{"id":17536,"date":"2022-03-05T08:50:19","date_gmt":"2022-03-05T08:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/etims.net\/?p=17536"},"modified":"2022-03-05T08:50:19","modified_gmt":"2022-03-05T08:50:19","slug":"celtic-diary-saturday-march-5-sunday-on-our-mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/etims.net\/?p=17536","title":{"rendered":"Celtic Diary Saturday March 5: Sunday On Our Mind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With Celtic sitting fairly comfortably at the top of the table, having rediscovered how to win matches with a 2-0 win over St mirren in the week, the club can only throw away the title from hereon in.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And if we&#8217;re going to allow &#8220;rangers &#8221; back into this title race, then this is the weekend we&#8217;ll do it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, a win over Livingston tomorrow will boost the morale of all at Celtic Park&#8230;and the fans&#8230;.and begin the drive for two more trophies in earnest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Celtic have struggled against Livingston.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Of that, there can be no doubt, but each game is totally different from the others, and if the hoops play to their strengths and don&#8217;t fall for the rope a dope tactics employed by the Lothian Legbreakers then all will be well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The plastic pitch is often cited as an excuse, but since Celtic train on a similar surface at Lennoxtown, they should be used to it, and if it is a problem it&#8217;s only in the heads of the players.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Or do they?\u00a0 This bizarre statement from manager Postecoglou suggests they don&#8217;t&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>We will address it. We have an artificial pitch at Lennoxtown and we will train on that on Saturday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe will get the players an understanding of it again, but ultimately it\u2019s about the way we approach our football.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nah&#8230;surely not ? Surely, given our recent performances on the carpets he&#8217;s tried to address it before ?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He continues, and in doing so does try to take the focus away from the pitch and put it onto the players&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>On an artificial pitch there are still fundamental principles of our game that we can do.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat we didn\u2019t do at Livingston last time are those things.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe got bogged down in the disappointment that the game wasn\u2019t going our way, without looking for the solutions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be there and players need to address that and adjust to it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt is a real thing \u2013 the pitch plays differently. There is no point trying to ignore it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI can tell the players to ignore it and play their normal game, but you do have to adjust.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt becomes a little bit of a different game on that surface and the players need to be prepared for that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBut that doesn\u2019t mean it stops you from being successful.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou just have to adjust your game and your approach, so that it removes any negative impact the pitch has on our football.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From that I can conclude the players have a problem with it, and maybe as a result of that we&#8217;ll see a few changes to the line up tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Giakoumakis and Maeda up front ?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Given the propensity for Livingston to recognise the whistle at kick off as a signal to fall back I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen their tactics board for this game, and it&#8217;s not pretty&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2018\/Feb\/05\/2001873498\/1920\/1080\/0\/180216-A-PO640-007.JPG\" alt=\"African-American History Month: World War I World War I &amp;amp;#39;Hell Fighters of  Harlem&amp;amp;#39; proved their mettle, patriotism in combat &amp;amp;gt; Joint Base San Antonio  &amp;amp;gt; News\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The manager also dismissed claims that Livingston are a bogey side, and to be fair, their results this season suggest that they are a bogey side for more than just Celtic.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s all more indicative of the fact they are a good side. There is no doubt it will be a challenge for us but I don\u2019t go there wearing my lucky socks or anything!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe will go there and prepare the best way we can for the game<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTo be fair, I\u2019ve only had one visit there. \u2018Bogey\u2019 would be if I go there half a dozen times and don\u2019t win.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI was disappointed back then because we didn\u2019t play well and deal with the situation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt was also our third defeat in the first six league games and you knew we would have to be pretty good after that to make up the ground.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That last bit suggests he&#8217;ll have pointed out to the players that Livingston are not a bogey side because they beat us earlier in the season, because everyone else was beating us as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There is one thing to watch out for though&#8230;.the man in the middle&#8230;. It also owns a newspaper, magazine, and talent management business.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So perhaps when you look at the bigger picture, the board have actually done their job, and taken the club to a wider audience, and let&#8217;s face it, when you consider the possibilities of a simialr deal in Japan, that Bill Leckie quote, made about a now defunct club disappearing over the horizon, all he got wrong was which club .<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Just for giggles, here&#8217;s the full piece, from 1997&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>All I can say is, massive respect is due to Rangers \u2013 and Muz in particular \u2013 for keeping Brian Laudrup in the game.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And before all you Celtic fans \u2013 including the one standing over me with a<\/em><br \/>\n<em>rolling pin as I write this \u2013 start giving it the there-ye-go-ah-always-<\/em><br \/>\n<em>knew-he-was-wanna-them paranoia, remember one thing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Rangers also beat you when Laudrup WASN\u2019T playing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This time last week I was all set to write a piece on how they had finally,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>eventually, taken the leap forward they\u2019ve threatened for so long; but then<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the news broke that their greatest asset was leaving.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Suddenly all the summer\u2019s advances \u2013 the arrival of a foreign coach, the<\/em><br \/>\n<em>signing of Thern and two top-drawer defenders, the Defenders lost their<\/em><br \/>\n<em>sheen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You wondered just what a downer there would be on the day their Great Dane<\/em><br \/>\n<em>went walkies for good.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A couple of seasons ago, last summer even, you wouldn\u2019t have bet tuppence on<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Muz being able to talk the boy round. But something has happened at Ibrox,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>something you can\u2019t put your finger on, which seems to have propelled them<\/em><br \/>\n<em>into a different orbit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And so, as Ajax sat back waiting with a spacecake and an Oranjeboom and<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Fergie came out gloating that the player was his, Muz quietly got down to<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the business of making Laudrup stay.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Were I a Celtic man, I would be so afraid. No manager, no sign of a manager,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>two biggest names threatening to do a bunk, no sign of new blood, season<\/em><br \/>\n<em>ticket holders in a major huff.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Call me picky, but things do not look good. And hell mend them.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I cannot believe how quickly and how far Fergus McCann has allowed things to<\/em><br \/>\n<em>slip, especially after Tommy Burns took them so close.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It is easy to say now that Burns was a failure, but what is nearer to the<\/em><br \/>\n<em>truth is that he was a very good manager with the wrong club.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The closer he got to toppling Rangers, the more his emotional attachment to<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Celtic overtook the rational thinking his job required.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Others would disagree, but I reckon Burns will go on to be a huge success<\/em><br \/>\n<em>elsewhere, starting in King Kenny\u2019s bootroom at the Toon.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>What is not up for argument, though, is that Celtic are in a far worse state<\/em><br \/>\n<em>without him than they were with him. Rangers are leaving them further and<\/em><br \/>\n<em>further behind with every passing day and there is no white smoke from the<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Parkhead chimney to signal a comeback.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Ibrox men are, I reckon, one more signing away from finally leaving<\/em><br \/>\n<em>their greatest rivals \u2013 and, therefore, the rest of us \u2013 so far behind them<\/em><br \/>\n<em>they will be no more than a dancing dot on the horizon.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Who is that signing? I\u2019d go for Batistuta \u2013 though Muz says no \u2013 but whoever<\/em><br \/>\n<em>they end up with he will be big time and he will be here soon.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s enough to make any Celtic fan hide behind the couch. Sorry? Oh, you<\/em><br \/>\n<em>already are.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Though in fairness, they did actually disappear.
