Celtic Diary Monday September 19: And They Moan About The Referee ?

Celtics perfect start to the league campaign ended with a 2-2 draw in Inverness. Hardly surprising, as manager Brendan Rodgers elected to tinker with the defence again, but  crucially left Dorus De Vries between the sticks, which is where he stayed throughout the game, moving only when the referee blew for half time.

In a re run of last season, the manager is struggling to find his best back line, and with Lustig shunted to the middle to accomodate that Costa Rican bloke, it was hardly a shock when Billy King ghosted down the right before cracking a shot past a desparing De Vries, who had come off his line the way he should have done for Caleys second goal, which was a header that he actually dived backwards to get, which , of course, never works due to the goal line being right behind the keeper.

At the other end, the players took it in turns to fire shots more or less stright at the Caley keeper, who will never have an easier game and come out of it looking like a cross between Lev Yashin and Gordon Banks, at least until they come to Glasgow.

Have we seen this film before, only with different actors ?

Certainly seems that way, and the guy playing Ian Andrews has got the part perfected.

It would be churlish of me to blame the draw entirely on Dorus de Vries, who with each game is looking more and more like a bargain basement second level English goalkeeper who has come up north to play out the  last few months of his career, a policy which has yet to bear fruit for any club who adopts it, and although de Vries was Nottingham Forests player of the year last season, its worth remembering that Joey Barton, at the time of writing, still with “rangers ” , was also the player of the year at his club, Burnley, though they wouldn’t offer him a two year deal….

It’s not just down to the keeper, but having just gone through months of trying to find a settled back line for Craig Gordon, it seems rather silly to now do the same thing for De Vries, who probably needs a little more help keeping the ball out of the net than the former Hearts man. Gordon has had his duff games, but he can also be relied on to make match winning saves, and frankly, the idea of going up against free scoring in form Manchester city with De Vries in goal is loosening my bowels.

In fact, I’m not that confident he’ll do a job against Alloa on Wednesday, as his weaknesses include shots and headers anywhere near him.

And don’t forget…

As for the right back, he may need a bit of time before he’s ready for the first team, say around three or four years, and again, with a rampant Manchester City on the horizon, its probably not a good idea to keep him in the team.

Erik Sviatchenko looked a little sluggish yesterday, perhaps tired, perhaps missing hs mentor Kolo Toure, the single success thus far of the retirement home policy, but then again, theres a long way to go, and its unlikely he’ll last the season.

Sviatchenko did look a little more relaxed when Jozo Simunovic entered the fray, and Mikael Lustig returned to right back, but he seemed on eggshells for most of the game, having escaped a sending off for allowing an Inverness forward to fall over in front of him.

At least, thats how i saw it, whilst everyone else reckoned it was a penalty, it appeared to me that Draper, the Caley player, ran across Sviatchenko, making a collision inevitable, and while Chris Sutton of BT Sports was adamant it was a penalty, it should be noted that Sutton was quite good at falling over in front of defenders and winning a free kick.

After the game, controversy raged as Richie Foran, the Caley boss, commented on the “penalty ” decision.

Image result for Meekings handball

“Going by the reaction of the Celtic players we got away with a penalty and a sending off and it was probably the turning point in the game.

Ah, wait, wrong incident. That was John Hughes speaking as well, not Foran.

Foran said;

“It was outside the box, but it was a clear free-kick which leads to a clear sending off.

Clearly.

“You need brave referees at times like that. Ross pushed the ball in front of their player, got his body in the way and he has been wiped out. It was a clear for anyone to see.

“I was very disappointed not to get that decision. It changed the whole outlook of the game without a doubt. If they go to 10 men it gives us a big boost. It was quite obvious for the whole stadium to see. The only one who didn’t think it was a free-kick was the referee unfortunately.

“I had a chat with the referree. He didn’t think Ross had control of the ball. Obviously, we have had the luxury of seeing it back on TV but e has made the wrong decision.

I’ve seen it a couple of times as well, it wasn’t a foul. Not as far as I can see,

Still, even if it was…

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers was fairly honest in his view of the game…

“We deserved the three points. Give credit to Inverness they kept going, they kept fighting, even though we could have scored more goals in the second half.

