Celtic eased back into the swing of things yesterday with a 5-0 win over Brechin City. It wasn’t the most difficult of games, but whilst watching one could not shake the feeling that if you could transfer the enthusiasm of the Brechin players into the Celtic players you might well have one hell of a side.<\/p>\n

Not just based on yesterdays game, but on the season so far.<\/p>\n

The early James forrest goal -just two minutes in-undoubtedly settled the nerves, and further goals from Sinclair, Ntcham, Boyata and Edouard made it all look rather easy, although there were a few dicey moments as Brechin refused to be overawed by the occasion.<\/p>\n

Brendan seemed happy enough to get it all over with..<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that you come back and you want to get into your rhythm as soon as you can,\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBrechin came with a good spirit. They have had a tough season so far but history tells you these types of games can be difficult for you.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe started the game well and created chances and took our goals well at good times. It was a professional performance.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI never disrespect any opponent as there never any easy games now. I felt I could have picked whatever team and would still have a strong side, but it was important to get our rhythm back early and get a good result.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSimilar to last season when we came back and played a team from a lower division, it\u2019s important you go and work well, and we did that.<\/em><\/p>\n

“I said to the guys that the plan today was to see if we could get the job done as early as we could, as I wanted to give some oxygen to the players who hadn\u2019t been playing so much.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Presumably to keep them awake.<\/p>\n

Oddsone Edouard started up front, still the only forward to start in consecutive games for the last few months, and he did score, which is what he is paid to do, but it does raise doubts about the other two.<\/p>\n

Leigh Griffiths didn’t even make the bench, as he is injured.<\/p>\n

He had an ankle injury at the beginning of the week so he hadn\u2019t trained and it was too much to risk him today,\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHe is going to join in a session after the game and hopefully he will come through and that will allow him to be available for Tuesday.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Well, that explains it. If I join in\u00a0 a session I’m usually not much good for anything the day after.<\/p>\n

And Moussa Dembele, who was on the bench ?<\/p>\n

The problem, apparently, is in his own head.. he’s fretting over the fact that so far only Brighton and Crystl Palace are considering\u00a0 a bid. Which wasn’t how it was supposed to pan out.<\/p>\n

Rodgers explained…<\/p>\n

“There has been nothing official as yet. I know some enquiries have come through to Peter [Lawwell, chief executive] but nothing concrete,”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

“The boy is fine, he is training, he is working but it is clear that he has probably not been quite the same as what he has been for probably over a year or so. My job as the manager is to ensure that the focus is purely on Celtic and the team.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0“He is a good kid and for a lot of players January is a difficult window – lots of speculation – but my job is always to protect the club and make sure that everyone who plays is totally focused. That sounds to me like he knows who he wants and is just getting them over the line, but as ever, the top players will wait until the last minute before committing themselves, and quite rightly so, from their point of view.<\/p>\n

Knoche is a product of\u00a0VfL Wolfsburg<\/a>‘s youth academy, first entering the club at the age of thirteen. Neven Suboti\u0107<\/b>\u00a0(pronounced\u00a0<\/small>[n\u011b\u028ben s\u00fbbotit\u0255]<\/a><\/span>;\u00a0Serbian Cyrillic<\/a>: He\u0432e\u043d C\u0443\u0431o\u0442\u0438\u045b; born 10 December 1988) is a Serbian\u00a0footballer<\/a>\u00a0who plays as a\u00a0centre back<\/a>\u00a0for German club\u00a0Borussia Dortmund<\/a>.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0He made his first-team debut in the\u00a02006\u201307 season<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a01. FSV Mainz 05<\/a>. In 2008, he signed with Borussia Dortmund.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Born in\u00a0Banja Luka<\/a>,\u00a0Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia<\/a>, to\u00a0Bosnian Serb<\/a>[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0parents, father \u017deljko from the village of\u00a0Kula\u0161i<\/a>\u00a0(sr<\/a>)<\/span>\u00a0and mother Svjetlana from\u00a0Brestovo<\/a>, Suboti\u0107 spent his early childhood in\u00a0Prnjavor<\/a>. In 1990, when Suboti\u0107 was two years old, his father went to Germany in search of work. In 1994, with the\u00a0Bosnian War<\/a>\u00a0raging, the rest of the family including five-year-old Neven, his sister and their mother joined their father in Germany, settling in\u00a0Sch\u00f6mberg<\/a>. Neven took up football at the age of seven with the local outfit TSV Schwarzenberg.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

