Celtic Diary Thursday July 21: Celts In Seven, sorry, Three Goal Romp

Celtic showed considerable improvement last night in beating Limcoln Red Imps, and in the warm summer sunshine of a Thursday morning, thats all that matters.

A change in formation to 3-5-2 surprised the section of the support that doesn’t read the Dairy replies, and with the sites credibility at stake after getting something right, an urgent text was sent to the manager to instruct the players to keep the score down and thus deny us a double.

We are grateful to him for that, as we don’t want people to start thinking we actually know what we’re on about. Far rather they reckon we don’t, and then there’s still a chance of a career in the MSM.

Perhaps we’ll hear from Sky TV, who may need a little help in their pre match tactical assessments…

Or the BBC, who seem unsure of how the two legged format works…

The goals, all well worked and well taken, came during  a ten minute spell midway through the first half. Mikael Lustig, Leigh Griffiths and Patrick Roberts put the tie fairly safe, and apart from a couple of wobbly moments in defence, the reality is that had the team been maybe just ten per cent sharper then it would have turned into little more than a training exercise.

For those who think that it should have been more, and we need to go out and immediately buy some players in time for next weeks trip to Khazakstan, calm down for a minute.

There’s no need. These guys are just beginning to get it together, and deserve a chance to redeem themselves for last years debacle.

After all, no one expects us to qualify anyway, and bringing in another project-because you can forget about any blue chip signing at this stage of the proceedings- will only cause disruption to what seems like a fairly happy set of campers.

Maybe we could have been a little more equipped for these games, but in fairness we have to remember Boyata, who may well surprise us all yet, and Simunovic, who is impressing on the training pitch, are injured, and thats just bad luck.  Hard to legislate for, as surely  it doesn’t make sense to buy two players every time you dip into the market  just in case one does get hurt

Unless one of them is Derk Boerrigter, I suppose.

Back to last night, and in another triumph for the PR department at Celtic, the 2015-16 champions flag was unveiled. The honours were performed by Bobby Lennox and Rosemary Burns, wife of  Celtic man Tommy, which lent the occasion some grace and dignity. Incidentally,  I can’t think of a more fitting way to describe Tommy, and I like to think he’d be happy with that description.

It seems strange to unveil the flag at a European game, giving the occasion a surreal feeling, and maybe someone at the club should ask whoever thought this one up had really thought it through.

Flag day, and there’s a clue in the title, is a day out to celebrate winning the league, and not a precursor to an important European game.

Note Hoopy hanging around waiting for his first team debut again. It could be argued that the great day is getting closer…

The support did their bit, which included a cracking Tifo from the cracking tifo guys…

55,632 turned up for the game, which is a remarkable crowd for this time of year.

And they seemed to have fun, especially in the new standing area.

And one or two were quite relaxed in the London road supporters club…

( Are you sure about this-Ed  Nope, not at all -Ralph.)

Afterwards, manager Brendan Rodgers seemed quite relaxed the game was out of the way, and the side had moved into the next round;

“That was the objective coming into tonight I was very pleased with the first 30 minutes. I thought the intensity was outstanding in the team, our pressing and ability to force mistakes and then get goals.

“I thought the crowd were incredible. A near full house for a game like tonight was incredible and the players really felt that support. So overall we’re pleased to get through.

“It certainly wasn’t perfect – there’s a way to go for us in terms of where I want us to be, but I’m delighted with the attitude of the players and how they took the game from kick-off.

“We scored three and their goalkeeper probably stopped it maybe being double figures but we’re through and that’s the most important thing. We’re only four weeks into pre-season so I wouldn’t expect us to be anywhere near top gear, but I think there was some fluency and structural things within the team that was very pleasing.”

Which i think sums it up pretty accurately, but the press won’t allow him to get away as easily as that…and it was back to the old transfer tittle tattle…are we going to bring someone in before the deadline expires for the next game ? ( Which is actually Monday, as you can bring in a “wild card ” )

“A lot of players have played their first 90 minutes of the season so far but we look forward to the trip next week which, again, is another difficult tie on a plastic pitch but we’ll be ready for it.

“There’s no doubt we need one or two more that I want to bring in so let’s hope we can do something before that (Champions League transfer window) closes. That would be the plan and it would be a great boost to the squad.”

There’s talk that Shane Duffy may sign in time for that game, or possibly Kolo Toure. Or Jerry St. Juste. Or perhaps Hoopy the huddle hound will get his chance….

There is little point in bringing someone in just for the sake of bringing someone in. If a player is not an immediate improvement on what we have already, then its not worth it.

Joe Allen would fit into that category, although Liverpool have accepted a bid from Stoke City of £13m , which is a lot more depressing when you actually live in Stoke, and see how far behind even the most provincial of clubs in England can easily outbid one of Europes biggest and most famous, though the player himself is rumoured to have shouted “Fuck that !” and announced his retirement.