“We were disappointed to concede from the corner. But they tell me that notoriously it’s a tough place to come and our general performance, especially in the second half, was better.

“Their keeper made some great saves, a couple of them looked like they were certs to go in. Obviously when the game is at 2-1 and no matter how dominant you are you need that third goal to get any sort of comfort in the game so when we didn’t get it we were leaving ourselves open a little bit to the equalising goal.

“But we have to defend it better. I still feel there is a lot of work to do on the standard of our game, both offensively and defensively. It’s a team formed over the course of the summer and there are still changes because of the level of the games we’ve been playing and the football we are trying to play.”

He’s going to persevere with that keeper, isn’t he ?

On a lighter note, Scott Sinclair scored again, earning him comparisons with the late great Jimmy McGrory as he was the last player to score in the opening five league games…Sinclair played this down post match, instead reflecting on his own performance;

‘Somebody told me after the game, It’s a good achievement but, at the same time, you want to be coming off the field having scored the goals and won the game.

‘Personally, I haven’t really looked into it. I just go into every game looking to create and score goals. The main thing is getting three points.

‘When I look back, I scored 27 goals for Swansea City but that was going back five years ago — a long time ago.

‘It’s great for myself getting into that run of consistency and my confidence is growing with each game. When you add them both together, you can say I’m enjoying my football.

‘I said when I first came here I wanted to both score goals and provide. If I’m doing one or the other, then I’m doing my job. It’s just basically to help the team.’

I suppose its a good thing that these old records are being challenged. With Moussa Dembele hitting a hat trick against a team from Ibrox, something the likes of Henrik Larsson and Kenny Dalglish failed to do, combined with Sinclair and his five in a row run, -although I’m sure Charlie Nicholas did something similar-or better- back in the eighties, though it may not have been at the start of the season, and the McGrory comparisons, its no surprise to learn that Ian Andrews is now concerned he’ll be usurped in the all time Celtic Diddies team.

For younger readers, Ian Andrews played for Celtic against Rangers, and this is more or less what he looked like for most of the game;

Image result for Ian andrews Celtic

He played a total of five games for Celtic, conceded something like two hundred goals and failing to catch the ball on any occasion, or even get in the way of it as it hurtled goalwards.

I’m kidding, but by god he was bloody awful. Even defenders used to try and knock him out of the way when the ball went near him.

These days, he’s got his own business, where he is under strict orders to keep his arms crossed and not to pick anything up.

He’s in physiotherapy and sports medicine…

No, I’ve no idea either.

So, with five games gone, one less than the chasing pack, Celtic are three points clear at the top of the league , with that game in hand. Hearts, St. Johnstone and Aberdeen follow, with newly promoted “rangers ” now starting to find their level in the top flight.

The gap may be a little distorted as the fixtures computer has had all of the top four playing against each other, presumably to provide some good games early on to catch the publics imagination.

With fifth placed “rangers ” still to play Hearts and aberdeen, it doesn;t look good for their supporters , especially as Joey Barton, the self confessed best player in Scotland, almost certain to be either on his way out, or on his way to a relaxing few weeks in front of the telly on full pay.

Apparently, according to the Record, after his bust up with Andy Halliday and Mark Warburton, he’s got to beg for forgiveness in order to have any chance of ever playing for “rangers ” again, which I’m sure the shy, humble scouser will have no problem in doing.

Warburton, now feeling the pressure as his team is forced to play full time opposition, is starting to crack. He stormed out of a press conference when tepeatedly asked about the Barton situation, and then went on to descrobe the 0-0 draw with Ross County as the best performance of the season, which it may have been, but its hardly something to shout about.

After complaining of negativity from the press, it seems he is being a little defensive, and this could be, as Chris Sutton on BT sports pointed out, because the job is too big for him, and sutton so far is the only one to break ranks on Warbsy, which has, in turn , brought him a little grief from the gullibiliies, who still have faith in the magic hat.

