Celtic Diary Tuesday May 24: The Goosebumps of Anticipation

I have to say that is the strangest title for a Diary I’ll ever, ever use.

In front of a crowd at Celtic Park estimated to be just under 90,000 , new manager Brendan Rodgers told us what it felt like to be in charge.

Alright, maybe not 90,000, but it was certainly between 10 and 15,000.

And it looks like some bastards are  in our seats

All of this would certainly have  made him feel welcome, and probably made a watching Ronny Deila feel a little inadequate. If he was watching, of course.

Rodgers held a press conference, which is here;

The first Press Conference

and then went out to meet the fans, which is here;

The Unveiling

Then he probably went for a lie down, to relieve the pain in his shoulders which suddenly appeared to have taken on a huge weight of expectation.

“My message is that we’ll do our very best and I’m here because of them . I’ve been a Celtic supporter all my life and I’m very lucky now to have been given the opportunity to step out of the stands and on to the sideline and manage the team.

“So hopefully they will understand that when you have that passion and emotion with the club, myself and the staff and the players will be doing absolutely everything we can to meet the challenges that are set for us – that’s to dominate here in Scotland and to qualify for the Champions League.

“For that we need them. This is an incredible football club, the support here is phenomenal and my idea is to get the stands filled again.

He paid tribute to Dermot Desmond, who played a large part, .i,e, the wages, in bringing Rodgers to the club;

“That was a big swaying factor . I met Dermot in London along with Peter and I could see the hunger and the passion in his eyes. He wasn’t just talking through any old spiel to get me here. He has a real genuine passion and love for the club.

“I was aware of Dermot Desmond, the name and the association with his past. But I came away really impressed by him.

“Then, following that, he made a couple of really important calls to me. We had a real long conversation one night. We were about half an hour on the phone. Dermot made it pretty clear that I was the one they wanted here.”

He hadn’t asked for the job, as he explains here..

“I don’t have an agent, I do my own deals.  I was just waiting to see what the possibilities were.

“There were a few opportunities, but Peter rang me when Ronny said he was going to leave. I’m a Celtic supporter, I love the club so, out of respect, I thought I would go and speak to both Peter and Dermot.

“I have to say they were very impressive. They were very realistic in terms of where the club is at. They felt the need to hopefully push it on.

“When you weigh it all up and have that sense the club really want you, it means a lot to you. It’s not then so much about money or anything like that. It was purely that Celtic wanted me here as manager.

“After weighing it all up and speaking to family we felt it was going to be a good experience for us.

“Don’t get me wrong, I have had a number of guys who have said ‘Don’t go – why would you go?’ but this is Celtic and it’s different. It is a challenge, of course. It is a different market, a different budget but this can be a wonderful opportunity to come and help the players. If I can help the game in Scotland then great, but this is about helping Celtic.”

I’m hoping that I’m reading this correctly, and if I am then we could be in for a sharp upturn in fortunes.

He’s a Celtic fan, there’s no doubt about that.

He’s a good manager, there’s no doubt about that. He’s proved himself down south.

He’s saying he’s come to help Celtic out.

Or, “he’s been summoned to the cause and is here to do his bit”- like any one of us would do.

Except, in fairness, he’s probably better at it than us.

Then he spoke about the players….

I have to assess it a wee bit more Sometimes you can watch games and have an idea but it’s not until you work with the players.

“What I can say is there are a lot of talented players and I’m really looking forward to meeting the captain. Scott Brown is someone I’ve admired from a distance for a number of years and his drive and determination and quality is going to be important for me and the team.

“I know there are a number of other good players as well but until I get to work with them on a daily basis and we can come together then I can probably give a clearer idea then.”

And is he here just to bide his time until a big job in the English league comes along ? As no doubt will be the media line for the next few months…

“Unfortunately, most times now it is not the manager who decides how long you are at a club, It’s normally the club. But when you come into any club, you come in for the longer term.

“I look at Martin O’Neill, he was here for five years. Neil Lennon was here for four seasons. So you want to bring success to the club and however long that takes, you want that opportunity.

