Celtic Diary Wednesday October 19: Another Big Game

There’s been a lot of them this season, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Celtic go into tonights game against Borussia Moenchengladbach a point ahead of the Germans, meaning if we can match their results over the next four games we will have European football after christmas.

But,of course, we want a little more than that.

Celtic Park under the lights hasn’t been the same over the last few years, but the last game agaimst Manchester city showed that it can still be a special place, and if nothing else serves as a ditraction to opposition players and management.

Which is no bad thing.

While they spend a couple of minutes wondering if its all its cracked up to be, we can get ourselves a goal of a start, as we did against the English ( well, based in england ) side.

The improvement in Celtic, both in attitude and aptitude between the two previous European outings has been immense, and the hoops will look to show that we’re getting even better..

Brendan Rodgers thinks we have…

“Since we played against Manchester City we are a better team and we are getting better as each day goes on,”

“The younger players are gaining experience and this type of occasion will benefit the players. But of course we’re here to win and in our home games we want to ensure we get a victory.

“We always felt it would be fantastic if we could be in European football after Christmas.

“In a very short period of time the players have made great strides and this competition was always going to help us on the journey developing players.

“That will take time but you saw the performance against Man City, it was a real high level.

“Obviously, we were disappointed we didn’t get the win but the performance level was particularly pleasing.

“We showed we can compete at this level and you have to show that you can back that up and tomorrow will be another brilliant game.

“We have to set the tone for the supporters who are amazing and hopefully we will get the three points which would be a good return for us.”

Looking back, I remember being disappointed immediately after the Man City game, but gradually accepting a draw wasn’t a bad result. Craig Gordons late save had a lot to do with that.

As much as Celtic didn’t believe in themselves against Barcelona , the belief was there against City, it’s just that every time Celtic went in front the players seemed to be a little bit surprised in their own ability.

That won’t happen again, and thats why a genuine optimism of getting out of this group, either into the Europa or continiuing in the champions League, has now grown into a quiet confidence.

We’ll know more by around ten o’clock tonight, but wins for Celtic and Barelona will blow this group right open.

The prospect of travelling to Germany and to Manchester and looking for a win won’t faze Rodgers, as he is already working on that..

“My aim here is to build a team with power, with speed, high level of technical ability and unpredictability in their game, that scores goals, creates many chances and defends strongly, I’ve a way to go in terms of that. We’ve made a great start with the players and the few additions we have, but there will come a point where – wherever we are and whatever jungle we are in in the world – we’ll be able to impose our style. And I’ll be happy to go to wherever it is and play our way.”

Hairs up on the back of your neck yet ?

Then he spoke of the players, in a way that makes you think that this bunch might just have a shot at creating their own legend…

“In the modern footballer there is a lot of ego But this group have no ego, this group come in every day and we have set a standard from the first day in terms of training and what we expect on and off the field, and these guys are looking to deliver it.

“They might not always be at their best but they have given their best every single day, and I think that tells you where we are at. We have 28 players, a full batch available, and four goalkeepers, and they are all respecting that they will push one another every single day.

“I have never had a bad word amongst them. The spirit is great, they really galvanise each other and today we had probably the best I have seen in terms of the type of session we were doing. That is great for me because it’s a consequence of coaching and development. It’s about improving players, that is what they are doing, and they will get better as the season goes on.

“I know what the supporters want here, so I know what it feels like. To have that is a huge honour for me.”

From what he says there, he appears to be working on developing players, and making them better much more than previous managers. It’s almost as if the games get in the way of what he’s trying to do with them.

He also hints at not having given up on players such as Dedryck Boyata , Efe Ambrose, Gary Mackay Steven, Nadir Ciftci et al, and he is giving them a chance to work on their game and get back into the team.

Although the support may think they are lost causes, the manager clearly doesn;t, and wouldn;t besistate to bring them into the squad if they were ready, even if only to put pressure on thise holding the jersey.

Borussia do seem to be without a few of their main men tonight, but that really shouldn’t come into it. what happens on the park, going by what the manager says, will be largely dictated by the men in green and white, and its Celtic who will make Borussia change their ways to cope with us…

If that comes off, then Celtic should win comfortably. Borussia haven’t shown their best yet this season, struggling domestically and in Europe, and whilst there’s always the danger that they will see this as a season defining game, Celtic must not allow them to do that.

Any win will do, and hopefully Barcelona will keep up their one hundred per cent start with a win over Manchester City in the nou Camp, which will leave us level on points with the oil funded English corporate entity.