Oh wait, thats not him. Thats another comedian who’s best days are behind him.

That’s him. Another comedian who’s best days are behind him.

At Ibrox on Saturday, ahead of the Ross County game, they did their usual Armed Forces day, with troops abseiling into the ground, cannons roaring and national anthems blaring, all of which they do to show their support for the Army, Air Force and Navy, althougb they do actually stop short of paying the taxes needed to maintain them.

Still they did donate a quid from the sale of their match programmes, which became £4.50 for the day, instead of the usual £3.50, showing a financial transparency that deserves praise.

Speaking of transparency, this is worth a read, from the Offshore Game…

offshire-game-on-transparency

Who would have thought it ? A negligent SFA !

Can anyone help me out here. I’ve just come across this prediction for the season from a chap called Kenny MacDonald, who I confess I am unfamiliar with. Does anyone know who he is?

And more importantly where he is, as its imperative that he doesn’t miss any of his medication and its only fair we keep an eye on him.

As for a caption competiton, her’s a blast from the past..

Yes the defence was a mess but what makes matters worse is when the goalkeeper behind them can’t save a shot. De Vries maybe good at passing the ball around but what good is that if he can’t goalkeep ? He looks to short too or maybe that is his style, to try and look small and make it easy to hit the ball past him. I still think. 3 or 4 of the goals lost against Barcelona, Craig Gordon would have saved.
I hope Brendan Rodgers is true to his word and drop players who don’t perform because if we start with De Vries against Man city I fear the worst

I agree with all of that.
Every Manager at Celtic has a task to keep the fans happy when it comes to team selections and I feel Brendan may well be making a rod for his own back when it comes to DeVries and Gordon?
I think Gordon needed competition for the No1 slot for him to up his game again and hope these past 2 weeks are the wake up call he needed?
Fasan should not be overlooked either he’s done well when called upon.

I agree, now that De Vries has been given a chance he’s proved he’s not up to the standard needed. I hope Brendon Rodgers sees this also.

Its clear the defence is losing goals, in my opinion its becauae the back line keeps changing, it was the reason that gordons form suffered and he lost his place in the team. We must settle on a back four and keep it as much as possible , i thought oconell was doing well then he was dropped, in israel i feared the worst when i saw the defense was changed and a rookie right back in, janko had a shocker and so did the rest of them. The same happened in barcelona , the shape at the back changed and a rabitt in the headlights half fit right back played which didnt help the result. For me big somunovic looks class and has everything , hopefully he can give us some stability but until we settle on a first choice back line the goals will keep leaking , especially in the champions league!

I agree Simunovic looked assured when he came on. That said he could perhaps have done more for their equaliser and recognised that danger earlier. That rattled him and his next touch was a crazy misplaced pass that nearly let them in again.
He needs games now but by “resting” Toure economically that will cause the very disruption we want to avoid. A tough one for Brendan, hope he gets it right but a Sviat / Simo pairing may need to be selected and persevered with. With Gordon behind them.

Reply to  Gerry

I felt the same Gerry but when I watched it back a few times he was tracking the run of another(man marking?)and as pointed out by the panel Armstrong (who is not a defender)lost his man.
I don’t think Brendan is happy with his backline and is yet to decide which pairing/three are his best option?
For me though neither Ajer or O’Connell have put a foot wrong in defence so far this Season and we still have Boyata and Ambrose drawing a wage.
Perhaps the answer lies within that 4?

The defence was a shambles yesterday. BR needs to sort it out,. Forget about Man City for games against Kilmarnock. Very very poor. the manager does not have a reputation for building a solid defence.

Brilliant article. Couldn’t agree more about the defence. Glad Jojo’s transfer collapsed. We still need him at Celtic Park. And if was Craig Gordon, being dropped for Doris, I’d be pissed of as hell but I guess the manager will persevere with his own signings. Doris better get his act together before City come to town. #bringbackcraiggordonnow

Ralph What were that BT sports mob like over the so called sending off incident? we even had them bring in world cup ref 2010 Howard Webb to tell his expert opinion. Howard of course told us it was a penalty and a sending off(not that you actually saw Howard tell us). I look forward to seeing More of Howard when celtic are not on the BT sports live game, you know when the club formerly known as rangers are playing.

