and/or too expensive.

And Peter Lawwell has his own son in his ear, could be giving his old man better advice.

He does have access to a better scouting range than Congerton/BR.

He’s head of scouting and recruitment for Man City.

If that doesn’t tread on Congerton toes I don’t know what does.

And Congerton hasn’t exactly made himself indispensable…he perhaps needs to rethink how he entices top players to Celtic…..

More food for thought…the English window is shut, and guess who might not be injured any more ?

Image result for moussa dembele celtic

Rodgers said;

We will see how it goes. The medical guys have always felt it was going to be a push. We also have to see how Moussa is feeling himself. You can’t put a timeline on these sort of things.

He is working very hard out on the training field. We will see how he goes. You always have to weigh up the risk. They are going to be close.

Don’t get me wrong, if he plays in Athens, we will be a far better side than without him, and I’m delighted he’s still here. but I’m starting to get the feeling he’s going to run his contract down to the last day, and there’s little we can do about it…

Thats how we got him, remember…

Tomorrow Celtic visit Edinburgh to face table topping Hearts.

Craig Levein says the grass will be fine…though one wonders if Lee Wallace fancies a return to Tynecastle.

After Celtic complained about the length of the grass last time round, the Hearts manager has made sure we’ll have something to moan about tomorrow afternoon.

Image result for football pitch long grass

Celtic are expected to rest a few players, or at the very least use them sparingly.

Kouassi in for Brown would be the main change for me, but I’m not the manager.

Its probably too early for our next signing, who is still running about his room dancing for joy…

“I never imagined this would happen and I thank God the doors to the club have opened up for me again. If I was going to return to a club in Europe, then to go back to a club I love very much is just incredible for me.”

Welcome home…we’ve missed that little bit of steel he adds to the back line.

And he doesnt take any shit from opponents, something a few of the current lot should look up to.

Brendan is in charge, fully in charge, and will remain so for a while yet ( thats it, he’s gone on monday -Ed, Etims Readers, Peter Lawwell )

But I might send in my CV , just in case.

I might also have a go at this…

Son of ex-Rangers boss Ally McCoist told he faces jail after hitting pedestrian

( The Times )

The son of Ally McCoist has been warned he faces a jail sentence after leaving a pedestrian with a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain when he knocked him down with his sports car.

Argyll McCoist, 20, whose father is the former Rangers manager, was uninsured when he ran a red light and struck Stephan Murdoch, 21, on a pedestrian crossing, a court was told.

Mr Murdoch was treated for a cracked skull, internal bleeding and a broken leg after the collision in the Renfrewshire village of Bishopton in December 2016.

McCoist, of Houston in Renfrewshire, appeared at Paisley sheriff court to face five charges. He admitted driving without insurance and causing serious injury to Mr Murdoch by driving dangerously.

His not guilty pleas were accepted to charges of failing to stop at the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident to police and failing to tell a police officer who had been driving his car.

McCoist wept as Pamela Brady, the procurator fiscal depute, described the incident, which took place at about 9.30pm, to the court.

“Witnesses observed the car, driven by the accused, approaching the lights and witnesses describe the car as travelling at excessive speed,” she said. “The car seemed to swerve to the right before striking the complainer. The car then drove away and the accused did not stop at the scene.”

The vehicle was identified through debris left at the scene and it emerged that the defendant had been driving.

She said that Mr Murdoch, who now works in a call centre because it allows him to sit down, still suffered short and long-term memory problems because of his head and brain injuries. John Scullion, in mitigation, said: “The accused failed to notice the light had changed. When he saw him [Mr Murdoch] he swerved but he was too late to avoid striking him and he panicked and drove off from the scene. He expresses remorse and it appears both genuine and profound.”

He said McCoist was 18 at the time of the collision and that his insurance had lapsed the day before.

As he called for background reports before sentencing, Sheriff Colin Pettigrew warned McCoist that he could be jailed, saying: “This is a serious matter. All options will be open to me.”

He banned the footballer’s son — who has a twin brother called Mitchell — from driving and told him to return to court next month to be sentenced. McCoist’s father was not at the court in Paisley.

Iv’e heard of them coming up from London, Stoke, the midlands, from every corner of Scotland, but the one thing that they share is a love of Celtic, some who go to the games, should stay at home and gie us peace. If its not possible for one reason or another to go to the games, does that make them not a Celtic supporter, of course not, so please gie us piece.

