Celtic Diary Saturday August 13: Either We Play Them, Or We Don’t

This whole Hapoel Be’er Sheva thing is getting on my nerves.

Its fairly simple. either we feel strongly enough about the situation in Palestine to withdraw from the competition, or we don’t. By playing them, we accept the rules of the tournament and decide that not waving flags is also part of a condition of entry, along with playing teams from the nation state of Israel.

We can’t have it both ways.

I’m not campaigning for a withdrawal, we entered the competition knowing that an Israeli team was involved, and therefore we accpeted the possibility that this might happen. But if the club should adopt a moral position and decide to pull out, then I’d support it.

But, of course, we know they won’t. This is the real world.

However, what we can do, as suggested earlier in the week, is light up our mobile phones, maybe at half time, and in song you can protest…

In order to get the point across, maybe “All We Are Saying Is Give Peace a Chance “, the John Lennon anthem, could make a valid point.

We won’t be fined, banned or have the stadium closed for that.

Celtic are out in Ireland today, thankfully theres no controversial issues there anymore, to face Italian Inter Milan, and despite the old Roman Empire occupying europe as recently as a couple of thousand years ago, they did give us roads and a few other things, so the game should go off quite peacefully.

It’s being held at Thomond Park, in Limerick, home of Angela’s Ashes author Frank McCourt, and hell raising actor Richard Harris, two guys who didn’t get on with each other, but since they are both dead it doesn;t really matter much to either of them any more.

Kick off is 19 00 hours, unfortunate for those who have clocks that only go up to twelve, and the game is live on Sky sports 2.

I don’t have Sky, I have  long since cancelled it to avoid paying for english teams to buy all our best players, and remove the level playing field within European football.

However, I do have a firestick with a kodi attachment that means I can watch it and not pay for it.

So fuck ’em.

Mediaset Premium are also showing the game live, whoever they are.

So, how are we doing in the International champions cup ?

Very well, if you look at the bank balance. so far the club will bank a reported/rumoured £7.5m, or to illustrate this in real terms,

So Partcik boss alan Archibald, who  moaned about Celtics participation, can put that in his pipe and stick it where the sun doesn;t shine, a glorious mixed metaphor if ever there was one.

He said:

“I think it’s disrespectful to the rest of the teams and it makes the league look poor.

“I don’t think it happens anywhere else that I’m aware of.

“I do think it’s a bit farcical whoever it happens to, it’s not great to have a weekend off, but it’s happened to us again.

“It would be better if we were all playing every Saturday, and it gives other teams a chance to catch back up with us.

I’m not saying that we were going to go and beat Celtic, but who is to say that we weren’t going to go and do it?

“I think and certainly hope that they address it soon, it’s just something we need to deal with though and it’s for the powers that be to deal with it.”

Who is to say Partick weren’t going to beat Celtic ? Pretty much everyone, I would have thought.

Anyway, he should be glad of the weekend off, its going to take him that long to pick all his toys up and put them back into his pram.

The game itself won’t feature any of the players from Wednesdays defeat of Motherwell, and the others are included to kep their match fitness at the highest possible level. As you can see in this video, those not included in the trip didnt train yesterday either.

Though you can’t see them not training, because, er, they’re not training.

Celtic training video

Can you pick an eleven featruing no players from Wednesday ? Right back would be a problem, but the side would include Griffiths, Biton, Johansen, Toure, Tierney , Ciftci, Armstrong and possibly even Commons…

Transfer stories, apart from Schweinsteiger ?

Dorus de Vries has had a medical, and at thirty five it probably took longer than most, but should also help him get life insurance and the free pen you get just for asking off that Michael Parkinson fellow.

He’s expected to give Craig Gordon competition for the number one shirt.

Stefan Johansens on off move to Galatasaray could be back on again, unless the club refuses to deal with the Turks on account of the military coup and subsequent oppression over there. Officials from Gala are reportedly flying to Glasgow for talks.

And Torino are after Jozo Simunovic, presumably to test their new state of the art medical centre, and are prepared to pay £4.5m for him. Or they aren’t. Simunovic says he’s heard nothing, but then again he’s probably got a great big bandage on his head, having hurt himself at the haircut shop.

Meanwhile, James Forrest, who has signed a new deal this week, spoke of why he signed…and his first phone call from new manager Brendan Rodgers..

