Celtic Diary Sunday July 31: Now We Can Concentrate On The (Champions) League

If we were to base the planning  of the Celtic management on yesterdays game alone, then one or two players have cememted their place in the squad, and one or two may well be heading out.

Celtic lost 3-1 to Barcelona in Dublin, not entirely unexpected, but put into context, it was just a warm up for the real football next week. Leigh Griffiths showed good awareness when he pounced on a defensive lapse to score Celtic’s goal, and Efe Ambrose was on the scoresheet as well, as he strove to get his annual fuck up out of the way before the serious stuff resumes.

Technically, two Celtic players scored, and two Barcelona players scored, so really it would have been 2-2 if not for the archaic rule that says you can’t just score into the nearest available net.

That evenness fits well with the match stats..

Now that Celtic cannot win the International champions cup, the side slip down into the European Champions League, despite still having one game to play , against Inter milan in Limerick.

And really, we should concentrate on that one at this stage, and maybe get ready for a serious tilt at the ICC next year.

Tom Rogic and Nadir Ciftci put in shifts that suggest they have a future under Ridgers, while , sadly for ambrose, the Nigerians shattered confidence may well be beyond repair even for Rodgers.

Not surprising when you consider he was booed by his own supporters. In a friendly. Which is absolutely disgraceful, and even stunned Brendan Rodgers into defending the likeable rogue.

Best fans in the world ? Aye, now and again.

Tom Rogic wore the captains armband in the second half, and he didn’t let anyone down, and its worth noting that he joins James Forrest in leading the side, at least nominally, in what seems to be a statement of intent by Rodgers.

If those two are going nowhere, however, its unlikely we’ll see Ambrose lead the side out anytime soon. For the sake of his own sanity, one feels he needs a fresh start somewhere else.

Friendlies are difficult games to judge anyone by, especially when they are sandwiched between a season defining european game, so criticism of Calum MacGregor, Stuart Armstrong and to a lesser extent Scott Brown is unjustified. Its what they do next week that counts.

Rodgers seemed pleased enough with the workout…

“It’s always a great education when you play against Barcelona. A lot of the elements we are looking to produce in our players in terms of that pressing element and possession is so impressive.

“But I thought my players were excellent, although there were times in the first half were we weren’t high enough up in our pressing.

“They exploited the space with the top quality players they have.

“We were much more aggressive with out pressure in the second half and created more chances.

“We haven’t had an easy game over pre-season – every one has been geared towards trying to qualify for the Champions League so this was a good exercise for us ahead of midweek.

“There is disappointment that we may have lost Nir Bitton. He has twisted his ankle and that prevented him from being able to move so well in the first half.”

If Biton is injured, and misses Wednesdays game, its a blow. His calming influence will be missed.

Meanwhile, man in the know, the Sunday Posts expert columnist Gordon smith, has some advice for Celtics new manager…

Brendan Rodgers needs to deliver more top signings for Celtic

Don’t worry, he’s had a word with someone …

Smith, whose knowledge of football can be compared with anyone’s in the world game, not favourably, but compared nonetheless, has given his assessment on Celtic for the coming season, and its fucking hilarious;

It’s not just Oor Wullie and the Broons that make the Sundays a chucklethon with that paper.

Who can fail to nod quietly to oneself when considering insight such as  this;

I think he will face two main challenges in his new position.

The first is recruitment, and how to get more players of the standing of Kolo Toure in to the club.

The second is being able to move others on to be left with the sort of lean group he likes to work with.

Laced with bitterness such as this…

RODGERS will lead Celtic to six-in-a-row but Hoops fans shouldn’t count on him hanging around to try and deliver number 10.

I believe his aim will be to build his reputation back up then, when his stock is high again, move back down to English football.

Fair enough, even Smiths entitled to an opinion. Why would he be looking to go back to England ?

You might want to make sure you’re not about to take a sip of a hot drink before you read the next bit.

That would be shrewd, too, because whether Celtic can get the 10 will be totally down to how Rangers develop, and Mark Warburton seems to be getting them going.

Nurse, he’s fallen out of bed again.

In fact, he’s rolled along the floor and tumbled down the stairs…

Still, in an article filled with objectivity assessing Celtic, he needs to mention “rangers ” just one more time..

MOST-IMPORTANT PLAYER

SCOTT BROWN is the captain of Celtic, plus the figurehead of the club.

But his form has dipped, and he was not at his best last season, with his performance in the Scottish Cup semi-final loss to Rangers much talked about.

