{"id":6997,"date":"2015-04-23T09:56:27","date_gmt":"2015-04-23T08:56:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/etims.net\/?p=6997"},"modified":"2015-04-23T10:01:55","modified_gmt":"2015-04-23T09:01:55","slug":"celtic-diary-thursday-april-23-a-bit-more-cheerful","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/etims.net\/?p=6997","title":{"rendered":"Celtic Diary Thursday April 23: A Bit More Cheerful&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Celtic moved eight points clear again in the league last night with a fairly comfortable but more nervy than necessary \u00a02-1 win over dundee at Dens Park.<\/p>\n<p>Those who were watching on streams had a bit of a shock when the stream went down, and Dundee scored while no-one was looking, thus setting up a tense finale to the game, but it all turned out nice in the end.<\/p>\n<p>Virgil van Dijk scored another free kick which added to Gary Mackay Steven&#8217;s opener, so it must be getting near transfer window time.<\/p>\n<p>Van Dijk has started to play well again, cynics might say its because he is looking for a move, but then again, cynics have been saying he&#8217;s been looking for a move since he got off the train at central station for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Which , according to the Scotsman, is why Celtic have made an &#8220;approach &#8221; for Brandon Michele, a 22 year old centre half with Brugge, who they say has been in &#8220;blistering &#8221; form.<\/p>\n<p>Something must have got lost in the translation there.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; Hullo, it&#8217;s the Scotsman here. This Brandon michele, what&#8217;s he like ? Picture: Getty\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Manager Ronny Deila broke his silence to speak about the defender situation-i.e., we won&#8217;t have any soon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\"><em>&#8220;I don&#8217;t want to comment on players who are at other clubs &#8211; I learned a lesson on that . But it is fair to say that we are looking for defenders.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\"><em>&#8220;I am not going to talk about any names at this stage but we know what the situation is. We have been planning for a long time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\"><em>&#8220;It is important to us that we have players who can come in and be ready to play because we have such important games in July. So we are always looking and always trying to get better. It hasn&#8217;t gone away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">Lets try to cheer up, and forget about it. It gives him the same rank as Michel Platini, who is the UEFA vice president, but we hear he wasn&#8217;t as good in midfield. I watch football week in week out and see similar incidents all the time. I can understand Celtic\u2019s frustration at feeling they should have had a penalty but the same thing has happened to every club.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m also in favour of using disciplinary evidence if someone deliberately elbows an opponent or goes over the top looking to deliberately injure an opponent. These are different things altogether.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u201cBut to go through this every time someone handles a ball? To make a decision like this? Maybe I\u2019m being strong here but I do find it astonishing.\u201d \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boyce is also chairman \u00a0of the refereeing committee, so his views should carry some weight. And he is on the right lines when it comes to apportioning blame for the fiasco to the match officials.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2c2c2c;\"><em>\u201cThere were six of them in charge of that match and none of them saw it as a penalty. If the decision was wrong \u2013 and I\u2019m not denying it should have been a penalty \u2013 then it\u2019s the officials who should be brought to task.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2c2c2c;\"><em>\u201cIf the SFA want to take action then do what other associations have done and leave those officials out of the next match.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2c2c2c;\">Leave them out of the next match ? Yeah. That ought to teach them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He&#8217;s spot on about the SFA claim that none of the officials saw the incident, and the possibility of them using that to defend them .<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"color: #2c2c2c;\">\u00a0\u201cThat would be even more ridiculous.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2c2c2c;\"><em>\u201cSituations like this happen week in week out where referees and officials make mistakes. I don\u2019t know if anyone has spoken to the referee \u2013 maybe he thinks he didn\u2019t make a mistake \u2013 but that\u2019s a different issue altogether.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2c2c2c;\"><em>\u00a0In my opinion, if the officials in charge of that semi-final were deemed not to have done their jobs properly then there\u2019s a method to deal with them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\"><em>I \u00a0know some people may think it wasn&#8217;t given because it was Celtic, but I totally disagree with that. I&#8217;d like to think the people in charge of the game were honest people who made an honest mistake. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">Like they usually do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">There it is. One or two have been given a public platform to air their own bigoted and insular views. You can feel the bitterness leap of the page in this, from Kenny MacDonald, of Sunsport;<\/p>\n<div id=\"contents\" style=\"color: #505050;\">\n<div id=\"contentsinner\"><em>PITY poor Celtic. What a week they\u2019ve had.