Celtic Diary Monday August 8: Off And Running

And it appears we are all running in the same direction. Which is a pleasant change.

Celtic rounded off the weekends Premiership-couldn’t they have thought of a better, more original name?-with a 2-1 win over at Tynecastle, despite the efforts of John Beaton, easily the Edinburgh sides best performer.

Although he was listed as referee in the match programme, his efforts to give the Jambos a winning start cannot go unrecorded, especially the penalty that levelled the game and gave Hearts hope of coming away with something. Looks like referees will feature quite strongly in Knob of the Week nominations, so we might have to give them their very own award. Honest mistake of the Week, or something.

There will no doubt be some tough competition.

In fact, lets do that, and see who dominates as the season goes on. when the original Rangers died, circumstances would show that we weren’t paranoid enough, so lets be as paranoid as we can from the off as the new club arrives on the scene.

So, John Beaton, congratulations, your award of a penalty for this wonderful little pirouette from Hearts’s Jamie Walker

makes you the winner of the inaugural Etims

Honest Mistake Of The Week.

Shifty looking fellow, isn’t he ?

Beaton is no stranger to controversy, and has been known to upset players before with his own interpretation of the rules….as World coccer magazine explains..

Scottish referee John Beaton says that he would not be dissuaded from refereeing in Saudi Arabia again, despite overseeing a tumultuous league decider between Al Hilal and Al Nasr, which culminated in him being headbutted by one of the players.

The match ended with Al Nasr winning 1-0 but their opponents reduced to eight men, with Beaton handing out the final card to Salem Al Dawsari for head-butting the referee.

Beaton spoke to the Scottish FA, describing the match and in particular how he dealt with the intimdation.

“It’s safe to say this kind of thing has never happened before and I’m sure many referees have gone through entire careers without something like that to deal with,” he said.

“More than anything, I’m happy that I handled it the right way because it’s something that comes as a complete surprise and you can’t really prepare for an incident like that. The important thing in these situations is to keep calm, make the correct decision – which was to issue a red card – and then resume the match.”

Beaton revealed he and his fellow officials team were escorted off the pitch by extra security personnel, but he commended the Saudi authorities for the way in which they dealt with the situation.

“It sounds more dramatic than it was but we had about 10 security guards lead us off the pitch, all wearing standard-issue suits and ties and radios,” he admitted.

“I have to say, though, that for all the tension during the game – and you have to factor in that this was effectively a title decider between two teams who have a history of intense rivalry – there were zero issues afterwards.

“The Saudi Arabia Football Federation could not have done any more to make us feel safer on the way back to the hotel and then the airport.”

James Forrest opened the scoring for Celtic, winning the ball in his own half, laying it off to Calum MacGregor and then collecting a return before placing a curling shot beyond the Hearts keeper, and for much of the match, Celtic were in control. Well, oif you don’t count Beaton taking cotrol for a moment when he awarded a penalty that at best was soft, and at worst blatant cheating.

It was certainly cheating from Walker, who suffered no contact at all from Keiran Tierney, who simply took the ball away, and given the referees view of the incident, one can only assume that Beaton isn’t capable of refereeing at this level, at least not until he spends a couple of days familiarising himself with the rules.

Another way of looking at the incident came from Sky tv pundit Neil McCann, who curiously didn;t hound Walker the way he-and others-hounded Derk Boerrigter for a similar instance of simulation last year… he claimed that Walker was expecting contact, which is why he went down. When questioned further, and asked to explain what the fuck he was talking about, McCann went into default mode, and began drooling uncontrollably…

“I though Joey Barton had an excellent game,”

“He grew into the match and was crucial in Rangers equaliser. I don’t think he’s up to full speed just yet, but Rangers need this type of player with drive and aggression. He dictated the play.”

Celtics captain Scott Brown was a little more forthright…

“It is brilliant how well he dives. He is really good at that. He should have been in Rio.

“It was a dive. Cheat. What else can you say?

“The referee came out at half-time and said he got it completely wrong. He made the decision, he hasn’t seen it and the linesman’s not puts his flag up.

“It was always a hard game when you come here, a great atmosphere and you expect a hard challenge like they gave us.

“They tried to play football and mix it up, as well. Hearts are great at that, but sometimes there is no place in football for cheats and that’s been a couple of times here now.”

Walker attempted to justify himself…

“I knocked the ball on and I’ve seen him (Kieran Tierney) coming out the corner of my eye and felt contact, so I went down. At the end of the day, I am not the referee, I don’t give the decisions.”

At least have the balls to admit it.

Kenny Clark, a former referee available for after dinner speaking and quotes on any subject you like, defended his soul mate..

“John Beaton apologised to Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers for the penalty he awarded Hearts yesterday.