In the late 1990s, the Suboti\u0107 family’s residence authorization in Germany expired and in order to avoid being deported back to Bosnia,[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0they opted to move to the United States in 1999. They settled in\u00a0Salt Lake City<\/a>, Utah, where Suboti\u0107’s father had a cousin.[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Suboti\u0107 played football with Sparta Gold and Impact Black youth clubs.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Within two years, the family was on the move again, this time to\u00a0Bradenton, Florida<\/a>, so that Suboti\u0107’s sister Natalija could pursue a tennis career at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy.[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The city also happens to be the\u00a0base<\/a>\u00a0for the\u00a0United States under-17 national team<\/a>. Suboti\u0107 trained on his own in G.T. Bray Park, where he got spotted by Keith Fulk, one of the American team’s assistant coaches who then informed the team’s head coach,\u00a0John Ellinger<\/a>, about Suboti\u0107. After arranging a tryout, they offered Suboti\u0107 a spot in the residency camp. At the time, he was not attached to any club sides, but eventually started playing with the\u00a0University of South Florida<\/a>\u00a0team.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

While playing with the under-17 team in the\u00a0Netherlands<\/a>, Suboti\u0107 was approached by player agent S<\/em>teve Kelly, who inquired about his career plans and offered a possibility of playing in Europe. After impressing at the tryout for\u00a01. FSV Mainz 05<\/a>, young Suboti\u0107 was on his way there, initially playing for the club’s youth and fourth-division teams (1. FSV Mainz 05 II).[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Suboti\u0107 holds a\u00a0German passport<\/a>, an\u00a0American passport<\/a>, a\u00a0Bosnian passport<\/a>, and a\u00a0Serbian passport<\/a>.[5]<\/a>\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

1. FSV Mainz 05<\/span>[<\/span>edit<\/a>]<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Suboti\u0107 made his professional debut for\u00a01. FSV Mainz 05<\/a>\u00a0in the last match of the\u00a02006\u201307 season<\/a>\u00a0against\u00a0Bayern Munich<\/a>, as his team was relegated from the\u00a0Bundesliga<\/a>. In the\u00a02. Bundesliga<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0following season<\/a>, he seized a starting role in what was the league’s best defense, conceding only 37 goals. The team finished in fourth place, missing the promotion back to Bundesliga by only two points.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

In the 2008 summer off-season, Mainz head coach\u00a0J\u00fcrgen Klopp<\/a>\u00a0got a job coaching\u00a0Borussia Dortmund<\/a>\u00a0and was instrumental in bringing Suboti\u0107 along with him.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

On 4 June 2008, it was announced that Suboti\u0107 had signed with\u00a0Borussia Dortmund<\/a>\u00a0on a five-year contract. He debuted for his new club in the unofficial\u00a0DFL-Supercup<\/a>\u00a0match against\u00a0Bayern Munich<\/a>, which Dortmund won 2\u20131. Suboti\u0107’s defensive displays quickly turned a lot of heads. In December 2008, he was named in the ideal XI team of the first part of the\u00a02008\u201309 Bundesliga<\/a>\u00a0season, alongside such defensive stars as\u00a0L\u00facio<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Philipp Lahm<\/a>.[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In addition to confident and effective defensive displays far beyond his years, Suboti\u0107 was also a factor on the offensive end, scoring six league goals throughout the season.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

In June 2009, he signed a new contract which lasts until summer 2014.[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In the\u00a02009\u201310 Bundesliga<\/a>\u00a0season, Suboti\u0107 was one of only four players in the entire league to play every minute of every league match.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

