Celtic Diary Monday August 22: Things You Won’t See In The Paper

A lot to catch up with today, so you’ll have to pardon me if I forget something. Like I forgot Knob of the Week on Friday, which is unusual, and in itself means that no-one stood out enough to win the coveted title, but over the weekend , and no doubt this week, candidates will up their game to make sure I don’t make the same mistake on Friday.

We’ve a lot to catch up on because there was a minor technical glitch on Saturday, which meant the site was down for a while, but it was soon sorted when the bill was paid. Due to our advertisement free policy, we need to chuck a few quid at the host every now and again, at least until the right advertiser with the right free samples comes along.

A holiday company, a luxury car manufacturer , a bank, that kind of thing.

If you thought the reporting in the mainstream media was slightly skewed, wait until you see how biased ( selective ) I can be…

Celtic continued their impressive start to the league campaign with a 4-2 win up at MacDairmid Park, Perth, as St. Johnstone were swept aside in the first half, allowed to make it interesting for a portion of the second, before the Hoops secured the game with a late goal.

With mnds on the trip to Israel, and the crucial second leg against Be’er Sheva, thats not really a surprise, and despite the best efforts of the SPFL fixtures computer, it might just be that Celtic come out of this month with maximum points against our three main rivals, even though two of the games were away from home.

And I’ve checked, it appears the computer will finally allow us a home game this Saturday.

Its been a tough month so far, and if we combine a possible nine points with League Cup advancement and Group stage qualification, then its entirely possible that Brendan Rodgers will have a shot at Manager of the Month, unless the award is chosen by the ones who usually choose it.

There was controversy surrounding the game on Saturday, as Craig Thomson, a referee described as “excellent ” by match commentator Derek Rae-presumably he and Chris Sutton have some sort of who can say the most ridiculous thing during a game challenge to liven it up for themselves-made up for his lack of yellow cards at Dens Park last week by brandishing it with enthusiasm this week. Except when a Celtic player was fouled, that is.

James Forrest picked up a booking for celebrating too near to the crowd…

Thomson used the yellow for this offence, as no doubt in his mind its much more severe than this, a tackle by Harry Forrester of “rangers ” against Dundee last week…

Its worth noting that a late winner at Ibrox for Kenny miller and “rangers ” didn’t earn  a yellow card for celebrating…

The referee guideline on cautions  for celebrating is there for fan safety, we believe, as supporters surge forward and injuries can be sustained in the crush.

This is another booking for over celebrating… Marvin Johnson of Motherwell, clearly putting lives at risk..

Leigh Griffiths also went into the book after he appeared-to Thomson at least-to dive in the penalty area. Television pictures did appear to show he was on the way down before he contact was made, if you look at the incident from a certain angle, i.e. that of someone who is looking for a player to dive so that he can book him, but even if that is the case , then its worth noting that Griffiths was actually leaning into the defender, in the way that any forward would in a similar situation to make his centre of gravity lower which, in turn , makes it harder for an opponent to push him off the ball.

In this instance, I’m going to call it a genuine honest mistake, perhaps the only one you’ll see this season. Despite what they said on Sportscene, where they didn’t take the circumstances into account, merely gleefully pointing out that Griffiths had leaned into the player and was on his way down before he felt the knee into the side of his leg.

Griffiths, of course, saw it differently..

We need to watch this, as Celtic are racking up quite a few bookings. Establishment favourites and financially stricken “rangers ” are not.

One might suggest a conspiracy…

One other thing about referees, and its a curious thought.

Willie Collum is the only referee in Scotland who actually gets any stick from the media. Now he’s certainly not a great referee, but he’s no worse than the rest of them, which suggests an undue influence on them as a whole, or just piss poor teachers.

Why does Collum make the papers ?

I cannot possibly imagine. He’s just a man trying to combine his refereeing ambitions with his work as a teacher of religion at a catholic high school….

Just saying, like…

Thomson had also angered BT sport, who are doing their best to promote the game in Scotland, unlike the BBC or Sky who treat it with a patronising air , by starting the second half before the broadcasters were ready.

