Poppy day,originally a time for silent reflection on the sacrifices made by servicemen during the two great wars, has become extended to include anyone who falls anywhere in the world whilst in the uniform of Britain.

With the British foreign policy constantly entwining with the domestic policies of several nations, its always going to be the case as the world grows smaller that some British residents will not be so keen to pay tribute.

Others, of course, will be overly enthusiastic, and then , with a degree of self righteousness , point the finger at those, who for whatever reason, don’t publicly support the British Legions annual day of Remembrance the way that they feel they should.

Personally, I took the dog out around half ten yesterday morning,and stood with a smallish crowd at a local memorial. I stood quietly and reflected upon those kids who went to war exactly one hundred years ago, and endured conditions that today seem completely unimaginable.

Thousands upon thousands lost their lives. Thousands upon thousands more returned with life changing injuries.

None of those soldiers survive to this day. but what they had to go through should never be forgotten, and the eleventh hour silence is a warning to the rest of us to try to prevent it happening again.

Its no coincidence that the last Prime Minister to fight in a war, Harold Wilson, was also the last one not to lead the country into one.

Predictably, and sadly, one or two voices broke the silence at Pittodrie. The silence may well have been broken elsewhere, but its Celtic who get the attention from the media. Sky TV began their match report by mentioning it…

Celtic gave their usual £10,000 to the Earl Haig Fund. Quietly, and without fuss. Thats the way it should be. Wearing a poppy embroidered onto a shirt isn’t paying respect because you want to, its because somehow the whole point of the day got lost, and some feel they have to.

Others, of course, positively look forward to the “celebrations ”

Me ?

I thought about this scene, and others like it;

No-one should end their lives in this way. But they did. and it may have been an entirely different world we live in had they not.

Ronny Deila has called those Celtic fans who were shouting disrespectful , and although he’ll probably be criticised by some sections of the support for doing so, he’s right.

How hard can it be to shut up for a minute ?

Back at the football, Ronny Deilas Celtic stormed/leapt/finally got to the top of the table with a controversial 2-1 win over Aberdeen.

Theres that word again.

So, how was it controversial ?

Well, Aberdeen should have had an early penalty-despite the rather dubious offence taking place outside the box, Celtics equaliser shouldn’t have stood due to a foul on the dons Andrew Considine, and Mikael Lustig put the ball out when the last minute corner, which led to van dijks winner, was awarded.

Alright, I’ll give you the last one. It did look like Lustig tapped the ball over the line.

Lets just call it an honest mistake.

On the plus side, we’re back where we belong, slightly behind schedule, but we’re there. Celtic collected three points at a difficult venue against a good side after a gruelling midweek game in Romania.

More of a plus was the celebrations at the end. The team showed great spirit in fighting for the win, and a sense of togetherness in showing their delight. Even manager Ronny raced over to join in, but thankfully kept his clothes on. I was a little worried there may have been a poppy planted in his bum to show he hadn’t forgotten what day it was.

Afterwards, the manager was still over the moon with the result.

Celtic boss Ronny Deila: Aberdeen victory was better than sex

Which prompted a text message from Mrs. Deila , which we managed to get hold of;

Bedre enn sex, eh ?
