The coverage for this first game between Celtic and the new team from Govan is becoming childish. A need to pander to what’s left of their readership the press, and other media outlets, is informing and generating a whole host of rubbish.

This takes the form of things like ”who’s your best Celtic and rangers starting 11?”, ”Do you think that Celtic really are fitter now than they were the last time these teams met?” etc’, etc., All boring stuff.

The real story here however is overlooked.

I find it interesting that despite a lot of noise being generated by Celtic fans that this game really doesn’t matter because its Celtic v a new team (I agree with the new team reality, let me make that clear) there is also a high expectation level and I sense a growing excitement among Celtic fans. The excitement is around Celtic ”putting the new team in their place”

However the concept of ”putting them in their place” in itself means that we (I use the collective because we Celtic fans are in this together after all) are bestowing an unwarranted ”special” tag on them. We wouldn’t for example be going into a game against the likes of Hamilton or Motherwell with the hope that we’d be ”putting them in their place” The special tag is just not justified: or is it.

The feeling among Celtic fans around this game and the ”lets put them in their place” attitude is less about the new team’s quality, there isn’t much there lets face it, than it is about past, justified or perceived, wrongs suffered by Celtic fans and (again being honest) people of Irish connection at the hands of what the new team represents, not the collection of aging players that make it up.

So this game on Saturday actually takes on a significance that far outstrips that of the now defunct ”Old Firm” games of the past. Here we have a team from the other side of Glasgow that plays out of the same stadium that Rangers IL played out of, that pretends, helped by the Scottish media, to be Rangers IL in a different form, and that has the backing of thousands, did someone mention 500 million?, fans. That new team is now the focal point for all of the bigotry and anti-catholic / anti-Irish hate that the sub-culture that supported Rangers IL now clings on to.

The fact that they really aren’t Rangers IL miraculously raised from the dead but are in fact a club a 4 years old club who don’t have a secure financial footing and who are trawling the edges of the football transfer market just to put a squad together tells its own story.

This team doesn’t matter to Celtic in the scheme of things.

If they survive the season financially they will struggle on the pitch once the legs start to tire, injuries pile up and they land on the receiving end of a couple or more, hopefully starting on Saturday, tankings from other teams in the league who are more organised, better managed and who show them the respect they deserve: none, because they haven’t earned it.

No, what matters to Celtic fans is everything they represent, in whatever form of focus that happens to be, either Rangers IL as in the past or as the new 4 years old club with its retinue of hopeful hangers on they call fans.

So despite what a lot of Celtic fans say and probably would like to believe, this game on Saturday does matter, a lot. It matters because Celtic want to maintain their 100% record, it matters because of the Scottish media and what they are trying to do to resurrect Rangers IL in a new ersatz form and it matters because of what this latter point means to Celtic fans everywhere and to the people with Irish connections who are associated with our club.

So I for one am looking forward to this game more than I did when we played Rangers IL because I too want them ”put in their place” and can’t wait to see the drivel that will fill the media about ”teething troubles”, ”bad luck”, ”Celtic’s spending power”, ”This is the first season at the top table and things will improve” and all that jazz.

Think about Jock Stein on Saturday as I’m sure everyone at Celtic Park will be doing too. I’m also sure that Brendan Rogers is feeling the same way about this game as I am and he will have our team fired up to wipe the floor with the new team.

I choose not to watch this game same as the last one. Nothing has happened to change my mind in that sevco should not be admonished as they are the same bigots with the same scum cheating Scottish football. I expect a war and not a game and I expect WC to help his brethren and I expect the good old Scottish media to call us paranoid. Celtic are expected to win easy but it is never easy playing 12 men.I hope to enjoy a good win but I can’t watch a crooked team. Hail hail

Can’t help thinking that the only thing that will beat celtic is the celtic complacency, I’d love to see Brendan bury this mob out of site, nothing would please me more to see them leaving in droves in the first half, fifty quid lighter, but a whole lot more enlightened as to how far behind they really are. However I do believe if celtic go a couple up action stations will be taken, by collum and the police.

