Celtic Diary Monday September 26: Stark Warning To Be Taken Seriously

Ahead of the clash on Wednesday with Manchester City, the former club of the people now rich mans plaything, there was a stark warning from Leon Britton…

( No, I don’t know either)

Warning for Celtic as Leon Britton says Manchester City

are the best team he’s ever faced.

Well, thats that then. We might as well chuck it.

Britton, who plays for Swansea, is a midfielder who has worked under Brendan Rodgers, and somehow, the Daily Record , has got an exclusive where Britton says he is going to text his former boss to point out just how good Manchester City are.

Well, Rodgers might not have noticed.

“In terms of the passing, I don’t think I’ve played against a team in the Premier Leaguewho keep the ball as well they do with the rotation and the movement.

“Look at the keeper. Hes an extra player. He drops his shoulder and beats a man.

Well, bugger I down dead. Our keeper just drops the ball. When he gets anywhere near it, that is.

You think you have them pressed in and there was one instance in the first-half when we did it and he just clipped a ball over all of our heads to Kevin De Bruyne on the halfway line and he was the free man.

“Things like that make it so tough for any team that faces them.

“They are the best I have faced in the Premier League.

“You know they will take risks because that is the nature of the way they play, they want to pass it.

When you consider that the EPL contains teams such as Stoke, Hull, Watford and Bournemouth its clear Manchester City are a force to be reckoned with.

“So you try and nick it, but when they get the other side of you, the job is chase back 50 or 60 yards.

“You either press and try to take it off them or you drop deep and park the bus, as they say.

“We played them twice in four days and they made 10 changes for the second game, going back to the first 11 if you like.

“I thought first-half we did okay and frustrated them pretty well, but it’s very difficult to stop them.”

Bastards. you get the ball and then they try to get it back off you. Who’d have thought it ?

Britton obviously didn;t enjoy his recent tussles with Manchester City, but it makes me wonder how the Record managed to find him at such short notice.

Perhaps he’s a close friend of the Celtic manager..

“I text Brendan now and again. When he got the job at Celtic, I texted him and he did the same when I played my 500th game for Swansea.

“It’s not regular contact, but if they do well, I’ll drop a text.

“I might send him one on Monday saying Good Luck. He might need it.”

Ach, who cares.

Celtic haven’t done too badly against English sides in the past, and there are similarities between the all conquering Manchester City of this season, and the all conquering Leeds United of another era. And we all know what happened there.

In fact, had there been no more England-Scotland European ties after Shunsuke Nakamura secured a 1-0 win over Manchester United, the Scots would have been 11-9 ahead in wins. The balance has become  slightly skewed since due to the influx of Sky money to the English league, with no Scots side recording even a win since.

Thats about to change…

If Celtic make the mistake of reading how much the Manchester City team cost, which is, of course, how teams apear to be judged these days, then no words of encouragement will help. Under no cirumstances should Celtic show them as much respect as they showed Barcelona. From the off, the hoops need to “Get Intae Them. ” This should make a mockery of the so called gulf between the two sides due to their relative costs.

Whilst its obvious that better players go for more money, the inflated prices paid by City for some of their players is ludicrous, and largely due to the fact that other clubs have noticed they are fairly footloose with their chequebook.

What is in store for them when their owners find a new toy to play with is unclear, and whether or not they are strictly adhering to the rules of financial fair play is another matter, but the one thing we have that they do not is a team spirit.

No egos, no one is here for the money.

And when the crowd gets behind them on Wednesday, those Celtic players will feel worth every bit as much as their opponents are supposed to be. Value as a football player is measured by the supporters, not by the guy writing their wage cheque.

The game on Wednesday is important if Celtic want to restore their name on the continent, and important for our chances of European football after Christmas. The key will be in passion, both on the pitch and off it.

City boss Pep Guardiola, who lets face it isn’t there because he grew up as a Manchester City fan, began the war of words…

“We are still far away from where we want to be, We are here to get better. You always have to keep going. It never ends in football.”

By full time on Wednesday, lets hope he wants to be as far away from Celtic Park as he possibly can be.

Back home, and Celtics win over Kilmarnock has pushed the side so far ahead at the top of the league that the title is all but won already. With 23 goals in the six games so far, there is no reason why the players can;t go on and add to the records already set, such as Demebeles first hat trick by a Celt in nearly forty years against any of the teams playing out of Ibrox, and Scott Sinclairs own six in a row.

Just over half way through the first round of matches, the league table has taken on the shape we pretty much expected it to, though the season has been more entertaining than predictable.

Great article again Ralph, hope you are feeling a bit better. Note the entitlement reappeared after the Dons game, the SMSM spouting drivel, headlines about scratched buses and EBT Souness demanding more cash for the tribute act.
Hopefully Gordon is now Number 1 as the goal Dorus list on Saturday was q lack of concentration.
The team othe wise played well against a team that wanted to defend, great score, could have been more

Grandsons Christening on Saturday so gave the tickets away. Doh ! Have to be careful with the ‘get wired in’ approach. They will fall down and take free kicks all night and may end in a red for us. MOTD showed that they can be open at the back but of course are rapid mid to front. I think if we work like feck and I mean work, then sub the three most tired, no matter who, we could get a draw here. De Bruyne appears out at this stage so that’s a bonus straight off.

