Celtic Diary Tuesday August 6: Saturdays Game In Perspective

Ahead of Celtic’s next important match, the club were handed a bit of a bonus when Lionel Messi and Barcelona admitted the Catalan clubs talisman might not make the game.

“Tests conducted today on Leo Messi have confirmed that the player is still having trouble with the adductor muscle in his left hamstring. He has been recommended to lighten his training load over the next few days and his availability will depend on how the issue progresses.”

The match takes place just one week from today, and whilst the group favourites are going to have a weekend fraught with worry, Celtic will warm up with a game against newly promoted “rangers “, which should allow them to shake off any rustiness acquired during the international break.

“Take it easy” will be the warning passed to the players from manager Brendan Rodgers, as he ponders the possibility of sending out a weakened team to avoid the possibility of Celtics main men picking up injuries against the aging but enthusiastic “rangers ” defence.

You can’t blame him.

The new club have only been around for a few short years, and whilst their climb to first class football has been admirable, achieved on a budget second only to Celtic, the high pressure environment of a packed Celtic Park-somewhere the club have never actually played-may prove overwhelming for the Ibrox collection of journeymen players and managers.

Despite this, the media have cranked the game into the showpiece of the season, as they pretend the visitors are in fact, Rangers, the former rivals of Celtic who went into liquidation a few years ago following a massive mismanagement of financial resources. It might make for good tv, but its not what it used to be.

With “rangers ” pretending to be Rangers, in order to make the game seem important, perhaps when Celtic face Barcelona , we could pretend we’re Real Madrid, and maybe generate a little more interest worldwide.

There have been an astonishing amount of puff pieces in the papers already, offering advice to the “rnagers 2 players, most of whom have never played in a game with so much hype around it, or at least with so much unjustified hype around it, and they may be feeling a little bewildered by it all.

Perhaps its being done by the media to stop them loking at their contracts and saying publicly that they haven’t signed for Rangers, but for a new club aimed at providing a service for the estranged fans of the old club.

Including those with laptops who are professional journalists, or at least thats what it says on their contracts.

The game, marketed as the biggest in Scotland, and the sole reson television companies buy into the SPFL, will be shown on tv at the same time as the Manchester derby in England , by the same company, which shows how highly they value it. Although there are claims that its because Manchester City and Celtic both play champions League games on the Tuesday, the overlap could have been avoided by making the glasgow sides play earlier, say 11am, and the Manchester teams kick off at 1pm.

This may seem a little odd, but there are games on a Friday night these days, and that too, would have been an option. Whenever Celtic play whatever form of Rangers is currently in use, there is trouble after the game, and with a whole day to drink, and Sunday to recover, perhaps the Friday night option would have been a better bet.

Especially as it would limit the pre match drinking as people would be at work.

The debate will rage on this week as to whether or not its an “old firm ” game, which of course it isn’t, as the establishment tries to sell something that they claim is as Scottish as porridge, the krankies and highland toffee, when in fact all you will see are Irish flags, Union flags and palestinian flags, two of which represent freedom, the other oppression.

Scotland kind of gets left out on these occasions.

For the new club, its the biggest game of their season, for Celtic its a warm up ahead of one of several big games in the run up to Christmas, yet for some reason I think that will be overlooked, but hopefully not by Celtic.

Something else that needs the greatest of care is how Celtic FC handle the pre match press conferences.

As the questions by the hacks will be loaded, and as the papers will be desperate for Celtic to recognise the new club as the same one that is currently undeging the liquidation process, it might need a little bit more preparation by the PR guys, to avoid misleading anyone.

You see, theres a certain amount of naivety around the Ibrox club, which was expertly and beautifully explained by dmaclaughlin87, who commented after the recent trip to Belfast by “rangers “, for a testimonial.