I agree with what yer saying Mike. My uncle who recently passed attended CP for years, bought a multitude of grandkids all the tops and merchandise, bought bricks etc a serious outlay of capital at times, then, due to his health being poorly he couldn’t attend any matches but was still the same passionate man who’s last words to me as he lay dying with his Celtic top on were ” don’t worry about me son I’ll be upstairs with Jinky, Tommy Burns and all the other greats.” He also took me to my first game against Airdrie in 75, I was 4 and for that I’ll always be thankful. My point is even if you can’t get to the matches for whatever reason, that fire that burns deep within is what makes us what we are as supporters. HH

On guard, who was behind the Daniel Arrzani and Emilio signing?
Touche’ We have lost two valuable players who need to be replaced with similar or better quality.
On Guard’ We are skinto.
Touche’ Don’t talk pish.
On Guard’ Ok. get on the phone to the BBC and ask for Chris.
Touche’ Get thee behind me satan and bring in the players I want.
On Guard’ No!
Who needs anyone to decry us, because we only need one another to fight with. We are approaching the next C.L. qualifier, it is hugely important to the club and there should be no distractions, none. We pay the manager big bucks to deliver success, back him or fuck off.

Although Izzy wasn’t Brendan’s 1st choice I believe he was sold without his consent, as he considered him a more than adequate backup for Tierney.

The money was too good to turn down despite the coffers continually bursting at the seams.

I agree on Boy/Jozo and if we “lose” £9m+ on the former then the mistake was not having an adequate replacement for him signed up a year or 6 month ago.

Again, that isn’t a Brendan failure.

Roll on Saturday and a good arse kicking for the Edinburgh ‘Rangers’ Surely there is mileage in EPL players at 32ish with no medals and no European experience. There must be tonnes of them polishing their Bentley and then rearranging the youth honours in the trophy cabinet. OK the cathedral of football stuff stretches so far but a CL night at Paradise or Hampden in the sun compared to being a Fulham player FFS. In regards to the Scottish media I won’t read their publications, click on their sites or use any of their other platforms for source material and I suggest any Celtic supporter should do the exact same. Let’s not engage with them in that capacity. They claim that they’re impartial when it comes to reporting and their is no bias, but it’s simply not true. Look at the “esteemed” Keef Radar Jackson of the Daily Record and most of his colleagues at the Sunday Mail, Park, Gannon, Waddell, then we have BFDJ and his love child Chris Jack at the Evening Times, nothing more than Hun cheerleaders. Matt Lindsay at the Herald, another one, and the various pundits on the radio and podcasts. Let’s ignore them and leave them to enjoy the Gerrard/Sevco wankfest. None of the above and the rests opinions matter as we know what to expect. They’ll do or say anything to attack us and at the same time praise the Establishment dead club, that’s what they do.

Let’s get behind the team, the manager and the club and do what we do best. Ignore those who seek to cause division among us as they’re full of the oul brown stuff.

Brendan wants out . Something has annoyed him . It can’t be the Board with their tight fisted hold on finances . That has been the Celtic way especially since wee Fergus made us great again. Something else must be annoying Brendan .
I think it is fan abuse dished out to some of Brendan’s players , on Twitter, forums & the stands . Brendan spends week building all his first team players confidence & the loud mouths destroy them .
But like Board’s misery , player abuse has been around , so the only reason left is Brendan wants out , & he prefers to blame the Board . B R is too nice a man to say he has enough of Celtic , so he has to find fall guy . Continuously moaning to Scottish media will result in one thing , Brendan out , as DD will choose to keep PL everyday of the week

There’s a narrative being peddled by the usual suspects within the Scottish media that we’re in some sort of crisis but there hasn’t been one fact to validate the nonsense being poured out by the stenographers. Look at what we’re contending with those who are supposed to be impartial

Waddell
Jack
Lindsay
Jabba
BFDJ
Park
Walker
Provan
Gannon
Jackson

not forgetting the various others from the radio, podcasts and other media platforms. Can we honestly take anything that they claim as truths when you consider some of the rubbish that has been peddled by their newspapers etc? The continuation myth and various other lies that they have propagated and claim to be true tells us all we need to know about them.

We’re better off just ignoring them and leave them in their Sevco/Gerrard fantasy wankfest and back the team, manager and the club. I’m not a conspiracy nut but we need to see these fakes for what they are. Don’t buy their publications, hit their click bait articles or any other platform they utilise to talk or spread nonsense about the club.

I’m with Mike and Una a divided house suits Sevco, elements on the media and Dave King, the only thing Celtic need fear is divisions within becoming daily media fodder because then they will get bigger. We shouldn’t fall into that trap on the basis of a home draw in the Champions League with the tie still alive and failure to sign a good player but not one who would be first pick yet, plenty of time for John McGinn. We need to focus on Hearts who are top of the table, yeah right.

It’s possible to not believe the media but also be critical of the board’s inaction and inability to land key targets.

We shouldn’t just forget it all in the dubious so called cause of unity because if we do we’re guaranteed to repeat it again.

It wasn’t the media that came up with the pish about a bid for Tierney (denied by both Celtic and Everton) and McGinn signing today, tomorrow, next week (repeated for weeks/months), will sign for nothing in January etc.

The truth is out there or rather in there between the MSM and the laughably called In The Know Celts.