<\/em><em>On the wrong end of a reffing howler in the Cup semi-final. Their treble hopes up in smoke. And now some loony from the Green Brigade has somehow got into their offices, fired up their computers, and sent a complaint about Sunday\u2019s game to the SFA.<\/em> <em>If not someone from the Green Brigade, then presumably it\u2019s been someone from the wild-eyed lunatic fringe element of their support.<\/em> <em>How else can you explain the sort of completely off-their-meds wibble-wibble hatstand stuff they came out with on Monday afternoon?<\/em> <em>With one single 113-word statement, Celtic managed to completely undermine the reputation their football has helped them towards this season.<\/em> <em>It would be a curious onlooker who suggested the champions-in-waiting haven\u2019t been the best footballing team in the country this season. They currently have the three best players in Scotland in their ranks, in Craig Gordon, Stefan Johansen and Virgil van Dijk. No one else comes close to that trio.<\/em> <em>Their new manager is a sane, articulate and cheery bloke who has somehow gone from being a total unknown to fans\u2019 darling in the space of six months.<\/em> <em>And now, this hogwash.<\/em> <em>There\u2019s something uniquely deluded about the supporters of a club whose trophy haul is one of the biggest in the world history of the game suffering from a persecution complex. But here they come, whining about being \u201crobbed\u201d because a referee made a simple mistake in a match.<\/em> <em>And such is Celtic\u2019s bloated, self-important sense of entitlement that they can come out with all this guff about being \u201cinundated\u201d and \u201cthe level of reaction from our supporters\u201d with a straight face.<\/em> <em>It\u2019s insulting to the intelligence of any sane onlooker and all Peter Lawwell and Co. have done is pander to the paranoid element of Celtic\u2019s support who see every decision which goes against them rooted in bias, bigotry and good old-fashioned sectarianism.<\/em> <em>Among the element of their support who take a more measured view of things, Celtic\u2019s puffed-up, arrogant response to being bounced out of the Scottish Cup is a source of embarrassment \u2013 as well it should be.<\/em> <em>They\u2019ll know that, for the foreseeable future, anything that goes against Celtic will lead to mocking suggestions they\u2019ll be seeking more \u2018clarification\u2019 for the latest perceived wrong done to them.<\/em> <em>But if Celtic\u2019s conduct over the matter has been risible, cowardly and morally indefensible, what of our chums on the sixth floor at Hampden?<\/em> <em>Ernie Walker and his ilk must be spinning in their graves at the SFA\u2019s craven response to Celtic\u2019s letter.<\/em> <em>In Ernie\u2019s day, Celtic\u2019s ludicrous complaint wouldn\u2019t even have got a written reply.<\/em> <em>He\u2019d have been on the phone, barking, \u201cIt says here you want to understand the circumstances of what went on. OK, here goes. The ref and his assistant made a mistake, end of story. Grow up.\u201d<\/em> <em>For Compliance Officer Tony McGlennan \u2013 who\u2019s looking a more petty and absurd figure with every passing week \u2013 to yesterday issue Inverness\u2019 Josh Meekings with a Notice of Complaint simply looks needlessly vindictive, and again you have to wonder if he\u2019d have been as pro-active on it if Celtic hadn\u2019t been banging their spoon on their high-chair in their customary manner of attracting attention.<\/em> <em>While we\u2019re at it, if Meekings is being done because of something the ref didn\u2019t see on Sunday, why hasn\u2019t Lukasz Zaluska been done for thumping Edward Ofere like a train hitting the buffers?<\/em> <em>The referee obviously didn\u2019t see that, or he\u2019d have awarded Inverness a penalty, no?<\/em> <em>The whole affair has left Celtic\u2019s manager Ronny Deila in something of a spot.<\/em> <em>He didn\u2019t show up for yesterday\u2019s pre-match press conference \u2013 John Collins toed the &#8216;we just want an answer to a question&#8217; party line, highly unconvincingly \u2013 but Deila will have to speak to the media after tonight\u2019s game at Dens.<\/em> <em>He\u2019s a sharp guy and I suspect deep down he\u2019ll be bemused at his new club\u2019s stance on the semi-final matter.<\/em> <em>Without any of the diseased worldview which infects some of Celtic\u2019s more rabid support, he\u2019ll know his side didn\u2019t get a penalty on Sunday because the referee made an error \u2013 an error, incidentally, which has conveniently removed the spotlight on how poorly his front quartet of Griffiths, Johansen, Commons and Forrest played in the game.<\/em> <em>Whether or not he\u2019ll say that, though, is another matter. I\u2019d anticipate more babble of the type Collins came out with yesterday about the club having \u201cmoved on\u201d when it\u2019s clear that\u2019s the last thing they want to do.<\/em> <em>Personally, I\u2019d like to see two things now happen. I hope tonight\u2019s Dens ref, Calum Murray, has a good game.<\/em> <em>Otherwise there\u2019s going to be more sanctimonious drivel from Celtic about how beastly their treatment from referees is.<\/em> <em>And second, for the good of the sport, it\u2019s to be hoped Meekings\u2019 appeal against his Cup Final ban succeeds.<\/em> <em>The precedent for supporting him is there, in Law 5 of the game \u2013 \u201cThe decisions of the referee regarding facts connected with play, including whether or not a goal is scored and the result of the match, are final.\u201d<\/em> <em>Amen to that.