Saturday September 3rd, South Belfast, one of the world’s most decorated football clubs is involved in a glamour testimonial to celebrate one of the Irish League’s veterans. But, while the highly decorated South Belfast Blues suffer defeat to a 4 year old club from Scotland, we’re not here to talk about the football, it’s all about the political and cultural ramifications of what went on in the stands, on the pitch and around the grounds of The National Football Stadium Arena at Windsor Park Road (or something like that). While much will be made of the naive behaviour of the infantile football club, or its legions of followers that have gravitated to them following the liquidation of Glasgow Rangers, I would like to focus on Linfield.

The full article, under the title

Not unexpected, very unwelcome

can be read here,  dmaclaughlin article   and its certainly worth a look, because while the new club and its directors may think they are amongst friends, the reality is very different.

But then they don;t really do reality, do they ?

What I am  afraid of this Saturday, is mirrored in that articles last line. The testimonial was for Jamie mulgrew, a respected Irish professional, and yet…

and yet all the talk is not of him, on his undoubtedly deserved big day, but  of them, the club and the support. They hijacked the mans big day and shamelesly rolled back the years ti a tine ireland is trying to forget, trying to move forward from.

Pandered to by a media in a pointless exercise to put them where they feel they belong, when in reality they should have been condemned, but they won’t be.

It’s why I refuse to get even remotely excited about the game, because after all, it is what it is, a game between the champions of Scotland and a newly promoted club desperately clinging on to someone elses past, someone elses revenue stream, in a pathetic attempt to appear relevant.

What worries me, and I think its a justifiable worry, is that come Saturday afternoon , none of the talk will be about the football.

Like when you get rid of the cancer, and a subsequent biospy tells you its back….it will be talk of  an illness that has become so embedded in our culture that its proving remarkably difficult to shift.

Even when we thought it was dead.

While there is no doubt they are a new club, it’s still the same scum that will enter their part of our ground, same songbook and same acrid smell of urine floating across from their section.
If they are going to pretend they are the same club then we must humiliate them!

An honest game and result is all I want. No interference from the man in black or the police. No don’t be scoring again in the 2nd half, no rediculous yellow cards early on, breaking the play up with petty frees. And their support to go home peacefully and hopefully with their tails well between their legs! Give them 90 minutes of hell boys! Coybig

Once again the fixture list “conveniently” has us playing a difficult game prior to a huge European match.
I say difficult, not in a football sense, because we should wipe the floor with them…and I hope we do…but because they will be out to put the boot in early doors…mark my words.
Broony will be “noised up” by arsehole Barton and Patrick Roberts, among others, will be hammered.
If you look closely at the opening games we’ve had, relative to European games, then you’ll see that the fix was in.
When will our Club stand up and question this crap..and also question why Celtic players get booked for celebrating a goal…and Sevco players don’t.
Oh and not to mention resolution 12.
Time somebody grew a pair…Peter. !!
PS: It will be interesting to see how the Official Programme describes the “history” of the Club coming to play us.

Just phoned the SPFL there and had a ‘ conversation ‘ with a guy called David.
I was asking all sorts of straightforward quesions about the Newco, he had not one answer to any of my questions and fucking stuttered all the way through, here is an example of what we are all up against, it really fucking is incredible.

Monti ” David, you can’t have a club run up £170m of debt, go into administration, enter the liquidation process yet pertain to be the same club, this is something that is of interest to every single club and fan in the country, surely “?

David ” Is it “?

Saturday to me is just a league game nothing more than that, they died we know and they know. I say we play a weakened side as we will still have enough to smash them,We have as was said in the article bigger fish to fry it will hurt them more if we treat them as insignificant.