“Credit to the referee for doing that and admitting he made the wrong call but the Jambos’ Jamie Walker is the one who should be saying sorry.

“By the looks of it, he went down without any contact and should be ashamed of himself.

“People talk about referees needing help — more mics, more TV cameras, more replays.

Yet what about help from the players? When you see Walker’s antics yesterday, what chance does a referee have?

“Beaton had one angle of the incident and made a judgement call. He felt there was contact and he gave a penalty.

“After the benefit of several replays, there is general agreement that Walker wasn’t touched.”

He was standing around ten feet from the incident, and he had a clear view of it. There can be no excuses.

Anyhoo, now thats out in the open, we await with interest the decision from the beaks regarding a two game ban for cheating…..

Hearts enjoyed a period of relative ascendency, but with only a few minutes left, Leigh Griffiths ran almost the full length of the pitch, and was still accelerating when he cut the ball across to allow substitute Scott Sinclair to score his first goal for Celtic, just hours after putting pen to paper on a deal with the club.

Which, happily, allows me an excuse to promote the portfolio of his wife Helen Flanagan, who will need to find work north of the border as well.

See, I’m doing my bit.

When sinclair scored, he almost became the second member of Celtic’s staff to be assaulted by a Hearts fan, as this chap took a swing at him as he ran past him…

I’m certain Hearts are already looking for him, and will be taking his season book off him.

Interestingly, the general consensus from the media seems to be that Celtic didn’t play well. That we were maybe a little fortunate to come away with all three points.

Craig Gordon , now beginning to get used to seeing familiar faces around him, played better as the game went on. sure, he made an arse of a cross that Tony Watt should have done better from, but he also made a few good saves.

Kolo Toure, who has that wonderful knack of being in the right place at the right time, has taken charge of the defence, and looks like he’s been there forever.

Scott Brown played like he used to, and perhaps now some of the pressure is off him to perform, then he will continue to perform at this level.

James Forrest had his best game in months, and its like signing  a new player, to quote some halfwit or other from the radio, but for me, the spirit of the side was summed up with Griffiths late run to feed Scott Sinclair for the winner.

Nothing had gone the strikers way previously, he had missed a few chances, but he never stopped working, never stopped running, and somehow , at that late stage of the game, found the extra bit of pace to get past the Hearts defenders to cross.

Significantly, we have around four, maybe even five or six candidates for man of the match, and a good case could be made for them all.

all this talk of winning and not playing well is nonsense. Celtic played very well yesterday, and if that is a sign of things to come, then I might just put a shiny pound on that elusive treble, which of course counts now as “rangers ” are back….

Speaking of the “rangers “, it didn’t go so well for them as they drew 1-1 at home with Hamilton. I didn;t see the game, and didn’t even know the result until later in the evening, but it wasn’t unexpected,  but it was a surprise to see that the BBC actually have a full page analysing his contribution to the match;

Joey Barton: Analysis of Rangers midfielder’s Scottish league debut

Kolo Toure, who has achieved considerably more in the game, didn’t get that sort of attention for his league debut. Why would this journeyman merit such elevated status ?

Oddly enough, the minute by minute report missed this incident out…

where he was nutmegged by the guy  Crawford, who from more objective accounts, dominated the midfield.

What was it Barton said about Scottish football ?

Next up for him is a trip to Dundee, and Paul Hartleys side currently top the league after their demoliiton of Ross County.

Hartley will be relishing the game, probably a lot more than any of his opponents;

Celtics next game is at home to Motherwell in the League cup, and then its off to Limerick for the final ICC game with Inter Milan before resuming the batttle for a Champions League place.

A repeat of the scoreline from the last game of last season would be nice….

The basis of a good side, with great spirit is emerging under Brendan Rodgers. Late goals are once again becoming a feture of the game, and there is a little bit of steel in the side now. Once upon a time, the players would have folded under adversity, but thats not happening any more.

The does seem to be a real reason for optimism…

Well, take what he said about Scott Sinclair, and his  prolonged move to Celtic;

Aston Villa didn’t really want to lose the player, but Scott made it clear he wanted to leave.

Why ?

To play for Rodgers again. Who must be doing something right….

I wonder….

Well, you never know.

One thing i do know is that this is not from the files over at Police Scotland, or is it ?

I’m glad you mentioned the prospect of action against the cheat Wa*ker. We need to be highlighting these cheats at every opportunity and putting pressure on the authorities to do something about it.

Also the attack on Sinclair must be pursued.

I think it is now time that the issue of proximity of Hearts thug fans to the playing field at Tynecastle is addressed before an opposing player or manager is seriously injured.

I would suggest removing several rows of seats, since the scum who inhabit the stands there have proven that they cannot be trusted to behave like reasonable himan beings.

Celtic has a duty of care to its players and must pursue this matter.

