{"id":16098,"date":"2020-10-01T08:34:45","date_gmt":"2020-10-01T07:34:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/etims.net\/?p=16098"},"modified":"2020-10-01T08:34:45","modified_gmt":"2020-10-01T07:34:45","slug":"celtic-diary-thursday-october-1-seeking-the-truth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/etims.net\/?p=16098","title":{"rendered":"Celtic Diary Thursday October 1: Seeking The Truth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It doesn&#8217;t seem like five minutes since Celtic last played a European game in the Bosnian capital, such is the nature of European qualification football these days, though I did have to check to remind myself of the result.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On July 9 last year, the hoops won the first leg 3-1 over there, and rounded off a fairly routine win with a 2-1 home win.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On that occasion, Sarajevo took the lead and Celtic replied with goals from Michael Johnstone, Oddsone Edouard and Scott Sinclair.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Only Edouard will feature tonight, and given his recent lollygagging we&#8217;d be better off sending out Johnstone, or even ringing Sinclair and asking if he&#8217;s doing anything.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a danger that Sarajevo will cause a shock, as there always is at this level, but surely Celtic will take this game seriously, as defeat will mean no European football , and given the strides made with the co efficient recently, that would be a disaster.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Though I have this recurring vision of a Celtic View headline that says &#8220;Now we can concentrate on the league&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Albien Ajeti has shown how fragile he is, and hasn&#8217;t travelled, James Forrest will be out for a few weeks with his ankle that was causing him problems for a while, indicating that the medical staff still haven&#8217;t got the hang of properly examining and treating players, and when you consider what Keiran Tierney said when he compared the treatment at Arsenal with that at Celtic, that has t be cause for worry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Factor in the kicks and trips that referees are already allowing to be dished out to players in the hoops and we&#8217;re storing up problems for later.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There should still be enough to see Celtic through in the squad, and their performance last week in Riga was focused and mature enough to offer hope, but I suspect a few of us will be a little nervous for a lot of the time tonight.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Premier sports, who made a big thing of covering Celtic&#8217;s qualifiers on their sports channel are not showing the game tonight, and as they had promised they would, not only should fans cancel their subscription , maybe ask for a refund as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the fact that Celtic should be into the play offs directly next season has influenced their decision to abandon their hooped clientele, knowing that they won&#8217;t be subscribing next year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Celtic TV will have a go at showing the game, which is always an adventure, and the good news is that season book holders won&#8217;t have to pay.\u00a0 Though there is the suspicion that given the quality of the channels broadcasts this is merely to save them coming to work tomorrow to process refunds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Website Celtic Quick News was the first to reveal the Provisional Squad this early this morning&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>PROVISIONAL SQUAD:\u00a0<\/strong>Barkas, Bain, Hazard, Elhamed, Bitton, Duffy, Ajer, Jullien, Frimpong, Taylor, Brown, Christie, Ntcham, McGregor, Elyounoussi, Edouard, Klimala, Turnbull, Soro and Griffiths.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll be revealing both the &#8220;Real &#8221; (November 2017)\">citation needed<\/span><\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0while an\u00a0<a title=\"Officer cadet\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Officer_cadet\">officer cadet<\/a> in Scotland at Gailes, Ayrshire.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You would have thought the promise of playing for such a great club&#8230;it was a club in those days&#8230;, combined with a job in the shipyards for the rest of the war would have seen him snap their hand off&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Still, no doubt he&#8217;d have been delighted to have a postbox painted black in his honour. Thats right up there with this tribute, visible at Northampton&#8217;s ground..<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Through his actions, W. D. J. Tull ridiculed the barriers of ignorance that tried to deny people of colour equality with their contemporaries. His life stands testament to a determination to confront those people and those obstacles that sought to diminish him and the world in which he lived. It reveals a man, though rendered breathless in his prime, whose strong heart still beats loudly.<\/em><sup id=\"cite_ref-32\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_Tull#cite_note-32\"><em>[<\/em>29]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>and the&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>road behind the North Stand (The Dave Bowen Stand) at Sixfields Stadium is named Walter Tull Way, and a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Public house\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public_house\">public house<\/a>, adjacent to the stadium, bears his name.