You are joining a great club with a proud past who have been a little neglected of late, largely down to a board of directors who think they know what the supporters want, but frankly they’ve lost touch with us.<\/p>\n

However, if you are a manager who has a footballing philosophy that involves entertaining the crowd, playing attacking football and winning trophies in the way they should be won, then they might have finally got something right.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
And we hope your stay here is successful, and you achieve the recognition and respect that seems to have eluded you in the past.<\/p>\n

No doubt you will have heard of Celtic, the original pioneers of total football, and no doubt you will be aware of some of the great names who have plied their trade throughout the years.<\/p>\n

If you haven’t already, you’ll be spending your free time looking through the clubs history and identity. I’d suggest you look as far back as you can, which will give you a better idea of who we are, where we came from and what we stand for.<\/p>\n

Trust me, no one you will have spoken to so far has the faintest idea of what that is.<\/p>\n

We need a fresh pair of eyes not only on our own club, but on our own ambitions.<\/p>\n

Thats why we need someone who has been around a bit, who sees things outwith the parochial eyes of Scotland and the somewhat arrogant eyes of the British media.<\/p>\n

Recently , our clubs ambition has been directly linked to the rapid growth of a new club on the other side of Glasgow…for some reason, during its infancy, our board thought it was just enough to stay ahead of them to maintain the level of success we’ve had over the last few years.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
As anyone knows though, if you take your foot off the pedal, you slow down, and that encourages those behind you to speed up, and last season the inevitable happened.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
So you come to Glasgow with quite a lot of work to do.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
What is important though, is that you do it your way.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The first time someone says that’s not how we do things over here, punch them squarely in the mouth, as hard as you can.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
In fact, your first press conference should give you that opportunity.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The press in Scotland is like no other in the world.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
It doesn’t have any journalists working in it, for instance, just some blokes who write what they think their readers want to hear.<\/p>\n

Which , incidentally, as Celtic fans are a little more politicially and socially aware , means that we get less of their bullshit than others do, but they do like to make mountains out of molehills where bad news stories are concerned.<\/p>\n

You’ll see that for yourself, unless you apply the punch in the mouth strategy.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
You won’t get the respect you deserve from them, if the late Dr Jo Venglos was around, he’d tell you.<\/p>\n

One of them challenged him to a race around Celtic Park shortly after his arrival, which apparently was his way of saying the doc was unfit for the job.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
As far as the fuckwits in the sports media are concerned , you’re an unknown from Drongo Bongo Land who is to football what Kylie Minogue was to complex musical arrangements.<\/p>\n

Put them right from day one.<\/p>\n

It might be viewed as hostile , and you won’t win many friends amongst them, but if you do your job and make Celtic successful, especially outwith Scotland, then they wouldn’t have been your friends anyway.<\/p>\n

Start as you mean to go on.<\/p>\n

for example, when one of them mentions that you have to knock Rangers off their perch, and stop them from winning a 56th title, ask them how they could have possibly won 55 in just ten years of existence.<\/p>\n

If you need a copy of a letter or , indeed, the original that clearly states they are a new club, give me a shout, I’ll get it to you so you can wave it at them.<\/p>\n

It’s signed by the head of club licensing at UEFA, who knows what he’s on about.<\/p>\n

Do that, and there will be children named after you by the end of next week.<\/p>\n

I digress, it’s all too easy to get lost in the problems we have had here down to a compliant board who put the balance sheet ahead of the team sheet.<\/p>\n

Don’t fall for their bullshit.<\/p>\n

You are about to lead the biggest and most passionate support in the world into the next phase of their history.<\/p>\n

All we ask is you do it the way you see fit, and if anyone stands in your way, be they directors or journalists……….or the SFA, you’ll see what I mean with them the first time you speak your mind…..<\/p>\n
