Celtic Diary Thursday September 22: Barton In Cat **** Storm

Which conjures up an image that once seen, would never be forgotten. But we’ll come to that later, in the section reserved for publicity seeking non entities.

Celtic sort of eased past Alloa last night into the League cup semi finals with a 2-0 victory, secured late on with goals from James Forrest and Moussa Dembele, and can now look forward to a tie against the winners of tonights game between aberdeen and St. Johnstone. Greenock Morton and “rangers” are the other semi finalists, and the balls are already warming up nicely in the oven to ensure the new Glasgow club is given every opportunity to make a second successive cup final.

The police need the overtime, the media need something to harp on about, and above all, the new club need the money.

Aberdeen will only get two days rest before their first ever meeting with “rangers ” this weekend, but they are not complaining. In fact, they’ve gone out of their way to welcome their visitors, and are planning a wonderful gesture to the memory of the original ibrox club, who were replaced by the current lot.

That game now looks, er , interesting, and presumably Level 5 are already sharpening their pencils to blame Aberdeen for any major incidents, or minor incidents they can turn into major incidents, before, during or after the game.

Alloa Athletic deserve a lot of credit for last nights disciplined if not adventurous performance, indeed one wondered during the game what would have been the outcome had Celtic shown such determination gaainst Barcelona, with midfielders who tackled, defenders who defended and a goalkeeper who tried to save shots.

Celtic struggled to convert chances again, not unexpectedly, hence the 2-0 prediction in yesterdays Diary, which is a return to the old problem from last season, but its fairly easy to see why its happening again. When in training , all they have to do is get the shot on target, regardless of which of the chuckle brothers is keeping goal, and there’s a better than fifty fifty chance it will end up in the net.

Real goalkeepers, such as those at Inverness and Alloa will try to stop this happening, often moving in the direction of the ball. This upsets our forwards, who then rush their shots meaning they can end up anywhere, and they often do.

I mention both goalkeepers because Craig Gordon seems to have gone to pieces as well, with one reckless and clumsy challenge last night that could have sen him red carded and a penalty awarded to the Wasps. And given the accuracy of the forward play, that could have been very costly indeed.

Gordon s lunge looked like this..prompting comparisons with the infamous assault by Harald Schumacher on Patrick Battiston when France and West Germany re enacted the First World War in the World cup.

Street fighter: was the Celtic keeper lucky?

When viewed from a different angle it does look quite serious

Victim Greig Spence spoke about the incident, and he seemed to suggest that gordon should have been sent off…

“He took me out quite aggressively but you don’t want to see people sent off. It was a bit away from the goal but it was a bad challenge.

“I’ve got a cut on my knee and if I had made that challenge or someone in the middle of the park had made it, it would have been a straight red.

“It’s like a different rule for goalkeepers – they get more protection.”

“At the time I asked the fourth official if it was a goalscoring oppor-tunity. He said that he didn’t think it was an obvious one and that was fine.

“Having now seen the pictures, I would say that, in terms of the foul itself and the type of foul it was, that it should have been a red card. If an outfield player had made that challenge he would have been sent off.

“It was a big moment because if he walks then they’re down to 10 men and that gives us a big chance.

“On nights like this we need those decisions going for us but we just had to get on with it.

“What I would say is that we had good fortune at times. Our keeper played well but equally we got breaks at important times in terms of the chances Celtic missed.”

BT sports commentator Chris Sutton agreed, and then went into a sulk when their in house refereeing expert Howard Webb disagreed.

Webb, of course , is a former English Premier league official, and many pundits claim that now he’s retired, Manchester United just aren’t the same team. He has officiated at the very top of the game, taking charge of the Spain -Netherlands World cup final in 2010. Where he gave a yellow card for a tackle by Nigel De Jong that raised a few eyebrows at the time…

Image result for de jong world cup final tackle

I’ll bet he’s got all the Bruce Lee dvds.

Celtic boss Brendan rodgers was pleased to get the game out of the way. Which reminds me, did anyone else notice he came out at half time and sat in the dug out ?