Rodgers won’t alter his line up or formation until about an hour into the game, and thats only if it isn’t working, so there’s unlikely to be any surprises tonight, but that doesn’t mean that the players should be sulking if they are left out. what it has shown them, as with Dembele when Griffiths was injured, you have to take your chnace when it cpomes along, and you have to continue to perform at a high standard.

The bookies are rarely wrong about how games will go, and they don’t seem to be too sure about this one, glancing at the half time /full time bets available with Ladbrokes, who sponsor the Scottish League..

HALF-TIME/FULL-TIME
Although I don’t gamble as such, I’d be tempted to put money on Borussia leading at half time, and Celtic winning overall. At 25/1 thats a tidy return for a shilling on the nose.
Twenty five shillings, in fact, roughly one guinea.
Its been a while since I’ve been to the bookies, though I do believe they have their own shops now.
By the way, all this talk of an exclusive new champions League might not be such a bad idea. If it guarantees entry to the top 16 teams in its history, that is…
If you ask me its a much fairer way of doing things than giving in to the big leagues.
Before tonights game, George Square seems to be the place to be, as the club are setting up a fan zone for everyone to meet up and, er, do whatever they do in a fan zone.
You never know, if this one works, they might set one up closer to the ground… which would be useful for travelling fans from the south or over the water.
Player appearances ?
Well, its a fair bet that those appearing won’t feature tonight.
Ad that dog had better look sharpish if he wants to do his walkabout prior to kick off.
Wee note about Hoopy the Huddle hound…
One of the member of the Lennon CSC , a regular over the years on the trip up to the games, even after being ejected from the bowling club after taking a nap on the bowling club lawn wrapped only in an Irish tricolour-dreadful state to be in before lunch- is still adamant that the mascot is called Lenny the Lisbon Lion and not Hoopy the Huddle hound , as it looks “fuck all like a dog “
It doesn’t do much good to point out to him that it looks even less “like a fucking lion ” .
There has been an appeal for a minutes applause during the second minute of tonights game for the life of Oskar Halliday, who passed away this week, and supporters are asked to contribute on the second minute.

Celtic fans have been urged to take part in a minute’s applause for tragic tot Oskar Halliday.

The two-year-old died suddenly last week after he stopped breathing at his family’s home in Edinburgh.

Now a campaign has been started on social media to honour the little boy during Celtic’s Champions League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday.

On a Facebook page called Celtic Supporters Faithful Through and Through a fan posted:

“I was asked to share this onto the page, the beautiful wee lad in the picture is Oskar Halliday, he sadly passed away last week, aged only two.

Glad to see the club experiment with the fanzone idea. In North American sport they are called “tailgate” parties and are a regular event just outside the ground. They are family affairs and trouble is rare.

However, I do worry that this event in G. square will become a target for less savoury elements in society. Enjoy but be careful. I hope the club has security there.

Ralph,
Great diary for putting one in the mood. Just one word of caution from an old grump. In spite of BR’s motivation and obvious improvements, I think we are still quite a way away from being at the top level. I accept that in one-of cup games anything goes and even the most unbalanced tie can throw up a freak result. Tonight, I think both teams are about on a par given current performances. However, even though Borussia are 9th in their league it would be foolish to compare that to us being top of ours as the leagues themselves are not like for like.

Furthermore, as underdogs often do and the wounded dog always does, Celtic played way, way above themselves against Man City. Whilst it seems to have done them a power of good confidence and maybe even performance-wise, once again it is not right to compare that by using domestic games as the yardstick. I think we are a long way yet from taking on the Man Citys and the likes with ease and genuine optimism. But I admit one never knows where real fight and conviction can take one. But I think for the moment that would be Celtic players at the top of their game.

I know I must appear like a dietitian presenting a menu for a pessimist’s meal. I assure you that is not the case. I have as much hope for tonight and our progress as anyone. Nor am I trying to curtail the air of confidence “around this place” – certainly not and long may it last. It has been missing for far too long. However, I have too often seen the biter bit, the over-confidence crushed and dreams shattered – and not just in bad times. So, I am not embarrassed to throw in a word of caution.

My main contention, however, is that we should not be disappointed if tonight’s or the rest of the games in Europe go belly-up. We should, somewhere deep inside, prepare ourselves to be disillusioned; to find out the Man city game was an exception. Since I do not believe BR has taken us to the level we are imagining, I for one, will not be too upset – other than hating to get beaten by anyone – if the results for the rest of our European campaign go against us. I see us right now as still on a pretty long journey with some smooth paths and more than a few rocky climbs ahead of us. I am content to build slowly but surely for Europe, as the financial inconsistencies hopefully dwindle, while totally dominating the domestic league. I will not torture myself with expectations until I see the potential. With that, I can console myself till the days of probable glory bring with them those inevitable bitter disappointments.