“Time is the big thing you want as a manager, but ultimately you don’t get that. You’ve got to win games and you’ve got to perform.

“But at this moment in time, I’ve got no thoughts of Celtic being a stepping stone and moving back into the Premier League.

“I don’t want to work in the Premier League for 20 years, hence the reason I came up here.

“This is a wonderful country. It has some top- class coaches and managers. You are working in a totally different market at a totally different level.

“For me, it is a challenge. However long the challenge is, I will be here.

“You don’t know what the future holds. For me, to come here and manage and be successful – it’s certainly not going to be for a year, that’s for sure.

“When I left Liverpool, I could have been in a Premier League job the next day. On the Monday, I got a call from a club. But I wanted to have time out from the intensity of managing big clubs and the pressures that come with it.

“Swansea contacted me in January when Garry Monk left. But I was always clear I wanted to break out. It was always clear that I wanted to go back in the summer.

“I could have waited and maybe got another job in the Premier League, but I hope to be managing for another 20-odd years.

“The chance to manage Celtic might not come again, which is why I felt I wantedto talk and then be here today.”

There’s little else he could do but say words along those lines, though don’t get me wrong, it’s great to hear them, and he says them with no little conviction.

Leigh Griffiths made sure he was in good books from the first possible opportunity when he carried the League trophy out yesterday, showing a remarkable degree of sobriety for any Hibernian supporter.

Though the real story here is that Leigh hasn’t let go of the thing since it was presented after the Motherwell game. And didn’t seem to want to yesterday either;

He’s not the only one hanging on to something precious. The picture of the day has to be this supporter , who, having been unable to locate a scarf,  improvised during a rendition of “walk on”

There’s been a lot of reaction to the appointment, not least over in County Antrim, where they may be a suggestion of editorial bias…

Though I did have to look twice at the bottom left of the page.

Having become accustomed to “rangers ” stories placed in the papers to counter any good news eminating from Celtic Park, I actually thought it was a statement on the Ibrox transfer policy, but then that would have been “We Buy Any Crap “.

The Record are preparing their response…

As for the opposition, Derek McInnes of Aberdeen has welcomed the new manager, recognising that as Celtic’s main rivals, he too, will have to up his game, as has Tommy Wright of St. Johnstone, who are another possible contender for honours next season.

But there’s been no word from Ibrox, or their manager, who once worked under Rodgers down south. Ah, wait, we were talking about contenders….

In fact, come to think of it, there’s been no word from Warburton about anything…

Three “rangers ” players, Law, Clark and Templeton have been released, not from hospital, but from the club, without a word from their boss, which is odd, and adds fuel to rumours that he is embarrassed by the clubs official line after the Scottish cup final and is now seeking a way out.

From Football League World…although we told you this months ago

Warburton, current manager of Scottish giants Rangers, could very well be manager at the iPro Stadium next season.

The Rams have had a very disappointing campaign, having spent a sizeable amount of money on transfer fees and lost out on a trip to Wembley, after a 3-2 defeat on aggregate to Hull City.

It is unlikely interim head coach Darren Wassall will be given the job on a permanent basis, after taking over from the departing Paul Clement in February.

Mark Warburton led the Bees to a fifth-place finish in the Championship in 2015, before losing to Middlesbrough in the Play-Off semi-finals.

Actually, the PR assault from Ibrox does suggest a massive deflection from something, and maybe this is it.

For those of you who don’t like reading about the Ibrox club, bear with me, because it is relevant.

They are certainly deflecting , along with the SFA, from something….

Tomorrow, after all, those adverts placed by the Resolution 12 guys go live, and part 2 of the Summer of Fun begins….

And don’t at all be surprised if Joey Barton, the midfielder rumoured to be joining “rangers ” doesn’t end up there…especially when they check out his twitter feed..

It’s going to be a wonderful summer…

Many many quality entries to the caption competition yesterday, but Carl Jungle Bhoy scooped it, and saved us the bother , while Charlie Saiz is on his sabbatical, of outting the words on the picture..