Image result for what was that all about

Rodgers said;

“We’ll play much better. I wasn’t pleased at half-time as we have to be more clinical.

“Overall we had 13 shots on target and probably another 13 that weren’t on target. So to score only two goals was disappointing. We must be more ruthless.

“The name of the game was about being patient. If you move the ball quickly enough you open up the sides of the field and the opportunities will come.

“The objective was to qualify. We always knew it was going to be tough when you look at how Alloa came through their group. They beat Inverness and Ross County so we knew they had resilience in their team.

“We knew they had great mentality and character to defend – and they proved that. We had a lot of chances in the first half and didn’t take them and as the game moves on you can become a bit edgy but we showed great patience.

“We scored two great goals and kept a clean sheet so we’re through and that was the main objective.”

We did achieve the first clean sheet since the Lincoln Red Imps return match, which seems so long ago. Wonder when the next one will be, and how many of us will still be around to see it…

Elsewhere, and an explanation of the story in todays title shows that Joey Barton didn’t suddenly become a publicity seeking whore, but in fact, has always done his talking on twitter, only to see it backfire, as this tweet from March 2013 shows…

Neymar is the Justin Bieber of football. Brilliant on the old You Tube. Cat piss in reality…

At the time, Neymar was starting to make a name for himself at Santos, while Barton was on loan at Marseille,  who were the only club willing to take a gamble on Barton after his release from prison, or wherever he’d been.

Football Insider takes up the story..

Barcelona newspaper Mundo Deportivo have taken the opportunity to send a dig the way of Barton. They say that when Barton was at Marseille he became famous, not for his football but for his comments on Neymar.

Now they point out he’s still not famous for his football, whilst Neymar of course is, and is only in the news because of the fall-out from the Celtic match, and for then allegedly betting on Barcelona to beat Rangers’ Glasgow rivals.

Barton is said to have bet on Celtic to lose by three goals or more, and the man to secure that bet, with the third strike, was none other than ‘cat piss’ Neymar.

With a shit load of books to sell, Barton is in the papers again today, begging for the chance to get revenge against Celtic. Thats unlikely, as he’ll still be at “rangers ” if the opportunity does arise, but then again, maybe Neymar will talk to the bosses at Barcelona and get him a gig there.

They probably need a cleaner, or something.

Its not the first time Bartons mouth has got him into trouble…

Transfer news now, though I use the word news in the loosest possible sense of the word, as its from the Sun.. via Football Insider again.

Celtic are interested in signing Argentinian left-back Leandro Grimi, according to a report.

The Scottish Sun claim the Scottish giants are keeping close tabs on the south American ahead of the January transfer window.

It is said that manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to recruit an experienced left-back as competition for teenager and established first-choice Kieran Tierney.

The Scottish Sun go on to report that the Hoops could land the 31-year-old Argentine for as little as £600,000.

Grimi is currently plying his trade in his native Argentina with Racing Club, after spells in Europe with both AC Milan and Sporting Lisbon.

Grimi has made over 230 league appearances during a career that has so far spanned 12 years.

Tierney has appeared in all of Celtic’s league games this season and is the undisputed No1 left-back at Parkhead after progressing through the ranks at the club.

The 19-year-old Scotland international has attracted interest from Premier League clubs including Liverpool but signed a new five-year contract during the summer.

Which either means that the club have decided to let Emilio Izaguirre go, or the sun journalist behind the story had forgotten he was there.

There might be a bit more in this story, though, as we have a history of signing Swedish defenders, who usually turn out alright.

Celtic and Aston Villa were just two of an astounding 17 sides to send scouts to watch Benfica defender Victor Lindelof on Sunday.

Clubs from 10 different countries were in attendance as the Portuguese giants saw off rivals Braga 3-1, as they continue their impressive form at the top of the Primeira Liga.

According to Portuguese outlet Sapo Desporto, the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Inter Milan were keeping a close eye on Sweden international Lindelof, 22.