Any way thanks for the Caption award for the second time. i must be up there with Sue now. 😉

To be fair to BT, they do that with Howard Webb for all the games, he was stuck in a cupboard on Saturday reporting on any incident throughout the afternoon in the EPL and I’ve seen him been brought in a few times for Scottish games now.

Shug,
Sviatchenko clearly fouled the player, the striker is well within his rights to manoeuvre his body into any position he likes, if that manoeuvre then draws a foul, then it is a foul.

Agree on your logic Monti but not that it was a pen.
Looked to me like the Caley player realised defence were about to catch him and stuck his right leg out and then rolled over on his own knowing his leg would bring Sviachenko down on or beside him.
If you’re Foran though you must be wondering why the player didn’t shoot when he had the chance.

I am not the Dorus De Vries Fan club but I think we are in Scapegoat CSC land once again.

The keeper had no chance at the first goal and actually did HIS job at the second goal by punching the ball away from the danger zone.

The gap on the right hand side has been there ALL season and we even discussed it on the podcast. There is no cover so that guy getting toping a 40 yard cross pitch pass was sadly always on but defo avoidable from a team perspective.

As for the 2nd…the keeper punches it clear and then the midfield or forwards aren’t there to pick up and the defence all stand on the 6 yard line…he cant stop a centre forward flying in!

Brendan is getting off lightly here…he made an arse of team line up a few times now and his defensive tinkering is very worrying and needs shouted out. Sinclair and Roberts don’t cover back and this leaves major issues for full backs. Erik was all over the place yesterday and the right back is extremely circumspect defence wise sadly.

totally agree about our defence and yes the managers is chopping and changing to much at the back and this is the main reason why we are losing goals but the main reason De Vries is being questioned is because we have a much better keeper in Craig Gordon but this is again down to the manager, dont get me wrong i think Brendan is doing a fantastic job middle to front but at the back he needs to get it sorted and fast

I think mcgreggor gets a bit of stick that is unfair , yes he gave the ball away at times , he was trying to hard but give me that over the backwards and sideway passes from biton. Every time mcgreggor plays from middle to front our play looks fluent and quick , he is also capable of reverse passes which create chances for the strikers. I would like to see rogic take a step back and swap places with him, rogic could still use his skill beside brown and mcgreggor could attack more.

This is a big test for Brendan. Every manager we’ve had (after Big Jock and Jimmy McGrory who didn’t pick his teams— above in the caption photo) has persisted with his ‘favourites’ in the face of common sense. Sinclair is an amazing player and Toure has provided what little defence we have but Gamboa and De Vries look like mistakes from Brendan’s pre-Liverpool days. Both Sinclair and Toure have played with the biggest clubs but De Vries and Gamboa have not. Brendan, we won’t think less of you if you bench them and try to discover what our best defence will be. We have midfield problems as well. We don’t want to return to the embarrassments we were were having the last two seasons. Keeping a clean sheet is important in the games when we can’t score 4 or 5. Here’s what I think:
Gordon
Lustig/Simunovic/Toure/Tierney
Brown/Ajer
Griffiths (when fit)/ Rogic/Sinclair
Dembele
Longer term we’ll need a backup right back, Gamboa not good enough.
We need a defensive, snarling, holding midfielder.
We need to stop speedy wingers exploiting our flanks and tall neanderthals bossing our short central defence. Simunovic is the only tall CD we have. Sviatchenko needs brought in from time to time. I think Ronny Deila left us with one legacy:4-2-3-1 can be played in Europe and domestically. We need a system which prevents runs down the flanks and long balls over our heads. 4-4-2 might also work domestically. Sinclair could play up front with either Dembele or Griffiths.
I think these substitute players have a place in Celtic:
Bailly, Fasan, Izzy, Sviatchenko, Armstrong, Christie, Roberts. Christie can play on the wings as well. No sure where/when Ciftci will play. Does Brendan rate him? I am optimistic but the Inverness game reminds us what we’re up against. I’ve seen replays of the ‘incident’ yesterday and now think that Draper didn’t have control of the ball and should have been booked for diving. Sutton maintained that if there wasn’t a penalty then there was a dive. Sutton is refreshing as a pundit and actually has opinions on things, putting the Linekers,Ian Wrights and Shearers to shame. It was a dive and Draper should have been booked. However it was a clumsy and stupid challenge from Eric, one of many he’s made in the Hoops.
We shouldn’t underestimate Alloa who are top of their league. We should put out this team:
Gordon
Lustig/Simunovic/Toure/Izzy (Tierney’s earned a rest)
Brown/Ajer
Forrest/Rogic/Sinclair
Dembele
If we get a good lead, 3 or 4 nil, get the subs on: Christie,Armstrong,Ciftci, Roberts.
I like the look of this team, its manager and the season to come. Despair not about Man City. At home good things can happen.
Hail, hail. C’mon the Celtic.