In the land of the deaf, blind and compromised, the squinty-eyed King calls the tune

todays caption competition shows Peter Lawwells delight and relief at no longer having to run the playing side of the club as well, or does it ?

torrancebhoy we miss out on so much with our fabulous support,w should be holding a Celticfhest at CP with bands and celebs to the fore, for me it would go down a bomb with world wide sales whereby our club and charities would benefit in both finance and exposure,oh that there was someone at CP that had the initiative to see this come to fruition, last night just another show of what we are about all colour/joy.

It is time to put away what has happened under Ronnie.
I thought the pain of the semi final, watching the Hun directors at close quarters, goading us,then travelling back down south, from Glasgow airport that night, and watching as the Celtic family, tried to be strong, but we were at a loss, and sat in the corners away from the klans,in humiliation and disbelief,at what we had witnessed.
Then Friday and the announcement of Brendan Rodgers and yes the gloom is lifting,a smile back on ma coupon. Things getting better. But Saturday at approx 4.50 ya fuckin dancer.
The light of the world shins down again, bathed in glorious sunshine, out of the darkness rose another band of rebels,to claim victory for the green.
God bless you Hibs,Stokesy,Henderson, Stubbsy, I will be forever grateful to you,for easing my pain.
Now here’s the thing, if that was any other team, than them, would the violent scenes we saw progressed as it did.
No chance. Fans of other clubs would probably have stayed in the stand and applauded them, maybe not the jambos but who knows, but by doing this, all the build up of euphoria, and adrenalin, or drink as the case maybe by the Hibs fans making their way down to the opposition end of the pitch would have stopped their aggression there and then.
If opposition fans stayed in the stand no matter the gloating, then everyone was safe. Well apart from the rangers players who were attacked, if we are led to believe this story.Though if it is true then they should be dealt with in the proper manner.
Though nobody asked Hearts to be put out the league or cup, when Lenny was attacked.

Well said jimmybee,a true tim,one that keeps his love for the tic close to his luv machine. You can just sense the change the optimism and the delight of the support, one of there ain,a proven Manager with a good Management record, just what we wanted.Well done to Dermot for making it happen, just as i had almost given up on this board. Was i alone in being glad to see Brendan sat next to the rottweiler Lawwell, you just knew that there would be no awkward press questions asked with auld soorpus sat next,as for Bankier a pure clown, you get no confidence when he starts a press conference.
Is it true that Monti has joined the Hibees support,i knew that his love for Stokesy was all devouring and that his new trademark post was now Stubbsy oot.

Yes, we should be filling the stands no matter what because to some extent it admits defeat not to. However, Celtic and the future of HONEST Scottish football is very much at stake in all the current rebellion. That must not be lost either in the euphoria over our new manger or in our eagerness to win everything. While the game is tainted, the trophies are too.

I think Scottish football is going to go through a mini revival that may surprise some. Without getting ahead of myself I feel positive. Dermot Desmond thinking fuck it watching Hun hierarchy rubbing our faces in it has done the trick. Also believe sites like this with our demands was a catalyst for change. Kudos to the admins

What does it take to admit you might have been wrong? Balls, I guess. Well, that counts me out and mike seems to be able to prove it given his “last post” yesterday. However, I have a belly hungry for humble pie and I am currently stuffing it into my stupid old face. You see, I expressed doubts about Brendan Rogers. I was not convinced about the man and his ability to do the job at hand for Celtic. I was far from certain about his “balls” and his ability to address our major problems, the CEO and the board as well as recalcitrant players. I was not on board with “he’s a real Celtic man” or “he’s from Ireland and knows about the club, its ethos and its history”, all very admirable qualities but not what on their own will bring the success we all crave. Finally, though incomparably more experienced than Ronny Deila at handling the press – a failure of those in charge rather than the man himself – and given his native tongue is actually the same as the gutter journalists, though one will have grave doubts once their interpretation of what he says is in print, I had not seen in my research – minimal, I ashamedly admit – anything that would assure me he could put the media in the trash folder where it belongs. With all these doubts and uncertainties running through my “peabrain”, I could not immediately accept that Brendan was, without doubt, currently the right and only man for the job. One thing I did acknowledge was I had no actual alternative manager in mind who could better him nor one whom we could afford who could be better. I was, therefore, only willing to wait and see and, I confess, with a certain amount of baited breath.