Benfica’s number 14 has been in impressive form for Rui Vitoria’s side, after signing from Swedish outfit Vasteras SK and progressing through the ranks at Benfica B.

The 22-year-old, who has already won seven Sweden caps after making his debut in March 2016 against Turkey, has made one of two centre-back positions under Vitoria his own after impressing last season.

Lindelof, who can also slot in at right-back and has also played in holding midfielder, started all three games at Euro 2016 for Sweden before the were knocked out in the group stages.

Celtic and Villa will have to move quickly if they are keen on signing the Benfica star, with Spartak Moscow of Russia, Trabzonspor of Turkey, Bayer Leverkusen of Germany and Club Brugge of Belgium also watching Lindelof play.

It is expected that only a hefty offer will be accepted though, as Lindelof still has four years remaining on his Estadio da Luz deal.

If Mikael Lustig leaves, signing Lindelof would help the other new Swedish signing , Jordan Larsson, settle in. Well, we can hope, the young Larsson is starting to play more and more like his dad every time we hear about him.

Be worth a try, at least, to see if he wants to continue his development at the club where his father was at his happiest.

Standards at the Herald continue to decline, if thats possible, and it appears that the writers have been told to shine a positive light on anything concerning the “rangers “, anything at all.

And believe me, this is anything at all.

Beaten to the semi finals. Another crisis for Brendan.

You know whats next… ?

Away from football, and I do believe I’ve seen the girl of my dreams. With a name like this, how could she be anything else ?

How much different life would have been all those times when I stumbled home drunk after the football, and could have claimed I was merely calling out her name….

Ach, well, its not to be. You see, I’ve always been a little afraid of women, but my mother did point out that they were much more afraid of me.

Yesterdays caption competition featured those two fine examples of sportsmanship and fair play,

Ally McCoist and Dave King, who according to our winner, (me ) had King listeing to some advice from McCoist on facing the media.

“If they ask you a difficult question, ask them if you can go straight to the picture round. “

Today, and i’m sure you can do better than that, have a think about this one..

Greetings from Poortugal … Lindelof is waaaaay out of our price range mate … He has (as do most of the players from the big 3 over here) a minimum 30 million euro release clause !!
Can’t understand why the scouts are always at the Benfica games … Unless we are scouting NOT a Benfica player … But someone on the opposition and want to see what his BIG GAME mentality is like ???

If Alloa can do that to us, why couldn’t we do that to Barcelona?
And that goalie; Parr ,Parry? buy him ,soon.

Iljas Baker

Reply to  proddie

Alloa can do that to us because we’re not Barcelona and we can’t do it to Barcelona because they are Barcelona! Most of the shots weren’t that challenging for a goalie. They were weak or often straight at the goalie. Rogic in particular really needs to learn how to keep a ball down. Occasionally ballooning it is acceptable but doing it on a regular basis suggests a technical problem.
Hope Gordon starts against Man City and Gamboa doesn’t.

Everybody who kens fitba realizes that form for both the team and players both rise and dip.Form correlates to many things, but especially confidence aka defeats to (Barca) or victories (the Huns),its also the same with two halves in every game, one better or worse than the other.
So no worries there then,it was both interesting and informative to see Brendan alter his tactics during game time last night,it seemed back to the Blessed Martins system.
It was also great to see young Forrest score again, sticking twa fingers up to his critics,if the only critisism is his hair then fook me he is doing a guid job.
The thumb will be back mibbee even for Saturday,ya buety.

Interested to know the opinion in etim land , if we assume brown and rogic are definate picks in midfield who would you have in beside them in a first 11 ? . For me it would be armstrong as youwould have the battling qualities of brown , skill of rogic and pace and power from armstrong running box to box.

