This happened after the Ajax home game, and led to the board asking Strachan, sometime around Christmas, to hold the fort until someone else could be found.

Deila made the fatal mistake of not demanding complete control over all aspects of the football side of the business. Whilst there is a need to delegate, others have far too much influence on how the team is run.

We are all aware of the way Celtic find players, using a database and certain agents, and although it is true the manager does have the final say, its only from a carefully selected list that he can choose.

These are the 51 players signed since 2011;

You can’t remember half of them, can you ?

If you can, you’ve probably been trying to forget them, so i’m sorry to bring them up again.

The point is, at the start of the season, Celtic needed more strikers. Nadir Ciftci came in, and then he was joined by Colin Kazim Richards and Carlton Cole. Who else was on the list that prompted Deila to choose those three ?

Stephen Hawking ? Stanley Matthews ?

Fine, Deila is away, but there’s a damn sight more needed here than a new manager.

To me, it appears the board are deflecting away from their own shortfalls. Don’t get me wrong, Deila did not stamp his authority on the club, and therefore did not command the respect, maybe even fear, that all good managers need. He lost interest some time ago, and wanted out.

Let him go.

He has shown, in his departing, to have more dignity, more , well, class, than anyone else associated with this omnishambles;

“It is vital that the Club comes first and instead of me being the focus, hopefully now the team and the Club can be the focus as we enter this final important period of the season.

“It was an absolute privilege to be named manager of Celtic, such a wonderful football club, and I have enjoyed my time here immensely. Its kind of tough to do that when someone keeps kicking away the foundations.

Its got to the stage where you don’t believe anything they say, Bankier, for instance, will no doubt read this, and claim I’m some sort of communist fifth columnist, and its all my fault, and others like me, that the club is currently knee deep in the big muddy.

Wherever Deila ends up, we wish him well.

So, what next ?

Can it be true that Mark Warburton is coming in ?

And Dave King is paying his wages ?

With an EBT ?

Don’t be silly. Dave King never pays for anthing.

Well, it won’t be dull next season, thats for sure.

Roy Keane is the preferred choice, and three entirely independent sources have confirmed this. Not only is he the preferred choice, he is more likely than not to be the next boss.

His reaction to the speculation ?

‘I’ve two jobs, ITV and Ireland. Especially Moyes, which is a relief. Apparently, he was “less than impresssive ” when he was spoken to.

There appears to be a new age about to begin at Celtic, and maybe the board were waiting “rangers” to provide serious competition, though if true that borders on neglect and means that the old firm truly are still firm, which would be reason enough for us all to chuck it.

Owner sometime operator Dermot Desmond has pledged an investment of £15m, plus whatever is raised from player sales, making a grand total of around £15m. This will be spread over two years, with £10m available initially.

However, there remains the problem of who chooses the players we buy. given the last list presented to Deila, the next one probably won’t have any footballers on it, as they cost too much and keep getting injured.

And if Ireland are at the Euros, who will welcome the players back for pre season, which due to the piss poor European campaign last year starts three days before the final league game of the season ?

A number two has to be found, and found quickly.

Deila leaving is not the main problem at Celtic. Its the fact that one or two others above him are staying.

Unless Keane stands up to Lawwell, then the whole charade will play out again next season, with Keane probably chucking it just after Christmas when he’s asked if his connections at Manchester United could maybe get us Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes in.

So, how do we prevent this…..?

Welcome to Mathematics Made Easy, another new section to the Diary.

Peter Lawwell took home around £900,000 last year. John Park, who is responsible for the scouting department, we hear, takes a massive £600,000 p.a. from the club.

Get rid of these two, and you have a decent wedge for Keane, and a decent wedge for Martin o’Neill to come in as director of football.

Keane can run the team, and will have total control over the playing side.

O’Neill will be the link to the board, in the way Lawwell should have been, doing the job that Jock Brown once did, but with the added football nous that is needed.

If Lawwell wants to stay, and i have a little sympathy for him here, as someone pointed out, he’smerely doing his job. whats worrying is that someone has chosen to reward him , grossly reward him, for doing it.

Thats the guy-or guys -we should be criticising.

Maybe Lawwell could take a back seat, with the two Irishmen running the football side of the business.

Maybe thats been the plan all along.

A short, and somewhat unusually worded statement from Celtic spelled the end of the Ronny Deila years-just about right to use a plural- after the…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