Its disappointing seeing ex Celtic players getting caught up in the “Old Firm” lie and giving it more oxygen. What they remember were Old Firm games against Rangers 1872. That is in the past and the current 2012 incarnation and tribute act are a new entity that has nothing to do with the “Old Firm”. I’m happy to see Celtic calling it a Glasgow Derby on a par with games against Partick Thistle. I’m delighted to see Aberdeen calling a shovel a shovel and failing to list any previous encounters with the tribute act because there have been no previous encounters. A fact! One thing that will be reminiscent of Rangers 1872 is the bigots that will show up and go through their normal hateful anti Irish and anti Catholic repertoire. All of Scotland could do without this tribute act followed by bigot dinosaurs from another age. Lets beat them and move on.

Cartvale88

I will not attend the so called match because everything they stand for is hatred.
I am unsure if I will even watch this tribute acts attempts to kick ten bells out of our team, in the hope they can damage our Champions League attempts.
Gollum has already been found wanting on previous visits, where the weirdest of decisions are made, the Broadfoot penalty when Mastoveric was no where near him.
I believe that they will be found out and will vent their ire on the Stadium, if this is done Celtic should broadcast this to the world and take issue with the SPFL
Never mind we have a real football match coming up agains a proper team with fantastic supporters in a great city, that should clear the diarrhoea of the SMSM wall

The joy of beating them ‘never’ makes up for losing to them, it was bad enough when they had world renowned stars playing for them, the thought of getting beat by the ‘dirty dozen’, doesn’t bare thinking about. We’re not dealing with no subculture here, it is the culture and fans from ‘all’ teams want to see us get ‘a doing’. Get the baw doon, an play fitbaw The Glasgow Celtic Way. HH

So the Herald deems fit to give comment on Malones bar advertising the game as Celtic v Zombies but no comments on Sevco lining up with a sectarian flute band.
You would think they were stirring up trouble for the good people and punters of Malones.
But that would be stupid ?

Pensionerbhoy

Desi,

I am in awe of your fertile imagination. One dreads to think what goes on in that head of yours. Whatever is breeding there, it provides us with first rate entertainment and we thank you for it.

It was a great bit of fun doing the survey and I was very excited to see it concluded I should take the penalties for the other team. That way the wee club have no chance of scoring in spite of Wee Wullie Call -um – me – an RE Teacher – because I can do miracles – like seeing through the back of my heid. I remember way back – actually it was way, way back – Zimmer โ€“ I couldnโ€™t stay on my feet – scored a barrow-load for the school team and he was the goalie.

Joking aside, I definitely never wanted us to be playing anything that based itself in that sewer of anti-ism and megalomaniac self-importance and justification called Ibrox. It is even worse that this half-breed new entity has donned the full garb of the previous incumbents and feels comfortable wallowing in the mire deposited by the uncontrollable and sectarian support of its predecessor and the lies of its fawning creators. Nor does it help that it is still feasting the media with cheap rancid mutton now that one requires a bank account to purchase lamb. However, ever into freebies and misleading, if not poisonous, menus, the TV, radio and press are in ecstasy at the opportunity of excreting the Old Firm (whatever that was meant to actually be) myth without the decency of wiping the toilet seat when the shit is conclusively laid at their arses. Like storks and babies, Santa and Christmas or fairies in the garden, they are steeped in mythology which they believe they can make reality by simply constantly harping on about it as if truth is the obvious conclusion to anything that exits their stuffed gobs. The famed 19th century monster was indisputably brought to life by the determination and persistence of the eccentric doctor Frankenstein and by the use of body parts from various dead bodies. This new creation most definitely proceeded to walk the same earth as every other human at the time but I doubt any of the individuals involved in its formation would want to claim to be that monster. Not even the good professor would do so yet our media and football authorities are totally committed to the destructive horror they created.