Which annoyed Chris Sutton, the summariser, who has replaced Ronny Deila with Thomson as his own “Knob of the Season “, a decision its hard to criticise. Sutton felt it was because he had called the whistler a “bottler ” after he failed to send off Harry Forrester for the tackle pictured above…Forrester was already on a yellow card;

Thomsons problem is he can’t accept that he gets things wrong ie last week! Early kick offs unprecedented! Should answer to it but won’t ⚽️

Only two people know why halves started early John Fleming and Craig Thomson... https://twitter.com/johnnyreece20/status/767095566245498880

If Sutton is right, it shows a level of childish and petty behaviour from Thomson which will make the rest of BT’s coverage essential viewing.

Celtic flew out to Israel yesterday ahead of the qulifier against Be’er sheva, opting to go with this airline and luxury…

flying in style (thanks to andy bhoy for the link )

instead of something a little more practical considering they are flying into a war zone.

A war zone? Well, lets ask someone to define war zone…

War? It’s not a war. It’s a systematic shelling of a piece of land with no regard for the innocent lives below.

Can’t argue with that.

Israel started shelling the Gaza strip last night, an area which is reported as being twenty miles or so from the ground where Celtic are playing on Tuesday.

I don’t know about you, but that makes me feel uncomfortable. Not as uncomfortable as those being bombed, but if by getting back on the plane and telling UEFA that Celtic are not playing this game attention can be drawn to this barbaric act, and possibly even pressure brought to bear on the Israeli government, then it should be done.

During the first game, world wide praise for the stand made by the supporters gave us all a wee warm feeling. It certainly gave the Palestinians a sense that they had some support from the outside.

Its time to take things a step further.

Refuse to play the game.

Bombs dropping on civilians down the road, ordered by the government of the country that is host to the club, and support ?

Not my idea of a sporting contest.

Another way to keep the eyes of the world on these atrocities is to send a few quid to help…

Remember the idea of matching the UEFA fine with a charitable fund for the Palestinians ?

Its under way, with over £20,000 in the pot already..

“In response to this petty and politically partisan act by European football’s governing body we are determined to make a positive contribution to the game and today launch a campaign to #matchthefineforpalestine. We aim to raise £15,000* [US$19,560] which will be split 50/50 between Medical Aid Palestine (MAP) and to the Lajee Center, a Palestinian creative cultural children’s center in Aida Refugee Camp, Bethlehem,” the crowd funding page for the campaign says. So far the fans have managed to raise over £23,000.

( From Russia Today )

Maybe it will make a difference. Its certainly worth a try.

Anything else you won’t see in the papers ?

Racist tweets from Unionist MPs, perhaps ?

Thats the same support who are loved and praised throughout the world, you know…

Is it surprising that we get such a bad press.

Look at the faces on the hacks thrusting their mics at assistant manager Chris Davies.

There isn;t a single one of them, that in their own minds, isn’t imagining a different scenario…

Then theres the amusing tale of Joleon Lescott, another big name signing for Mark Warburton, or so it seemed. Nealty summed up by Cartuja, the noted internet artist..

Aston Villa, the club trying to offload Lescott, denied claims from Ibrox, repeated by the SMSM, that the player had failed a medical. Turns out he didn’t, he just didn’t fancy moving to glasgow and playing for that lot.

Can’t blame him, really.

And then there’s the banter, and how one mans comments are just in jest, whilst another must be hung, drawn and quartered for his, at least in the eyes of Chris “Union “Jack, of the Herald and the Evening Times…spotted by internet blogger The Clumpany..

Except, its not a myth , is it ?

Those of you who may have wondered why I kept pointing out that the new Not The View would be a collectors edition have their answer… get one at the Aberdeen game, and heres why…

The edition contains the letter that the Resolution 12 guys received from UEFA.

Unedited.

Prior to this, the media, in this case the Herald, would have had us believe that the communication between the Resolution 12 guys and UEFA was along these lines…

this was a selective and careful piece of editing from the original

See that original ?

Not only myself and Desi, but a few others who post on this site have all seen it. I’ve read it out loud, holding it in front of me in the way that Indiana Jones would hold a priceless document from ancient Egypt after he’s had to fight bears and tigers whilst windsurfing up the Nile to get it. ( Yeah ok, my draft for Indiana Jones and One Bastard Of A Weekend in Africa was rejected, and i still can’t see why )

It is genuine, and note the slight alteration from the one we saw to the one that appeared in the Herald.

Note also who signed it. The head of licencing for UEFA, who would know whats what.

Later today, a more in depth look at the revelation and its consequences will appear on the site , so keep your eyes open for that.

Fancy that, eh?

They were a new club all along….

The Going for 55 logo might have to undergo re calculation and subsequent adjustment.

