Again.

I’ll keep it short and sweet today.

Well, short.

For the third time in a little over twelve months Celtic have been embarrassed in a European match. The seven goal mauling at the hands of Paris St, Germain is the latest in a series of nightmares for the club, following on from the five goal pasting in glasgow at their hands and the seven goals conceded in the Nou Camp last season.

We could argue, with a degree of credibility , that these sides are way ahead of us, but that is no excuse for rolling over and letting them do as they please.

As in the two previous drubbings, last night Celtic started fairly brightly -even taking the lead this time- but one misplaced pass from Scott Brown which led to their equaliser seemed to take Celtic’s confidence with it, and after that it was one way traffic.

These kind of drubbings should not happen to a professional side packed with international players.

Certainly not three times.

The manager has said he wants his defence to play the ball out, whereas perhaps it would be better to first teach them how to keep the ball out.

PSG don’t score seven against everyone. They probably won’t score seven again in this campaign.

And they shouldn’t have scored seven last night.

The Celtic defence, and the so called supporting midfield did not function again. and because it was PSG and all their money, that seems to be acceptable to a section of the support.

Yet somehow Celtic achieved two draws against the very wealthy Manchester City last season, simply by rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck in.

Last night was a shambles. Again.

The team were beaten as soon as they left the dressing room, despite the early goal from Dembele.

He’s the only player to score against PSG in this seasons campaign, and he came through their Academy, unlike any of the PSG players…not that that matters.

What matters is that nobody played well, largely because nobody had any belief in themselves or their colleagues.

This ratings picture from L’Equipe demonstrates exactly how poor Celtic were, and it is this we should concentrate on putting right, without excuses about how good PSG were.

They are only as good as we allowed them to be.

As for the defence, they got the basics wrong, and thats down to the coaching as much as the players.

Maybe it was a mistake to include Simunovic, who has been out if action for so long.

Last night had me pining for Efe Ambrose, who at least it could be said actually tried to defend.

And who was part of an organised back line along with Adam Matthews and Kelvin Wilson which kept out Barcelona five years ago.

Where are they now ?

To make a point about organisation, this is a snapshot of our defence in action.

Sorry, our defence inaction.

That is unacceptable. If we defend like that on Sunday, who will we blame ?

That’s right, the defenders and the coaches.

So why aren’t we blaming them for making us look like a second rate Sunday league side last night ?

When the draw for this group was made, we all stated we would be happy with qualification for the Europa League, which barring a 3-0 defeat to Anderlecht next month, will have been achieved.

However, Anderlecht will have gained a little bit of hope from watching Celtic collapse last night, and will be fully aware that our defenders will not hoof the ball away, and will therefore put them under pressure when they are in possession.

Even if Celtic do progress, other, more capable sides in the Europa will have spotted that weakness.

In fact Motherwell will have spotted it as well. They just need the confidence to act upon it.

Confidence.

Again, it seems like the players and management have accepted that they are not at the level of PSG and Bayern, and have pinned their hopes on beating Anderlecht to the Europa, showing a pragmatism off the pitch that is missing on it.

This may well succeed, and we’ll all be happy to be in the draw for the Europa league, but what we have done in reaching that phase is shown all our prospective opponents that the defence is weak and cannot effectively play the system it is being asked to, and no matter who we play, or where we play them, home or away, this Celtic side is vulnerable and will not do anything to alter that.

In short, a decent side will tear us apart.

We’re not learning anything at this level, from Rodgers to the coaches to the players, and last night should be the last time this is allowed to happen.

The art of management is to manage, to manage people and to manage situations in order to get the best possible result.

Sadly, so far , Rodgers isn’t doing that.

And whilst this ditty provided a little light relief post match..

You Retweeted

Natz‏ @natz_1888 11h11 hours ago

More

<s>@</s>Oldfirmfacts1

Oh Paris in the sun

PSG 7 Celtic 1

All my days I will sing in praise

Of the 8 minutes We did awright that day

…it kind of hurts…you see, we did do “awright”for a while, but seemed incapable of building on it.

In Europe over the years, a recurring theme has been to concede more than one goal in a very short period of time…

Thanks to moravcik67 on twitter for showing us these astonishing examples…

Shakhtar – Something which is ingrained in the players which needs to be sorted before we face anderlecht, or they will simply pressure our defenders and score a couple of quick goals…

Like everyone else does.

One suggestion is that there is no leader at the back. No Roy Aitken, Danny McGrain or Billy McNeill.

Yet whilst Kolo Toure leads the players in a song about him and his brother, and John Kennedy draws little pictures on his pad, two of those are still working for the club…

It’s time to start working on our shortfalls, which are being ruthlessly exposed by coaches who simply watch what we do and adapt their game to it. Rodgers, who has previously excelled in making the right changes during a game has shown a reluctance to do it in Europe.

Rodgers believes in his methods, and in what he is trying to achieve, and thats admirable.

But all achievers adapt while they are on the road to success, and its time for Rodgers to accept that this defensive system isn’t working.

Its also tome for him to accept that the side needs a mean streak in there somewhere. A little bit of steel that intimidates opponents and galvanises team mates.

Players such as those at PSG need to know they’ve been in a game, they need to have cuts , bruises and aches to remind them who they played.

Celtic have no physical aspect to their play, which probably explains why the video of Kenny miller being sent up in the air by Jozo Simunovic is getting so many plays.

That sort of no nonsense defending isn’t encouraged at Celtic, but its time it was.

To put it into perspective, Motherwell play a physical game, and have said they will do so again at Hampden.

That is worrying, and whilst Celtic have far superior players and are the far better team, there is a genuine belief at the Fir Park club they could win on Sunday.

Celtic don’t have that belief when they come up against a superior side, yet they will be wary of it in others.

Is it too much to ask that we could have a wee bit of that belief, a wee bit of that competitiveness and and a wee bit of heart when we come up against a wealthier and technically superior opponent ?

To make them a little wary of us ?

I’ll keep it short and sweet today.