On 15 December 2010, Suboti\u0107 scored his first ever goal in the European competition, scoring a header off a corner at\u00a0Sevilla<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0Europa League<\/a>\u00a0to tie the score at 2\u20132. The match was a decider on which of the two teams would go on from the group stage, as Borussia needed to win away while Sevilla was fine even with a draw. It ended 2\u20132, however, and Borussia were eliminated.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

On 27 July 2013, Suboti\u0107 won the\u00a02013 DFL-Supercup<\/a>\u00a0with Dortmund 4\u20132 against rivals\u00a0Bayern Munich<\/a>.[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

On 27 May 2015 he signed a new contract until the end of the 2017\u201318.[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

On 1 April 2016, it was announced that Suboti\u0107 would miss the remainder of Dortmund’s season as he was suffering from\u00a0thrombosis<\/a>\u00a0in his arm.[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0On 26 June 2016, Suboti\u0107 confirmed that he planned to leave the club.[11]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0He moved temporarily on 26 January 2017 on loan to Bundesliga rivals\u00a01. FC K\u00f6ln<\/a>\u00a0until the end of the season.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

At the start of the 2017\u201318 season, he was brought back into the Dortmund team under the new manager\u00a0Peter Bosz<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

This guy is only 29, but seems to have been around forever, and seems to be just short of having made the big time, for whatever reason. At international level, he chose Serbia…<\/p>\n

Suboti\u0107 was eligible to represent the\u00a0United States<\/a>,\u00a0Serbia<\/a>,[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0or\u00a0Bosnia and Herzegovina<\/a>.[14]<\/a><\/sup>[15]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0During September 2008, when the issue of his national team eligibility first started getting wider coverage in the football media, playing for\u00a0Croatia<\/a>\u00a0or even\u00a0Germany<\/a>[16]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0were mentioned as possibilities as well. Both options, however, were soon revealed to be media concoctions more than anything else. Bosnia and Herzegovina fell out of the running early as Suboti\u0107 publicly rejected overtures by the country’s football officials and head coach\u00a0Miroslav Bla\u017eevi\u0107<\/a>.[17]<\/a><\/sup>[18]<\/a><\/sup><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

By late fall 2008, it became clear that only Serbia figured in his international choice. Citing sources close to Suboti\u0107’s family, many reports in the Serbian press appeared about his decision to play for Serbia already being made, but waiting for the right moment to state it publicly since he had until 10 December 2009 (his 21st birthday) to declare his choice. In mid-December 2008, Suboti\u0107 informed national team head coach\u00a0Radomir Anti\u0107<\/a>about his decision to represent Serbia.[6]<\/a><\/sup>[19]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Then in late December 2008, Suboti\u0107 notified the US Soccer Federation about his decision, the first official step in the process of changing national team attachment.[20]<\/a>\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

On 28 March 2009, Suboti\u0107 made his debut for the Serbian national team in the\u00a02010 World Cup qualifier<\/a>\u00a0against\u00a0Romania<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Constan\u0163a<\/a>\u00a0that Serbia won 2\u20133. Coming on as a 65th-minute substitute for striker\u00a0Marko Panteli\u0107<\/a>\u00a0with Serbia leading 1\u20133, Suboti\u0107 played the slightly altered central defensive role as Anti\u0107 looked to protect the lead for the remaining 30 minutes in the crucial qualifying match. Afterwards, head coach Anti\u0107 was very supportive of his new young defender, comparing him to\u00a0Fernando Hierro<\/a>.[21]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0After starting against\u00a0Sweden<\/a>\u00a0in a friendly, Suboti\u0107’s first competitive start took place against\u00a0Austria<\/a>\u00a0on 6 June just after the end of club season, partnering\u00a0Nemanja Vidi\u0107<\/a>\u00a0in central defence (if only for one half, since Vidi\u0107 got injured and replaced by\u00a0Antonio Rukavina<\/a>) \u2014 the contest in which Serbia displayed a very lethargic overall team effort and was lucky to win 1\u20130 after numerous defensive breakdowns. Four days later, on 10 June 2009, Suboti\u0107 scored his first goal for Serbia in a fairly straightforward 2\u20130 win over the\u00a0Faroe Islands<\/a>. For the next qualifying match, at the end of summer against\u00a0France<\/a>, Serbia’s chance to seal qualification by winning at home, Suboti\u0107 got benched and didn’t enter the contest at all, as Anti\u0107 preferred\u00a0Aleksandar Lukovi\u0107<\/a>\u00a0to partner Vidi\u0107 on this occasion. The same central defensive pairing started the next qualifier against Romania at home (another chance to automatically qualify with a win after failing to beat the French), while Suboti\u0107 got a chance to run out for the last 15 minutes as a sub for Vidi\u0107 with the score 2\u20130 for Serbia as it eventually clinched the World Cup spot with a 5\u20130 thrashing. In the last meaningless qualifier against\u00a0Lithuania<\/a>, Suboti\u0107 played the full 90 minutes in a free role on the wing as Anti\u0107 looked to experiment and try different setups without any fear of dropping points.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Though he came in with high praise and even higher hopes, Suboti\u0107’s initial performances for Serbia weren’t stellar. Following unconvincing defensive displays and fairly frequent mistakes, he had to deal with plenty of criticism in the Serbian press.[22]<\/a>\u00a0<\/sup><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

