Celtic Diary Tuesday March 15: Celtic Listens To Fans!

Celtic have decided to subsidise supporters who are planning to attend the match against Kilmarnock this weekend.

Every adult ticket purchased this week from the Celtic Park Ticket Office for the game against Kilmarnock will be discounted, by Celtic, by £6. Celtic Football Club will meet the cost of this, and every supporter who has already secured their seat to get behind the team this weekend will also be able to claim their discount based on their original method of payment.

That means that for this weekend’s game, Celtic supporters can get behind their team in numbers once again for only £20 per adult ticket instead of £26.

Here in Stoke, the local EPL club pays for away supporters travel. There are other clubs around Europe who do this as well.

The EPL are about to cap away price tickets, and Celtic should be commended for this gesture.

For those who say that Kilmarnock will still get their money, and so on, so what ?

Just don’t buy any pies or drinks. Take a packed lunch with you and eat it before you go in.

The important thing is that the club have put their proverbial money where their mouth is and taken the hit themselves.

Well done.

Scott Brown agrees, though he was hardly likely not to;

“This is a great move by the Club and I am sure it will be welcomed by our supporters. We hope it will allow even more fans to come and back the team at Rugby Park.

“Our supporters are everything to us and it is a privilege to be able to play in front of such a large and passionate support everywhere we go. We saw it on Saturday at Firhill and felt the difference a huge travelling support can make.

“We respect and value the huge commitment our fans make in supporting the team and we are so grateful for everything they do for us. We were delighted to win such an important game on Saturday and now our total focus is on achieving another win at Kilmarnock – and we want to do this with as many fans as possible behind us.”

The Association of Supporters club welcomed the move…

Celtics announcement today that will see all fans travelling to Kilmarnock charged £20 for adult tickets with Celtic covering the remaining £6 of the ticket cost price, is one that is fully welcomed by us.

We had planned a protest before the game to highlight the massive inconsistencies with ticket pricing and policy in Scotland but this has now been postponed to allow us to focus fully on supporting our team and also support this gesture by the club.

We have made our views on ticket prices and difficulties faced by the away fan to the club over a long period and we are delighted that they have listened.

The time to dissect the circumstances of this decision is not now and rest assured our voice won’t be silenced in the future because of this.

We still believe ticket prices are too high across the board and that the £20 price should be the maximum an adult should pay to attend a football match in Scotland.

We will take stock after Saturday on what our next move will be.

The club have made clear the value of the away support with this gesture. That fact cannot be argued. Just as the EPL made clear of the value of an away support last week with their announcement of the £30 away ticket cap.

We want the SPFL to take the lead from our near neighbours and call for them to introduce a £20 away cap for next season.

Today’s announcement could change ticket pricing in Scotland but we have to play our part. Let’s buy tickets and take our largest away support to Kilmarnock for a number of seasons.

Show the club and Scottish football that Twenty’s Plenty.

Its more about the getsure from the club, which does show they have listened, than the amount, but nevertheless, drink  it responsibly, and remember..

Well, not necessarily at this game, but certainly at a game in the future..plans are afoot for the police to keep an eye on supporters at the upcoming cup semi final.

No doubt so they can watch it later and make sure they can arrest enough people to justify the huge bill that comes along with the game.

to keep that particular fire burning, the SPFL have announced an enquiry into sectarian singing and overcrowding at the recent game at Hamilton;

The match delegate’s report is understood to have highlighted what is described as ‘sustained’ pro-IRA chanting during the 1-1 draw.

It is also believed that attention has been drawn to areas of potential overcrowding in the stand behind the goal, which housed much of the Celtic support. The delegate report is understood to point out that some fans with tickets elsewhere in that stand, abandoned their seats to congregate together elsewhere.

Host club Accies and Police Scotland will be asked for their comments on those issues, while Celtic will be probed for answers on fan behaviour.

Both clubs have received copies of the report and following the next Board meeting of the SPFL on Wednesday, March 23, an official investigation will be launched.

Here we go again.

Why do the support give them any excuse to lump us in with the crew from south of the river ?

Stop it.

In their eyes we are just the other side of the coin to that lot, and by feeding their agenda like this we are simply building a rod for our own backs.

If you don’t want to be forever reffered to as one half of the old firm, then move away from what many portray as a mirror image. If you give them the bullets, they will fire them.

Never mind the “what about them? “argument

Its invalid. Lets make sure own own doorstep is spotlessly clean before we tell others to tidy up.