But he is the top player at Celtic in the same way Joey Barton is at Rangers.

So I think he is the key. If he can recapture his form and fitness, then the Hoops will benefit greatly.

The comparison with Barton is presumably included to allow a reader who may not understand the role Brown plays at Celtic. Its why a writer would include it, as his job is to make sure the reader understands the point he is making.

So, lets further clarify this.

Scott Brown does for Celtic what Barton does for “rangers “.

Brown has been at Celtic for nearly ten years, won a basket of medals captained his club and country and has top level european experience.

Joey Barton is 34.

Its Sunday, and Knob of the Week appears to be sorted already.

Out of curiousity, and a desire to read more comedy gold, i had a look at what Smith says about “rangers “, and their championship hopes.

Better put that drink down again….

unless the Hoops have the distraction of a Champions League group campaign, I believe they are going to finish above their old rivals in the Premiership table at the end of this season

Yeah, sounds about right. He calls them our old rivals. And actually seems to think they are in with a shout. As long as we make the Champions League.

A side in the champions League will be usurped by a bunch of old men and kids who are led by a man in his first full season at the top domestic level -thats without mentioning Hearts, Aberdeen or a very consistent St. Johnstone- because, er, they are in the Champions League!

How could he have come to that conclusion?

THE way Mark Warburton has gone about his business has really impressed me. He has done things the right way.

Ah, right. The Warburton effect.

So along with infuential playmaker Barton we should be worried ? Right ?

Burnely, the newly promoted Premiershipside, faced “rangers ” in a friendly yesterday, which might well have alarmed a few bears. They figured Barton wasn’t worth a new contract.

After they duly dismissed the Ibrox side without breaking sweat, their manager , Sean Dyche , had a few words to say to his players ..

“But overall today I was generally pleased, but the last 30 minutes unacceptable from our team, simple as that.

“Some of it’s fitness, fatigue and that weird thing that when you’re 3-0 up you can get a bit lax.

“But the point is you can’t do that in the Premier League.

“We were there two years ago and you can’t do it; teams will hurt you.

“So we’ve got to learn from that today. Fitness will improve and as fitness improves so will focus and concentration.”

You might not see that quote in the papers today, and its odd how Smith never mentioned it…

Caption competition , and yesterday we gave you this…

and you gave us this..

The new Three Amigos issue a desperate “Come get me” plea to Big Brenders!

No doubt the next press conference will see Rodgers forced to deny any move for them…

Incidentally, it seems Warburtons denial of a move for Robin van Persie has come too late for one supporter,

He, or she, is no doubt heading into the cinema to see a film from the fantasy genre. Evidence seems to suggest he-or she-is a big fan.

Todays caption should be relevant, humorous and fit this picture…

Three International Managers, two Managers who ken the game played him,the only Manager that didny was not in any way considered to be a Manager.
His last Minuete goal against Shakter Karagandy was worth 10 mill pownds to the club.He has more than paid for his team inclusion,a lot mair than some of our so called players.
It just completely baffles me why supporters would want to continually critisize him, mibbee he is an easy target for some.

Yes I do and i’Lloyd tell you why, James Forrest has had injury after injury that has held him back, it’s that simple.

EH, GMS, Armstrong and Griff.canny get in to the Scotland team, but they arent lambasted on a Dailly basis.

The only reason WGS didny pick him was because, desperate Deila on orders from St.Peter would not play him, they tried to shove him out the door for a fee.WGS only picks players who are playing for there club team.I think that it is to the wee mans credit that he Wants to play for Brendan, who incidentily picks him for the team.

Posted this on yesterday’s diary just as today’s diary was posted so I “moved” it here, in the hope for some feedback other than MSN and Wikipedia.
Looking for some opinions on Scott Sinclair. Is this even realistic; can we meet his wage demands; where does he play best; what are his strengths and why does Brendan want this particular player? I only pay attention to Celtic because I have no time for any other teams or leagues etc.

That Ralphys got a lot to answer fur,he does that all the time,he must be after double time.
Scott Sinclair, has played for Brendan, like Toure,Brendan TRUSTS Sinclair, either that or hes boofin his burd.He.He.
He is a pacy, wide man or can operate as a back up striker,he seems to have lost his way recently, however his talent is still there and if Rodgers is willing to pay whatever wages Sinclair needs then I trust him and will interested like everyone else look forward to seeing him play.It also suggests to me that the rumour of GMS going on loan to Hertz as part payment to the Paterson deal could be true.Paddy McNair the M.U. centre half on loan is also rumoured, not for the first time.