Cha, when it comes to a critique for the right reasons we should always make sure we hit the target. I suspect that there are those within the club who have “journalists” that they feed stuff to and when they need a return the journo will gladly do that for them but I find it increasingly hard to believe what they say without facts to sustantiate the claims they make. As I said in my earlier post, one of the biggest frauds in football history has continually turned to dust due to the lies from the media here in Scotland. Looking ahead to the next couple of games, I wonder if we’ll rest any players tomorrow.

People have remarked how sluggish/injured Broony looks but if he’s out who do we bring in, Kouassi hasn’t played all season so can he possibly be chosen?

If there’s any thoughts of playing Dedryck next Tuesday then he needs to play tomorrow as he hasn’t played for 6 weeks and needs a run out before then.

Conversely, even if fit, I’d leave Mousa out and have him on the bench on Tuesday, ready for an emergency but hopefully not needed.

I do not get why we do not play Kouassi Eboue, the times that I have watched him play, he seemed to be a good player, a strong player, he has got talent. We were told by the Celtic press that he cost a transfer fee of around £2.7 mill. GBP. Why pay that to sit on the bench season after season, it does not make sense. We were told that he was Broony’s possible replacement, of course he Broony wants to play all the time. Somebody needs to padlock Broony’s boots away in the locker room and give Kouassi a chance to play.
All we are saying is give Kouassi a chance,

I didn’t have the jam tarts game in mind Cha, I meant he must deserve some game time surely. Broony retired from International’s, but we could bed him in gradually to give him a chance to come up to speed. Of course if a player does not play there is less chance of criticism and his appeal grows, but he has been very, very patient, time for some game time, if not then a loan spell might be best for him, he deserves that at least.

The issue of whether there is a rift between the manager and PL is now got to the stage where it is at the “he said, No, he said” level. Time to drop it.

There is no doubt in my mind that, as it stands, this transfer window has not moved us forward as a team. Who to blame? I do not know.

What is clear is that the season ticket money is in, and the CelticTV money from those of us abroad is also in. We are committed for this season.

At the end of the season, it will be the time to reflect on what has happened here and vote with our feet, or not.

Time to spread some disappointment to the Hearts. The future starts there.

Starting t to feel more positive as the week goes on. Like the pionts made about cover, we have 4 centre halves, I know we have reservations about all of f them but at least BR can mix and match through form loss and injury, now we have 3 strikers, 2 keepers, plenty of talent wide and in midfield. The two players who were not covered last season were KT and Broonie so let’s give Kouassi a chance if we drop some league points Sept: Oct so what? Keep Broonie for Eurooesn games and those against the top 4 or 5, similarly with KT, now that Emilio is back, a plan is emerging .

Why shouldn’t young players get their chance, someone coming back get a decent run to regain fitness and the outcome the best players are in top condition to achieve better prigress( I love that word).
Liked one of our guys shouting at the AEK player who was red carded “ Take your time son the SFA will have resinded it before you reach the dugout.”

Ajer’s suspended next week so definitely not KAJH for that one.

Dedryck hasn’t played since end of June and he does take time to get up to speed eg Ibrox last, so will he be pitched in?

I assume Jozo (preferably the non-bozo variety) will be back but with who, simply Hendry or something more creative (gulp)?

Charlie Saiz, probably agree with most of that but we have 3 right back options, I really like Lustig, he has great passion for the club but either has or soon will decline, I don’t know what Gamboa did wrong either and of course we had hopes for Anthony Ralston, who I gather seems to have blotted his copy book for some reason. The next 4 days will say a lot about us and how our season will go, mind you you could say that about any 4 days for Celtic! I am not greedy just a good win against the grass collector, a superb winning performance in Greece, Paddy back and two other signings from down south, now that is a modest little package eh!

Results and points gained, goals scored last season showed it was Celtic lite. Of course we need to rotate at times but the players coming in are not as good as first choice ( or they would be first choice) I sympathize with these players being pitched in but they have to show they can do it and a one off game isn’t the best showcase. I recall the 2-2 home game with Hibs last season either before of after a European game. Kouassi was in for Brown and played relatively well but McGinn and others were better on the day and began to boss the game. I don’t believe that would have happened with Brown playing .( Celts denied a penalty when Efe fouled Sinclair). I am not saying don’t play them after advocating Christie’s return for long enough but there’s the dilemma…how can we see how good they can be in one off games…and take a possible bad result without hyper ventilating whilst going for domestic trebles ? I’d take Celtic’s 26 man squad against anybody in Scotland and many in Europe but something is missing…a concerted style of play…a pragmatism…an ability to close a game out. The Lions didn’t worry about this because they beat teams playing football…’pure beautiful inventive football’

I see Stephen Gerrard has ” praised his chairman ” for his transfer dealings.
Of course like all true scousers he won’t question where the merchandise came from, as long as he has it in his possession.

Ralph, the word ‘ Forbidden ‘ has appeared in place of the slightly more irritating ‘ 508 nonsense ‘
I thought forbidden was the word used by my good lady in bed last night…at least i think it was forbidden, the gaffa tape made it sound like mofbiffen…

Naw it isnae 🙂