At the\u00a02010 FIFA World Cup<\/a>\u00a0in South Africa, Suboti\u0107 was left out of the starting lineup for the opening group stage match against\u00a0Ghana<\/a>, with Nemanja Vidi\u0107 and Aleksandar Lukovi\u0107 the preferred choices for central defensive spots by coach Anti\u0107. Suboti\u0107’s benching came as a result of his poor starting displays in the friendlies leading up to the World Cup against\u00a0New Zealand<\/a>,\u00a0Poland<\/a>, and\u00a0Cameroon<\/a>. During the second half of the Ghana match, however, Lukovi\u0107 received a red card and was sent off, forcing Anti\u0107 to bring Suboti\u0107 into the game for the remaining 14 minutes.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Due to Lukovi\u0107’s one-match suspension as a result of the red card, Suboti\u0107 started the next match in a must-win situation versus\u00a0Germany<\/a>, putting in a confident and effective performance against German forwards who despite mounting great pressure spells throughout the match ultimately failed to score as Serbia recorded a famous 1\u20130 win. Playing against the players he knew well from Bundesliga, Suboti\u0107 showed excellent positional play with several crucial reactions, including the clearance in front of\u00a0Mesut \u00d6zil<\/a>\u00a0to prevent the rebound following goalkeeper\u00a0Vladimir Stojkovi\u0107<\/a>‘s penalty save on\u00a0Lukas Podolski<\/a>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

For the group decider against\u00a0Australia<\/a>, Suboti\u0107 was back on the bench as Lukovi\u0107 returned from suspension.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Suboti\u0107 returned in the starting lineup for the\u00a0UEFA Euro 2012<\/a>\u00a0qualifiers<\/a>\u00a0that began under beleaguered head coach Anti\u0107, who was serving a four-match touchline ban as a result of the verbal altercation with the Uruguayan referee at the World Cup. The youngster played the full 90 minutes at Faroe Islands in the opener and also in the following match versus\u00a0Slovenia<\/a>. Suboti\u0107’s somewhat inconsistent form continued as he established a strong presence in central defence with Vidi\u0107, but also the duo’s hesitant reaction to\u00a0Milivoje Novakovi\u0107<\/a>‘s run off the ball led to Slovenian go-ahead goal. Following the Slovenian draw, Anti\u0107 was fired and\u00a0Pi\u017eon Petrovi\u0107<\/a>\u00a0took over the job. Suboti\u0107 got called up for the new coach’s debut match against\u00a0Estonia<\/a>, but was an unused sub as Serbia disastrously lost a competitive match at home for the first time in nine years. Petrovi\u0107 gave Suboti\u0107 a starting assignment for the next qualifier away at\u00a0Italy<\/a>\u00a0in October 2010, but the infamous contest in\u00a0Genoa<\/a>\u00a0got interrupted after six minutes due to rioting by the traveling Serbian hooligans, which resulted in an automatic 3\u20130 loss for Serbia.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

