Celtic Diary Wednesday August 8: Divide And Conquer

Whilst everyone else was flinging themselves out of high buildings onto spiky railings yesterday as John McGinn decided he would do the honourable thing and at least talk to Aston Villa, Brendan Rodgers, in an interview with one of the papers, appeared to decide that Lawwell was a knob, the board were a bunch of tossers and Dermot Desmond was a bloody liar .

Read it closely.

I did.

The only thing of any note from the full interview for me was this bit..

BR: “My role in the summer was clear; to keep the players that were here such as Kieran [Tierney] and Tom Rogic which is great. And at the very minimum replace the players that we lost and where we might need improving.

So we done the first part with Kieran and Tom.

Tom Rogic had to sign a new deal, and so he was kind of a priority, but Tierney is on a long term contract, and therefore any bids could easily be rebuffed.

If you recall the Tierney accepts Everton contract story which we ran with, part of it was that Rodgers and Lawwell were trying to persuade him to stay, and it now looks as though they have, or at least Brendan has.

Otherwise, why mention him by name ? After all, publicly, he has claimed there was no bid from Everton…

Of course, he cannot publicly say that Tierney was away but he had  talked him out of it, and this is only speculation, but given the amount of people who told me about the offer, both north and south of the border-and one from the Isle of Man- there may well have been something in the story after all.

But as far as I’m concerned , he appears to be staying , the manager has done his job, and should now be allowed to get on with doing his job.

And if Tierney is staying… that allows me to do my impression of velvet toned singer Dean Martin…

In fact, its given me an idea for when I’m in Belfast at the weekend…

Image result for drunk gif

As for McGinn, if Hibernian have accepted a lower bid from Aston villa than what they were asking for from Celtic, then simply match the bid, or increase it a wee bit.

Then there is no excuse for Hibernian to reject it.

And we’ll all see who the villain is in what has become a pantomime resembling the long running production from Ibrox.

Although the latest is that McGinn will go to England, at least according to some new information I’ve seen this morning.

Emilio Izaguirre is set for a “shock ” return, with a short term contract as defensive cover, and apart from that lets try to remember that there are three weeks of the window left in which to strengthen.

Patrick Roberts may well end up in a hooped shirt again, though as we said when he left, he never really took it off.

But seriously, would you have felt comfortable with a new defender slotting straight into the team for games of this magnitude ?

Image result for no way

But, as ever, when a negative Celtic story appears in the media, and this one seems to deliberately want to unsettle and divide the support, a simple glance at the fixture list will explain everything..

Image result for celtic v aek

Perhaps, and it may be a little paranoid of me to suggest this, the media are at it again…

However, perhaps Rodgers’s decision to allow such an interview as the one referred to above to go out ahead of this game was in fact the manager throwing up a smokescreen to allow him, and especially the players,  to fully focus on the task ahead, which is not unlikely, given that he can be a shrewd operator.

He’s got almost everyone available for this game, and has a difficult decision or two to make when he selects the team.

Has Gamboa done enough to merit a start ?

MacGregor or Rogic ?

Has Scott Sinclair shown enough that he is back to being a threat on the opposite flank to James Forrest ?

Does he start with the two available strikers, or let one tire the defence before replacing him with the other ?

Reports indicate that the Athenian defence is a little slow, and does this mean he starts with two to try to put the game beyond our opponents reach early doors ?

Lustig and Boyata ? Are they ready yet ? Indeed, does Boyata know that there’s a game on tonight, and is he going to be fully focused ? If any of the players who , if selected, needs to be focused, then it has to be the big Belgian.

A lot to think about, but the manager seems to have got the hang of these qualifiers, bar a few minutes against Rosenberg, so we should be able to trust him.

Though that won’t stop us from taking up our positions behind the couch at around a quarter to eight.

If we are stressed, put yourself in the gaffers shoes, and maybe then we can see why he’s a bit grumpy…

AEK Athens have never been eliminated by a Scottish side they have faced in European competition, but then again, nothing is forever.

Marinis Ouzounidous, the Greek manager, reckons his side will cope with what promises to be another loud night under the lights -new lights-at Celtic Park..

