Lessons From Catalonia

Charlie Saiz ponders the European campaign, and wonders if its always going to be this way…

We should really have known better after a great result in the League ( 5-1 v “rangers ” )that Barcelona  going to be an impossible mountain to climb. The step up in quality proved too much
To be fair it has been a fairly tremendous start to the season barring the  bad results in the Champions League qualifiers in Gibraltar and then Israel.
Domestically we have asserted some authority in the League, but  in Europe have we actually shown any shown signs of progression after last season ?
Should we be too  surprised at the relative ease Barca tore us apart last week ?
After all Lincoln Red Imps and Hapoel managed to do so so no less than 5 times between them. Hapoel, granted,  then going on to beat Inter Milan, and just yesterday Inter beat Juventus…
Brendan Rodgers has inherited a side that at best were mediocre Europa League level as did Ronny Deila previous to him. He has bought well in general, but the side are still short of Champions League level.

Fact is in Neil Lennons final year the side he built was stripped of it’s assets and never really replaced with similar quality.

Deila , too , had that problem, and Rodgers has been handed the task of sorting it out.
We were at best Europa League level, sometimes even below that.
I believe at Celtic and other clubs in our position ( Ajax, Porto, etc ) that European success is cyclic?
A couple of  good seasons followed by three or four of mediocrity, then rinse and repeat.
Transfers, retirements and injuries as well as Management changes which seem to be far more regular now at Celtic have impacted negatively more than positively, meaning that a settled build cannot be undertaken to maintain a high level of quality, neccessary for regular champions League participation.

Brendan has come in and had an immediate impact on the players, more so than Deila who tried to alter a great many things in a short space of time.

His time ran out.
With these things already in place Brendan has been able to alter the approach slightly more and bring in a better standard of player than Deila could.
However even that standard of player outwith Toure has never experienced what they experienced tonight.
Barca are at the very top of the game and with all the best will in the world the likes of Toure Sinclair,Gamboa and Dembele simply aren’t in that class.
It’s going to take a season at this level  for them to find their feet.  Toure may have  been there before but he is at the tail end of his career and is surely there to guide the youngsters rather than have an eefect himself.
A yard slower against Messi ,Neymar and Suarez might as well be 10 these guys are playing X Box football after all not the SPFL kickball we, and the players, are used to.
So whilst I am down beat and gutted at the scoreline tonight deep down I had a feeling it could well be on the cards. And i probably wasn;t the only one.
For me it all depended what Barca was going to turn up tonight regardless of what Celtic did.
As it turned out, they showed they are a different class playing on a much higher level of technical ability which proved too much for our players.
This season was about qualifying, about  getting the finances in place so that Brendan and the board can bring in the quality needed to operate at this level. Whether they will or won;t remains to be seen.
Sure we all hope the side put up a fight and give it their best against both Barca and City whilst perhaps getting a result or two against the Germans bu the reality is we dropped into one of the toughest Groups in the draw. but then again, being in pot four, there was never going to be an easy group.
We need to be patient, as the process has become more  cyclic and this season is about evaluating, building and strengthening to hopefully build a side who won’t get pumped by the very best but will play above themselves and perhaps even humble the mighty like in 2012.
The Barcelona game has shown there is still a long, long way to go.
I have faith Rodgers will improve this side enough to able to reach that level again. In reality, though, it was always unlikely it would be this season, or even next time.

He needs time and we need to be patient this is by no means an easy task.
My hope for the season before a ball was kicked was a good extended showing in the Europa after hopefully qualifying for the Champions League proper.
As it was when Deila took over.
He failed in that respect but Brendan has managed to complete the first stage.

The players need to learn at this level, they need to learn very quickly, and if they do, there;s a slight chance that the hoops will finish third, and perhaps even use their new found experience and knowledge to have a real crack at the Europa League, but first they need to believe that they belong at this level, as the Barcelona game didn’t show they have any belief in themselves in the rarified UCL atmosphere.

The group is shaping up to be a battle for third between Celtic and Borussia Moenchengladbach, which means each and every point of the remiaing fifteen available must be fought for with a passion not so far shown by the current side, starting at home to Manchester City, who on paper could do the same damage to Celtic as Barcelona.

Thankfully, though, games are not played on paper.

If our European campaigns are indeed going to continue on a pattern of two good, three bad, then perhaps we might as well just try to enjoy this one.

Well fifty years after the most successful team in the world, ever, and we will be celebrating at least The SPL and hopefully the cups.

Best we can hope for, I think, is third and some thrills at Paradise in the Champions League then a decent run in the Europa. Another Seville please? Players are still settling in and Bren is still tinkering. Maybe De Butter-fingers will turn in some performances yet.