Hearts have proven themselves to be a bunch of cheats cluggers and cowardly thugs.

I await with bated breath Ann ( I’ve got an opinion on everything) Budge’s take on all of this.

“Scottish referee John Beaton says that he would not be dissuaded from refereeing in Saudi Arabia again, despite overseeing a tumultuous league decider between Al Hilal and Al Nasr, which culminated in him being headbutted by one of the players.” What surprises me of this is that the Suadi Chick Young wasn’t at the airport sending the ref home on that occasion.

Time for action to be taken against these thugs at Tynecastle, (the ones in the stands).

I would suggest removing several rows of seats and erecting a fence to keep these cowardly animals away from opposition players, since there is a real risk that someone will get seriously injured by these cretins.

Think calling out the ref is a bit harsh.
He booked all of their team, could have sent off Brown and Toure and let Forrest’s goal stand even though Armstrong was swinging his arms around like a helicopter in front of their keeper.
He got tricked by a cheating bassa.
HH

andybhoy

Reply to  Gringo

The ref was cheating. If he does not see the challenge or lack of a challenge, then he should not award a penalty. As for Forrest’s goal, yes Armstrong is in the keepers line of site and technically the goal should not have been awarded, but a penalty should have been awarded in the build up when McGregor got felled in the box.

Andybhoy, from where the ref was and how he saw it,I can understand why he gave it to be honest. From his view I would have been shouting for a pen if it was a Celtic player.
The goalkeeper has clear sight of the ball for Celtics goal,Armstrong although in an offside position, makes no movement to interfere with play,so the goal given correctly.
It was a good physical contest, and one which the players would have needed to get them that little bit more street wise.
Hearts will be a real threat with the front two they have.
Armstrong and McGregor are the weakest links in the team at present. Maybe now worth giving Christie and Ajer a wee go,in midweek to see how they do.
On Saturday in Ireland they should just play the reserves,Wed night will be far too important to worry about than Inter Milan.

I have been saying for a while that a group of referees or something more trustworthy should convene every Monday and hand out 1,3 or 5 match bands for bringing the game into disrepute through obvious cheating / diving etc. They cannot overrule referee decisions or the put come off a match, but may hand out supplemental bans and in extreme cases cancel them.

Was travelling back from my holidays on the sunny West coast of Ireland so could only listen to the game on the radio & saw extended highlights on You tube.
First, a really good result. Hearts were very up for it – 8 bookings? Does that bring a fine? Probably not if you’re playing Celtic at the time.
Second, Sinclair’s goal was a really good move, played at pace and with guys busting themselves to get onto the ball, some contrast to last year’s slow slow tempo.
I did a piece for the site after Red Imps away where I went through the squad and rated who should stay and who should go. I advocated not keeping Brown & Forrest, but I’ll happily change my mind if they continue to play at that level.
If Boerrigter was banned for two games for diving then the same should apply here, whether he was “expecting contact” or not. I’m not a big one on anti – Celtic conspiracies but the rules should be applied equally to all clubs – I know, I m a dreamer.
The signing of Sinclair is a very good one. He was great at Swansea and I think he has come here because he wants to play regularly and compete for trophies. His pace, touch and movement are good and I think he can re find the form that had him moving for big money to Man City before he lost his way. Plus the WAG section of Celtic Park has had an injection of quality. Insert own “I’d gie her a quality injection” jokes now
The signings have come slowly but are all logical, ready for the first team and not the gambles of the Delia period. We need to get some players out now in my view and I’d like to see if we can get a first team goalkeeper to push / replace Gordon, but otherwise the squad is starting to look good. An attacking four or Griffiths, Dembele, Roberts & Sinclair with Forrest pushing for a place has a good range of skills and balance about it. We will have mistakes in defence, no Rodgers team has been that watertight in defence but I think the team looks to have a lot more goals in it than last season, so I’m confident we’ll be entertained this year, which again will be a nice contrast to the football we saw last year. The truth is about to shock them when sevco are turned over by a few Premiership teams
Again the Billy Boys Club said it all with the new look Sportscene, what happened to Championship coverage or has that ceased to exist yet another statement of the hunbiased media coverage in this ‘great we’re ‘ country called Scotland.
Overall impressed with the team yesterday as Hearts played the bully boy game, looking forward to Joey facing them.

There’s an interesting post match interview with BR on YouTube where he explains:

1. He wants Forrest to stay and Forrest wants to stay so it’s just about contract details – clearly BR thinks he can bring the best out of Forrest. He says he’s discussed with him the need to add more goals to his game. These type of players need the confidence to try different things so fans need to get off Forrest’s back when things don’t come off. Yesterday I thought he was good taking on people but also good in releasing the ball early and his delivery of the goal was brilliant.

