Celtic Diary Tuesday July 26: A Few Problems

Well, quite a few really.

Erik Sviatchenko became the latest centre half to pick up an inury and not travel with the squad to Khazakstan yesterday.

That now means that five of our centre halves will be missing against Astana, seven if you count the two that will no doubt be posted missing during the game.

Never mind.

It looks as though the big man will get a chance to atone for his past errors in Europe with Brendan Rodgers simply having no ne else to turn to.

The full list of fit experienced central defenders is;

Ambrose.

Mikael Lustig can play there at a puch, which leaves Saidy Janko as right back, but he has failed to impress, at least defensively, and with this being the away leg, keeping things tight at the back is essential.

Eoghan O’Connell did well at Leicester, but his inexperience is a worry. and if he errs in any way, it could be confidence destroying, putting his development back years.

Kolo Toure’s  experience could have been utilised, maybe as a third centre back behind Ambrose and O’Connell to help keep things tidy, but he hasn’t travelled, and its too late to rush him out now, due largely to the distance involved and time difference, which would mean he’d arrive about forty minutes before he left, or something.

A shame, because as this graph shows, he’s anything but past it…

Thats two defenders in with the initials KT, maybe theres a pattern emerging. Maybe Kritian Tamme, the Levidia and Estonia u-21 keeper is next ?

Or Kenny Tele, at Ajax ?

Well, there at least would be more of a structure to recruitment policy if they’d done that over the last few years. and probably less duds.

Charlie Mulgrew is another option, but only if he can be found and persuaded to sign acontract which is nowhere near as good as the one he’s been offered down south.

He is reported to have said he can’t manage Wednesday anyway, but as they’ve only offered a playing deal that seems irrelevant.

I’m here all week. Try the veal.

It’s not exactly keeping the nerves at bay ahead of tomorrow afternoons game. Thats right. tomorrow afternoon,

The six hour time difference means that kick off British summer Time is 3pm.

Thats what happens when they regionalise the European cup and include a central Asian section.

Though one has to remember, that if true, Peter Lawwell failing to carry out the formalities in the Shane Duffy fiasco may now be nothing short of corporate negligence.

Assistant manager Chris Davies sounded calm, but he was probably tired;

We have a gameplan for Astana, we have had a good look at them and we know what we have to do.

‘It will be a difficult game. They are a team who have done well in the Champions League at home.

‘The pitch is astrosturf but is a little bit quicker than the Red Imps’ surface. That could help.

‘They are physical, they have quality and we will have to be on our game.’

I’ll be happy just to stay in the game as long as we can.

There’s little that could have been done to prevent this situation, when faced with the cold light of day. injuries are injuries, and to have four out, if you count Ajer, is just bad luck.

Whatever way you try to perm the defence, it looks like Efe will be in there, and , well, Efe is in there….

Stefan Johansen hasn’t travelled either, though Nir Biton has, and along with Tom Rogic , these are the latest tipped to be heading for the exit door before the window closes, which is quite a spectacular mixing of metaphors if i do say so myself.

It would be nice to get through these games and look forward to group football of some sort.

From where I’m sitting this morning, I’d be happy with Europa at this stage, to allow the manager a chance to see what he’s got to work with.

but, and this is the most important thing of all, we’re not done yet. This is Astana, who have a decent home record at this level.

Thats it, really. Decent.

Of course, the manager might decide that the best thing we could do is unsettle the Khazaks by wearing the all new pink strip, and hope that we can disturb their concentration by looking ridiculous.

It’s an idea.

Reaction to the kit has not been good, and sales will indicate if there is such a thing as bad publicity…

The third kit is designed for children, and we have been given an exclusive pictures of the young lad who test marketed it at school…

Certainly thought this through, haven’t they ?

Out of the three strips that have now become official seasons kit for Celtic, two are entirely unsuitable for use during a first team game, and one of those is actually unsuitable for anything.

