As in life, sometimes just talking through an issue can offer a solution, and leave those involved wondering why they didn’t think of it sooner.<\/p>\n

The replies to yesterdays diary, when we discussed how offended a certain section of society feels when what they feel is a sectarian term is used to describe them has come to a conclusion, and Scottish football supporters everywhere can now refer to them without fear of retribution.<\/p>\n

Or offending the delicate souls.<\/p>\n

The answer came from Cortes, who described a similar situation way back in the eighties, and the answer then would be a fitting way of dealing with the problem today.<\/p>\n

After the Falklands \u201cconflict\u201d squaddies assigned to tasks such as clearing minefields came into contact with locals whom they dubbed \u201cBennies\u201d after a character in the late, much mourned soap on ITV, \u201cCrossroads\u201d. Following complaints from islanders, disciplinary action was taken against soldiers. A few months later IIRC a Grauniad reported overheard squaddies referring to the \u201cStills\u201d and on enquiring was informed it neant \u201cThey\u2019re still effing Bennies\u201d. \u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

On the subject of money coming into the Scottish game, there was another intriguing reply yesterday that hinted at a possible “no, thanks ” from AG Barr, the soft drinks manufacturer, when they were in discussions about adding their name to the SPFL.<\/p>\n

Effectively, they asked for certain conditions to be met before attaching their name to the fiefdom of Regan et al.<\/p>\n

Such as the removal of Regan et al, and fair treatment for all the clubs in the league.<\/p>\n

I wonder, can anyone verify this, with perhaps a little detail.<\/p>\n

Oh, speaking of the SFA, congratulations to President Campbell Ogilvie, who finished a splendid eleventh out of twelve in a poll to see who would serve on the UEFA executive committee.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the endorsement from Stewart Regan didn’t help, largely because it was bollocks.<\/p>\n
