They have ceased to exist.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut over the last couple of years they\u2019ve probably realised it would be beneficial to have them there.<\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, please elaborate, oh wise one..<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why the Champions League is so important, without that a lot of fans will say, \u2018I can\u2019t be bothered going this Saturday\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><em>Presumably his five years away have widened his knowledge of the game, and also re-educated him on economic conditions and social behaviour in the west end of Scotland.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know people who have that attitude. The Celtic players will have missed it as well.<\/p>\n<p><em>No you don&#8217;t. Interestingly, only a few of the first team these days will even have played against the old club. The rest can&#8217;t miss what they never had. And trust me on this one. They never will. Rangers \u00a0ain&#8217;t never coming back.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not being disrespectful to the teams in the league \u2013 the likes of Motherwell and Ross County \u2013 but the other matches just aren\u2019t the same as playing against Rangers, they never will be.<\/p>\n<p><em>No. Theres a lot less sectarian bile, and its usually safe to travel home afterwards.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is probably something missing to motivate them because they\u2019re miles ahead of the rest. If you look at it now Celtic could lose five or six games on the bounce and still win the league.<\/p>\n<p><em>Er, but not any of the cups.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would definitely help if Rangers were there. The fans would also feel they\u2019ve got more competition and then you would have that rivalry back.<\/p>\n<p><em>That rivalry that has seen innocent young men murdered for wearing the wrong top at the wrong time ?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have liked it if Celtic were still in the Scottish Cup \u2013 if they had faced Rangers it would have been a good game.<\/p>\n<p><em>Yes, a pleasant afternoon in the sunshine followed by an entertaining evening avoiding being beaten or slashed by angry bears who had just seen their team lose by a cricket score.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a couple of years time it could be back to Old Firm games which would be good.<\/p>\n<p><em>They died. Surely you must have heard the cheer ? Even in Moscow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I can understand how it\u2019s difficult for the Celtic players when they\u2019re so far ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Old Firm game was right up there for me because I\u2019m a Celtic fan and you grow up wanting to score the winner against Rangers.<\/p>\n<p><em>Which you did on a regular basis. The game has been rescheduled to Friday night, which actually seems to appeal to a section of the support. The atmosphere at the last Friday night game, against Motherwell, looked fantastic, so it may be that this will become a regular feature in years to come.<\/p>\n<p>Davie Hay, another of my heroes from years ago, writing in the Evening times,thinks they are here to stay.<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-abstract\">\n<p>&#8221; Scheduling games for this time is a real inconvenience to many fans, especially those who travel significant distances from up north, England and across the Irish Sea.<\/p>\n<p>But, as long as the broadcasters call the shots, there is nothing anyone can do about it.<\/p>\n<p>It might even suit some fans better to have the game at this time. And there will be those who prefer Friday night games to lunchtime kick-offs on a Saturday or Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s all changed since the days when I was playing.
