The Moral Dimension: Palestine

Observing social media this evening it appears the issue of protesting against Israeli occupation of Palestine is still high on the agenda.

As Celtic supporters there is a feeling that we have to do something, we have to make our voices heard.

Something must be done to alleviate the pain and suffering, or at least to show empathy with the beleagured nation currently being raped and pillaged by the state of Israel.

After all, part of being a Celtic supporter is fighting against injustice.

Taking on the battle of the underdog.

Do we wave their flag at the game ?

Do we risk punishment from UEFA, whose articles forbid political protest ?

No.

It’s ย not enough.

If , as a support, we are serious about this, then we must achieve maximum worldwode publicity. We musy shake the very founf=dations at UEFA headquarters.

We must simply withdraw from the competition.

We must let the world know why.

Celtic should not take part in a competition which features a nation that is persecuting another.

No half measures. no risking a fine or a ban.

If we feel strongly enough about it, as a club, and as a support, then we pull out on monday morning.

If its publicity for their cause, that ought to do it.

At least then we can hold our heads high, and say we refused to condone the admission to civilisation that the nation state of Israel should be denied.

Sure, Celtic lead the protests against the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 69, which led to the withdrawal of Eastern bloc countries.

Now id the time to make another stand, now is the time when we can make our voices heard worldwide.

Tell UEFA where to stick their money.

We don;t want to be a part of it.

It may not make a difference to the every day existence of Palestinians, but no-one could then doubt our sincerity.

And they would know that someone out there cares.

Then we would truly be a club like no other.

And it just might make a difference.

Ralph,

I must correct myself in my previous comment. I had forgotten about the Czech invasion which I would find it hard to not call political intervention. However, it does not take away from the basic premise that Wilfrid did not found Celtic to be a political mouthpiece. However, I am certain he would not have disagreed with your current suggestion. Now there is a challenge for the banner carriers. I would be all for a stance that would shame UEFA, FIFA and all the other governing bodies who put the cash cow before justice and humanity, one that would be effective, be seen and could not be ignored. The question is, how many are prepared to face the challenge and make the sacrifice?

Great argument!

Ralph, emotion runs at exceptionally high levels when decent people consider the illegal acts of Israel on its neighbour, Palestine.
Let’s remember the Holocaust; let’s ponder how the victims’ families of the Holocaust can enact a similar war on impoverished, almost friendless people: the Jews begged for help, as one would expect and then they got help. What of Palestinians? Where the fuck is decency today. Wrapped up in Israeli controlled western de-fucking-mocracy.
Time for change.
Most Tims, if not Socio/Communist are, at least, in favour of Justice: NOT LAW. Laws are made by tory bastards for tory bastards’ benefit. They’re (tory bastards) living on borrowed time.

For those of you who are hard of understanding; Israel, a creation, in 1947, of tory bastards from Europe and the USA has RAPED and pillaged the previous country called Palestine; the Holy Land. Why the fuck does modern wetern ‘civilisation’ allow the daily persecution of Palestinians whilst backing Israel in every way. Why INDEED?
I’m far too fucking annoyed to continue….but, every dog has its day; Israel, beware.

I’m sorry but I support a football club, not a political movement. I full respect people’s right to democratically protest against something they believe is fundimentallu wrong.

In saying the above we will get hammered by UEFA if one person decides that they are bigger than the club and goes against what the club has asked for. This could include banning us from the competition, a competition that we have sorely missed during the Deila years.

Make your protests but do so without bringin the club down. Wrote to your MP’s or MSP’s or whatever you want to do, but leave out club out of it.

It’s not a political instrument to vent your anger. It’s our Football club.

Think about the majority before you act.

My opinion, which seems to be shared by many on here, if not you, is if you feel that strongly about it, why wait until our football club is drawn to play an Israeli team? Go do something about it, speak to your MP, start a petition, petition our club if you think it will help, but don’t cheaply and selfishly wave a flag and fuck it up for the rest of us.

We were taking part in a competition that included Hapa in the last two rounds. didn’t hear many people calling for a boycott then. All the talk was how we must make the group stages. If you want to criticise then at least be consistent. Basically that means we should refuse to play European football. I think I’m correct in saying that UEFA can only mete out punishment for acts that take place within the stadium and its immediate environs, so if anybody feels the need to protest, why not do it near the fan zone in the city centre, or the route the Israeli fans will take to the stadium?

Come on…would not register on the world platform. We’re not the United nations.

Scott

I’m all for protesting in solidarity with Palestine but this totally oversteps the mark.

Firstly, we’ve happily taken part in European competition during Russia’s occupation of Crimea. Picking and choosing when to gaze out from the high-horse serves the argument that such protests are born of antisemitism.

Secondly, what of Nir Bitton? Thinking of him paints the complicated picture well. He is an Israeli Jew, but no Celtic fan should wish his contract be terminated because he hails this nation that sustains an oppressive/apartheid system.

Nir Bitton is not the perpetrator of war crimes against Palestine, neither are Hapeol Be’ersheva. It’s possible to be an Israeli-Jew who condemns human rights abuses in Palestine, so lashing out individuals or organisations who have nothing to do with the occupied territories is sheer ignorance.

I would wave a Palestinian flag at Celtic Park if I could be there next week, I would chant the nation’s name, I would condone holding a minutes silence in the 67th minute, anything to raise awareness and draw attention to the situation. But lashing out at all things Israel is not the way.