<sup id=\"cite_ref-33\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_Tull#cite_note-33\">[30]\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not to be outdone, Rangers also made their own tribute to a player who didn&#8217;t play for them&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>On 28 July 2004, Tottenham Hotspur and Rangers contested the &#8220;Walter Tull Memorial Cup&#8221;. Rangers won the Cup, defeating Spurs 2\u20130 with goals from\u00a0<a title=\"Dado Pr\u0161o\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dado_Pr%C5%A1o\">Dado Pr\u0161o<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Nacho Novo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nacho_Novo\">Nacho Novo<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Rangers_see_off_sorry_Spurs_34-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_Tull#cite_note-Rangers_see_off_sorry_Spurs-34\">[31]\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This trophy got a mention on Follow Follow&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>And there was a cup, the Walter Tull Trophy, generously donated by the Rangers Supporters Trust, and won by Rangers defeating Spurs 2-0 at Ibrox.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This could\/should have become an annual event, alternating between Glasgow and London, but stand-in Chairman, John McClelland tried to trivialize it, and this saw Rangers captain for the night, Stefan Klos, ending up getting presented with the trophy in the dressing room post-match.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On the afternoon of that day, the RST football team beat the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust 6-2 for a mini-version of the proper trophy, in a match which had to be played at the Firhill complex, because McClelland decided there was no pitch available at Auchenhowie that afternoon.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Tottenham website has a slightly different view&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The winners of our friendly against Rangers at Ibrox will receive the Walter Tull Trophy &#8211; in recognition of a player with close links to both teams and in keeping with both clubs&#8217; anti-racism message.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Tull was English football&#8217;s first black outfield player when he signed for Spurs in 1908.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He moved to Northampton Town and was due to join Rangers in 1914 but was prevented from doing so as war broke out.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He was keen to be closer to his brother who had moved to Scotland to become a dentist but he never played a competitive game for Rangers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Tull became an officer in the British Army and was killed on the Western Front in 1918.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The cynic in me is drawn to this line&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>in recognition of a player with close links to both teams and in keeping with both clubs&#8217; anti-racism message.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One wonders if it was discontinued when organisers noted that there wasn&#8217;t a particularly clear anti racism message eminating from Ibrox&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There seems to be a problem with the trith nearly everywhere these days, including popular tv quiz show &#8220;The Chase &#8220;, where some dopey contestants answer relatively simple questions for cash prizes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Sun tells us that you can even get the prizes when you answer incorrectly, a new and refreshing approach to quiz shows&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Presenter Bradley Walsh asked: &#8220;Which Scottish football team was triple-relegated in 2012?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>One of the contestants, Ben, then answered &#8220;Rangers&#8221;, to which Bradley replied &#8220;correct&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Oh, the kerfuffle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Had I been that contestant I would have contested that particular outlook on the facts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As have many Celtic fans, prompting much mirth in the media&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Record&#8217;s Mark MacDougall, who clearly believes that Rangers are still the same club, thus rendering any opinion he has rrelevant, called it a &#8220;debate &#8220;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Don&#8217;t let anyone tell you Scottish football isn&#8217;t the most bizarre place in the world.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When the creators of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/itv\" data-content-type=\"section-topic\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\">ITV&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0hit gameshow The Chase made their questions this week, they wouldn&#8217;t have predicted the fallout north of the border.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A question asking which Scottish club was &#8216;triple relegated&#8217; in 2012 sparked anger among sections of the Celtic support who insist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/rangers-fc\" data-content-type=\"section-topic\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\">Rangers<\/a>\u00a0were liquidated rather than relegated.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>That&#8217;s a debate that has been raging on in Scottish football for eight years and although the vast majority of football fans moved on from it seven-and-a-half years ago, there&#8217;s still some who don&#8217;t agree.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is a national newspaper.