Devoy45

Monti, excellent. Says it all. I won’t be at the match on Saturday. How many of you guys are going? We should play our strongest team, always. We want to win our league games so we can get to the CL every year. Against Sevco:
4-4-2
Gordon
Lustig/Toure/Sviatchenko/Tierney
Forrest/Brown/Rogic/Sinclair
Dembele/Griffiths
2-1 or 3-1 to the bhoys.
Roberts also to figure.
Then we can focus on Barca.
4-2-3-1
Gordon
Lustig/Toure/Sviatchenko/Tierney
Brown/Bitton
Forrest/Rogic/Sinclair
Griffiths

Dembele to figure.
2-0 or 3-0 to the Catalan giants but I hope for more surprise than that. It would be good to score against them. Part of me expects us to do more than just lose with dignity. C’mon the Celtic.

Would have preferred a total boycott. That is the only way to draw full attention to their status as a new club. You don’t want to legitimise them in any way. I will be going for a walk on Saturday afternoon and will return home to find out the score. It will be tight They will be looking for a performance by their big players and I think they will get it. But for 90 minutes? I can see Celtic winning 2-1. If they score first they will shut up shop and try to play for at least a draw. If Celtic score early they will need to come out and then it could get funny. I really hope we can get one in the first ten minutes. BR needs to get them drilled this week on keeping the head. Professionalism is the name of the game, especially from our Captain who needs to be reminded that he is Celtic’s captain.

To me it makes no difference whether or not it is a New Club we face this week or not.
It’s the same rivalry round the pitch and elsewhere regardless.
Also there is a side playing ours who need to be beaten in order that we extend our lead at the top of the table.
The fact it is a tribute act is actually irrelevant.
Just laugh at the absurdity of the situation and back yer side regardless I say.
Celtic will milk the opportunity to get a few more quid into the war chest and I have no issue with that so long as they do.
Bring them on batter them on the park then rip the piss elsewhere.
We are Celtic we have nothing to hide.

schoosh71

The ‘ref’ as usual will play a big part in this game as they always do. Them’s will be able to kick everything in Green & White and as soon as we put a challenge in it’ll be a booking. I want to see the team put in a performance for the full 90 mins and to not even give them 1 shot on target.A total complete control performance, with some ‘scintillating’ football on show. HH

Because he has the propensity to lose the head and act like an idiot to the detriment of the team. A needless sending off could be costly. If he cannot screw the nut then don’t play him. He has been sent off once or twice playing for Celtic when it was foolish and needless to do so. His stupid kick out against Neymar and I remember a really stupid sending off against Motherwell at Celtic Park when he took a wee bit of revenge possibly against Lasley in the final few seconds which saw him pick up a ban. We should be beyond reproach, if they start kicking lumps out of us we just need to ensure that we rise above it. We do not sink to their level. Remember their crocks will get five fouls before a booking, in Bougherra’s case it was 7 after being booked. Brown will be lucky to get two. Brown needs to be reminded of this.

I would prefer to win 10-0 but just saying that it will be a walk over doesn’t mean it will be. That kind of attitude was part of the problem in the semi. We thought that even if we play pish we would still win. Celtic need to be well prepared for this. That is not as easy as you think as the most important game is not Saturday, it is next Tuesday. They have half a team that have played in big games. Thye are past their best but it doesn’t mean that they can’t play well in the odd game. I would not be surprised if Barton and Krancjar were outstanding on Saturday. May be not for 90 minutes but for part of the game. Rodgers needs to plan for them having the game of their lives. And Celtic still beating them. The victory is all that counts. I think they will play for a draw. If Celtic score early, meaning we need to Blitz them from the start then it could get difficult for them. If we are two up at half time we need to go for the jugular. You also need to remember that we have not kept a clean sheet since Motherwell in the cup. Rodgers team has only kept about 2 clean sheets since he joined. All this talk of 5 and 6 nothing is way off the mark. Plan for the worst. Always.

ewanbhoy

I watched them against Killie and they are pish poor, they have no pace in their team and at the back they are a shambles, we will easily create at least 15 chances against them and take 5 of them.
Look at their first 4 games which have been against the bottom 4 teams…..2 wins and 2 draws , which really should have been 3 draws had they not got a last minute winner, so please tell me why you think this is a hard game for us and why we should prepare for the worst ? Would it not be better to think positive and go out there and destroy them. ?