Last nights performance wasn’t perfect, but it showed that the players are listening to and responding to the manager, and while there is certainly room for improvement, at least we can say, even after just two games,  there are signs of it. Encouraging signs.

And thats a refreshing change.

The support might need to cut the manager and players a wee bit of slack here. We could be onto something that might be worth waiting for.

An unusual viewpoint, you may think.

Moussa Dembele missed a few last night, Leigh Griffiths probably more. Definitely a work in progress, but there is progress. They’ll be fine. #

Stuart Armstrong and Calum MacGregor worked together well, and they took a fair share of the legwork away from Scott Brown, who had a much better game.

And Patrick Roberts was outstanding, and really enjoyed himself, which might just help him decide where he wants to be for the next four ir five years…

“This gave me a taste of what the Champions League would be like.

“It was incredible from the start with the unfurling of the flag and all the fans cheering and singing You’ll Never Walk Alone.

“It was something special and I hope we can continue that and get through to the group stage.

He was a little more forthright on twitter;

Wow! First taste of a European night at Celtic park was incredible! Onto the next round!

Alright, it was only part time opposition, but the pressure was as great as anything else they’ll feel this season.

And its left them hungry for more.

“More ” at this point comes in the shape of Astana, the Khazak side who made the group stages last year. They scored a late winner at home last night to avoid elimination on away goals to Zaliris Vilnius, and book a date in Glasgow.

Astana , by all accounts, are the team Celtic supporters know most about. There is no doubt they are a stronger side than Lincoln Red Imps, but thats to be expected.

They made the group stages last year, and this year have a chap who might need keeping an eye on who has had six attempts on target in his appearances so far..

Not exactly the mission impossible some would have us believe.
Domestically, they look impressive, and are twenty games into their season, but its a different ball game when they, too, have to travel halfway round the world for a game.
They managed to score only twice in six games. Seven if you count the goalless draw in Lithuania last week.
In their league, they are the top dogs…
and are playing well at home…
However, things are different at Celtic Park now, and maybe the manager can adapt the side to deal with each game and its circumstances as they come around.
Last night certainly hinted at this.
Elsewhere, Neil Doncaster, the much maligned SPFL chief has been burbling again…mostly about negotiations for tv rights, which he shouldn’t be allowed any where near, but he also said something that made me sit up…
“There are always things we can do differently or better and we welcome constructive criticism.”
By a happy coincidence , I’ll be in Glasgow on Saturday and Sunday, and Neil, I can be both constructive and critical in equal measures.
I’ll send you an email and we’ll have a chat. I’ve got a few ideas which you might want to hear.
It won’t hurt any of us to listen to each other.
And it’ll do your street cred good to be seen in better company than you’ve been keeping of late…
Caption competiton…yesterdays picture,
Combine wit with brevity  and you have  the winner…

Some good stuff last night, nice to see the lads playing with a smile on their face, and the support 🙂

Thought Broonie had a good game and lustig brings a bit of class and control to the right hand side of the defence.

Next round will need to be bit more control, I.E. park the bus and hit on the break and finish the job at paradise.

COYBIG…. Happy days

Did I actually read this….

Assuming you are taking the mick…we can discuss our transfer policy when we tumble out of the Chumps league.

Well done to the Red Imps,I thought that they were a credit to there club, they played with skill and determination in a structured and disciplined way, they always carried a goal threat, much belying there part time status.
Cellic played last night with the fast flowing movement, always looking for the ball type of style with two good wingers, always stretching there opponents and creating many, many goal scoring oppertunities, fantastic to see.
Joe allan £6 mill.yes please,£13 mill.no thanks,we have our own Scott Allan who with proper coaching could perhaps reach Joes level.
Kolo Toure could be perhaps the short term solution that we need to add experiance and guidance to the defence. Shane Duffy would also be a good solution mibbee aye mibbee naw.

Johnbhoy/Deadhead, I’m ultra-capable of criticissm, also of applause. The core of JBs argument is fucking stupid; we’re left with (in his opinion) lacking , not just a squad, BUT A TEAM. Come on, you’re taking the fucking piss?
Also and more critically, you’ve fucking missed Lawwell in yer OUT proposal. Fuck me! Mer brains in a fuckin’ pork pie.
Brendan doesn’t know what most of us know: OUT, from back line going forward, and I’ll repeat OUT in case you weren’t watching/listening: Ambrose, Boyatta, Brown, Bitton, Forrest, Ciftci, – can’t think clearly enough to identify more. But that leaves spare cash for signings.
With current squad, maybe play; Gordon, Lustig/Fisher, Sviatchenko, Mulgrew, Tierney; Janko, Ajer, Commons (roaming), Roberts, Griffiths, Dembele. More or less 4,3,3 with intelligence allowed to flourish and agree to restrict men in their box to 3/4 except at corners. Saves us having to beat, not only ‘them’, but us too.
Hope! Hope!
Hail, Hail.
Enjoy Glasgow, (FN difficult not to)

perhaps the mass hysteria from some on here after last weeks result will finally disappear, as said last week it was only half time, and I thought we played well for most of the game last night, with a few standouts, broony slaughtered last week, great game last night, paddy Roberts brilliant, get him signed now, griff should have scored a hat rick, all round decent tempo , pace and ability, but not perfect by any means long way to go but at least we are on the right road.
Brendan will get it right as long as we continue to support him, last night fucking brilliant and as long as the chairman gets his finger out of his arse and starts to spend some cash, sort it peter FFS