By about 54.

As usual, the media, have remained silent on this, as have a few of the more vocal radical believers in perpetual life for football ckbs despite what the accounts say.

Its Monday, and as you know that means we do the Honest mistake of the Week, which goes to anyone who happens to do something that might help a certain club with their aspirations to become the relevant successor to a club which is now in liquidation.

And we’ve even got a celebrity to back us up on this one, entirely without his permission, of course, but he does appear to share the same sentiment…

Honest Mistake Of The Week

this week goes to the entire Scottish mainstream sports media, who knew this was out there, who knew where they could get a copy and instead decided to run with the same club myth, thus reducing themselves and the game in Scotland to a laughing stock in the eyes of the rest of the world.

Those pathetic spineless bastards have allowed a PR company to roll them over and tickle their tummy on this one.

Whilst a corrupt and colluding governing body continues to milk the game for their own personal use, the media, who have a responsibility to their readers, have shamefully ignored it, and even now ask us all to move on.

And for what ?

God only knows, but I hope it was worth it for them.

Because when all this os over, no credible paper, no credible news organisation at all , for thet matter, will touch them.

And no wonder.

They could start to make amends though…by asking Regan and Doncaster if they received the same letter that is published above…the one that was carbon copied to them by UEFA, and ask them for their thoughts…

Right, I suppose I’d better go and do the full article on this…

How can a country that has asperations to be Independant allow a mainstream media to operate like this? they MUST be aware that the level of lying and corruption exists,as for our National Broadcaster a Corporation that we pay for, well its just hunbelievable.
When the tic. play, they play not just against 11 players they play against 3 officialls and Thomson is the worst of the lot,the stats do not lye.

Supposedly Grant Russell from STV has published on Twitter the full press release from UEFA which omits the new club details !!! Think the Herald have also confirmed this which is a worry in itself as to why UEFA would leave it out of their press release.
However the SMSM would no doubt be aware of the full contents of the actual letter but will hide behind the official press release.

Wouldn’t that mean we can’t do our annual jolly to the US, or play in the UK for that matter?

I usually go to the away European games but won’t be going to this one as I won’t give the Israeli regime my money in line with the BDS movement.

I don’t think there’s any mass movement to not play games in Israel similar to South Africa so think any boycott of ours would be divisive.

There is a campaign to get Israel kicked out of FIFA for killing, imprisoning, blockading, bombing grounds etc of Palestinian football and, I think, people should get behind this instead.

Ralph

Great read today.

One thing struck me. Even though UEFA have called THEM a new club/company, they still will not just state outright in simple language THEY are A DIFFERENT club/company. When will these people ever stop their bush talk. It is the same with the “politics” thing. On the one hand they promote “RESPECT” and on the other impose fines or even worse for those who even hint at something they do not like to hear or see. Or is it simply a power thing? I have a new acronym for the organisation HYPOCRITES. As for any consequences from their “strong worded” letter? It will rot in the in-trays of the SFA and the SMSM until someone decides to archive its tattered remains in a glass case at the foot of the marble staircase for “fans” of “rangers” No25 to ogle as their disillusion is continued. Or maybe there is a God.

I confess I too have been somewhat hypocritical. I argued against jeopardising the future of the club with a flag or banner protest. In doing so I thought I was being wise – “Wisdom is a deep understanding and realisation of people, things, events or situations, resulting in the ability to apply perceptions, judgements and actions in keeping with this understanding. It often requires control of one’s emotional reactions (the “passions”) so that universal principles, reason and knowledge prevail to determine one’s actions. Wisdom is also the comprehension of what is true coupled with optimum judgement as to action.” But I was wrong. I am ashamed that I compromised my principles for the sake of a football club and progress in a competition. As several people pointed out, some things in life are bigger than even Celtic and committing to principles, no matter the cost, is not a betrayal of club or supporters but an essential and acceptable sacrifice. Having said that, I do feel this part of the above definition has its place in anything we decide to do, “It often requires control of one’s emotional reactions (the “passions”) so that universal principles, reason and knowledge prevail to determine one’s actions”. For me, it is only circumspect to weigh up situations and options before making decisions. That is why I took a stance against those who immediately dived headlong into a display of flags and banners protest. In hindsight – and hopefully by putting into practice the words of the above definition – my initial instincts were wrong and even before the game, I had decided in favour of the “protests”. I am heartily sorry and ashamed for having initially thought differently. It is only to be hoped we continue to “flex our muscles”, with discretion but never with compromise, on behalf of all oppressed and persecuted people.