I have written the above solely to explain and justify my stance on Saturday’s game to those among our support – any other support is an irrelevance to me โ€“ who claim we all have missed games against a club from Govan or we are deluding ourselves if we say we are not exceptionally excited about the forthcoming fixture. For me Celtic play an unknown quantity at league level this Saturday. From all reports it is a poor quality team, worthy only of a position somewhere in the lower half of the SPFL. It is just up from a lower division and, on paper at least, should be well beaten on the day. It is nothing more nor nothing less. As the guy on The Chase would say, “It is just another day at the office” for Celtic, over and done with in 90 minutes and, unless we have a freak performance โ€“ and we most certainly have had these far too often over the years – Celtic should be convincing winners just as expected against any of the weaker sides in the league. For that reason, I will pay the game no more attention than I would say Partick or Kilmarnock and with the same expectation or disinterestedness. I would love it to be a crushing result, if for no other reason than to get it right up those who are indulging themselves in the current inordinate hype, but I am not so presumptuous as to expect a thrashing. God knows, we have played some whoppers against very poor teams over the years. But I do see those results as exceptions and I believe it would be very much the same should it happen on Saturday. So, please, let no one tell me I am any more excited or concerned about Saturday than normal. As someone already mentioned, I would feel completely excited, as I used to in the eighties, and somewhat nervous if it were a good team such as Hearts or Aberdeen, but, come on, a brand new entry to the SPFL?

To sum up, I am preparing to enjoy a good win on Saturday and expect to easily get three points to stay top of the league. I am sure that will be achieved even without the aid of my deadly zimmer.

I remember my da telling me of the time that for some strange reason the committee of the local csc and the rangers csc got the strange idea of sharing a bus to the cup final in the early 60s
The guys all got on well with one another, drank in the same pubs,so it made financial sense to share.I know, I shook ma head when ma Da started telling me the story too.
But that’s what was decided the rangers bus was ran by big ted,a staunch Presbyterian, and it got the nickname of the bible bus, from other rangers fans.No singing no swearing, etc was the order from big ted. He expected the same conduct from the band of rebels.HaHa fat chance.
Anyway ma Da says that the comittee had said to them guys you need to hide your colours till you get on the bus,and we are half way there.
So all was well they were sharing the whisky, the beers, and the guys good as gold kept with the plan. The only thing that was known to anyone which side you were on,was the pin badges on their jacket lapels.
Of course they got there no bother,it was of course after the final whistle and the return journey that would end the truce Haha.

Just a thought… I hope the Green Brigade stick to singing proper songs, such as:

Just Can’t Get Enough,
Lets All Do The Huddle,
Etc…

NO rebel songs, no songs praising the IRA, no “political” banners or flags…

Then, let’s see SKY, Regan, Doncaster, the lunatic board of RRM try to explain away and justify the inevitable Billy Boys, F**k The Pope, etc. Then let’s see what the Scottish government do about it – probably the cubed root of hee-haw, multiplied by Pi to the power of 10!!

Even better – let’s see the above, and the SMSM, find something negative to say about us (our club, our team, our fans).

Nope!!.. Think about it! As soon as we open our mouths, the pointy-finger brigade will be looking to stick the boot into us. If we leave the “hymns” to that rancid mhob, then the fingers can only be pointed in one direction, and it certainly won’t be in ours!! We know what they’re like, the SMSM know what they’re like (but fail to highlight it!), so it’s about time we used every opportunity to let the wider world know about it.

About time too.
The EPFL Board of Directors is meeting today in Amsterdam to discuss the outcome of the reform of UEFA Club Competitions.

The European Leagues believe the way this process has been conducted by UEFA to be unacceptable for an organisation that claims to be the governing body of football in Europe. A major change in European football has been announced without the support and consensus of the organisers of domestic league football in Europe. This decision will have a detrimental impact on domestic competitions and will lead to an exponential growth in the financial and sporting gap between the biggest clubs in Europe and all the others.

As a result of the decision taken by UEFA, the EPFL believes that UEFA has breached the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organisations.

In the event that the EPFL were to terminate the MoU as a result of such breach, this would give all European Leagues total freedom to schedule their matches as they see fit โ€“ including on the same days and at the same kick-off times as UEFA Club Competitions.

Finally, the EPFL calls on the new UEFA President, to be elected next week, to reconsider the reform relating to UEFA Club Competitions. The European Leagues stand ready to meet the new UEFA President to discuss these matters.

The EPFL will further clarify its position during a press conference that shall take place at 15:30hs in Amsterdam.

The EPFL Board of Directorsโ€™ meeting was attended by the following Leagues:

– Spanish La Liga
– German Bundesliga
– English Premier League
– French Professional Football League
– Russian Premier League
– Liga Portugal
– Dutch Eredivisie
– Swiss Football League
– Swedish Professional Football League
– Danish Professional Football League