Prayers for wee Oskar who will be at peace. Also for his bereaved parents and relatives. I could not begin to conceive of their pain. God bless and comfort them. Though many miles away, I too will stand in respect at the 2nd minute.

Jeezoo Pensiomer Boy, I fell asleep reading that post and I woke up thinking I had missed the match!! A wee bit on the pessimistic side but understandable since we do have a tendency to get a wee bit carried away “One draw with Man City does not a Summer make”. But we all yearn to be the Celtic of old, the team that always gave 100% on the pitch and lay down to nobody, and for that reason we believe that THIS team might be capable of achieving great things.
So lets put pessimism aside and get right intae them Borussia Munchingbiscuits chaps !!! HH

Half – time:
Borussia very impressive and slick use of the ball causing all sorts of shit, however one world class ball from Rogic to Sinclair, who should ave been more composed, ma have seen us one up at the break.
Celtic’s use of the ball must improve greatly in the second half if we are to get something here.
The Germans are a very good side, better than o thought, but we are still in this game.
Be interesting if Borissia would be as slick on the ball if they go a goal down.

Two cheap, very very cheap goals..schoolboy errors ffs. I want a job at 20 grand a week where I can f*ck up and cost my employers millions and still keep my job. Borussia passed the ball TO feet fast along the ground, we lobbed passes AT the man giving their markers a chance to win the ball before he can get it under control. Really shocked by how poor we looked.

That was brutal, it looked like Deila was back in charge. We were content just to pass the ball between the back four and the goalkeeper, there was no movement in the midfield (except McGregor), Brown and Biton dropped so deep to get the ball that the available passes were backwards.

We got it so wrong tactically, they used the wide areas to out number us and we were left with three centre midfielder picking up one player, wondering why we are getting torn to bits. When they did go through the middle, the simple passes and movement cut us open. For their second they attacked with three players against our eight.

Not good enough.

Tactically they were better and outsmarted us, they started 442 with a central and holding MF, then switched to a flat midfield and the central MFs moved to the wings to outnumber us (sometimes with a striker drifting as well), they read the game well and their movement was far better.

Passing wise, I didn’t think they were that much more accurate but they were more ambitious, Toure and Erik swept up most of the central through balls, they had their best successes in the channels and relied on numbers to make space.

We were bereft of creativity and movement and seemed more adept to keeping the shape no matter what what was going on rather than taking the game by the scruff of the neck, spotting weaknesses and exploiting them.

jimmybee

Pensionerbhoy you nailed it m8. even before a ball was kicked you knew and spoke the words that most of us knew deep down, but were foolish to think we can beat anyone on our own turf.
I thought up until they scored Toure was immense, without him there leading the defence we would have been in deep trouble.
We looked as if we could cope against a very dangerous opponent, and once again our own stupidity works against us.
I feel for Toure, like I did with Effe, all that wonderful play before, forgoton about because of the mistakes.
They are a very well equipped side, and to be honest I would rather finish bottom now than the Europa league.
Brown Bitton got overrun, the tactics from the Germans was brilliant. Dembele Rogic Forrest nullified. Briwn Bitton over run.
Nothing we could do,yet we hung in,and Sinclair could have changed it.
But the best team won on the night, I’m saddened because we have beaten much better at home, but we are learning, and we have a lot to learn. HH

Jimmybee,
Thanks for puting the Johnny Doyle song on m8.
I think we are too demanding as a support at times, expect too much, i’m guilty of that as much as the next man.
I underestimated Borussia tonight, i thought Celtic would win, narrowly.
It took me about 10 mins to see the quality of this side, their passing was superb and they are a formidable side.
Well played Borussia i enjoyed your football even in defeat!

You should try watching these sides before we play them Monti then perhaps you might have a bit more respect for them when we meet them.
Whilst they have started poorly in the League (a better League than ours)they have played well in Europe all this Season.
They were without 3 of their best players last night the game out there is going to be a real tough match.
On the support I stated this under Deila and I still say the same thing now a vast number of Celtic fans have an elevated idea of where we actually are as a Club at this level.
Our top players are a 35 year old defender an 18 ear year old youth player,a Fulham reject and an Aston Villa reject.
Think about that then consider the level of player we used to both produce and bring in back in the days when we made our name in Europe.
No comparison mate we are a good way off 2003 and a million miles from Lisbon.
Metaphorically speaking.

My belief that Celtic could get a result last night had nothing to do with a lack of knowledge about German football.
