Celtic Diary Sunday April 23: Treble Yell

Celtic continue the quest for the clean sweep of domestic homours with a tricky cup semi final against plucky newcomers “rangers “, a side who have reached this stage twice in their five year history.

Not to be underestimated, their line up will feature a calibre of player that Celtic must take seriously or the ibrox side will continue their march to the top of Scottish football.

It lookd like they will be without future England internatonal Wes Foderingham in goal, but they have a more than able deputy in the fellow Alnwick who helped Port Vale storm towards relegation in the english Third division.

They’re spoilt for choice at right back with Leaping Lee Hodson and jolly Jack Tavernier ( Ed-check these names ) competing for the spot, and with at least two of the Murray Park wonderkids in support of veteran Clint Hill then the lighteneing pace and surgical strikes of the Celtic front four will have their work cut out to make any impression.

With midfield maestro Willie Collum running the show from the centre of the park, and support from the eagle eyed Don Robertson at his side, Scott Brown and Stuart Armstrong wil have to be at their very best, as this part of the Ibrox control centre is more than efficient at helping the forwards, the evergreen Kenny Miller-why won’t the press use that phrase-, the battling Joe Garner and the other one who squares up to kids.

And then there’s that guy on loan from Arsenal. Or Chelsea, or somewhere.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers picked up the papers to find that his Ibrox counterpart is having another shot at the old mind games..

Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha insists he’s a nobody compared to Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers

Er, he’s pretty much a nobody compared to anybody.

I’m a no one in comparison to him and his position. I don’t want to even compare the trophies he’s won and what I did before I arrived here.

“I respect him and his team. But this is a different game, a different moment.

“This is an Old Firm game, it’s a one-off match and it’s a semi-final. So I can beat them.

Of course you can. There there.

Nurse, he’s fallen out of bed again!

As I am preparing my team, they are getting more convinced as the days pass that we can do it.

To be fair, they also believe that they are playing in an Old Firm game, so they’re not exactly the most cynical of audiences.

“I honestly don’t care if it’s 90 minutes, 120, or penalties. We just need to be ready and believe we can do it – with all due respect to Celtic’s manager and his team.

“I’m sure they feel the same way about us.”

I’m sure they do.

But can “rangers ” pull off a shock ? Not without at least one headline with a military theme..

Rangers striker Joe Garner is a time bomb waiting to go off and can’t start against Celtic says Derek Ferguson

“It’s not a day for Garner because he’s a time-bomb. If it’s tight, I’d look to maybe bring him on for the last 20 minutes.

“I’d say half an hour but with Garner, he could get sent off in the space of a minute.

“It’s part of his game to put himself about but in this atmosphere it wouldn’t be a clever thing to start him.

oh… please…

How are Celtic viewing this clash of the titans, this history soaked battle of two great armies, forever entrenched to fight a war that started in the Seventeenth century ?

We rang Brendan last night to ask how he felt …

“What fucking game ? Oh bollocks, I told the lads they could have the weekend off. ”

At this stage last year, an insipid performance from the hoops saw the Ibrox Pretenders advance to the final on penalties, and the word on the street is that they’ll be helped to do the same thing this season, although the penalties will be taken long before the end of extra time.

On a serious note, Celtic need to keep the heid, and play the team in front of them, and not the occasion.

For this squad of players, occasions such as this will become more commonplace over the next few years, perhaps on even bigger stages, for bigger prizes.

They will face better, more competent opponents, and will learn to deal with it.

This game, however, is just a practice for that.

Lets show them what we can do.

Ah, wait…our Kinning Park spy has released details of how Pedro is going to stop those rampaging runs from Keiran Tierney…

There was a strong show of support from a high place …

In fact, the airport was busy yesterday as support flew in from around the world..

but there is one reason that will make a victory today even sweeter.. one thing that re-inforces why we are the good guys when you strip away the hype…

Image result for george orwell quotes 1984 all of their ferocity

You know what I mean by that….

Yesterdays caption picture was this one…

Brendan Rodgers confronts Kevin Clancy

which kind of got lost in all the excitement, so lets try again to put words in the managers mouth..

One more thing, if you are going to be around the ground or around the town today, be safe, be good , and remember these wise words from John Paul Taylor…

Right, you’ve got your travel info, your good behaviour request and your no Pyro plea now away and enjoy your weekend, Hail Hail 🍀

I’m going to have a spot of breakfast, a cup of tea and I might just have a glance at the highlights later.

Hail Hail, to the bhoy from Stoke,
his diaries are crafted, they feel bespoke,
his humour comes through, with many a joke,
they make you splutter, laugh and choke.