So, why have I changed my mind. It may seem naïve but simply because of the interviews and unveiling yesterday. I discovered that having a “Celtic man” at the helm has a massive impact on the soul of the club, dumbfoundingly expressed by the turnout for his unveiling and, as determination and hunger can win games for inferior teams, so fire in the belly and an understanding of need, can give an incomparable advantage to a manager. It provides him with an insight into what is wanted by all sections of the club but particularly by supporters. That has probably been missing from the heart of our management and squads for a while now,
“I’m a Celtic supporter, I love the club so, out of respect, I thought I would go and speak to both Peter and Dermot…….“When you weigh it all up and have that sense the club really want you, it means a lot to you. It’s not then so much about money or anything like that. It was purely that Celtic wanted me here as manager. After weighing it all up and speaking to family we felt it was going to be a good experience for us.”
He went on to paraphrase the famous words of Big Jock by saying he wanted players who would play for the jersey, the one that fits them. That has needed saying for a long time now. So, hanging my head in shame, I admit his words say an awful lot, more than I had imagined.

The situation with the board is somewhat different and I did not find Peter Lawwell’s claim that Brendan would be as free as Ronny to manage football affairs as he sees fit entirely, if in any way, convincing. However, I think I detected something in Brendan’s words to indicate he expects to be given a free rein and if all the offers in other places are to be believed, it would take no great effort for him to tell Peter and his cronies to stuff it. However, like many on here, I think Mr. Desmond has had Peter bent over the proverbial desk with trousers dropped and caned somewhat – I only hope he did not take it further. Brendan certainly gave the impression Mr. Desmond was the rider and Peter the mere horse in this race. That being so, I am tending towards Brendan having control of the reins of the football management filly.
“This is an incredible football club, the support here is phenomenal and my idea is to get the stands filled again.”

The final influence on my thinking was the control of questions and answers. Although it looked like PR finally stopped arse-scratching and did some proper work by preventing questions that hinted, even faintly, of anything other than Celtic exclusivity at the press conference, when challenged, Brendan made short shrift of any sleekitness, exemplified superbly in his response to the Gerard nonsense. It was but a tiny, though I believe significant, indication of an ability to dictate the direction and tone of media interviews.

So, with head bowed in humble submission, I welcome Brendan Rogers to Celtic. I wish him well and hope he brings the success his introduction to us seems to promise. I am amazed, elated and inspired by the reception of the fans yesterday. You truly are the best, the one and only. I have never been so willing to admit defeat to all of you who believed in Brendan from the start. I hope he fulfills all our dreams – yours and mine are the same. I have not looked forward to a season so much in years and years, certainly since Martin O’Neil. However, being of the years and experience that I am, I will still wait and see . Oh, and please stop judging our seasons on the European qualifiers. They can no longer be regarded as the bench mark until we have built a proper team. In my experience, that takes time. Even Big Jock needed a season and more to fine tune an already outstanding group of players.

The wean he put his crayons down
The end of kindergarten had come around
The paper he folded and put away

His team you see, had been found out

He bawled, a tantrum, I’ll get my way
I’ll make them see it or I will ruin their day

He did not mind that he had told lies
For telling tales was how he survived
He knew they feared him, it made him brave
To cheat and always be depraved