I would have Gamboa and Tierney pushed up in front of a back 3 then a front 3 of Forrest Griffiths and Sinclair on current form.
3-4-3
……….DE VRIES
.
…LUSTIG TOURE SVIATCHENKO
.
GAMBOA BROWN AJER TIERNEY
.
…FORREST GRIFFITHS SINCLAIR

I agree with CharlieSaiz, Armstrong has a very good blend of technical ability and footballing smarts. He can take the ball from any player in Scotland and is bordering on being 2 footed over a medium distance with his distribution. His engine and tenacity does not seem to quite matchup to MacGregor, but rotating these two players could reap huge benefits.

Mike,

I disagree Mike, I am willing to listen to arguments for a deeplying playmaker who can make those long accurate passes FORWARD to our attacking player, tearing open defenses, all the while squashing counter attacks before they begin then peppering the oopposition goalkeeper with blistering shots breaking the sound barrier, but I think we only need that one player in January. We have to leave a couple of spots to bring on the younger lads.

mike

Reply to  Uralius

Uralias, I think that Sumonovitc and Sviatcenko can play these passes,I dont believe that we require a midfielder to do that,we need a defensive mid. that can read the game in front of him and break up play and a forward mid. to create passes going forward.IMHO neither Armstrong who is to slow and weak or Biton can carry out this role effectively, same with McGregor who although he can pass is to weak in the tackle.

Uralius

We shall have to agree to disagree. While i agreed with winning the ball being a requirement, I don’t think midfielders should play a short ball backwards or sideways to go forward. They are a midfielder.

mike

Reply to  mike

I agree that is why i said a mid. to play forward passes,McGregor is better than Biton in going forward as is Armstrong, its the defensive part of the game that they cannot cope with. They lack that physical part of the game,Browns qualities are clearly diminishing and as Jimmybee said we missed out on the box to box mid.Patrick Bamford.

Doubling up out wide and overloading the FB means they opposition have to commit to more than one defender out wide.
It also allows either winger to cut inside without losing that out ball out wide.
Whilst retaining a solid defence of 3 at all times for any counter.
Less distance to travel in a game for both WB’s and Wingers.
Where incidentally we play most of our football.

Monti

Delbhoy,
I think we now have the players to play a 4-4-2 system rhat would be extremely effective.

At the moment i would play this starting 11

Gordon

Lustig
Simunovic
Sviatchenko
Tierney

Forrest
Brown
Rogic
Sinclair

Griffiths
Dembele

I believe this would work as Forrest and Sinclair are prepared to work back the way.
Dembele and Griffiths both have the ability and game knowledge to play as a two, or eitber of them could drop into the ‘ ten ‘ role making a 5 in midfield.

Roberts should be on the bench and can support sinclair and Forrest when they are substituted.

That would be my first choice m8

Delbhoy

Very nice looking team monti , would certainly do the business in scotland , not sure about europe but its an effective looking side , john you cant say armstrong is slow , in no way is he slow , did you watch the second half of the sevco match

Delbhoy sevco is not the game to judge players on. It’s what they have or have not done in Eurooe that matters.
Celtic squad is not geared up to play 4 1 3 2 or 442. Simply because we don’t have two dominating midfielders.
We played more offensively when we went to the back 3 last night, we saw out the game against Hapoel, when we did the same thing.
We have in my opinion the best chance to play our strongest 11 when we play with 3 at the back 2 wing backs 3 high pressing goal scoring midfielders and one up top.
To me this would be my strongest 11
De Vries
Eric Jose Toure
Rwb Lustig LWB Tierney.
Def midfielder Broony.
Attacking midfielders
Forrest Rogic Sinclair.
Griff
in reserve we have Gamboa for Lustig Izzy for Tierney
Boyata OConnell McCart for any of the three.
Midfield def Ajer or Bitton.
Attacking Roberts Christie McGregor Henderson
Up top Dembele Cifti.
I think this covers us better. We would see even more from Tierney who ijust keeps getting better. Well done Ronnie, for seeing how good this young lad was remember Izzy was a hard act to follow.

Agreed with some of that, but we need to bring in two new midfielders in the style of John Ogu and another.
Deilia only recognised Tierney because it was as plain as your plukes that he is an extremely talented player.