Still, if you want one, go and get one…

Elsewhere, and as if the feat of collecting 54 titles in just four years wasn’t remarkable enough, it seems “rangers ” have done something else  no-one can claim to have achieved;

A mere four months before the competition even starts for Premiership clubs. Thats Scottish Premiership, not English Premiership, as named by those marketing experts over at the league.

Well done Warburton! Setting the pace for others to follow…

Lets get the caption competition back on the road, with this image, which conjures up childhood memories for those of us who spent summer in Dunoon..

Morning Ralph,
When i read the news about Sviatchenko being out for three weeks this morning, i actually had to take a seat at the Kitchen table, my heart sank a wee bit, suddenly the realisation who the alternatives were induced nausea.
I need to lie down for a bit….

We could have fucking done without this, now we see where we are, no Mulgrew, no Simunovic, no Boyata (that’s not actually a bad thing, but i will portrat it as such for the hell of it), i’m actually struggling to focus and think straight because i know what may be coming here.
My dog was close to death this morning, he was doing that tappity tap thing with his paws on the floor as i was reading the news about Sviatchenko… WILL YOU STOP FUCKING DOING THAT lol!

Right fuck all this negative stuff, whoever get’s a shirt go out and do yourself and the club proud….GET FUCKING INTAE THEM!!!

Well one thing is obvious expectation levels have just been lowered, again.Option one, when it comes over into the tic half (the ba)kick it into the stands.Option two just go for it through caution to the wind and just Attack,Attack,Attack.
Sorry for this Monti but this tie could just, could just put Efe’s transfer in doubt.
Toure, Johanson hisny travelled and Bitton is still having problems with his groin,a bit like masell.
This is a Big, Big test for Brendans team,it will be very interesting to see how he copes with basically Deila,s team.

i would think about playing Biton at the back as he is good on the ball, doesnt make mistakes and he is tall enough to win high balls into the box.
if we do have to use efe then i would play him at right back and move Lustig into the center so that when efe does make his mistake(s) then hopefully it wont be too damaging

John54

I guess the fact that Lustig played central defence against Liecester is an indication that he’s likely to play there tomorrow.
Any time I’ve seen Biton play as an emergency centre half he’s been poor and indecisive.

Astonished you still going on about Duffy x did no one watch euro’s, he was good at set pieces but atrotious at defending, constantly out of position, lacked pace, mis timing tackles and not good at all defensively. Would be no better than Ambrose or boyata. This frenzy to sign a mediocre player just because he is Irish is laughable. Go with back 5 on wed. Lustig, Ambrose, O’Connell, janko and Tierney as full backs. Brown, armstrong, mcgregor in midfield and dembele, Roberts up front. Griffith’s no good in Europe as can’t keep possesion and misses to many chances at that level.

Delbhoy, cheers the reason for Rogic is for his height at set pieces, I think this will be important. I don’t think Christie is up to this level yet. Roberts to come on later in the match when the game gets stretched a little. But I think Rogic would be more suitable in this match.

So the board AND the manager did not factor in injuries during their ‘planning sessions’, including the long term injury to Simunovic. biut they all sat around with their rosary beads out praying it will be OK. Ambrose will start as he is all we have, I remember when he came on against Malmo, he was our best player. At least he looked as if he cared. But he will not be the most confident player and coupled with his limitations as a defender it has calamity written all over it. I really hope that Europe is finished for this season if we don’t qualify for the CL. The Turady cup is a waste of tiem and will cost uds points in the league, not to mention more bloody Sunday games. 6.00pm kick-offs in front of 20 thousand is ahrdly the season we want best jsut not to qualify for it. But up and at ’em tomorrow. No other option because they will be more than aware we are there for the taking. Hopefully we don’t get humiliated. If Erik is out for three weeks he misses difficult league games as well. With the mob at Ibrox getting a relatively easy start to the season we could be a couple of points behind them going into the game on Sept 10th. BR could be just about to have the worst start any Celtic manager has had to his time in charge for years. john Barnes had a better start than Stein! Time for Celtic to employ someone who knows what they are doing. Or someone who gives a toss.

