Celtic Diary Monday July 25: Transfers, Travels and Terrible Strips

I’m glad New Balance got the kit deal.

No, really.

After at least one meeting to ask supporters what they think should be worn, where one daft bastard made a five hundred mile round trip to attend, so far we’ve seen them merely update old “favourites ” that sold quite well. Instead of paying any attention to all of those who sat round the table and gave their thoughts and reasons as to what they would prefer. Like they’d asked us to, in fact.

And then there’s this…

Quite how anyone made the leap from the 1967 final to a football top that isn’t green and white is beyond me. This isn’t just thinking out of the box, its up there with Salvador Dali and the rest of the surrealists.

The club website tried manfully-hah, pink top, how can you do anything “manfully  ” ?- to promote it.

THE long-awaited new 2016/17 Celtic FC Away Kit was officially revealed by New Balance this morning. The stylish pink and black third kit is sure to capture the imagination of supporters and add to the excitement of a first season under Brendan Rodgers.

It isn’t. honestly, it isn’t.

Inspired by the colour of the 1967 European Cup final match ticket, the striking pink and black design honours the remarkable achievement of the ‘Lisbon Lions’ team whose journey to final continues to inspire Celtic supporters young and old.

I’m quite sure that fifty years ago, after the game, Bertie Auld would have turned to Tommy Gemmell and said “here, ah hope they bring out a pink strip to celebrate this “

This famous team and their run to that final in 1967 makes Celtic ‘A Club Like No Other’, which is why this timeless phrase is applied to the internal hem of the new jersey.

Oh, aye. a pink strip does indeed make us a “club like no other. “

The new design merges tradition with innovation as the modern shirt that will be worn by the likes of Leigh Griffiths, Moussa Dembélé and Scott Brown in the season ahead features the latest New Balance Dry technology, providing maximum comfort with a moisture wicking fabric that helps keep players cool and dry whilst wicking sweat from the body, making it fast drying.

Still, at least you still get your moisture wicked.

Whats happened here-and they did ask us back then at the meeting what we thought of a pink top-or a blue one, which also seems to have sort of arrived, is they’ve decided on pink and then found the most tenuous of links to justify it.

Still, like I said. I’m glad New Balance got the deal. Three tops a year at sixty quid a go for three years equals a saving of £540 for anyone not stupid enough to buy one.

Kolo Toure joined Celtic at the weekend, fortunately before the new top was announced, which may also explain the delays in Scott Sinclair arriving, shane duffy hesitating-although the Etims twitter account fully explained that one-and Joe Allen still thinking about where he wants to play his football.

Toure , noted for his bravery and determination on the pitch has moved to Glasgow despite anti-Ivory coast being prevalent amongst local opposition support, and he deserves a round of applause for ignoring it.

Ivory coast, as we know, has a long history of disassociation with the protestant culture, and for this their flag was ceremomiously burned in Belfast, along with those of Poland, the Palestine and the Vatican City

The on -off-off again saga behind the possible transfer of Scott sinclair to Celtic rumbled on. He’s supposed to join today, though he might not.

Whereas with the Shane Duffy deal, where Peter Lawwell allegedly forgot to send in a formal offer, here it appears that he doesn’t want to offer them what they want, and it looks like a bot of a power struggle is developing between Lawwell, who used to run the team, and Rodgers, who thinks that’s what he was hired for.

Rodgers will really piss Lawwell off this week, when he hands James Forrest a new deal….Lawwell, of course, was the man who took the original offer away from the table before forrest even had a chance to discuss it with family, which probably explains why he hasn’t been one hundred per cent since.

For all the fuss, and all the transfer gossip, which has lead to a bit of panic amongst supporters that Celtic are dallying, its only July. hindsight is a wonderful thing, and if the hoops do exit the Champions League over the next month or so, we need to rememeber that players of the calibre we’d like will wait and see how we get on before joining.

And there’s over a month left of the transfer window for them to pick who they want.

Joe allen, for instance , has been told his club have accepted an offer of £14m from Stoke city, and on Radio Stoke this morning, boss Mark Hughes said he was waiting for the player to make up his mind.

Like he’s waiting to see how another club gets on.

In a bit of a rush this morning, as I had a fairly busy weekend so, a quick run through and a few thanks before i go.

My son and i started out from Stoke on Friday night, and when we boarded the train for Cetral at Crewe, it turns out some of the Leicester CSC were on board, so we joined them for a chat.