Anyway, back to the league title race, and Inverness CT handyman Josh Magennis has a warning for Celtic…

“Everything is better at Aberdeen now and he Derek has been able to bring a real arrogance into their team – but in a really positive way.

“They genuinely feel they are going to win every single game and if you want to win leagues and push for cups and stuff then that’s what you need.

“I don’t know if they will the league as Celtic are a big club and they have the finances and a big squad to choose from.

“But Aberdeen are playing without any fear.

“It will go down to the wire and not be decided until the last couple of games so there is no reason why they can’t do it.

“The question is will they do it? We will have to wait and see but you would have to be criminally deluded not to worry if you’re Celtic.

“Any game that they don’t win they are giving the chance away to Aberdeen and both teams have to keep winning and hopefully the best team will take the trophy.

“For too long it was Rangers and Celtic going for the title but it’s a breath of fresh air that Aberdeen are taking them so close.

“A lot of people were sceptical when Rangers dropped out of the division that it would be a one team league.

“It’s fantastic Aberdeen have pushed them so far.”

Er, criminally deluded ?

If it’s a crime to suffer from delusions there’s going to be an awful lot of people locked up over the next few weeks. mostly in the media, to be fair, as a number of them persist in using the phrase “Old Firm”

A phrase which, as Cartuja from KDS illustrates here, belongs in the past.

But all of that makes for a good headline, and in one sense he’s right, Celtic should worry about the challenge from the Dons. More importantly, it keeps the media talking about the league race, generating interest and making it all seem rather exciting.

Mind you, i’m not worried.

They’ve a player in their side who hasn’t even mastered the art of walking the right way up, so at least there’s one player we can be fairly confident it shouldn’t be too difficult to take the ball off.

Actually, we should sign this guy. Most of our midfields passes would go straight to his feet.

Elsewhere, and the race for beds in the Celtic treatment room hotted up when yet to arrive new signing Kristoffer Ajer hurt himself in the opening game of the Norwegian season. He went off with an injured knee, and continues the tradition started by Ryan Christie of Celtic players getting injured before they even make their Celtic debut.

susan murphy stole the caption competition with this one, though the mick hucknall remark was not only funny, but would certainly provide society with a much needed service.

Today, make of this what you will…

Ralph,
What songs are being sung that are ” Sectarian “?
When 25,000 scum are singing about being up to their knees in Catholic blood and the Justice Secretary, Kenny Macaskill describes this as ” a wonderful atmosphere “, what exactly is it that Celtic fans are being ‘ investigated ‘ for?

Let the people sing, their stories and their songs and the music of their native land!

The repeated chants of “Up The ‘Ra” are unnecessary. But not surprised that Monti is OK with that sort of reprehensible and childish behaviour.

Some of you lot are apologists for bigots and sectarians and should be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves.

Monti is right on this the songs are not sectarian neither are they bigoted.
However it is 2016 not 1916 as some who sing them have a tendency to believe and as such are not acceptable any more.

I never mentioned songs. I mentioned fans, particularly the away support, chanting “Up The ‘Ra”.

This has nothing to do with Celtic and is entirely self-serving and infantile if you chant it at any football match.

Anyone supporting or making excuses for this conduct doesn’t have the best interests of the club at heart, and is in fact, damaging the club and therefore cannot be considered a Celtic fan but rather a selfish tube.

I think the resl issue here lays with peoples perception of the term IRA.
On one hand we have a group of Football fans romanticising about a Group of Volunteers defending their right to a free Country and on the other a Group of people who simply see atrocity and murder at the hands of terrorists.
This is the real issue here.
It is offensive to some and acceptable to others.
My argument is we have more than enough songs that have nothing to do with Political ideals or agendas can we not just stick to singing them?
Leave the rest on the Bus or in the Pubs and pick them up on the way out.

100% agree.

I, like you, personally believe that people should be able to chant about the IRA or whoever in their own home or private functions. That kind of political expression in paramount to a democracy.

However when it become a selfish and needless public spectacle which then effects others around you who do not share said politics then it is both indefensible and egocentric.

I think there is no disgusting faction in our away support. They are hard core Celtic supporters that pay good money, get over attended to by Scotland’s finest, give unqualified backing to our team on the field and sing their hearts out in support of Celtic. Get arrested for singing non sectarian and non bigoted songs. You have a negative opinion of our away support Plum – then that is your opinion. I think they are our finest and best.

I said “There is a disgusting element to the away support” which patently and clearly states that it is a small minority.

If you think that letting off smoke bombs and singing about terrorists is all part of the fun then you and I have vastly differing views on what is and isn’t acceptable behaviour at a football match.