I know they call Celtic Park a Paradise, but it will be a noisy Paradise.

“We know that it won’t be a Paradise for us on Wednesday night.

“The atmosphere at Celtic Park is well known across Europe, but we will be ready for it.

He was hardly likely to say he’d asked the council for a noise restriction order…

The players should enjoy the game. They should not be stressed out and give 100 per cent, do their best and play their normal game.

“Our players are used to the atmosphere when it is very noisy, it is like that in Greece with some of the big teams and big games.

“There will be a big crowd but we will concentrate on the game plan.

“The Celtic fans will shout for their team to win tomorrow night but we can’t let that affect us. When we are in Greece, the same thing will happen. The crowd will shout for their team.

He’s got this sussed, hasn’t he ?

It is natural that Celtic are favourites. They are a huge club with big history and with a very good coach and they have been winning everything in Scotland in the last few years.

“They consider themselves a very good team and they have shown they can progress in Europe. They will hope to continue that success this year, so it will be a challenge for us.

“But we have come here to win.”

They’ll have to do that without their captain, Petros Mantalos, who is injured, presumably after Celtic cunningly agreed to let the Greeks train at Lennoxtown.

A glance at their recent results shows that they haven’t won a competitive game since May…

By the way, the number in the last two fixtures are kick off times, and not results.

And are unlikely to be, whether we sign a defender or not.

Recent events concerning the club include..

Ouzounidis is yet to lead his charges to a competitive win.

Something that a friendly Glasgow media might have been expected to pick up on.

Instead, we got this, from the Herald…

Demolished stadium, Greek economic crisis, dropping down the leagues, silverware drought . . . Can AEK Athens secure fairy-tale ending ?

Well, those chaps at the Herald certainly seem to hope so…

And no doubt there will be a few tense faces throughout the media during the game as well…

I know very little about AEK, but I do know that Celtic have picked up a bit of momentum during the last month or so, and that could be the difference.

Any sort of victory, preferably with a clean sheet would do for me.

Meanwhile, “rangers ” have secured another defender, Borna Fool or something, who had performed quite well for Osijek dring their recent clash, and this has somehow convinced the peepil that they aren’t skint after all.

Indeed, we can back this up as we have seen a picture of the deposit on the deal prepped and ready to head east..

If they don’t make the group stages of the Europa League, they may well be turning their lights out sooner rather than later…

But their support are a decent bunch, even offering advice on how to run a club to english sides who may be encountering financial difficulties.. Sheffield Wednesday are in a bit of trouble, and help was at hand…

Anyway, they still have their culture and traditions to cling on to if everything else goes awry…

You’d expect to see the little rat that is Nacho novo at one of these, given his desire to be liked and his disgust at a song which suggests the vocalist wants him to die in his sleep, which i believe is about as pleasant a death as one could hope for, so i’m not actually sure what all the fuss is about, but for Alex Rae, who is an employee of a national broadcaster to be in attendance…

That’s a question that the media will be priming, surely ?

Given his earlier tax exile in Govan along with his starring role at an anti Irish function, perhaps there is something to suggest he’s not the sort of person to be given a platform to air his views publicly.

Yesterday, we had this to consider..

Two honourable mentions…

Rogic was clear man of the match with fans and sponsors alike against Livingston. No harm to him, but Ntcham was simply outstanding and here’s why.

Funny how the wonderful journos over there have not questioned how they can afford yet another left back for over 2 million … massaged numbers me thinks … but can’t afford to up the offer for Laugh at Me ???
Another thing … they talk about the lad being a Croatian international who just missed out on selection to the World Cup squad .. however transfermkt would argue that .. seeing as he has played 3 international friendlies back in 2017 under the former coach… maybe a “Rafael Scheidt” style of international appearance?