You have to play with 2 WB’s with 3 at the back otherwise it leaves you vulnerable to balls coming in from the wide areas.
But to operate the 3 both your RCB and your LCB need to be good enough to cover the WB when they get forward.
Hence why both Lustig and previously Mulgrew were perfect for it.
Jury still out on Sviatchenko for me on that left side.

Forrest and Sinclair wouldn’t be playing as wingers they would be coming from inside to support the full backs linking up 2v1 down the wings. Allows Rogic more space. Forrest and Sinclair would be even more effective as opposition full backs would be over ran.
But great debates HH

Jimmy,
I agree Sinclair does not play as a straight winger. One of the improvements this season is his abiliity to play across the forward line. Forrest has started to do the same. His goal came from that type of play last night.

I would just like to add my congratulations to Alloa who played a good game last night. In general, hard but fair. They were very well organised….a credit to their manager. Did he play full back?

Oh i see , yeah that would work , good to see every ones ideas , another option which would be hugely attacking is like i said to mike play rogic beside brown with liscence to break forwards and play roberts as a number 10 like messi used to do for barcelona , imagine griff sinclair forrest roberts and rogic coming at you , they wouldnt have struggled against alloa with that team!

It looks like our failings in the summer transfer window is coming back to haunt us,and I am talking domestically,a lot of tired looking players and nothing to freshen it up,midfield and of course the goalkeeping position are a worry, why has o Connell dropped out of the picture at centre half?

Corktim,

Said the same yesterday,i think, the problem with finding your best team is, that they tend to stick with the same players every game.Their is an awful lot of players that are either not up to first team games or are out injured.
Friendlies,(preseason).
The ICC Cup.
The C.L Qualifiers.
The C.L.
The Scottish League, all add up to a heck of a lot of games played already this season.
We need to bed in a couple of young players, like Henderson, Christie,Isseguer etc to spread the load.
In January we need to add two first team midfielders.

O’Connell did well but he is way down the pecking order in the first team for a game at central defence, although i do hear he is higher up the pecking order than Ambrose.
Ajer also did ok but he is one for the future, going by your thought process, Ambrose, O’ Connell and Ajer would be first picks?

Oh dear.

Rebus, he was a decent enough centre back m8.
Played in the same Falkirk side as Stokesy, and scored the pen against us to send us out the cup, evader sno missing after he had scored his.
Big Yogi was his manager. He went to Hartlepool or something down south but it went all wrong for him. Neale Cooper former dons man,was his manager there.
So plenty of good defensive play learned and taken on board by him.

Not Celtic related but thought I would share this with you.
I’m a 17 year old student from Jobstown studying Arts. I can’t speak to you today or be identified because of the seriousness of the charges against me in court tomorrow.
Since I was 14, I’ve been involved in trying to make improvements in my community. I’ve been involved in Young Social Innovators, residents associations and I received the Gaisce silver medal for my community work.

I attended the protest against Joan Burton in Jobstown two years ago to express my opposition to water charges and austerity. Isn’t it significant that where the protest took place was outside a food bank. This is what Joan Burton’s Labour Party promises did to Jobstown and the rest of the country.

This was a protest that hundreds of people attended, but only 23 people were charged. One of them is in the Children’s Court on Monday – which is me. The trials of the others start next April. The total cost to the public will be millions of euros to pursue these prosecutions.

I’m charged with false imprisonment. This time next week I could be sentenced to prison. This would have a major impact on my future, including my career choices – with a serious criminal conviction for the rest of my life. How many other 17 year olds do you know who are facing prison for standing up for their rights?

Over the past year, this has had a major impact on my studies. It’s impacted on my Leaving Cert. All because I expressed my political beliefs at a peaceful protest!

A lot of people have said to me, “it’s not going to happen.” In my mind, it’s not going to happen, means it’s not going to happen at all. But it is happening now. The dawn raids happened, the arrests happened, the summons happened, the courts happened and now the trial is happening. It is happening! Now people are still telling us that “you won’t go to prison”. Well isn’t that what they said about me not getting arrested.

