{"id":18453,"date":"2023-08-10T10:22:59","date_gmt":"2023-08-10T09:22:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/etims.net\/?p=18453"},"modified":"2023-08-10T10:22:59","modified_gmt":"2023-08-10T09:22:59","slug":"celtic-diary-thursday-august-10-there-may-be-trouble-ahead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/etims.net\/?p=18453","title":{"rendered":"Celtic Diary Thursday August 10: There May Be Trouble Ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scotland&#8217;s UCL campaign kicked off last night with &#8220;rangers &#8221; storming into a 2-1 lead over Swiss cracks Servette Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Whilst some might argue, and they&#8217;d usually be correct, this has nothing to do with Celtic,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t care less what happens to them in Europe, although the co-efficient is important, and so whether they win , lose or draw is irrlevant.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BBC Scotland, who covered the game live\u00a0 as a favour to their pals, had seen it as a win win situation for their channel, because the viewing figures would have been high for their back up channel, and with their recent comedy output coming in for criticism, there were hopes of a series developing around the club\/company.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What did concern me was the reaction of their players to the awarding of a penalty against them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;I was 100% convinced that it wouldn&#39;t be a penalty.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Cyriel Dessers was surprised by the referee&#39;s decision to award Servette a penalty in tonight&#39;s UEFA Champions League qualifier at Ibrox.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Rangers?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Rangers<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Servette?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Servette<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/UCL?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#UCL<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Dz7OBCx7dl\">pic.twitter.com\/Dz7OBCx7dl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; PLZ Soccer (@PLZSoccer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PLZSoccer\/status\/1689394651621367808?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 9, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We were surprised as well, and probably for the same reason.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Scotland, they have gone 56 consecutive games without conceding a penalty.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In europe, it&#8217;s a regular occurence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Clearly the player above thought it was a universal decision not to disadvantage his team by applying the rules&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not surprising was that it was a handball, not surprising was that it was Conor goldson who handled it, and not surprisingly wither, he chased the referee for a bit, wondering why the rules had suddenly changed and no one had told him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>for the rest of us, it was a reminder that there is a different rule book for them when it comes to penalties.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>VAR was supposed to put a stop to that domestically, but what it has actually done has enabled two further referees, Greg Aitken and Andrew Dallas, to supervise and correct any decisions they feel are wrong, and given that both of these men are at the very least under suspicion of bias, we could be in for a long season.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;get the ball into the box &#8221; tactic employed by Mickey Beale is not just to create chances for his players, but to create chances for the officials to award penalties and free kicks, which in fairness to Captain Disappointed is something he is quite adequate at converting,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With the implementation of the new added time rules, we&#8217;re going to see a lot more decisions late on that will help to save them a point or two.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Recently, John Beaton, another not known for his impartiality, spoke about the &#8220;rangers &#8221; penalty statistics&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"continue-read-break\" data-t=\"{&quot;n&quot;:&quot;blueLinks&quot;}\">\u00a0<em>\u201cYou are asking for an impossible question to be answered. Stats are stats and you can present stats on how x, y and z have happened. All we can do is show you things on an incident by incident basis.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-clear-div\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-expanded=\"true\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"div-related-embed\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-content-embed-type=\"auto\" data-reset-char-count=\"true\" aria-expanded=\"true\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-t=\"{&quot;n&quot;:&quot;blueLinks&quot;}\" aria-expanded=\"true\"><em>\u201cAnd if you show us something and say, \u2018how is that not a penalty kick\u2019 then we can talk about that incident. But when a club goes a period of time without conceding a penalty then we need to look at incidents individually. It\u2019s impossible to comment on a longer term statistical thing.