Please define my “vile and unsubstantiated opinions” and , especially, what you find vile and unsubstantiated about them.

I mentioned elsewhere; please do not confuse all Israelis as being the same. They are not the same. Hapoel (the working class) are diametrically opposite the Jewish State, just as all Tims should be against the UK Establishment.
The establishment bastards hang onto ‘the rule of law’ as being sacrosanct; no fucking wonder, that’s how they’re protected, not JUSTICE, LAW. Laws made up by them to fit their ownership of the land and all means of production.

I’ll put this mildly. I’m disappointed by the politicisation of Celtic by small but noisy elements of the support. Before I give my view I’ll qualify by saying this. I’ve been to Celtic games for 36 seasons. I’ve worked in the Middle East for nearly a decade first in Arab countries then in Israel. I count Jewish people are Arab people (in Israel as mutual friends).

The Be’er team is mixed, the support is mixed and you know what, they get on.

I could go on about the conflict and turn the other side of the coin but then I too would be getting political on a football site so will refrain but here is a suggestion.

Celtic supports should support the unity within the Be’er team and its support as an example of how it should be; working and playing together because, at end of day, it is peaceful coexistence that will win the day in that region.

The thought of taking sides, of protesting, is not wise and will embarrass the very folks (in that team) that the Celtic support thinks it is supporting.

Why would anyone fly a Palestinian flag at Celtic’s most important game of this season so far? Presumably to highlight perceived injustice. So those supporting this action are out to highlight injustice, to champion human rights.

In the last round we eliminated Astana from Kazackstan. I do not recall any protests with respect to this opponent. And yet, there are planty of issues in their country. Currently there are riots involving people seeking social justice and greater freedom from a reportedly tyrannical despot who rules the country. Recently, 1000 people were arrested protesting against a variety of restrictions on freedom, plus extending land acquisition and retention rights for foreigners, particularly the Chinese. Many of these arrests and protests were held in Astana, bately one month ago. Where were the calls for protesting against loss of freedom in Kazackstan as we played their champions? Are Kazacks less worthy of support than Palestinians? Why no flags or are we simply selective in terms of which cause we support? Are we a club open to all but only to certain causes that some support but not to others that some prefer to support by means other than running the club into expense? The point is that Celtic is not a vehicle for solving injustice in this world. It has neither the capacity nor the means to do so.
By all means support those causes dear to your heart but remember that there are many other causes that have equal merit that, if supported by flying flags, would seriously hurt our club. Do not be so arrogant to suggest that your cause is the only one that should be supported through a subsidy from our club(the fine). Find another way of fighting your cause, and find one that consists of more commitment than flying a flag for ninety minutes once in a blue moon.

Wow, light the blue touch paper and step away. So much angst and caring is impressive and so many well argued points. Sadly some accusing others of being Huns, once yo do that mate you’ve lost the argument and it is insulting and demeaning. We are an inclusive club and as such have fans of many different persuasions, beliefs and stances. So why this issue and why demonstrate? Why not state at the start we won’t play any Israeli team, and throw in Rissian tea,s for what they’re doing to poor fascist Ukraine, oh and don’t go to play in the US because their cops are shooting blacks etc etc. Ok a bit silly and childish? Well maybe not. Some want to pick their issue while the world is going to hell in a hand cart. If you want to demonstrate get out marching, join and raise money for Free Palestine organisations then demonstrate outside the ground. Then try something for a change. Go into the ground and support the bloody team.

When Jesse Owens and Ralph Metcalfe wanted to challenge Nazi racism in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin they did it in the most unforgettable way: they beat the Aryan supermen in the stadium. Same here. Protest outside the stadium and then put five past them on the pitch. Kazakstan is a total state allowing no basic human freedoms. Silence. A lot of you admired the homophobe Che Guevara and go on groovy salsa holidays to one-party state Cuba. Silence. Putin’s Russia kills 16,000 women a year in domestic violence, and a great number of journalists and gay people. Silence.Cherry-picking morality is not very attractive. I call it hypocrisy. Protest however we can but we must play the game or just close down shop. How pure do we think we all are? We support a footall club for christsake…

Fair play, but I don’t see one ounce of sense in it.

Nothing which will advance the plight of the Palestinians, nothing which will be beneficial to our club.

I was first-just-to point out the potential pitfalls of this tie on another site. Dallas will have everyone primed. So will the SMSM.

Remember our first UEFA fine for “illicit singing”v Rennes? I was right next to the GB with my Dad and his bro. Each knows the songbook back to front, they’re in their 70s and founded Ardrossan Garryowen CSC. They go ballistic at certain songs of our heritage being sung outside the pub,the house,or the bus.

That night, they would have noticed it. My Uncle Jim in particular, the growler.

Point is,the board set us up on that one. Reported by a friendly copper. Meant to teach us a lesson. The verdict could have been successfully appealed by a five-year-old.

We didn’t. Our crimesheet is progressing exponentially.

And you suggest really giving the corrupt entity a reason to give us a kicking?

Montaefuck,Ralph. This is ยฃ30m and a chance to get the Huns so far behind us they aren’t in the same game.

And you want to play student politics

Sorry, mate. I love your site. I love much of your input. But you are wrong on this. When a tree falls in the forest and no-one is there, does it make a sound? When people protest and no-one gives a f..k,does it matter?

When people protest and only harm themselves, that can make a difference. Think of Tunisia.

But our only footnote in history by following your suggestion will be unremitting laughter and no improvements for the Palestinians.