Their club, like ours in Stoke and several others in the midlands, are suffering from a fall in membership, and the age demographic is similar to ours in that maybe ten years down the line there’ll be no-one left…

We can all do our best down here, but in order to get the kids and youngsteres travelling again, Celtic needs to help us out here.

Then, after staying over in Dunoon, a quick visit to the Greenock CSC -who have a splendid surrounding in their club building in which to while away the hpours, and again, a big thanks to hughie for picking us up in Gourock and taking us down for a beer.

Then it was off to Malones, to put names to face and faces to names -and a great few hours that was-until my leg and my son’s liver simultaneously packed up, and i figured it would be a good idea to get him home before the wife blamed me for losing him somewhere, whiuch she would have done.

It was great to meet up with and talk to the regukars, and astonishingly, not one of them turned out to look anything like i had imagined they would be.

Though I must stress i don;t spend a great deal of time imaginging what they look like.

Anyway, we must do it all again soon.

right, got to go. The dug needs her boosters and i’m due at the vets in minutes five.

It’s all go, you know.

Morning Ralph,
A big thanks to you for making the effort to come up to Glasgow and meet some of the regulars, hope you and your lad enjoyed the Craic.
The new strip? Fucking awful and i hope no one buys it.
New balance? Fucking wake up ya clowns, our colours are green and White, try bringing out another shirt with those two colours only, incorporated.
Who designs the strip? Is it a spotty, bespectacled, tank top wearing, bow tied guy called Jeremiah Fuckwit from Ohio?
Honestly, GREEN AND WHITE!!!

Anyway, enjoyed Saturday and hope to see you lot again soon! HH

Glad you all had a good time at the weekend but what the hell is the fetish for James Forrest. An average player that the club stood by through thick and thin with all his injury problems and he pissed about on his contract so if anyone wants him punt him and let him go.

mike
Reply to  ronny

ronny, that maybe your opinion it is not mine,Forrest has been capped at every level for his Country by three different Managers.
The contract that he wanted to sign was withdrawn, because Lawwell was bringing in Roberts, thats why disaterous Dellia never played him last season.Rodgers likes him and wants him to stay,he must be pish tho,cos thats 5/6 Managers that rate him,so they are all wrong tho?Forrest luvs our club and has turned down other offers to stay, can we not give him a break?Other players have used Celtic for there own end, never Forrest,I seen him come on in a match last season for 10 mins.we got beat,he hardly touched the ball but everybody decried him alone, the ghuy needs a break.

ronny

True but if you are you should share and then perhaps I will get off his case.As to offers Forrest has turned down to stay what were they ? It looked like he was stalling on his contract and when a good offer did not come in he backtracked. I will be happy to be proven wrong if he turns out to be a great player but just don’t see it. Sorry.

Monti

Reply to  ronny

Ronny,
James didn’t turn down or reject the contract offer from Celtic, Lawwell took the offer of the table because he didn’t get a quick answer.
At no time has Forrest wanted to leave Celtic and i hear he will sign a new contract with the club soon m8! HH

Sorry to have missed Malones on Saturday – sounds like it was a good night. Hopefully there will be another such gathering sometime in the future. As for that strip, there have been some truly awful designs over the years, but this one is by some miles at the top of the list. Why such a thing was ever approved is beyond me. Celtic play in green and white hooops and unless we are playing Buckie Thistle, Shamrock Rovers, Yeovil Town or Sporting Lisbon there is abosultely no need to change into any fancy away strip.

Why Celtic need to release three strips is beyond me. Possibly because teh club has actually no say in the matter and must fully enagage in the ripping off of their support. We play in green and white hoops there are only about five clubs in Europe that we would need to change the strip for, and we will never play about three of them. In Scotland we don’t need to change out strip at all. We should play in the hoops unless playing Shamrock Rovers or Sporting Lisbon. And when are you going to stop mentioning Joe Allen’s name? It is almost as embarrassing as the effort that Celtic are making to bring players in (to describe it as half -arsed would be kind). Why are we even talking to Villa about Sinclair. They bought him for 2,5 million, he hadn’t had a good game in about 3 years. He plays about half a season in the worst ever EPL team and they want 5 million. The guy is done. He will not get any better, Half a million is too much. Can someone explain to me why Brendan Rodger cannot sign players he has not already worked with? That means we have a very small pool to choose from. Surely he could consider soemone else. Now it is Patrick Bamford, a guy that couldn’t score for love nor money last season. We appear to be following a strategy (Ha!) that we were all told we simply could not afford to do, under ayear ago. Buying failed players from the top two divisions in England in the hope the we have employed David Copperfield type manage who can wave a wand, and Hey Preston! You are no longer shite and Southampton want to buy you. Again it is a get on your knees and pray that Brendan can fix these failing, unwanted over-priced duds. We need to look a bit further afield or 10 million looks like it is about to disappear. man City and Chelsea can afford to lose that amount we certainly cannot. There is a greater probability that Sinclair and Bamford will not improve any further than there is of them becoming good players for Celtic or anyone else. Their careers are moving in the wrong direction. They are projects, and expensive ones.