‘We were due back in a couple of weeks’ time – I was here when I got the call,  ‘He said he’d seen me play before and liked the way I’d played.

‘It was obviously good to hear (him say that) as I knew I’d only six months left on my contract. He just said that pre-season was going to be hard so to come back in good shape and to show him what I had.

‘Basically it was a clean slate so I knew I was going to get my chance to at least show what I could do. If it didn’t work out it didn’t work out. But I’m glad I’m staying here. That’s what I was wanting to do.

‘As soon as I came back I said I wanted to stay and I’m glad that six or seven weeks on we’ve got it done.’

Forrest also went on to mention those who questioned his loyalty, after it was falsely reported he had turned down a new deal. Diary readers, of course, know better..

‘It’s hard – it wasn’t nice then, ‘Folk have maybe read things and think that’s what happened but I knew different myself and was obviously hoping I’d get a chance to show that I wanted to be here.

‘That’s the thing – there were always rumours but I never said I wanted to leave the club. People close to me and inside the club knew that as well.

‘We can all read stuff but I never had it in my head that it was definitely done and I was definitely away. I knew in April that there was going to be a new manager and I was kind of hoping then that when he was in there was going to be a clean slate and I could show him what I could do and I am just glad that happened.

‘I told the manager that as soon as he came in that I wanted to stay. I’ve never said anything different. I knew I’d get my chance to show everyone and I feel I’ve done that this pre-season.’

Anyway, now that his contract is all done and dusted, he can get on with what he does best.

Shame on you if you thought I was going to finish this sentence with the words “getting injured “.

Chris Sutton, who has the ability to irritate and delight in equal measure when he speaks, has come away with a belter of a statement in his column today;

One minute there is Dave King saying Rangers should be up challenging for the title. The next it’s Warburton trying to talk down their expectations.

I’m not saying there is disharmony in the camp but they are hardly singing from the same hymn sheet.

It conjures up a wonderful image of the two men, standing side by side on a summer sunday morning, the sun streaming through the cloured  leaded windows of a chapel nudging each other as they sing along to hymn number 1690.

Simply delightful.

Fair play to Sutton. He said a lot of things about Celtic, and doesn;t seem to be bothered about ishing it out to “rangers ” .

There are very few in the media who have a go at both sides in equal measure.

Which brings me to an apology.

I have to apologise to andy Walker, former Celtic player turned tv football expert, who really should have been in contention for Knob of The Week yesterday, but lost out due to the consistency of Robbie Neilsen.

Walker had given his own opinions on the Jamie Walker incident, and like everyone else, he’s entitled to them. As ridiculous as they are.

…Brown’s comments were immature and thoughtless. Adopting the moral high ground is a dangerous stance to take on incidents like this.

So when someone cheats, its “dangerous” to point it out ?

Probably explains the media stance on a recent financial scandal and subsequent fraudulent claim about a club coming out of liquidation…

“Will Brown label a Celtic or Scotland team-mate a cheat when one of them is guilty of a debatable foul/penalty later in the season?

Probably not. Thats called “grassing “

It was left to Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers to bring a more calm and measured response to the incident when he chose to praise the referee for admitting his mistake.

“Having previously worked with Luis Suarez, he will realise that footballers can get the benefit of certain decisions with clever play that others in the game find infuriating.”

It’s not “clever “. It’s cheating.

So, heartfelt apologies to Walker, you didn’t win Knob of the Week this week, but the potential is there for future success. Keep working on it, keep doing what you’re doing, and no doubt before long you will join a list of dedicated professionals who are at the top of their profession, and sometimes don;t get the full recognition for their actions.

And know what, I’m sure you’ll get there one day.

Perhaps we could have a ‘bitter bhoy of the week’ award? However, oor Andy and possibly Craig Burley would be the only contenders. Personally, I like Sutton, he speaks like a fan and I agree with most of what he says. Also, I love his disgruntled expression when Craigan starts opening his mouth.

1. Play the game. Take the money. Say nothing, after all haven’t we craved CL football these last few seasons?
2. Pull out entirely. Make political point. But didn’t we crave CL football?
3. Play game. Make protest. Feel good about protest. Possibly kicked out of the CL that we have longed for.
4. Play the game. Enjoy the CL football that we’ve craved. Box clever with a protest that doesn’t contravene UEFA rules.