Perhaps too there is a solid argument for the club to move this forward. It could do two things. First, it could make a statement of support for the fans by stating they acted within the spirit and ethos of the club to stand up for the underdog. Secondly, it could challenge UEFA if any punishment is handed out. After all, their actions are hypocritical as I mentioned above and there is a fundamental question of freedom of expression. What in God’s name gives this organisation the power and authority to make rules/laws that infringe upon basic human rights? I think this is an argument that could be developed at greater length and perhaps needs to be so that football authorities know their limits and their places. The notion of Celtic refusing to lay specific games for the sake of its principles is perhaps not as far-fetched or unrealistic as it first sounds but we fans would have to accept what could be extremely difficult, if not terminal, consequences.

I was not able to comment for several days as my good lady damaged her back – carrying me all these years, no doubt. I have had to do my family doctor bit to keep her happy and that has curtailed my free time. She is on the mend but now I have a family bereavement and will be in Scotland from Wednesday for the funeral. It may be next week before I get the chance to comment again. I just hope I can still do it with a big smile after tomorrow.

When I get back, Ralph, I will email you – early next week probably as I would like to spend a bit of time with family while I have the chance before coming home or being thrown out more likely.

Monti, very nervous, this is going to be a match where all our hopes and dreams are carried for the season.
Problem we have is our best defence is our attack.
But with the heat etc the home crowd, and probably the team will not have got much sleep.
Do we stick or twist.
I hope someone tells the players to play in the hoops, for a black strip attracting all the heat would be stupidity at worst.
This team will be much better at home, they themselves are capable of scoring 3 goals but we must score ourselves.
For me we should set up offensively, for the first half, they are slow starters in their games and get better as the game goes on.
We need players who can pass and retain possession.
If we can get an early goal we will make it very difficult for them.
But of course so it applies to them. But I would play with the all of them on the park Griff Dembele Rogic Sinclair Forrest. Build the side around them, for they are our match winners.
Can Brendan deliver of course he can.

To return to the match for a minute. The ref will once again be very important. We got a good one ladt time.

This time it is Bas Nijhuis from the Netherlands. He is very experienced, having handled 67 international matches. He tends to book the away team more than the home team. He gives out a penalty in rough one out of every five games, with 7 out of 12 going to the home team. His record on red cards is similar…..about 1 in every 5 games. His average on yellows is about 4 per game, with slightly more going to the away team.

Hos stats suggest he is fairly balanced. It looks like he has never ref’d an Israeli team before.

Monti, I’m a bundle of nerves as well. I know we can do it and probably will, but the last two matches at 3-0 then quickly 3-2 leave me worrying. Also, referees can play a part: red cards, handballs, penalties. The heat. The fat lady hasn’t sung yet but I think she is warmning up and she has on a size XXXXL (or FE, “feckin enormous”) Celtic strip! I think though we will score one or two and that should put it beyond their reach. But aye man, I’m nervous and my guts are rumblin.

I posted some info on the ref for tomorrow but it has vanished. Here is more info which hopefully you will be able to see.
Bas Nijhuis is our ref and he stirred some controversy by sending off the Alkmaar keeper for defending himself when attacked by a spectator. The Alkmaar team walked off in protest.

Let us hope ne Israeli fans attack our keeper!

Here is a repost of the info on the ref:

He is Dutch, never ref’d a match involving an Israeli team.
Gives about 4 yellows per game, with slightly more to the away team.
Gives one penalty ever five games, more likely to the home team.
Gives one red every five games.

He seems reasonably fair except to keepers.

All I’m thinking about is that when the whistle blows tomorrow at full-time Celtic will be in the Champions League proper and we’ll all be celebrating and eagerly awaiting the draw for the sections to see who we’ll get!!!
I cannae see us not scoring, and since our defense isnae totally comfortable yet I’ll go with 3-1 to Celtic.
Where I am the kick-off is at 3:45 pm…so less time to wait after getting up late!! lol

Bjf i replied to your post, but it must have gone out for a puff.
But agree with you,i think that the team that started on Saturday will be the team that starts tomorrow, with Janko dropped for Lustig, just to keep the momentom going.
Fingers crossed for that pot of gold, which will be most valuable to the club and team. H.H.