Brown has more chance of going off than Barton. Wullie Collum will see to that. Getting ‘wired in’ will ensure that it happens. Outplay them, out think them. Don’t get dragged into a physical battle as that will suit them. Their mob will be more protected than ours.

Surely, it is about winning and moving towards 6 in a row. Nothing that will happen on Saturday will shut them up. Nor will it change the SMSM. They died and still they shout their mouths off. Don’t care about mocking them either. For me, they are not Rangers. I want to win and then forget about it completely. Unpleasant having to play them. I am not excited, I want another win and it will one of the three/four games I will not watch this season.

On a different subject. An early candidate for Knob of the Week has to be the Herald’s Matthew Lindsay. Writing about sectarianism polluting the “Celtic – Rangers” rivalry on Monday he correctly points out that BT Sports coverage of the “Kilmarnock-Rangers” game was married by several audible airings of The Billy Boys. Then, just to try to even things up so as not to offend the Sevcoids, he states that next day the Celtic-Aberdeen game at Parkhead was shown nationwide by Sky Sports and “Ooh, ah, up the ‘Ra” was clearly heard emanating from the new safe-standing section shortly after kick-off. The game wasn’t shown nationwide by Sky or anybody else but why let the facts get in the way of a good story?

All this stick it to them is crap. We are bigger, better, and respected wherever we go.
they have to go to Belfast and rake up garbage, they are garbage, no comment from the SMSM.
Celtic fans fly the Palestinian flag, the SMSM are horrified, and fail to mention the appreciation and support from around the world
If we perform as we played against the second, third and fourth placed teams in the SPFL it should be a comfortable victory.

Monti m8 he will be tied up in knots, Brendan has to play Paddy Roberts, Sinclair, Griiff, Forrest and Rogic. Play the ball on the ground quickly, those guts will tear them to shreds. Brown has to keep the Heid. As does all the players, nothing stupid.
But Brendan says he studies all Refs,I’m sure he has briefed all the players on how to conduct themselves in the match.
They will have at least one sending off, after watching the tackles at Dundee,if that’s how they play. He will go he has said too much now,not to put himself about. Def sending off for that cunt.

How do you work that out? They are detached from reality. They have ignored death, you can’t get any crazier than that. Right enough, a lot of our own have given them a boost by seeming to ignore that they have died. If we win 12-0. They will be quiet for a day or day then it will be back to ‘going for 55’. Warbiola has got until the beginning of November, nothing will happen to him because of the game on Saturday. They will review the situation when they have played every one in the league. If anything the game at Pittodrie is a huge one for them. Especially if we beat them on Saturday. If they are 10 points behind Celtic after the first third of the season, then there will be ructions. We just need to keep winning.

Roberts for me on Saturday. He is a better player than Forrest.

He may become better than Forrest, but you forget the big goals and performances Forrest has given and continues to give!

Monti you play directly into their hands by treating them like old Rangers. Admit it you are one of these guys who has actually missed them? You live for these games! Personally, I rejoiced when they died and dreaded the day we would ever have to play them again as they would only gain credibility by being associated with us. My opinion has not changed I don’t want to watch us on the same park. I want t o win, but the old Rangers are dead and the new club are not our equal. Therefore, genuinely I don’t see what there is to get over excited over. It is a league game. No more important than the games coming up against Hamilton or Motherwell. I wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of treating it any differently as I truly believe they are not the same club.

John, nobody on here missed them m8. But we have to play what ever form they are in,and we have to beat them. The rest will take care of itself.
I wish I had your will power to go away and walk it off,I couldn’t content myself.
Fair play to you for that, but I just can’t wait to see the hoops destroy them.

Champions league, and a midweek cup fixture madness.

Lets not get into whether the real James Forrest has shown up or has just gone way for a few games, He has scored three goals this season already more than the whole of last season. Still would trust Roberts far more.