Hugh67

Whilst I am not immediately impressed with either the new goalie or right back, we have to remember that Brendan has only been here a few months and before he gets us to the level he wants, he has a lot of experimenting to do with the current pool of players.
He’ll know better than us what needs improved and for me the most exciting part of this season will be watching the constant improvement in the team.
In Brendan I trust!

De Vries is shite.
Sviatchenko fouled the Caley player and if some are unaware, the striker is allowed to run across the path of a defender.

I think andy is spot on with this Draper caused the tangle of legs by sticking his leg out and into the path of Sviatchenko who was by this point looking good to get to the ball first.
Draper did NOT put his body across as suggested.
He put his leg out in an attempt to deny the defender access to a ball he no longer had control of.

We don’t know if Gamboa is good enough as he has just arrived. I would venture you get what you pay for usually but he will need time. He hasn’t played in two years. The defence has been a problem for a while and seems to have worsened under Rodgers 2 clean sheets in 12 games is very poor. No clean sheets in 5 league games, suggests he does not see it as a major problem as all domestic opponents are garbage who will need to score 3 or 4 to beat us. He may be intending to ‘fix it’ as we go along. Doesn’t augur well for the CL. And is a less than convincing strategy for the Cups, as anything can happen in one off games. His substitutions were poor yesterday. Why introduce Jozo rather than Christie, for MvGregor who was rubbish, and reshuffle at the back while trying to score the third. It was obvious whart was going to happen yesterday. Them scoring was on the cards. But should have been avoided

I feel the old negativity coming back after that performance. So many had an off game: Erik, Gamboa, Dembele, Roberts, Lustig. it suggests the manager can’t really lift them up after a poor performance. And his selection is suspect with DV and Gamboa. It reminded me of the Deila era. Talk about a porous defense! Some really wild and wasteful shots ( mcgregor especially) and greed for self glory rather than passing to someone in a better position ( Roberts especially ). Didn’t think it was a penalty or a dive as the Caley guy lost his balance. I’m sort of in Groundhog Day territory at the moment.

That seems fair enough Hugh, although remember the same things were said at Liverpool and BR made the same mistakes for weeks, right up until he got the sack. In fact , his after match comments literally minutes before he got his jotters were a repitition of what he had been saying for 2 months. He cannot possible have watched De Vries’ performances and came to the conclusion he is better than Gordon. His distribution in his first game was garbage. He has also shipped a few goals that Gordon would have saved. I think Gordon would have saved the equaliser yesterday and the Barca free kick. i was disappointed by the team yesterday, I know people are talking about the shots at goal but they were relatively easy for the keeper. He had a good game but done what he was supposed to do. Their second was a terrible goal for an amateur team to lose. I do hope he is not going to stick with favourites.