The singing of songs celebrating the past and continued aspiration of Irish independence from a colonial invader and occupier seem natural to me at a gathering of Irish and proud Irish descendants still living in a country that has endemic sectarianism and bigots on very corner. As has been said the IRA has changed in nature over the years and now has ceased to exist after the agreement to end hostilities. That said to celebrate that aspiration and to celebrate our heritage I think it is fine to sing songs of freedom and annoy the locals. It is part of who we are and long may it be.

i started going to Celtic games in the early eighties and im not going to lie, i loved singing ira songs and all things Irish….even though i am Scottish but times have changed…society has changed.
if i am in private company or at a celtic supporters function then i have no problem singing all the classics…but now the media attention so strongly involved with every single game we play and not just in Scotland but around the world it reflects badly on our club when these songs are sung.
one other point is that not every Celtic fan is Irish and not every fan is Catholic and for too many of these fans the songs are very much unwelcome and cause unease.
we should stop using Celtic to voice any political view and only celebrate all good things about our club…..we have fantastic songs about our club….so why not sing them ?…..too often the away supporters only sing about the ira and Ireland …..why cant they stop this and sing about Celtic instead ?
im not saying you cant sing these songs….im saying just dont sing them at Celtic games……it only harms the reputation of our great club…and lets be honest our reputation has taken a bit of a beating of late

Ewan,

Excellent post. It hits so many nails on their heads.

One additional point is who does the deed and who pays for it?

People who sing certain songs expect others to pay the price for their actions. If they feel so strongly about their cause, at least, pay for their indulgence themselves. Collect funds to pay the fines that the club experiences that, ultimately, contribute to the ticket price.

Could you please point to how society has changed in Scotland that would allow us all to move on? Seems to me that Scottish society for minorities the largest of which is catholic Irish diaspora is still a hostile place. Will your town be having a St. Patrick’s Day parade? Let me guess – no. Celtic is a proud Irish and Scottish at the same time institution and a focal point for expressions of difference much like Barca is for Catalans. Of course all are welcome to support the club with an understanding of what the club is and how it came to be culturally the way it is today.

Anyone can support Celtic and be from any background; see Jewish Conservation Lord Livingstone for example.

Celtic is for everyone. Not for everyone with the caveat that they have sympathies for Irish Catholics. (Just to clarify, I am a Catholic of Irish descent myself)

BroxburnBhoy

You misunderstand the point Plum. Celtic have an ethos which was built on helping the 99% Irish diaspora poor in Glasgow. There may well have been other poor people be helped too – great. That said the vast majority were Irish and presume catholic ( like the people who started Celtic ). When sectarianism raised its ugly head, that Irish identity was solidified more in the face of discrimination and bigotry. Its no surprise that the ethos of the club is based on Irish identity Scottish descendants like you and me and celebrates the culture and republican ( since there is an Irish Republic ) sentiments. As you say all are welcome and they will soon learn and adopt the ethos of the club and its cultural identity. is Lordship may profess to be a Celtic supporter and that’s great. That said he did vote to make poor people poorer and that is out of step with our club ethos. That is a matter for him and his conscience I suppose. So there is o arbiter imply a reality and culture that exists that people choose to embrace as part of being a Celtic man or woman. You can be there simply to watch a football match, which you can do anywhere anytime with multiple games or you can be there to support and be part of Celtic. Its a choice. A club like no other has an identity like no other and it is whether like it or not based on the fact theta the majority of our supporters are of Irish origin and share a link to the story of that Island and ts history. Just like Barcs for Catalans. A lot of non Catalans support Barca and yet the nature of the club the ethos is Catalan. you see my point?

I will have an argument with anyone about why supporting the IRA is wrong on many levels and not something that a rational person should do and why it has less than nothing to do with Celtic, but what I won’t do is try to criminalise free speech. You want to voice your mistaken opinion, go for it, fuck police Scotland, fuck the SNP and fuck the UK government for trying to silence the people and police our thoughts.

As the misogynistic anti-semite Mel Gibson once said, “freedom!”

I love the songs of independence and freedom, have no issues with historical songs even those remembering atrocities. If I am honest though I am not a fan of songs glorifying deeds of what is seen by many as a terrorist organization. Perception is truth I am afraid. Although ASDA do send coupons….