As the qualifying resumed in late March 2011, Suboti\u0107 got the start at home against\u00a0Northern Ireland<\/a>. Since center back Lukovi\u0107 announced his retirement from international football before this match, 22-year-old Suboti\u0107 essentially became an automatic first-team choice. However, partnering\u00a0Milan Bi\u0161evac<\/a>\u00a0in central defence (on instead of injured Vidi\u0107), Suboti\u0107 again had a shaky performance as the duo failed to properly deal with\u00a0Chris Brunt<\/a>‘s set piece cross that led to\u00a0Gareth McAuley<\/a>‘s headed goal. Furthermore, Suboti\u0107 picked up an injury during the match that ruled him out of the next qualifier four days later at Estonia.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

With\u00a0Sini\u0161a Mihajlovi\u0107<\/a>‘s May 2012 arrival to the head coaching post, Suboti\u0107 featured in a few preparation friendlies and even scored a goal in the loss to\u00a0Sweden<\/a>, but was omitted from the final friendly at home versus the\u00a0Republic of Ireland<\/a>\u00a0reportedly due to injury.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Once the 2014 World Cup qualifying cycle began in September 2012, Suboti\u0107 was benched for the opening match away at\u00a0Scotland<\/a>\u00a0as the duo of Bi\u0161evac and 19-year-old\u00a0Matija Nastasi\u0107<\/a>\u00a0got the nod in central defence. Three days later, at home versus\u00a0Wales<\/a>, the same situation repeated.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The following qualifier was a big test at home versus group favourites\u00a0Belgium<\/a>, and it still brought no change in Suboti\u0107’s status, as Mihajlovi\u0107 continued with Nastasi\u0107 and Bi\u0161evac as his preferred central defenders. Despite creating many opportunities, Serbia failed to convert them, losing the match 0\u20133 in the end. The heartbreaking loss brought Mihajlovi\u0107 media criticism, including that over his continual omission of Suboti\u0107. Four days later, however, playing\u00a0Macedonia<\/a>\u00a0away in\u00a0Skopje<\/a>\u00a0in a must-win situation, Mihajlovi\u0107 once again left Suboti\u0107 on the bench without a minute of action. In a match of poor quality, amid reports of discord within the squad stemming from the Belgium loss, Serbia conceded a late penalty and disastrously lost 0\u20131 thus almost losing a chance of getting one of the top two spots in the group with only four points from four match at the winter break.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout October 2012, Suboti\u0107 continued with stellar performances for Borussia, both in the\u00a0Champions League<\/a>\u00a0and in the\u00a0Bundesliga<\/a>, leading to more questions and criticism for Mihajlovi\u0107 in the Serbian press over continually leaving the player on the bench in national team matches.[23]<\/a><\/sup>[24]<\/a><\/sup>[25]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Asked about it explicitly in interviews, Mihajlovi\u0107 said, “Suboti\u0107 missed the final friendly versus Ireland because of injury. He was supposed to start against Scotland, but out of the five training sessions we held leading up to the match, he did very poorly at two of them. I decided to give Bi\u0161evac a chance in the match at\u00a0Hampden Park<\/a>\u00a0and he was excellent. Then, before the Belgium match, I said a had two question marks over the starting lineup and one of them was if I should start Suboti\u0107. Now Bi\u0161evac picked up a second yellow card of the qualifying, and Neven will start the next match in March versus\u00a0Croatia<\/a>, if he shows commitment in training, of course. It is now up to him to make that spot his again. Second part of the problem is that both Suboti\u0107 and Nastasi\u0107 aren’t very vocal during matches, Bi\u0161evac is the only one who talks and commands the back line. Neven is a very important player for us, and of course I’m counting on him, but these things happen \u2013 I had it happen to me as a player on occasion that a spot competitor on the squad makes the most of an opportunity coach gave him thus relegating me temporarily to the bench to wait for my next opportunity.”[26]<\/a><\/sup>[27]<\/a><\/sup><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Suboti\u0107 did not play in qualification matches for Euro 2016.