Every Manager has his favourits, they call them there bankers, the Manager places his trust in them and backs them 100% in return they give everything back to him.
Rodgers isny any different, that is why he went to Toure and chased Allan,we/he couldny afford him and he went to Stoke. The same with Sinclair.

Just a wee reminder of what we will be up against in the future.
John Fleming, the SFA’s head of referee development use of the words the referee fraternity.(masons) is worrying to say the least.

Here’s the article.

Craig Thomson and Steven McLean have been appointed referee recruitment and education managers by the Scottish Football Association.

Both category one referees will remain as active officials while job-sharing.

They will concentrate on delivering recruitment, retention and development programmes, developing relations with schools, colleges and universities.

The SFA says it also hopes the duo will help to increase respect and understanding of the referee’s role.

John Fleming, its head of referee development, said: “Their experience will be a huge asset to the department, the referee fraternity and the SFA.

“As part of the new Scottish FA strategic plan I considered it vitally important that we use the expertise and enthusiasm of two active referees.

“Previously the role of referee development officer was considered the next step for former referees but we need to be more proactive and forward-thinking.”

Thomson will continue to work as a solicitor part-time while McLean has left his previous job as a physiotherapist to focus on the new job.

Thomson, with eight years’ experience as a Fifa ref, described himself as “thrilled” to have been appointed.

“This new role will enable me to share my experiences with the next generation of referees,” he said.

“I am also confident that by utilising two active referees, the public, the clubs and the media will gain a better understanding of the unique pressures and responsibilities of the job.”

Cartv,

We have a league start schedule that is designed to strip points from us. They are rebuilding their squad from a blend of youth and experience plus some “stars” from the past. This formula has worked before. I recall a Morton team from the early sixties thatvran away with the secondary division title and then stormed up the top division. That team was full of youth and free transfers. Bate Borisov have had similar succss using this formula. I would not write the “rangers” off so quickly. They did beat us last season. They will challenge this year and do not forget that they will be aided by penalty awards and favourable refs.

Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between what you hope for and what is reality.

Enjoy your posts,

As i recall the Tic.were allowed to play in the I.C.C. and the fixtures were organised around that, but the truth is that we all have to play the same teams,so it doesnt matter,when/who we play.
The huns will be praying that we qualify for the C.L. or E.L.so that may give them another edge.
However we now at last have qualified Management Team, with the probability that some new first team players will come in.
Soooo bring it on.

Uralius he seems to like playing with two wingers , roberts is making an ipact on the right hand side tho he really needs to stop trying to take on five players and cut inside to shoot every time he gets the ball. Head up and pass to strikers please. We need someone on the left and anyome who has saw sinclair play will know he would fit right in there as hes super quick , direct and scores goals. In brendans other formation 4 3 3 he could play the left sided striker role perfectly. Cifti did well last night on the left, i would play him with griff on wed , dembele isnt doing it , hes greedy and touch not there yet

Efe rightly took the blame for that own goal, however if Gordon had shouted leave, then he surely would have and Gordon would save, the question is? Did Gordon shout?UIt is good to hear Griff.and Rodgers speak up for him and that is how it should be.Back your teamates and show togetherness in the face of critisism, there are enough Huns writing pish in the press for that.

Mike, I don’t think Gordon felt he needed to shout. There was no danger, as I remember it, the ball was going across the goal to one of two other Celts. If Ambrose had any clue who was around him he’d have left it; instead the usual knee-jerk lunge and goal.

Mikey, you’re right about our big keeper, I’ve said a number of times he needs to organise everything in the box a bit better when he can. A shout to Ambrose would have probably done the trick; the point I was trying to make was that Ambrose’s lack of awareness around himself is chronic. I know we’re on the same side, seeing the same things and ultimately that’s what matters, the tiny wee details are for players to learn, practice and then put into practice.

I couldn’t believe it when I heard some of the self styled “best fans in the world” booing one of their own players because he scored an own goal in a friendly match. At first I thought my ears were deceiving me, but it wasn’t just the one instance, this was repeated every time Ambrose touched the ball in the remainder of the first half
FFS these people want to have a long hard look at themselves and f*ck off if they can’t get behind the guys in the jerseys, regardless of how good or bad they are.

Cork,

I agree re Forest. He has had so many rebuilds……last year it was the mechanics of his running; previously it was his confidence. He has had several years to come good for Celtic. It is best for both parties that he moves on now. I wish him the best. We have young players coming through for the wing positions. They should be given a chance, McMullan, Nisbet etc.