I don’t believe this is just about me. It’s a much broader issue. It’s about the right to stand up for your beliefs. If you don’t have the right to protest, what other rights will be taken away?

I need your support to ensure that an injustice isn’t done to me and all of us next week. I want to appeal to everybody here today to do your utmost to come to the protest on Monday at 10am outside the Children’s Court at Smithfield. I also want to appeal to people to go online now to the Jobstown Not Guilty facebook page and donate to the bail fund because we need €2,000 for next Wednesday.

I’d like to thank everybody for their ongoing support and hope to see you on Monday morning.

I want to finish with the words of Martin Luther King Jr., “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Good luck to this young person and all who have been prosecuted on such disgraceful charges.

The similarities mean that if all else fails he could just copy MON tactics. None of them are exactly like these guys, but close enough to play the tactic.

A statistic that would really interest me is of the total passes completed, how many are to feet and how many are to space for a player to run into.

The match winning play was one of the few occasions that the pass was into space. The crossfield pass from Christie was a beaut. Into space in front of Forrest. Absolutely stunning pass made under difficult conditions as he attempted to control a pass that he received.

This is not to detract from Forrest’s part in working the goal….also tremendous play.

Give us more of this.

Rebus, i would bet that of all passes something like 75% would be to feet, one of the recognizable features of Celtic play that is lacking is that run into space to create either an unselfish diversion or to create an opening for the pass.
Fitbas about the result of course, its lamentable that the younger players fail to get the game time that they deserve, the Associations could rectify that by demanding that perhaps a min. of two young players are played per team.
Good luck with that Mike.

Our biggest failing under Lenny was the constant square ball in midfield.
It slowed play down dramatically as a result.
I always prefer to see the pass a yard or so ahead of the intended target (dependent on the receivers pace) which allows them to not break stride and continue moving at the same pace giving the marker or defender less chance of reacting.
Basic stuff that for whatever reason some of our players seem unwilling or unable to grasp.

If you bypass Rob MacPain, at ~16:30 you can get back to a time when Efe wiznae ostracized.

Charlie saiz,
You say you like the ball to be played a yard or so ahead of it’s recipient? That is the correct ball to play when releasing wide players in particular, when giving them the edge in racing away from an opponent.
However, this pass cannot be executed like this if you are being closed down quickly or are already being tightly marked.

I was a central midfielder for 20 years, i know better than you.
You say you were a ‘ striker ‘ cough, did you have a particular style of play?
For example did you have the pace of a Jamie Vardy with the ability to run in behind a defence, or the static efforts of a Tony Cascarino?

Charlie saiz,
” Failing under Lenny “?
Why go as far back as Neil Lennon?
There are plenty examples of ” failing ” during the Norwegians two years, maybe you should use Deila as an example.

Karma time. The ghosts of Hampden have to be laid to rest in this match. Don’t let us down this time. Forget the 5-1 and get ready.

Aye Jimmy, but the biggest ghost at Hampden that day will be the ghost of a club.

A lot of the support forget that the players require recovery time in between C.L.matches,one of the reasons IMO that we have in spite of the mibs failed to collect more silverware.
Not saying that we will not beat thems but it has to be put into the mix.
Like i said above with Corktim,Managers tend to stick with the same players for every competition, despite the size of the first team squad, like it or not,it can be a factor.

Brendans irked at the SMSM coverage of TIC. games, the level of scrutiny that both BT Sport and SKY SPORT put into Refs. decisions, with Mutton and Craigend repeatedly running over and over pictorial replays of so called controversial incidents.
Sky fanny pundits Walker crisps and rule book McCann can only offer an opinion thats why they receive big pay cheques Brendan, cos they are to pish at Management (Fannies).
Not to mention the Hun National Broadcaster,i said not to mention them ya twat and the press HA.HA.HA. press?chip pokes only.