I go back a bit further Ewanbhoy to a time when we sang Faith of Our Fathers and Hail Glorious Saint Patrick in support of the team. Every player had their name sung during a game but some of the best atmospheres I remember were in The Tommy Burns Managerial era where The Three Amigos had brilliant songs chanted for them really imaginative and funny songs that the Huns could not compete with. They were still stuck in 1690 .We are in danger of being caught in a similar time warp around 1960’s to 1980’s hanging on to an era that is sad and shameful to remember considering the people who died needlessly in my opinion.
Look at Dortmund last week when an 80 year old fan had a heart attack and died in the ground . Apparently and I have not seen it myself yet ,the whole ground fell into silence then in the second half they burst into YNWA in respect. That is how we
as Celtic Supporters should be supporting the Team instead of the insidious chanting . ☘☘☘

This may be a P.C. world but you will never stop people singing there own songs and quite rightly so,our parents and grandparents made tremendous sacrifices to preserve our freedoms so my answer would be keep on keeping on.

I am a Bob Marley loving Northern Irish citizen living in Barcelona who happens to love the tic, think there are loads of republcan and unionist tossers in the world who are basically have the same anger but on different colours. AM I entitled to be a celtic fan?
On a football note which is rare these days on the site, do you think Callum mcGregor in his current form has made the difference in the results of late?

Rebus67

Brian,

Firstly, congratulations on living in Barca. I love that city.
On Mcgregor, that thought had crossed my mind. I remember the late John White of Spurs and Scotland fame. His nickname was the ghost. You hardly saw him in games but he was the glue that held it all together……he was the link. He was only noticed when he was not playing!. Mcgregor is in and out of a game, but he has certainly made a positive impact playing more in the middle. I thought his last goal was just one goal on the road to two or three more, but it turned out to be the winner.

I hope he gets his personal life in order,

I’m saying that anger is anger no matter what way you colour it, what is there to glorify in war, are there decent rangers supporters – of course my father was a n,Irish catholic whose best friend was a hun, they went to celtic park one week and ibrox the next together, he was in the rangers end when celtic won 7-1 in 1957 and told me about the bottles been thrown and abuse in that game but did it narrow his mind? No!
He was always proud of his irish roots and always reminded me of brother Walfrid and the true meaning of celtic su.pport – charity

Monti you are a geek, I agree totally with u Brian. There is an element of the support that sing and let off flares, theyRw basically numbskulls that do not understand the Irish issues.
They are the opposite of the mindless morons that attend Ibrokes, that hate everything Irish and Papish.
Years agoUn the jungle the fans sang songs regaling the Free Irish issues, at least they understood.
We live in a small bigoted backwater and we should be bigger and greater than the dross that surrounds us.

Ok different coins, yours is a harp and theirs is a queen. I was in Enniskillen the morning the bomb went off, I was in bed with a bit of a hangover. I identified with Gordon Wilson when he said I forgive my daughters killers, I was proud of him. Of course there were times when we need to get up/stand up like Derry like with the Black in Tans (who my grandfather fought against for the original IRA) would he sing songs about his victory? Would he fuck. It was a case of we have to stop this injustice and injustice has been on both sides wether you admit it or not. So excuse me while I light my spliff.

Truth and reconciliation is a wonderful thing. South Africa is a good example. Apologies for atrocities and reconciliation no matter how grudgingly is all good. The historical roots of why it all happened was colonialism and occupation of other people’s countries. People who were colonized have a perfect right to be angry about it, particularly when the colonizer favors one group over another and supports systematic discrimination. Those who colonized have less of a right to be angry when the local inhabitants fight back. So my thoughts are if you colonize a country and glory in your imperial power and prestige and subject the locals to discrimination it is likely to invoke anger resulting in an organized attempt to push the colonists out by whatever means necessary. So trying to have equivalencies is in my view misplaced. It is too easy to say both sides are as bad as each other.

FFS some don’t understand the Irish issues…I know I don’t. I understand some Scottish issues though. Malware is a catch all term for software/websites that contain viruses, adware, fishing tackle etc. If you’re on windows then your anti-virus and windows defender(if enabled) will either block and quarantine the offending routines, or if it is present on a website, it will warn you of the possibility that the nasty wee bugger is there.

It will then give you the option of continuing or navigating away.

On windows 10 all anti-virus/spyware is incorporated within Windows Defender as part of the operating system.

If you are on 7, 8, 8.1 or vista you will either have standalone protection like Norton, Kaspersky or Macafee, or possibly a combination of Windows essentials and Defender.

Just make sure you have automatic updates set.

There are also apps for phones and tablets which are readily available from playstore etc.

Hope that helps.

No I wasn’t having a go and feel the same way as you about the club but they really should be out of site and have been mismanaged imo for probably the last ten years and certainly the last five.