To say I am over the moon with happiness and excitement is an understatement…..
You could see it in BR eyes and smile how much he is delighted to be here and us fans feel the same. Something great is coming our way make no mistake….this could be 1 of the greatest period in our history coming up.
Again I have to say a big thankyou to DD as he is the 1 that has made this happen and we are very lucky to have a real billionaire at our club who genuinely loves our club too.
It’s going to be quality over quantity as I think at most BR will sign only 4 players but these players will be of a higher quality than what we have right now.
I bought my first season ticket back in 1988, which was £80 back then…..sadly I gave it up 8 years ago for personal reasons….i.e. Got married and had a family……but times change, not wanting to go into details but lets just say my wife fucked off and now I am single dad bringing up my 2 girls on my own…..but with BR now here I really am ready to return and buy a season ticket for me and my girls……this is the happiest I have felt in a long time and I can’t wait to get back to paradise with my girls to get behind BR and watch Celtic play the Celtic way…

You know with reading the diary every day and also the comments made by my fellow tims, would it not be a great idea to have an annual get together so that we can all meet in person as I feel I know you all so well…it would be nice to put a face against the name…..what do you think Ralph and co?…..I’m sure you could organise something and we would all love to meet up and celebrate everything Celtic.

The presser was certainly enjoyable and it strengthened the feeling of good will that has surrounded he club since negotiations started to bring Brendan in.

Whilst it is right to welcome BR to the club, the real congrats at this point belong to the Board and, given BR’s comments, to DD. They have correctly received flak over the last season, and now they deserve the highest praise for pushing the boat out with this appointment.
Let’s be cautious here. After the initial shock of Ronnie Who, there was a good feeling surrounding his appointment initially…..the introduction of two training sessions per day; the attention to diet and fitness etc. All of these aspects suggested a new dawn for the club. Now we all know how that turned out.
Whilst I have high hopes for BR, let us remember nothing has been achieved yet. I should correct that by saying nothing has been achieved yet on the park. Ultimately that is what will count.
What has been achieved so far, is a PR triumph by both the recruitment and the presentation of BR. The important stuff is still to come and I am sure that Brendan knows that.
We can contribute to his success by managing our expectations…..let him make a few mistakes at the beginning, and judge him in the second half of the season. CL qualification or not.

That is why I was so hesitant at the start. However, I do feel a sense of real optimism akin to Martin O’Neil’s arrival. In both instances our patience was at rock bottom and on the previous the rewards came. I do not expect as swift a response as Martin was able to get – lightening very rarely strikes twice and all that – but me old bones feel “there’s somethin’ in the air”. Just as long as we don’t go bonkers about European qualification. I cannot stress enough we do not have the quality of team as yet to guarantee qualification. The teams we meet now, poor as they are, have as good if not better chance of getting through than we have. A little more patience and, yes sufferance, is required in order to enjoy the greater rewards.

Pensioner,

I share the feeling of optimism and I think we have a professional manager in place now. This is the best that I have felt about a managerial appointment since MON. WGS …I had reservations about initially but came to love him, although his football tailed off in the last year. I had higher hopes of Mowbray but these wete quickly quashed! Neil ….I felt was the wrong appointment…..too early for him, but he served his apprenticeship and clearly loved the club. How could you not admire his performance in the face of the bigotry and threats to life and limb! I have already spoken at length on RD.
This appoitment on the face of it brings in an even better manager than MON was when he arrived.
However, he will need time because we have a collection of talented players but no team. There are two glaring problems….only one striker apparently(despite our performance in the last game); and a hole in the centre of the defence. Getting these fixed before the last round of the qualifiers will be difficult. Once into the group stages, we should look at a couple of years before we can qualify for the next round, given how our conquerors, Malmo performed.
For me, one of the most hopefull things thst BR said was that it is not about the individual player but about the collective. Given Celtic’s relative lack of resources this is the only way forward in Europe for the club. Leicester demonstrated that ably this season but they had to have luck. Chelsea, MU were off the boil, and MC self destructed when they indicated that they were replacing their manager.

Like Brendan, I cannot wait for it all to get started,

Good comments re – controlled expectations.
Remember O’Neill inherited Henrik , Lambert ,Petrov ,Moravcik , McNamara ; however , I think the difference between recent years and now is that DD has decided to get involved.( I agree with PhilMac that this was a DD production irrespective of what was said yesterday).
Brendan’s comments about long phone conversations with DD were , I think very telling , and give me optimism that he , DD , is prepared to back this man to the hilt ; a feeling he has a point he wants to prove , we shall see .
Interesting times ahead for us , I think.

