{"id":8846,"date":"2016-03-24T09:30:49","date_gmt":"2016-03-24T09:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/etims.net\/?p=8846"},"modified":"2016-03-24T09:30:49","modified_gmt":"2016-03-24T09:30:49","slug":"celtic-diary-thursday-march-24-some-good-news-in-here-somewhere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/etims.net\/?p=8846","title":{"rendered":"Celtic Diary Thursday March 24: Some Good News in Here Somewhere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before we get going on the football news, here&#8217;s something that will make you offer thanks up above that you are not inflicted with the terminal stupidity and bigotry-and they do go hand in hand-suggested in this article from the Irish Times&#8230;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"color: #000000;\">Orange Order complains of \u2018cold house\u2019 NI civil service<\/h1>\n<h2 style=\"color: #515151;\">Objections to Catholic co-workers talking GAA, confirmations and wearing Lenten ash<\/h2>\n<section class=\"article_body\">\n<div class=\"article_bodycopy\" style=\"color: #444444;\">\n<p class=\"no_name\"><em>The\u00a0<a class=\"search\" style=\"color: #23517a;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/search\/search-7.1213540?tag_organisation=Orange%20Order&amp;article=true\">Orange Order<\/a>\u00a0has claimed that Protestants in the\u00a0<a class=\"search\" style=\"color: #23517a;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/search\/search-7.1213540?tag_location=Northern%20Ireland&amp;article=true\">Northern Ireland<\/a>\u00a0civil service are not being treated fairly compared with Catholics, citing double-standards in the acceptance of cultural practices.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"no_name\"><em>A number of the 25 people surveyed by the loyal order for a new report complained about Catholic civil servants coming into work with Ash Wednesday ash on their foreheads and having sympathy Mass cards on their desks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"no_name\"><em>It was claimed that this compared with some Protestant being instructed to remove \u201creligious tracts\u201d from their desks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"no_name\"><em>Catholic colleagues discussing the results of GAA games, or a parent referring to the confirmation of a child, were also cited as matters that made work life difficult for Protestant civil servants.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"no_name\"><em>The people surveyed for the report,\u00a0Fairness &amp; Fear: An Investigation of the Treatment of Protestants in the Northern Ireland Civil Service, were Orange Order members, or had close relatives in the organisation.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"crosshead\" style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #000000;\"><em>Cold house factor<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><em>The order said the survey was in response to an increasing number of complaints. Referring to a \u201ccold house factor\u201d for Protestants in the civil service, it said: \u201cOur members are saying to us that they are not being treated fairly and they are afraid to speak out.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Citing official statistics, the report said there were 300 fewer Protestants in the 25,000 civil service workforce than would be the case if the service \u201cexactly reflected\u201d the Catholic-Protestant population breakdown.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"no_name\"><em>One woman surveyed said line management specifically spoke of the schools their children attended playing \u201ccamogie and GAA\u201d. \u201cI see this as letting Protestant staff know who they are.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"no_name\"><em>The order also criticised the promotion of the \u201cLiofa\u201d Irish- language campaign within the civil service and the publication in a civil service newsletter of people wearing items of clothing bearing GAA logos.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"no_name\"><em>It complained that people wearing clothing with soccer logos were blurred out.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"no_name\"><em>SDLP Assembly member Patsy McGlone said the complaints about the GAA, Mass cards and confirmations were \u201cinsulting\u201d, \u201cdeeply bigoted\u201d and \u201cfundamentally stupid\u201d, and missed the fact that many Protestants take the sacrament of confirmation.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"row\">\u00a0It&#8217;s alright being a catholic, as long as you&#8217;re not so, er, Catholic about it.<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"row\"><a href=\"https:\/\/etims.net\/?attachment_id=4170\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4170\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4170\" src=\"https:\/\/etims.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blame-catholic-schools-comfort-t.png\" alt=\"blame-catholic-schools-comfort-t\" width=\"190\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/etims.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blame-catholic-schools-comfort-t.png 190w, https:\/\/etims.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blame-catholic-schools-comfort-t-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"row\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\u00a0Anyway, a wee reminder that intolerance is still out there, it&#8217;s just that these days the media have found someone else to be intolerant about, who have oil. It&#8217;s a little known fact that John Hartson was the last forward over six foot to score for Celtic. Probably. Well, it certainly feels like it.