Anybody notice, 6 goals in the ‘rangers’ game and 7 against our old foes in catalonia! Jock having some fun? Hail!

Charlie Saiz. Good article. Well done. Can’t find any fault with it. Brendan needs some time to get his team to gel. He’ll make some mistakes along the way.

Cheers -you should have seen the original draft 😉
I am fairly confident he can and will sort us out though to what level remains to be seen bud?
Recruitment in the next window will be key for next season I think.
Borussia are no mugs btw we could well end up with 3 points and bottm if we aren’t a bit more savvy at the back v them.

Forget third place,we aren’t good enough simple as that.
Man City are playing brilliant football, under a great manager.
They needed Kompany last season, this season he hasn’t been missed. A joy to watch and Pep has them playing like Barca.
The German team might be our only chance of a point or two.
But our midfield is ill equipped to go toe to toe with the big guns.
So enjoy watching Barca and Man City, even though it might be painful for us to watch.
It is what it is.
Hail Hail

If we can do Borussia at home and get a point out there 3rd is a possibility Jim.
A big ask given our form in Europe but as we proved at home to Hapoel not beyond us.
We are a mediocre Europa League level at the moment I think with scope for improvement.

Both City and Barca are capable of battering ANY side on their day.

Not exactly helpful comments Monti. It’s getting to be a habit you might want to rethink. Personally I’d rather have statistics than invective any day.

Well Charlie Saiz, I was looking forward to a tactical analysis of what went wrong. Instead all i got was a list of blah, blah excuses much like those i spouted for the first 6 months of Ronnie Deila’s second season in charge. Every manager in Scotland (bar magic hat) could have told Brendan Rodgers how to line up against Barca. They line up against Celtic like that every time they play us. Play 5 in midfield with defensive wide men, 2 defensively minded, central midfielders with roaming midfielder. Play 4 at the back. Crumple into our own half, play very narrow and hope to prevent service from wide areas. Not the Celtic way, but even Scotland have given Germany and Poland a run for their money in recent years with that tactic. Biggest problem we have is with Scottish football in general, we never have to defend and our players don’t know how. They got between our wing-backs and center-backs and were given too much space in behind. Anyways at leadt you wrote something, which is more than can be said for me this season.

I thought he got the setup right Uralius.
Which why I predicted he would do what he did.
Barca were and are simply too good for us at this moment in time.
The measure of exactly how good will become apparent when Man City and Borussia try defend against and contain those 3?

That’s my point they will stop service and not try and stop €300k of sublime forwards. They will do a San Marino and put 10 dustbins in the box (play narrow) . Mönchengladbach are Bayern München’s bogey team Pep hated playing them. Dortmund get beaten by them too. They will not so easily be swept aside in the following games and they will put up quite the fight. Did you hear that the Mönchengladbach players raised money for their fans after the game was canceled?

I watch the Bundesliga on BT Uralius they are a decent side and will be no push over.
They were comprehensively beaten by City though and I suspect will be beaten by at least the same by Barca.
The Barca City games will be interesting.

You can’t treat that defeat anything like normal. The game was postponed and many of their travelling support went home on busses. Dodgy circumstances.

Man City created 23 efforts on goal 11 of which were on target.
Barca created 15 efforts at goals against us with 10 on target.
We were battered.
Borussia were lucky it was only 4.

Incidentally we created as many chances v Barca that Borussia managed against City.
Little has been made of this due to the final result.
We both suffered bad defeats at the hands of two very good sides.

How many free kicks about 30 yards out were awarded to either side on the night and how many inches between corner flag to food hall in the main stand?

We got destroyed because we turned up rather than actually trying to compete. I’m not a fan of this ‘Barca-worship’, aye they are an amazing football team but if you play them thinking that you can’t get a result then you will not get a result. A defeatist attitude has teams beat before a ball is kicked, our mentality should be striving to win not to stand back and admire them.

I disagree with you when you say the CL should be considered a learning curve, I believe you can learn and get results.

Once again, I disagree with you calling Lennon’s CL teams “mediocre Europa League level” after being “stripped of it’s assets and never really replaced with similar quality” (Did Lennon run over you dog? Did Deila give it the kiss of life?). Lennon made the CL and got a few good results having players like Wilson, Efe, Rogne, Mouyokolo, Boerrigter, Pukki, Miku and Lassad. Maybe now you’re seeing Brendan struggle?

Cut off the end, should say: Maybe now you’re seeing Brendan struggle you’ll give Lennon the credit he deserves?