There is an auld sayin that yoo canny please everybody, but john there is nothing that seems to please you,if we buy nobody we are skint if we buy somebody, then they are garbage.
Fact, (as far as we know,)we spent £500 k. on Dembele.
Fact, Toure has joined us for understandable reasons, maturity at the back, something we have all been crying out for.
Fact, we have a debt burden of £17 mill.
Fact, we have over one month left to sign new players.
Yes defo. we should have signed other players before now,but constantly critising the club, isny going to improve anything.
We know you are angry and the reasons for that, but I would rather think positively and be realistic, rather than constantly critisize.

As ralph says , if we qualify and then say we draw a group with real madrid for example , then the players will want to come to play in the champions league , yes it would be ideal to sign now but id rather we got a higher caliber of player with more money to buy than buy average and add to an allready big squad. Toure is top quality and will give us invaluable organisation and experience at the back. Sinclair is used to mixing it with the bestso playing in the champions league wont phase him

Del, I have lost count of the fitba players, that would luv to play for the tic,the list is endless, but they are pros. that should follow the money, for there future, who would grudge them that, not I.
That is why players like Larsson,et all should rightly be hero worshipped for there commitment.Forest,Brown, Mulgrew,K.T.McGregor they share our luv of the club and should be praised to the rafters.None of them deserve any form of critisism.
Rodgers a first class Manager is trying to bring in players that HE trusts,I wish him well.He varies his tactics and his man Management is superb, just like MON,give him time, trust him and Hopefully things could be GREAT.

I’d love to see Forrest find consistency and stay injury-free but these are 2 things I’ve been waiting for him to achieve for 5 years. Wish him well but think it’s best if he moves somewhere else now; he’s 25 and I don’t see him getting any better unfortunately.

Reply to  el_guapo

James has scored important goals for us, I think he knows himself, that things haven’t panned out the way he would have wanted either. Our fans have to take responsibility too,he became a target for the boo bhoys along with Johansen and lost heart, and who can blame them. Playing football is about confidence, so we have a duty as fans, to give them that confidence not take it away. I still hope Johansen could be brought onside again,I think he was the one who suffered the most, and I believe we have a player who could run Barton ragged.

Reply to  Jimmybee

Well said jimmy, players thrive on confidence,if we continually critisize them, how can they recover that confidence, the head goes down, they try less and they feel the loss of our luv.
Wingers in particular as well as strikers thrive on confidence,a full back stops them in the tackle and they have to go back to try again, they feel isolated on the wing stretching the width, that in it self creates space for other players,it aint an easy gig, even P.Roberts has his off days and supporters get on there backs.
We wish them well in Astana, premier sports tv 2.00 for a 3.00pm kick off .COYBIG.

football is primarily about ability, confidence augments ability or more guys from the public park would make the grade. If you continually turn in below par performances then you need to go. James Forrest should have been gone at least two years ago. if he hangs around and signs a new contract you know exactly what is going to happen, he will be injured again and back to square one. then he is 28 and we are having the same stupid conversation, hope ghe can remain injury free and get soem consistency. Jet him work on his consistency at Notts County or Hibs. Just stop paying him. Sincclair is in exactly the same mould. Man city and Chelsea will take a punt on a player for 5 or 6 mil knowing just because he has played a couple of games over a contract they will get most of it back. But paying more for him than Villa did is crazy. Same with Bamford. Listen to wjhat other supporters say an indication of what he brings. Apparently he is disinterested and gutless. Thought he would have made it by now and is resentful he has to go down from the big leagues. Buyer beware.

All hands on deck Monti, this is when a Manager earns his bread, notice I put him in midfield,he is better used there than the back four, however will Brendan use him there. That is the deliema,he might be reckless and just go for it,remember MON verses Ajax,3-0 up before they knew what hit them, hhmmm not so sure mate.Interesting match, they are a big physical team and we will need to fight for every ball.
Toure and Johanson did not travel,O Connell mibbee aye mibbee no.