These are some of the options, not all of them as the list could be endless. Don’t engage in a protest blindfolded. Be aware of what the consequences are i.e. possible loss of CL participation.

To some that is a price worth paying. To others that is many steps too far. We are a football club. We support Celtic in our many different ways, but I think we’re all united in not wanting to harm Celtic. There’s enough in scotland whose only mission is to harm Celtic.

DON’T DO THEIR JON FOR THEM.

Box clever. Support Celtic. We should all get on the one road. Keep the faith.

IMHO, something should be done that shows our support. But that something should never, ever harm our Club.

Ralph, I really enjoy reading your diary. It’s always a great lift to the day. But, there are still “controversial issues” in Ireland. Namely divided country, occupied starlet, orange triumphalist walks with lambeg drums and gerrymandered electorate just to mention a few. But one mans harmony is another mans contentious issues!

It’s Saturday, it’s great being a Celt, let’s have debate. But don’t ever harm Celtic. That should never happen whether intentionally or otherwise.

Be careful what you wish for, it might come true.

Hail, hail

Have to be honest and say I can understand where Alan Archibald is coming from. From my point of view anyway, I’d want to be going along to Celtic Park today especially after what we witnessed on Wednesday night. Instead I’m doing a shift at work as I’ve not got any interest at all in a meaningless friendly. I know financially it’s what we have to do nowadays but as our season appeared to be really getting going, again we have to pause for what seems like a hindrance today

People should protest if that’s what their conscience dictates.

The only protest that matters is inside the stadium and involving the Palestinian flag etc. Anything else will be ignored and will be self-defeating.

Any attempts to dilute this are akin to those that want to hijack the Glasgow memorial to An Gorta Mór for other purposes.

Any punishment should have no bearing on a decision of conscience but the only likely one is a small fine and that only because our board refuses to stand up to this hypocrisy unlike a true ‘more than a club’ Barcelona.

Talk of closed stadium, bans etc. are the dishonest, desperate actions of those that oppose any support for Palestine.

Brother Walfrid would have approved of people of conscience.

Reply to  The Cha

Cha

But I doubt the good brother would have gotten his football club inveigled in political grandstanding. Each to his own but those delicate consciences should remember a consequence of their actions will be hurting others which is the very reason for their protest. Or is it, I get my way and damned be the consequences? By the way, if we take your high moral ground then we would practically play no one either at home or abroad. There are injustices to be found in every country, not just Israel. Some of the worst are in our own shores, so where do we go from here, pub football?

Seriously, you equate, potentially, a small fine for Celtic with the horrors of occupation of Palestine and objecting to this is “political grandstanding” for those with “delicate consciences”?

The same spurious arguments that were used to prop up Apartheid “what about…”. Thankfully a lot of people didn’t fall for that and its now gone and not due to the inactions of whataboutery.

If there’s anything you protest then bring it to the table and suggest a course of action otherwise it’s just a deceitful excuse to do nothing.

Walfrid didn’t start a football team for sporting reasons he did it to feed the poor and I doubt he’d stand idly by when confronted by the suffering of the Palestinian people.

WTF!!
What utter drivel!
We,as Celtic fans do have a conscience that’s not in dispute.
What we shouldn’t have is the arrogance to believe we can change the political stance of government.Flying a few Palestinian flags, wow, that will show them!
I understand and respect your opinion,(even though it’s drivel)but a football match at Celtic Park is not the place to show support for a foreign people.Where does it end?Syria,Afghanistan Iraq? How about social injustice in Brazil? The aborigonal folk in Australia?
Personally,I’ve been to Israel a couple of times, lived and worked with both communities, and left there fully understanding the injustices suffered by the indigenous population.
So,’the Cha’,make your protest, pretend that you making a difference, nobodies listening or watching that gives a fuck except maybe UEFA who could impose sanctions on us.
Just another keyboard warrior I expect.Full of morals and indignation, but nothing tangible to offer.