I was glad to see young O’Connell score against LC . It will boost his confidence, and it ha forced me to think again about him. However, he did have a nightmare against VW and has looked shakey at times. There are times and places where you are forced to risk inexperience. A good example is our young keeper in Barcelona. No choice but to play him, and it did work out. That is not the position here….we have a choice. Lustig and or Ambrose depending on the formation. The emphasis has to be on defence in this game. Better teams than us have been put to the sword in Astana.. I have not got a clue whether BR will play 3 or 4 at the back. If he had two experienced fit CHs I think he would have gone with 4, now.?..who knows. The only glimmer of hope in this, is that Astana have their problems in attack. Mind you, I’d rather have their problems than ours.

The real ball buster in this situation is that this situation was a strong possibility. The situation with Boyata, Simo and Mulgrew was known months ago, as was the inexperience of our youthful options, O’Connell, McCart. The fact that nothing was done in time to eliminate this risk is incompetence of the highest order at the highest level. Malmo were washed away in the group stages last year but they walked away with around 13 million euros plus coeficient points! We have gambled with the same financial stakes. There seems to be a lack of understanding about the link between playing and financial objectives. We need a director of football operations, or at leadt some of that function needs to devolved to BR, if we are still bent on saving money.

Interesting point made earlier on why are so many CHs out injured. Did you waych John Kennedy on Saturday. Perhaps, it was just the poor timing of the camera shots but he seemed to be the only one in the dugout not taking notes. So does he think everything is alright in defence? No need to analyse performances there? I want this guy to succeed but if the above is an indicator and if I were BR, I’d be looking for a replacement PDQ.

Rebus, I remember that Barca game well I was at it.
Protecting a 1-0 lead we lost Big Rab and Bobo.
Marshall and a certain young John Kennedy came into the team.
Both were magnificent, and we held out 0-0 to go through 1-0 on aggregate.
There is nothing to fear in playing OConnel, the og will have been forgotten about, and his goal, and what a goal, against Leicester is now firmly in his mindset, that he belongs at this level. It will have him full of confidence. Lustig in beside him will talk to him,and bring him through, I would have him before Effy any day.
I like Effy,I have met him on numerous occasions and he is always generous with his time with the grandson, but he like Ronnie can’t be trusted to get the job done.
You just know that for 5 minutes Effy would be involved in causing a goal, or getting sent off. He isn’t worth the risk.
OConnell may get nervous, but we should play him,it’s his position it’s what he has grafted for, and it is his time.
You’ll never beat the Irish.

Jimmy,

What a game both Kennedy and Marshall had> I believe MON said to Marshall afterwards that he may as well retire now because he would never have another game like that again! Words to that effect.

Not convinced by O’Connell so far but my mind has opened a bit.

My judgement on players may be suspect. I had a very brief brush with the professional game and at training I saw this barely more than 5 foot chunky player who thought he could play CF. I took comfort from his presence because I thought if he can be here, then so can I. He went on to become the most(I think) expensive transfer in the UK at that time. Whereas I was done in eighteen months. So much for my judgement! Don’t ask I shall not reveal who it was.

Del, thats for me to ken.

Astana are a big physical side,Ajer,Johanson,Toure and of course the centre backs never travelled,so it just depends on how he sets up.Does he go pell mell?no widny think so,my thoughts are that he would go 4 at the back and 5 in the middle,to limit the space and use a lot of his squad. However if they lose an early goal then he might just go for it,sometimes the best form of defence and all that. The thing is that he is Versatile,he will not stick to one set up,the players are young and might be nervous,so he might start with the older ones,Ambrose,Biton etc.It will be intersting to watch what he does. They have lost two senior players including there captain and leading scorer. It just depends on there big boys at the back and use Dembelle first,to rumble them up.