We are a long way off competing against all that money can buy.
It is a step too far I’m afraid and talk of a victory is still the hangovers from the weekend.
I expect us to lose, no disgrace in that. How we play is much more important.
Time for players who continually let us down in Europe to step up to the plate.
Too many times players hide, they play stupid passes and give the ball away needlessly.
We have to be braver, give us that we have a chance. But a victory, well that would be unbelievable.

Cheers Charlie,
We keep being out the game before we get a chance to be in it. If you know what I mean. Ball retention is key in Europe. We get away with sloppy play in the league, but in Europe it finds you out.
We must be brave to keep hold of it, to see the pass, to play it back,no matter what the support want. Up and at them yes,but with control. When we have the ball guard it with your life. Protect it,use it, and make it work for you.

We seem to be putting a lot of pressure onto our own keepers.
They might just be feeling it, like Forrest did last season.
Gordon and De Vries need support not cheap digs.
Let’s support whoever it us between the sticks, and stop being arch enemy numer 1 to our own. It’s bad enough the media doing it, but when you see the fans react like they are doing then the keepers are losing confidence.
He played a pass out on Saturday, it reached its target, but the fans got jumpy, it was nearly intercepted they said, Ffs. He then asked them to calm down, but of course they won’t listen.
They have made their mind up,that he will be the boo boy target this season. Any mistake, any wonder goal against him, then he should be out the door. Poor stuff. Let the media do all that crap, and let us support all the players who take the field.

Jimmy,

How are you doing? You and yours are all well, I hope?

I am undecided about the Killie goal. I’ve watched it several times and cannot decide whether it was a fluke shot that could not be anticipated or a keeper error. Certainly if he had been nearer his goal line he would probably have got it, but every event is preceded by events that lead to the consequence. Similarly, should he have timed his jump better? Who knows. It reminds me of a goal I let in from a corner as I was the fb on the line. I mistimed my jump and the ball saled over my head into the net…..the only time my father came to see me play!

However, I am sure that both keepers are under pressure right now and that is not good for them. DDV needs a few games free from error to build his confidence. The MC game is probably not the one for him since any errorwill be punished and his confidence could be shattered. While Gordon’s confidence is also low, he is more used to the pressure that comes on a. Eltoc goalie. I’d play him versus MC. Both keepers need a “Foster” moment when he saved the penalty vs Hearts, I think. He went on from there.

I agree, tho, with your key point that the criticism of both keepers is counter productive. Unfortunately, I also agree with your point re expectations vs MC. However, I hope the players do not…..we are at home, we need to go for it. Goal difference is already going to operate against us, so we need a point or three to put pressure on the Germans. Finishing third in this group would be a significant achievement and would boost our coefft.

The wee grandson is on the mend thankfully. Hope all is well with your good lady.
Too many times in Eurooe we are out the tie before we get into it. errors on our part gifting goals away. We get punished, like we punish teams in our league for the same thing.
You are correct about Fraser ,and it was the making off him as a Celtic player the penalty save was the turning point.
Gordon has to play I agree, he is a brilliant shot stopper, and even though he has his faults,he has done a great job in replacing a hard act to follow.
Let’s hope it’s one of those special nights, where our keeper plays with the spirit of Johnny Thompson by his side, and the players with the heart of Lisbon Lions.

Was yesterday’s match at Abetdeen official recognition that Second Rangers are that; evidence no last minute penalty and

Hope Gordon is in goal against Man City but don’t like to bad mouth a Celtic player. I remember when a lot of my mates turned against Master James and at first I defended him and then gradually got sucked in, that happened in the diary as well and look at him now. One of the criticisms was he couldn’t cross properly he has found the perfect solution to that he just scored instead

Great Diary today again Ralph. You can feel the anticipation for Wednesday’s match in the posts that are being made. I watched the “Copa America” matches and while Kun Aguero is an excellent striker he didn’t shine in that competition and did he-haw against the wee Chile-willies in the final, even when they were down to 10 men. Argentina had Messi playing too but they still didn’t win. So what if the EPL is daft enough to pay exorbitant sums for players that flatter to deceive..it’s 11 against 11 on the night and if you want to win bad enough you will win.
Our players got gubbed 7-0 by Barca and got a dressing down from the manager…they can take how all that felt and channel it into a “let’s show them” performance backed by 60,000 Celtic fans turning the air electric.
Souness is already being asked his opinion about the match in the media (WTF has it to do with him?..oh, that’s right, the media have to have some “rangers” connection with big European matches) and typically gives us next to no chance and bemoans the low level of Scottish football..which brings me nicely to the night we played Barca in 2012 and the panel consisting of Souness, Gary Lineker and two others said that Barca would win 2-0 or 3-0..that Celtic wouldn’t even score. And these panelists are paid a small fortune for their “expert” (unbiased ?) opinions.
The attitude on Wednesday by the players to all the media should be “We didnae come here to praise Man Shitty, we came to bury them.” (copyright Marc Antony).

Both keepers have their weaknesses but DDV has not played in front of 60,000 Celtic supporters and I don’t think he should on Wednesday. I think Gordon will be able to handle the game better.

Psychology will play a big part in this game. They have to be confident that they can dispossess MC and mount an attack of their own. Sinclair and Forrest can do a job and with luck so can Dembele. But they really have to prevent a goal in the first 30 minutes.

I’d have Toure instead of Erik but not sure about Rogic. He has good qualities but the ball gets stuck between his feet sometimes and he loses possession. He is incredibly wasteful in front of goal. I think Griff will be a late substitute and McGregor too.