2. BR wants to have a number of fast players to use the counter attack in Europe. In fact yesterday’s second goal is a perfect example of what you would hope for in an away game in Europe against decent opposition. Now we have Griif, Dembele and Sinclair – perfect counter attacking trio.

Things are looking good. WHo else will BR bring in?

Who needs the SMSM to critisize our players when there is plenty of our own so called supporters doing the same on all the Celtic Sites.
James Forrest is a Scottish International player, who has played under three different Scottish Managers. Are they all shite and award caps to anybody? No they are not and only pick the best Scottish players available.
He has and is playing for two Managers who ken the game more than any poster,or are there opinions superior to Men who have Managed teams at the top of British fitba,Nope, nope, nope.
Forrest was offered a contract and it was withdrawen before he could sign by Delia,a Manager who kens fuck all about fitba,a You Tube star, with the emphisies on the Tube bit.
The critique isny just unfair it is bordering on the paranoid, fucks sake someone critisised him the other day about his hairstlyle, some time its ok to critisize but gies a fuckin break.

See some sevco people were asking questions about Sinclairs registration, you couldnae make it up. Well you could when it comes to them feckers.
Elcormco great point about Boerrigter getting 2 game ban,the same should at least apply here.
We’d night thanks Andy with the updates, he will probably give the first 11 another run out, to keep getting the sharpness improved, and use the Milan match for the Squad players.
Going to be a great season. The supporters bus I travel on when home has increased membership again, after falling for the past 4 seasons,so the good vibrations are back.

You have to question the mentality of ‘ supporters ‘ who are looking at a players haircut?
Sexually confused i think…..

Ronaldo has a dodgy do but I’d take him lol. While were talking constructive criticism I have a wee bug bear about Griffith’s and his Big swingers (insert jokes here). Seems every game he pulls the leg back without looking and blooters it straight off a defender! I love leigh but he needs to be a bit less obvious of where he’s hitting it or play someone in. Even the best players like Suarez when we played Barcelona showed you can be unselfish sometimes

Mike, Monti and anyone else I have ever addressed by name,
With James Forrest it’s psychological. That’s all. I’m not demanding he cut his hair. I just wish he would stand up and be counted, accept his mistakes rather than reach for his fringe (hence the drinking game). He is awfully quick to shout at other players for not passing or making mistakes, but have you ever seen him be accountable for his mistakes? Nope! He just reaches for his fringe instead and takes a quick glance at the bench. I would prefer he held his hand up and said, “Sorry lads, cracking ball though. Gave a wee clap and got on with it.” I am pretty sure someone in the backroom staff have noticed how he is and if he signs (I hope he does because with a better understanding of what a team really is and some leadership knowledge he could be cracking for Celtic and Scotland), will look to change that about him. They recently gave him the armband in an effort to get buy in, make him feel like part of the team and try to make him accountable for the whole team performance. We as fans could also do our part. However, I want to see a response from him, not in how good he plays, but how he responds to failure and adversity. I want to see him become accountable. I want to see a change in how he acts and reacts to his team-mates. Mark my words if he signs on Under Brendan Rodgers and starts to accept accountability as part of the greater Celtic team there will be Fuck all standing in his way and we will be singing his name week in week out.

Cheers monti , I’ve thought the biggest problem with Forrest is delia and at the start Rodgers played him as an inverted winger on the left where his game is hindered , its no coincidence to me that since he’s moved to the right where he is on his natural foot and can drop the shoulder then race by the defender he has looked a far better player.

Uralius, Confidense is key to getting people (players) to improve,it does my head in when posters critisize players, who lets be honest can be injured or off colour, especially wingers who if they take on a defender and lose possession are shouted at just like strikers who miss the target.
The thing is with James Forest he gets it in the neck for nothing,we could name two players who never turned up at our last two games.Hardly anyone has critisized them, but Forrest scored a good goal with his left peg after having won the ball initially and STILL all you hear is HIM being critisised.
That to me reeks of stupidity or an agenda against him and i have absolutely no time for that.
I know that you look at tactics and the phsycology side of the game, thats fine by me,but it seems that a few posters have that agenda and if it shows then i will call it out.H.H.

James Forrest did an excellent job scoring with his Left foot and everyone of us on this site knows he is capable of even more. I agree that Deila played a huge part in hampering his recovery from injury, but I stand by my statement. A slight change in attitude will see him reach the heights of the game.

Crowd Funding, Mrs Mikey, has expressed a desire (steady now) to carpet the stairs and hall and i was wondering that if i started a crowd funding scheme to attain this for my hearts desire, some of my fellow posters would oblige, would anyone that has a good heart and is a true Tim,please advise if they would like to contribute to it.If you dinny then yoo are no Tims and are a crowd of stingy bassas.
Looking forward to your charitable replies.H.H.