Ralph,

Utopia is a dream world conjured from the imagination of a saintly man who wanted nothing but peace and harmony throughout the earth. I think he genuinely believed it could happen through the power of God but knew in his heart of hearts it would be scuppered by the nature of man. It is a world where what we wish for bears no relation to what we do and thus becomes an illusion. What we do is rarely in sync with what we believe. Thus would it be on Wednesday next if we hold any illegal protests. Not one but two dreams will be shattered by our actions. Our dream of justice in the world, particularly in Palestine, because our protests would prove ineffectual if not harmful and our dream of progressing to the next stage of the CL because we would probably be booted out for blatantly and persistently defying UEFA rules. I ask those who see nothing naïve about banner, flag or song protests if it makes any sense to take part in a jousting match with your hands tied behind your backs and a feather duster flailing under your armpit? Believe me UEFA have the sharp lances and have bound our hands inescapably, “UEFA deem the Palestine flag a political symbol because the conflict with Israeli forces in the region is still ongoing.” A UEFA spokesman said: “Celtic and St Johnstone were sanctioned for infringement of Article 16 (2) (e).” This article states ““The use of gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports event, particularly messages that are of a political, ideological, religious or provocative nature will not be tolerated.” Under these regulations we are not only hog-tied but silenced and like it or lump, as Ralph says, if we are to participate, then we shall obey. Sometimes silence is much more powerful than volumes of words or energised actions and though we may deem it a soft option, Celtic Park on a CL night in deathly silence would, I believe, make most people sit up and think. Of course, there could be no adverse consequences given it would be impossible to label the silence with a political tag. Just my final thoughts on a protest.

May I just add that in all of this, I am as ardent an opponent of any suppression, domination, subjugation, violence or injustice in any part of the world as any man. Perhaps I have lost some of the energy of youth but I have not compromised my principles. Having said that, I do think the years have somewhat tempered my recklessness and now I tend to dip the old toe before diving headlong into the torrent. I sincerely pray that balance and common sense prevail on Wednesday and that we can progress with confidence and with pride without any harmful consequences hanging over us. If we want to make the defeat of Hapoel Be’er Sheva a symbol of our support for Palestine, then let us do it while keeping our own counsel. Just be mindful of the fact that there are Palestinian players who will be part of that team and ask yourself if you are making a sound judgement. In the end, however, it has to be each to his/her own.

Recent Dairies have seen some intensity among its followers, Ralph, and even though one wonders if there is more bluster than blunderbuss, the debating has been really enjoyable. Some have commented on it being uplifting to read supporters commenting about social and political injustices. It is heartening to know our support has not lost its sensitive conscience. It is also enlightening for me to witness the rashness of my youth expressed in some comments and suggestions and I have enjoyed the mouthing off with a wry smile on my wrinkled cheeks.

Tonight has to about a bit of fun. It is also an occasion when, on a neutral ground, the superstar Latinos of Milan are expected to annihilate the peasants of Glasgow’s East End. I recall a similar situation some time back and have no qualms about indulging in the pleasurable outcome. Could the same circumstances presage a similar result? No matter what, I will enjoy the re-match – except I just remembered in it my favourite channel CTV!!!!!!

Whatever way that you look at it,Ralphs picture showing the rapid encroatchment of Isreals territorial gains is very evuocative.
My auld da was stationed in Palestine, sent there after world war two,he served there from 45 till 48.He came home to my mum and well i appeared some 10 months later (i checked). I do not know so will not comment on the rights or wrongs of the political situation then or now,but am very aware what has happened then and since.
Intersestingly from the armys point of view, the Isrealie freedom fighters then (Ben Gurian et all) were decried as terrorists by the British. In there minds they considered themselves as patriots, they long held the view that, that land belonged to them.
Since then we are all aware of whats gone on,the stealing of water rights, the settlements and the subjugation of the Palistinian people.
Its no wonder why our sympythies lye with them, its very gratifying that our support are angry about it and knowledgeable and and hope that matters can be settled,as calemero said its an injustice, but there are many injusticices, where do we start, where does it end.We have suffered injustice our fathers have suffered injustices, its not however the clubs fault,so why involve them?

One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter.the point im making above is that when, they the Isrealis landed on the beaches of Palestine, the British called them Terrorists the Israelies considered themselves like the Irish to be Freedom Fighters. Its only what happened afterwards with American and British assistance, that the once Holacostel victims became the oppressors of the Palestinian people and IMHO the same as what had once been there oppressors.
In no sense am i condoning there oppression, just trying to understand the situation.

By fucking UEFA you are fucking Celtic, let those who wish to participate by protesting pay the consequences.
Its there anger, why should the club, open to all,pay for the supporters anger.
I get angry at many things, but i dont ask my club to take the consequences of my anger and to pay for it.