Well if that’s one of our off days, then bring it on.
The game should have been won,and we were the dominant team. I think De Vries didn’t perform that badly to be honest but I only saw the highlights, and Gamboa needs game time,we need to play players to get them upto match fitness.
James Forrest protects the wing better than Paddy, though Paddy does have more tricks.
It’s a great place to be with two great talents. Scott Sinclair is just terrific,I said when he signed he would score 20 goals a season. Add this to Griff and Dembele, then we have a holy trinity than will be very hard to stop.
The midfield is our weakness, the incident concerning Eric is caused by stupidity by McGregor, who should know better by now.
We keep making the same stupid mistakes in midfield,it is poor,we need players to be strong and brave in possession of the ball, and to be aware of what is going on around them.
We haven’t seen it from any of them.
I would stick with De Vries and Gamboa in midweek,I would introduce Commons Christie Ajer Henderson Cifti into the team,as those guys need game time too,in case injuries come along.
So for me,
De Vries
Gamboa Jose OConnell Izzy
Armstrong Ajer Henderson
Christie Cifti Commons.
Keep the big guns for the bench bigger fish to fry.

Correcto Andy, With all your posts.Busy, Busy, Busy.

I dont think their is a direct correlation between not qualifying for the C.L. and player sales.HA.HA.HA.
2015-2016 turnover £52 mill.Expenses £57 mill.Shortfall made up with player sales (Van the Man).
Profit £0.5 mill.Cash in bank £10.5 mill.
On the year our fitba. expectations were not met, well Pete employ a REAL fitba. Manager that kens his job and not the diddy yin that yoo employed.
Next year our turnover will be around £80 mill.YA Beuty.

Yes their was a lt wrong with the team yesterday, especially after a grubbing by Barca.
Cally hung on in and got a draw, that can happen after a CL game.
However DeVries is poor, Gambo seems like a lost boy, and why no Forrest?
Maybe he will pla Gordon, Henderson, Christie and Izeiguire against Allos
Any ways still enjoying the happenings at Castle Greyskull

Katrina? My wife’s name…you don’t suppose…nah!
I think Gordon is only as good as his back four. Look at his excellent record with Denayer and Van Dijk. The secret to our back four is Simunovic’s fitness. I think this year at least Toure and Simunovic should be the pairing. Get Gordon back in with Lustig/Simunovic/Toure/Tierney.
Boyata/Sviatchenko/O’Connell/Ajer to sub.
I am also still a fan of Efe Ambrose, the only ‘natural’ Centre Back we have. Monti, don’t choke on your Coco Puffs! Can’t recall Efe letting 7 past him ( like Toure and Sviatchenko) although Juve threatened.Surely, in all Fenian land, there must be one other member in the Efe fan club…or, am I all alone?! We should stick with 3 at the back and let both WB’s defend the wide areas.
3-4-3 would be my preferred setup with our current squad.

By the way. Here’s some stuff for Brendan.
Win Six in a Row please.
No talk of a treble but at least one domestic cup.
Try like hell to get that third spot in the CL group.
A good run in the Europa League.
Get some players in to improve us for the next two or three years for the CL.
Hope all this meets Roy Keane’s approval!

When all players are fit who will be our strongest 11.
I’m going for 3 at the back.
Gordon
Eric Toure Jose.
Rwb Lustig. LWB Tierney.
Def midfielder Broony.
Forrest Dembele Sinclair. To run them ragged. High pressing.
Griffiths. Up front.
Subs Roberts Rogic McGregor Armstrong Commons Cifti De vries

I think that if Brendan picks players on the basis of contribution and form, then he will have to drop Gamboa and DeVries. Also, given the CL and other cup commitments as well as league games we will see rotation in the first team. That worries me a little as I’d prefer to see a settled first 11 and settled subs bench. To be honest we should have pumped ICT by 6 or more goals on Sunday and the strikers need to up their game a bit when they have multiple opportunities. That is what will buy us time to fix the defensive line up and settle it at least in domestic games. Meanwhile over at the bigotdome their new shiny highest paid mouth, has mouthed in the wrong direction. I think he is done there as the orcs have clearly decided he is to blame for whatever happened post 5-1 thrashing. great entertainment value

We were very unlucky not to win away from home after playing away in Europe, and then travelling up there. We’re 3 points clear at the top of the league with a game in hand, and we’re in the Champions league (hardest group).
BR will no who’s performing and who isn’t.
In BR we trust