Well I was pleasantly suprised to see Brendan opt for 3-5-2 going into an important and potentially massive banana skin of a game in Europe.
It has long been my preferred formation and one which if played properly guarantees the type of Football most would agree with at Celtic.
We destroyed them allover the park first half and probably should have been done and dusted at half time.
I had a feeling they would come out fighting second half pride can raise the game of lesser players and so it proved to be.
Several little negatives sprung up for me one being Griffiths inability to put away one on ones at this level needs to worked on.
Great strikers do not pass up on these opportunities and it is my opinion (has been since he arrived) that this is an area he is lacking in.
The other was Svietchenko switching off second half and getting caught out with a ball over the top.
Much was made about Ambrose’s part in last weeks disaster and while little was said about Eriks part in that (favouritism plays a large part in this) he does seem to have a wee issue with switching off when we are coasting.
Could well be a bit of arrogance when facing lesser opposition I suppose time will tell o that score though I reckon a quiet word might well do the trick.
Overall though a good nights work with far more to be optimistic about.
Next round will be an entirely different matter that[‘s for sure.
Be interesting to hear the thoughts on the inverted wingers deployed last night which for me worked a treat though could have been swapped second half to mix it up I felt.
Both wingers done well which bodes well so let’s hope they continue to do so?

Don’t think the manager wanted too much out the second half with 2 huge games coming up. Don’t see why he would change the wingers they played well. Obviously Sinclair would mix it up

I think the foot came off the gas and they were determined not to leave embarrassed.
Fair play to them they ket it down to 3 and could possibly have scored 1 themselves.
Job done we move on.

Charlie,

Just about every aspect of last night was positive. The attacking play in the first half, controlling the game in the second(for most of it), and the play of several individuals.

The Imps are a very fit team and I doubt that they are truly part time. Someone on CQN suggested that eight of them are full time players. Anyway, if I was an Imps fan, I’d be proud of my team.

Great to hear Stephen McManus on Celtic TV. He knows his stuff and praised Dembele to the skies. We have a good one there.

The one concern was the defence and their ability to deal with an over the top ball.

There was nothing wrong with his system Monti (Griffiths 40 goals are testament to that) and I have no doubt Brendan will deploy it when the time is right as when it is played correctly it can be as effective as any other.

Deilas approach was this..
Why have 2 or 3 different systems for different opposition when you can simply concentrate on and perfect one that is suitable for all?
To me that made sense becuse within that system depending on how you operate the 2 FB’s determined whether it was an attacking or defensive setup.
Unfortunately for him player sales injuries particularly in the defence caused constant disruptions to his plans.
Also the attitude of some key men also undermined him.
Lat night the energy and movement were not any different from what it was he wanted them to achieve.
Some were up for it and on the evidence of the past 2 years some clearly weren’t.
Was the side that swept away a part time outfit from Gibralter anymore clinical or exiting as the one that pumped Motherwell 7-0 or drew 3-3 with Inter Milan?
I would argue not.
Celtic never played with 1 up under Deila Celtic played with 4 attacking players with one striker leading it.
No different in effect than the 4 in attack last night being led by 2 strikers.
He’s gone but I doubt 4-2-3-1 has especially in Europe should we go through.

Great Diary. Hope you enjoy imparting some of your knowledge on Doncaster though I fear he may be ‘otherwise engaged’.
If the Bhoys can replicate the 1st half last night against Astana I think we have little to fear. Worth noting that, as far as I could see, Astana’s plastic pitch is far, far superior to Red Imps which looked a couple of sizes too big for the area it covers. Astana’s appears to fit nicely and I didn’t notice rubber pellets flying all over the shop yesterday as they did last week.
In Brendan we trust…….and (most of) the players too.
Pity the same can’t be said of the board; a board led (poorly) by a bean-counter who has no clue about ‘speculate to accumulate’ but knows for sure that ‘tuppence is tuppence’. What a fanny. (and I’m not talking Joe Allen money here; that was never going to happen and I understand that, but at least a C/H FFS, maybe around 5-6 mill.) Now, work to be done……..