BR does seem to favour 352. Which fills me with dread. I hope it is simply because we are short of CHs at the moment and not the preferred strategy. Neither Roberts nor Forest can track back. They were not built for that job. If we play this formation on Wednesday we shall play into the hands of Astana who like to play long high balls over the top for a fast break. Their two African players are ideal for this.
Still BR knows a lot more than I and I have faith in his judgement.

Good Diary. The pic of Lloyd Bridges “Guess I picked the wrong day to give up glue-sniffing” from Airplane, what a film. 1st time I’d seen him in a comedy and he was FN brilliant.
Thought there was a lot to be pleased about yesterday. Some experience for the young Hoops to run out alongside Barca in a game that the result truly didn’t matter. I was surprised by some of Ciftci’s movement; I’d written him off but there might just be a player in there. Eoghan and Paddy marking their territory and Tom Rogic showing some more class. Brendan will mould a top team, no doubts.
I genuinely felt sorry for Ambrose yesterday and hate to hear anyone booed; he’s finished at CP and we knew this a long time before yesterday, so his selection was my one criticism and it’s done him no favours. Cruel to be kind, get rid now.
Lovely touch from Suarez to Brendan; it’s some acknowledgement when a player of his calibre says he wouldn’t be where he is without Brendan’s influence.

What a change from less than three weeks ago. Losing to the Imps but now sitting on an away goal in the last qualifying round before the playoff for the CL. In between times surviving Leicester and Barca challenges. Quite a schedule and the season has not started yet!
You would have to be blind to not see the progress that the squad has made in a short time. What a contrast to ladt year!
Spend the money wisely on a management team and this is what you get. Will this lesson be learned and retained for the future?

We look like a club full of potential now.

There really is some difference in a short space of time and we’ve yet to see big Kolo.

I thought I had nothing to say and here I am on my third post! God Help you if I did have something to say!

I am mystified by the lack of chances that Henderson has received. When he came into the team he seemed to have it all. Good ball control, pace, strong tackler and confidence. To me he seemed exactly the type of mid that we had lacked since the best days of Kayal. He also seemed the natural replacement for Brown. I recall he played on the left wing against Killie away and he was very effective. Recently, he seems more tentative in his game and this does not suit him. I fear he has been coached to his detriment. What a pity if he is allowed to drift away from us and his true home.
Anyone know something about the background here?

Oh yeah. Here are our likely opponents in the next round. Copenhagen/Legia Warsaw/Dinamo Zagreb/Red Star Belgrade/Bate Borisov. I’m assuming they’ll all get through the current round.

Devoy,

I hope we do not play 352. It was OK versus the IMps who did not have much of an attacking threat but against Astana, it is risky. We could settle for 0-0 and still go through. They must score, we must prevent them.

We can’t possibly settle for a 0-0 at home in Europe.
We need to just be ruthless and go for it.

Monti,

I was not suggesting that we play for a 0-0 draw, just that that would be good enogh to get us through, so why take risks. I think we shall attack them but not with gay abandon, so to speak!

They have to come at us at some point, then they are vulnerable.

Monti,

This may appear twice but I was not suggesting we play for a draw just that it is good enough for us, but not for them. At some point they need to attack us, then they are exposed.

Effe is the bane of my life, I recall even blanking him
for a Boyata mistake although I hope the latter can still make it.Both have pace, good in the air, Boyata scores goals, Effe not so much. However by all accounts Effe is a decent guy with a good professional attitude and a commitment to the club. No one wearing the hoops should be bood by Celtic supporters, we can criticise him in a constructive way and we can demand ( hope) he doesn’t get picked again but if he is out there in our shirt, he is one of us. In my opinion Effe is a very poor decision maker, time and time again he gets that part of his game wrong and I can’t trust him in a vital game, that’s my take on it.

BJF,

Agreed. If he is on the park, he should be supported.O’Connell scored an own goal recently. He has had misplaced passes that have put the team in trouble. However, he is not subjected to the same abuse as Efe. Nor should he be…neither should be, in fact. Remember the Support in “Supporter”.

The Team are improving, with a Manager who kens what he is doing and remember there is another month of possible transfers to come and go.If as he suggests that he wants to bring in four new players, they will presumably be first team players,so this team could change drastically.
I will only speculate if i am paid,so wilny be divulging any mair secrets untill then.