Though word press sometimes provides some glitchies,
his captions have us all in stitchies,
knob of the week, is really quite funny,
you laugh and laugh, till your arse is runny,
better than a cartoon of Bugs Bunny,
it makes us feel all warm and sunny.

Well Celtic should win Scotty Browns appeal now after the tackles on Paddy Roberts.
Dembele will be a huge loss this half, but let’s hope we quickly get the second goal to kill them off.
Surely a red card has to come for the tackles they are putting in.

I think a 2-0 lead will be enough today, Sinclair needs to get on the ball more and get running at them.
We are in control but need another goal or three….

This is unfolding much as expected. Celtic dominating possession but as in previous games not killing off the opposition. sevco are very physical and should have lost at leadt one player. Dembele’s loss will disrupt the shape of the team and reduce our attacking style.

We need another goal quickly…if only to settle my netves.

The goal was a beezer…..a beautiful beezer.

A good result for Scottish football. Celtic looked tired in the last 15 minutes and Sevco had several chances to score. Apart from that, Celtic were dominant. Sadly, the performance of the officials did not live up to the occasion. How Rogic was not fouled in the last 10 minutes is beyond me and everyone. If the ref had given that, he would have been under pressure to send the Sevco player off….which should have happened. Sevco got virtually ever throw-in in the last 15 minutes. Very poor performance.

Apart from the last 15 minutes, Celtic’s football was excellent and a credit to the history of the club.

Jimmy,

A guy over on Celticquicknews said that the rules changed this season. If the tackle is outside the pen area on a goal scoring opportunity, it is a red card and a foul. If it is inside the area, it is a yellow plus a penalty. Only this sounds odd, it is to avoid the triple punishment of sending off, suspension and a penalty.

Just saying, like,

If only that Tom Rogic shot had gone in near the end. What a goal that would’ve been! Delighted overall and my only real concern was giving them so many chances in the last 15-20 minutes. There was some sloppiness with the passing in defence, especially between Gordon and Boyata. Dodoo also caused us quite a few problems. Great to be in another final though. Bring on the Sheep!

Una

Yes

Rebus67

Perhaps this is why BR is a successful manager and I am not, but does anyone else think it was a mistake taking McGregor off when he did? We missed him in the middle as he can play both defensively and in attack. Rogic can be dangerous but he does not have the ability to smother the midfield. McG off corresponded with their best period.

Just a thought on a grand day,

Even though we won well today, the officials were still shite,
Collum still a clown, the linesman I counted three times when he never raised his flag for three off sides, until they were in our box, how can a last man not be sent of when conceding a penalty?
It seems that the rules permit funny decisions when the Tic. take the lead, corners given when our players are fouled, throw ins when they are still given the wrong way. They really are atrocious, if Brown’s red is not rescinded then it should be.
Apart from that, a great first goal from Dembelle to Mc Gregor and a good first team performance, ripped thems to bits. So onwards and upwards.

Great result today but one point of concern keeps raising it’s head for me, Craig Gordon’s lack of concentration during games, in terms of his distribution.
Very slack at times and if he fucks about like that in the Champions league, we will be punished swiftly!
Put the laces tbrough it at times Craig!

Agree, and, I’m afraid, Boyata is too scary to be a centre-back at Celtic.
Craig Gordon, lacking a superior centre half needs to also command his box; he has rushes of blood which take him to ridiculous places at times and then sits back when he should be winning the ball at set-pieces. That said, there’s no better reaction ‘keeper and I love the big fella; never too old to learn.
Dedryck has a lot of plusses; aerially both in defence and attack. Great pace. Unfortunately, a poor decision maker and that’s why he needs to be moved on. He’ll drop a team-mate in the shit so that HE is not caught. Sorry, Dedryck, the fans see it all.
End of day, I’d have taken 1-0 to get that filth out of our road; we ended up winning comfortably but we almost threw them a lifeline as we fucked about for 15-20 minutes in 2nd half. THEY ARE NOT THAT GOOD. In Europe we’d pay for that fucking about. Needs to be eradicated.

Monti

Reply to  TicToc

TicToc,
Gordon is at this stuff in most games, lobbing it to either side, Brendan has clearly instructed him to build possession from the back, problem is is that Gordon is too slack in his distribution, it allows the opposition to close you down.
Boyata is a decent squad player but that’s as far as i would go with him, Sviatchenko should be playing imo!

Replied to you, got some shit error message and gone.
Gist is that Erik and Dedryck could form ONE player between them, if swapping height, pace, heading ability, football brain etc. Just one player. Jozo can become great with us; needs an accomplice. Celtic money etc., Jason Denaayer’s a stand out.