Gordon – 5 – Heehaw to do (lets be fair now)

Tierney – 6 – stuck in a few good tough tackles when needed. Subbed for Ajar(5)
Erik – 7 – Rock steady and almost scored from corner
Lustig – 7 – Goal and composed performance
Broony – 7 – A chicken WITH a heid and boots on. Welcome back!

McGregor – 6- Energetic first half, absent second
Armstrong – 8 – Great game, all over the park and driving forward
Forrest – 6 – See McGregor. Subbed for Izzy (4)
Roberts – 8 – A joy to watch ( dunno about orange boots though) and the arseholes nect to me moaning about him trying to beat 3 or 4 players can fuck right off!

Dembele – 6 – Promising if a little off pace but just needs time and that first goal. Griffiths was giving “strong” advice so partnership gelling. Subbed for Ciftci(4)

Griffiths – 8 – Grabbed the game when needed and pushed everyone onto victory. Growing in stature day by day and becoming THE leading Celt.

Manager – 7 – Great tactics and what a half hour. Great enthusiasm and encouragement on touchline ( and barracking!) which was good to see after the Deila ( who>-Ed) Laissez Faire days. Wore brown shoes though so loses at least 1 point for those. Onwards and upwards.

Much better but please look at who we were playing. If Dedryck Boyata makes it at Celtic I am still in with a shout and I am in my 50s. Get real. We haven’t played a real game yet. The challenge starts next week and we are woefully unprepared. I don’t expect any one to sign today. But if you seriously believe that this is a set of ‘happy campers’ you are delusional. There are more than a few who know they have no future. Why is James Forrest in the team? This scares the crap out of me. I don’t care if he does OK against amateurs or Morton in the cup, he has been indulged too much and for too long. Get rid of him. If he was going to make it at Celtic a team would be being built around him. There are at least five others in the same boat. Scott Allan is not going to make it at Celtic either. Two managers have looked at him and he is not making the starting line-up. He will be requesting a move soon. there is a chance that we might get some money for him, unlike Forrest. Still giving the ball away in the middle of the park too frequently but overall a bit better. Still far short of CL qualification class.

Agree about griffiths needing to work on one and ones, good performance last night in first half, like the3-5-2 system but need more covering back by the wingers if it is to succeed against better opposition,.

Charlie D

BJF , griffiths is in his third season with us now I think , not so sure if he will match the 40 odd goals of last season this Tim around but once dembelle gets off the mark I think they will probably share the goal tally between them , got the makings of a classic Celtic front two partnership ahead of us there I’d say.

Unfortunately did not have anything on it. But I thought it was going to be about 7 after half an hour. Lots of chances created but many mistakes made. yes it is better but it wasn’t a ‘real game’. No one expected them to go through. We know what we have is not good enough because it is basically the same team that failed in the past two years. You cannot judge anything based ion a game against part-timers. On paper the result does not look very impressive but their keeper had a great game.

What game were you all watching ? The midfiels fell out it badly in the second half,,,they pushed on from the restart and nearly scored. Issy on to make a back four/half back to shore up that side. Never mind should have scored…you’ve got to take them when they arrive and Roberts put it on a plate for Dembele and he still made an arse of it. His second touch is a tackle.
Griff leathered him at one point when he had to track back and tackle again because Dembele was lazy. He even strolled off being subbed and makes Cifti look athletic. It pains me sorely to say this but I will be very surprised if he scores 15 or more.
Sign their keeper.

Am I the only one who’s a bit concerned about the fact we play Leicester at 5:30 on Saturday before a 7 hour flight to Astana and a game on Tuesday night and then the following Saturday play Barca at 6 in Dublin before Astana again on the Tuesday? Much as they are high profile games, we could do without any injuries, particularly if the CL is to be our focus. Maybe I’m worrying unnecessarily. HH

WOW whit a crowd last night, over 55 thousand,to go to Cellic Park to watch European minnows in Brendan Rodgers first home game and it wisny against thems John, they must be thickos ae John.
Speaking about they shites they tell me that Duncasters spent £250,000.so that huns could watch thems last season,to the feckin Broadcasters, how good of him, spending oor money so that keech can watch well keech. Its diddys like him that make your skin crawl, they get LIQUIDISED relinquish there debt,we on the other hand still owe £17 mill. to the COOP Bank,so when we are still moanin about the lack of team investment, remember the debt.
Yes the world isny fair, but haud yer heeds up high and remember we are TIMS and they are debt renaging cnuts.

Anyone else hearing Calum Patterson in with GMS to Hertz on year long loan deal ?

Bgbhoy

If I where in charge and loan out all the players we don’t need to the likes of Aberdeen and hearts. Your Gms, Scott Allan’s etc. Make them as strong as possible to shite all over the Huns but as always they can’t play against us

Callum Paterson you must be kidding. Is this the level we are operating at? If so then, yes, we are thick and are being taken for granted.