I’m not worried about McGinn, I would have Brown, N’tcham, McGregor and Rogic ahead of him in any game; if Brown himself was injured or rested happy to go with the other three or bring in Kouassi, who I’m not convinced is an inferior player to McGinn anyway. Brendan has said repeatedly that he wants players who are better than what we have now, not just building a squad of players, so while I’m happy to take McGinn for future seasons, we don’t need him for this one, so happy to wait for him should he want to join. If he fancies Villa instead then good luck to you, maybe we’ll meet again.
Good luck to the bhoys tonight; Gordon, Lustig, Ajer, Simunovic, Tierney, Brown, N’tcham, Forrest, Rogic, McGregor, Edouard.

Kouassi seems to get better everey game he doesn’t play.

Im not saying he wont make the grade but I don’t see him being moulded into a young apprentice waitingto step up and usurp any of the current first team stars sadly.

Then again, I still get shocked when I hear Scott Allan trains with the first team.

I’m not missing any point; he’s not better than what we have now, so why go mental about buying him now? If we get him in January or June he can develop into the player Brendan, Lenny and Brown all think he’ll be in a Celtic jersey.
If he goes to England and we miss out, then your point becomes valid as we may have missed out, and any future purchase will likely be much higher eg James McCarthy. Until he signs on elsewhere as far as I’m concerned he can keep playing for Hibs until we get him when we’re good and ready. Nothing I’m saying above or in my previous post suggests I disagree about the boys current ability or future value, it’s an indication of my belief in our current squad that I rate them better; and all of them have done it in a Celtic jersey which McGinn has not yet had the chance to do.

Last week I was hoping we would go get that left back from Rosenborg..instead we bring Izzy back…hes a back up sure but its hardly forward planning is it?

Paddy Roberts…can he displace James Forrest ( still awaiting his new deal btw!), I don’t think so especially when Forrest offers much more cover to help out Lustig.
Granted Paddy is a good player but hes slight and possible injury target in rough SPFL and we have Lewis Morgan and Scott Sinclair, Johnny Hayes too in wing roles.

Its all getting nasty and the feel-good double treble factor is truly being soured with this ineffectiveness.

Is Jason Denayer the best our “top notch scouting network” can do?…no harm to him but I hoped we could reveal some new defensive names and faces like we did with Dembele, Ntcham and Edouard rather than fall back to “What Centre halves do we know might be fin the sale bin?”

if Denayer comes in then its safe to say Boyata goes out…again lose a player who has won everything since he joined for a guy who has bounced about more than a pinball, doesn’t sound like sound long term planning to me.

Those folk saying 3 weeks of the window left…the season started last week and the CL started 3 weeks ago. By time new guys get up to speed, we will have played a quarter of the season!

Deila’s Gone, get over it.

Although those players may have been signed when he was manager I doubt he had much to do with any of them apart from the Scandi ones.

Ironically did he tip us off about Johanssen as P&L was in contact, hedging his bets if Lennon left?

Rebus67

Reply to  Desi Mond

Desi,

I agree Meling would be a good buy.

If we have lost out to AV on McGinn, then we should seize the opportunity to sell them Allan.

On Roberts, why get Arzani on a loan if we intend to acquire him?

I agree that the focus on “old bhoys” and the English market illustrates scouting network not fit for purpose. Further who identified Compper?

Unless a cherry is identified on the quiet, and signed, it is time to shake up the scouting/recruitment division.

Tonight’s big game will give us a wee breather from all the transfer talk. It’s brilliant to have Ntcham available as he’ll have a big part to play tonight. It’ll be interesting to see what line-up Brendan decides to go with in the end as there are quite a few dilemmas. Hendry or Simunovic? Lustig or Gamboa? I don’t think Boyata is ready although he could come into contention for next week if he is still with us by then. Should we go 3-5-2 or 4-2-3-1? Would it be effective to play Griff alongside Eddy as twin strikers for the first time ever? I’d like to see us start with both McGregor and Rogic if Brendan goes with a 4-2-3-1 system.

Our current form at CP suggests we must be in with a great chance to get the right result, especially if we attack them with speed down the flanks. The Greeks are likely to play on the counter attack so we’ll have to be ready for that. The important thing is to maintain high concentration levels at the back for the entire 90 minutes and not to concede any goals tonight.