“Is it really 4 years?
July 31 2012, Shareholders have voted in favour of Rangers owners Sevco Scotland Limited changing its name to The Rangers Football Club Limited.
I wonder what the shareholders that day that voted for the name change make of all the SMSM dancing round the name change as they were there and took part at first hand the vote to change the name. And i wonder if the shareholders ever talk about that day?”

Cortes, that’s not quite correct. It may have been in the SMSM but it’s bullshit. Shareholders of the original huns had nothing to do with the name change, and, as I type, original hun shareholders have received nothing; their club/company is in Liquidation (deid, eh?) but not, as yet, liquidated. It cannot be liquidated until the decision of the Supreme Court is taken, or BDO (the Liquidators) withdraw their appeal against the current ruling on the Big Tax Case. The two entities co-exist but have no other ‘relationship’. This, of course, is enough to prove the same club shite is just another con, a con attempted but failed by a lot of the establishment and ALL of the SMSM.
There was a rapid switch of old hun assets from Sevco 5088 Ltd. (the Administrator Duff & Phelps’ preferred bidder) to Sevco Scotland Ltd. (The mechanics of this have been hidden and never challenged) Masonry, of course. On 27th July at the notorious 5-Way-Agreement they tried to sneak everything ‘under the radar’ to facilitate the lie of same club. Be aware, the ‘club’ that took the field against Brechin in a minor cup tie on 29th July was no version of “rangers”; it was Sevco Scotland Limited. The switch to TRFCL did happen on the 31st of July, my wedding anniversary, but it had NOTHING to do with a club formed in 1872/3. Sorry about length of post but this is crucial to the truth being aired freely.
PS The huns went into administration on Valentine’s Day, my son’s birthday. Lest I forget (but I wont). 🙂

Cortes, you’re not ‘getting’ this, and it’s crucial.
‘Shareholders’ in Sevco Scotland at the time was Charles Green and that’s all, and it was all done on Friday the 27th. The most crucial point in what you put up (courtesy of another) is what they’ve tried to con you into, viz the lie: “the owners of Rangers, Sevco Scotland limited”. Sevco Scotland Limited were NEVER the “owners of Rangers”. The assets of the distressed club were sold to the preferred bidder and then transferred to Sevco Scotland. Please, FFS, I’m sure you mean well but don’t post about critical things you don’t fully understand. Those bastards are dead, I can prove it and I don’t need further obfuscation on the issue.
Just keep supporting the Bhoys, the huns have much to come when we’ll need a lot more jelly and ice-cream.

However a hope that’s his last performance in a celtic jersey, continually makes bad mistakes that have cost us big games, hope he moves on and wish him well.

I see we are being linked with Manchester Utd’s Paddy McNair?
The lad might be a good player but the point is is that he isn’t our player.
What exactly do our scouts get paid for?
I mean I could compile a list of players from EPL clubs, who are looking to be loaned out.
What happened to scouting a player over a lengthy period then buy him?
How long did we scout Virgil Van Dijk for?

Reply to  Monti

Monti, Paddy McNair I believe is the holding midfielder we need. I think this is his best position, though he can easily play right back and Centre back. His contract is up in 2017, it would be ideal to get him in and get first chap when his contract expires.
If the lad proves his worth. I would have no hesitation in taking him on,but I think the big clubs in England will beat us too him.

If we play with the two wingers i would like to see mcgreggor play on the left , he played there when he first came in and scored goals. Is far more effective attacking than in midfield , anyone agree

Reply to  Delbhoy

Delbhoy, I think McGregor deserves to be dropped m8. He has been very poor in games so far.
Cifti was a breath of fresh air when he went down the left yesterday, and his height and physical approach is what we need. It was almost Sammyesk the way he tried to run at the barca boys.
So for me
Gordon
Janko Lustig Toure Tierney. If Toure not fit OConnell.
Brown Ajer
Roberts. Rogic. Cifti.
Griffiths. Dembele.
I think we need the physical approach, and be able to match them for height.
Ajer Rogic Cifti Dembele gives us that.

4-4-2 versus Astana?
Gordon
Lustig/Ajer/O’Connell/Tierney
(Toure for O’Connell if Toure’s fit)
Roberts/Brown/Rogic/McGregor
Ciftci/Griffiths
I think Ciftci can hold the ball up for Griffiths but Demebele can come on later.
subs: Fasan/Ajer or Toure/Izzy/Allan/Christie/Forrest/Janko.

Astanas main threat comes from the wide areas this is why Brendan opted to go with 3 at the back and 2 covering WB’s in order to double up on their wingers when defending.
I should think he might opt for a similar tactic but perhaps a 3-4-3