Ah agree. If Brenden fails…then it will be seen as a DD failure. And DD never made his billions by coming second.

Seriously, nail on head, the big,big difference from then and now.Scotland did have men of quality, especially in the jounalistic field. Now they are gutless no talent journeymen.Mcilvanies,Montford,Macpherson,at least they were not bigots, nowadays when the BBC Scotland come on air you can see when the tic are mentioned there lips curl as for the gutter press, they are despicable.
When i left school you new bigotry was rife,i also experienced it but it was hidden at least, now its on show in all of its ignorance.Scotland will never prosper till we get rid of it.

Like mike, I cannot remember seeing this before but I do remember a great deal of what is in it. I always said the real difference between Celtic and Rangers supporters was the line that Celtic fans would never cross. I believe that line has grown for Celtic and practically disappeared for the followers of Rangers who will only support anything Ibrox and what it stands for. If this is to change, then the whole Ibrox experience must be completely eradicated.

Good video Iancelt thanks for sharing.
Dunno about you but I was waiting on Waddell saying alright Mary doll, he looked so much like Rab C without the vest..
Interesting comment from him too, our fans will go home and beat up their wife’s if we lose. Couldn’t make it up.
The year of the video, I was at high school, only a small number of us,from our Hun village went to the boys only school of our lady’s high in Motherwell,my sisters went to holy cross which was girls only in Hamilton. We had to run the gauntlet of hate every morning, being egged and spat on etc,as the Papes.
Funny thing is never any bother at primary school, but as soon as we went to high school all the bother started. My own take,it was through the lodges and bands in and around the area that my school friends from primary turned.
My friends from primary, soon made their way into the bands to be drummers or flutists, and so the friendships were over. Anyone who blames schools, has got it totally wrong IMO.The hatred and the bigotry comes when parents allowing their young ones to join the lodge or the bands.
Big fight at the end of the video was common place amongst the Huns. You could always see a big black circle opening up,at ibrox or Celtic park,in their end,and the fighting would begin.
They did it all the time. Then throw bottles, and hit only the young or the disabled down the front. Fuckin muppets.

Monti,

First of all we have all been taking the piss out of you while you were away. I know, we are too scared to do it when you are on here. Mind you, nobody has said “Monti Out”. That comes if we don’t qualify for Europe. That’s two seasons you have had and we are no further forward.

Everything else has been euphoric because of Brendan. I take it you are pleased – is that possible?

Can recommend you watch the video lancelt67 posted. It should be a must for all Celts especially the young guys who might not quite believe how long we have endured. If only there was an iota of journalism like that today. I am sure Cliff Hanley and Jimmy Reid would have made short shrift of the Ibrox shenanigans.

Hope you are well and Edinburgh still with a castle. Did you enjoy Dundee? I knew you couldn’t wait to go 🙂

Final link for you https://www.change.org/p/nicola-sturgeon-resignation-of-nicola-sturgeon-from-the-role-as-msp-of-govan-and-as-the-first-minister. Sorry, not sure how the techy stuff works. There must be a better word than disillusioned.

I quite liked joey Barton as a player to be honest, think he will be a right asset to them. I would rather have Barton than Broony in my team, but only my opinion.
Who cares if he said he was a Celtic fan i don’t give a monkeys.
Players who supported them have graced our hoops with great dignity,so I don’t buy into all this guff on Twitter etc.
Let’s build our team to make sure Barton is forgotten about, and it’s our players on the back pages, and no one else matters.

The tic is my only concern, but you must be aware of your competitors, knowledge is power.i am certain that Brendan will be aware of all his main rivals and players, how they set out etc.Anyone with any sense would have announced his arrival on the last day of the season,to give them an advantage, but they have season tickets to sell.