Brown Ntcham

Forrest Rogic McGregor

The likely loss of McGinn is the least of the club’s problems. IMHO it is extraordinary for BR to give an interview publicly stating that the club needs to complete transfers on some of his targets. Clearly something went on behind closed doors where BR failed to get his point across. Why else would he make such matters public? It was his last resort.
The loss of McGinn must be a major irritant to BR. The club ultimately matched Hib’s valuation but the player seems to be going elsewhere. It looks like the negotiations were mishandled. Matching a selling club’s evaluation for a player that has stated that he wished to come to Celtic and still not getting the deal over the line, suggests something is badly wrong with our negotiation competence.
Whatever happens now, a seed has been planted in BR’s mind that the board(or CEO) cannot or will not match his ambitions for the squad. From here it is a slippery slope towards him looking at fresh opportunities….and there will be a few of those.
How Celtic perform in Europe will be crucial this season in determining whether the manager stays longer than this season. All in my opinion, of course.

I remember reading that the morning after Lisbon Jock turned to Sean Fallon and said” What do we do now ?
Sick of Celts not building for the CL. These qualifying rounds are our CL. They nearly sell out and if we qualify the excuses are ready. Just maybe Brendan is starting the narrative laying the seeds of his discontent now. Ten in a row to me isn’t as big a deal as qualifying from the group or quarter/semi Europa. Get the players… we can afford them.

Brilliant news that Ntcham has recovered from his knock. Our players are showing great fitness and fine form at CP. Press them high up the park and hit them fast down the flanks with two main strikers. The Greeks are likely to play a defensive game but could be dangerous on the counter. An early goal could rattle them but we mustn’t switch off at any time at the back as conceding a goal would complicate things a lot. Should be a good game.

Well I hope that Daniel Arzani is as big a success at Celtic as his fellow countryman Tom Rogic, when you look back at when the Hibees won the Scottish cup, was that really nearly three years ago, oh my, but the Hibs team contained three loan Celtic players I think Stokes, McGeoch and Henderson. So if Mcginn as it looks like does sign for Villa then there better not be any more Celtic loan players and that is a shame for Lenny. He has a tough tie against Molde in the Europa’s and could have done with one or two Celtic fringe players on loan at this point in time. Putrid Petrie might be the loser and I would be happy with that, McGinn was the middle-man caught in the tussle between the future of Scottish football good governance and the continuing corruption that exists and will continue to exist if Putrid is allowed to become president of the SFA. Brrr gobshite of a man, recognised by the sunshine on Leithers.

Seems when only Celtic we’re interested so was John McGinn BUT when a second rate English side was interested and offered him 40k instead of 15-20 a week and obscurity he decided Aston Villa was the Club for him. Can’t blame him doubles his wages maybe more than doubles and lived in anonimity with no expectations of winning anything. Easy job.

Not getting McGinn just typical of the biscuit tin approach. Same with the state of central defence. Young boys falling asleep and getting found out again, not learning from the last round. Latest suggestion to punt Boyata and replace with Denayer whose worse and to bring back Izzy who we kept for a year longer than we should? WTF?..#frustrated. We’re all over this mob and just need to keep the heid, improve the final ball and keep it tight at the back. M on the Hoops

If Brendan wanted McGinn (and 3 bids suggests he did) then board’s job was to get McGinn – they didn’t so they have failed the manager. The manager is the guy who is generating the club’s cash riches, not the board. This has the James McCarthy scenario written all over it – do things on the cheap!

If Brendan wanted McGinn then the board have let him down badly. The club has generated so much income over the last 2 seasons and that has been done by BR not the board. This has the James McCarthy experience written all over it – do things on the cheap! When will they ever learn?

Well, that’s just topped off a poor week for the club’s, to think that was the Greeks first competitive match, and they played almost half of it with ten men!! Europa league beckons, but hopefully I’ll be proved wrong.

Total confusion, why did we play with Hendry and Ayer are Simo and Boyata transfer targets to a team with interest in Europe.
That is the worst performance from a team trying to go through the middle.
Too slow, too pedantic, but I suppose there is alwAys hope.
As for Lawell and his cretinous colleagues, they have probably won a watch, four qualifying rounds, look at the money earned, sad, sad, sad.
