Celtic Diary Thursday February 25: It’s All Getting Very Messi

I think I’m on the point of spotting why Celtic need a PR man.

Or at the very least an accomplished speechwriter.

“James can still be a fantastic footballer. Everybody sees what he has but he has to do it more often in games.

“There has to be more intensity in everything he does. When he carries the ball he is like Messi. You just feel it is so easy.

“Everything is good but it has to be more effective and it has to be more intense defensively and offensively. Then he will reach his full potential.

“Now he is in a very good place but he hasn’t played so much because of the competition. He has to use his minutes.

“Now that he is going he wants to play every match and train every day. It is a big step for him. If he stays then he will be even better because James has something special.”

Ronny Deila comparing James Forrest to Lionel Messi, and giving him a big public hug. and assuring him that the fact the deal was for four years meant something.

Is the four-year offer a statement? Of course it is.

“But I never get surprised any more. We have these interesting situations all the time.

“There are a lot of things the player has to talk about.

“They have agents and there are other opportunities. It is a tough thing. But we have given him a good offer and we have to go on now that he has said no.

“He’s here and he’s a good footballer so I will continue picking the team that I think is the best. We will see what happens with James between now and Christmas.”

Supporters might feel a little bamboozled at this latest twist in the story concerning the recent “rejection” of a new four year deal by the winger, after the club adopted a David Cameron style of PR, which is largely just saying whatever you think people want to hear, regardless of whatever else you’ve said, or indeed what the facts are, on any given topic.

So, of course, Honduran left back Emilio Izaguirre should also be feeling wanted as well, after fearing that he might be surplus to requirements.

“Of course he has, we can’t have one full-back. Yes, he has a future and he’s a great player.

“It’s tough competition on that side. Everyone can see what KT has done but everyone also respects what Emilio has done for this club. We know we have two very good full-backs. He’s a player we want to keep.

“I talk with Emilio lots of times. He comes into my office and we talk. Of course he wants to play more, that’s for sure. Everybody in that squad wants to play.

“But it’s a competition and you never know in football. Something could happen with KT and also he can show in training that he is better. I can’t make my decision on what a national team coach is having an opinion

I’d be happy if he’d start by making decisions based on his own opinion, and told everyone else he was the manager, and he’ll make the decisions that affect the team.

And he alone.

These days, football managers are not allowed to have the open chequebook and brown envelopes that served them so well in the past, for obvious reasons.

Men such as Harry Redknapp, Dick Advocaat and recently Brendan Rodgers, have been a little over enthusiastic with their clubs money, and it had to stop sooner or later.

Paying over inflated wages and fees will ultimately lead to more than one club taking the Rangers route to oblivion, and its no surprise that very few now have complete control.

Deila, though, doesn’t seem to have any. He’s trying to make the players feel wanted, but it appears to be out of his hands.

Yesterday, the club tweeted Deila claiming..

I haven’t talked straight with Jamesy about these things. Been a part of our squad for many years, and we wanted to keep him.”

Thats hard to believe.

Why would a manager not talk to one of his players, especially one he wants to keep ?

So, lets assume he has.

The club also tweeted;

“An issue between the club and the player. We got a no from an offer which we felt was really good and we have to keep going.” (MH)

So its not between the manager and the player ?

Okay, who then ?

The players agent, surely ?

And the man who offers the contracts ?

Okay, lets make something up, lets imagine we overheard a conversation between the two.

Maybe , for instance, the man offering the contract asked for an answer, you know, to tidy things up and move things along.

Maybe the agent said the player would like a bit of time to talk it over with his family.

Maybe not, maybe the agent just rang the club and asked for ridiculous money and a guaranteed first team spot.

Unlikely. no agent, knowing how the club works would act so rashly. you’d assume, anyway.

So, the players wants time to think it over-he’s got until December, there’s no rush, at least in his eyes.

But the contract manager isn’t getting an answer when he wants it, and he is a man used to getting what he wants.

What if he threw a wobbly, and said the deal was off ? And said he knew it was a mistake offering it in the first place ?

Then, the club announces the player has rejected the deal ?

The trouble is, conjecture like this will always surround this kind of situation, and even though the club has said the player has rejected the deal, it does seem rather a lot of hullaballoo for the traditional turning down of the first offer, which is the point that both sides actually start to go to work on the deal.

And , as the club have a history of fudging the issue, have deigned to employ certain types of character on the board not entirely unaccustomed to telling lies, then I’ll stick with my made up version of events.

And when that gets boring, I’ll make something else up.

You see, the problem now is getting out of hand, and won’t help the player , the coach, or the CEO to say or do anything any of us believe, and the press are beginning to sniff blood, which means  they can do their usual anti-Celtic stuff and do their best best to upset the players and even spread a little bit of panic amongst them.

I mean, look at this….

Hibernian 0 Morton 3:

Ton run riot at Easter Road as Hibees’ title hopes take a

huge dent

With Celtic set to face the Greenock side in the cup quarter finals, this ridiculous attempt to unsettle the players by making up a scoreline is beyond the pale.

( Ralph, you’re fired -Ed )

Oh. turns out thats true, but then again, if it’s nearly Easter, it must be time for the annual hibernian Festival which involves everything you’ve done for twelve months falling into pieces for no real reason other than thats what happens at this time of year.

So I wouldn’t worry about Morton causing us any problems in the cup, as it’s been a couple of years since they last knocked us out of a competition, and with the game being at noon next sunday, no-one from Greenock will be up for it, as the police sirens and gunfire would have kept them awake the previous night.

And anyway, we might just have a surprise for them…

Another attempt to make a first division club and its manager relevant.

And another reason why we should have a strong PR department, or a speechwriter.

I’ll give it a go..

“Ronny , what do you think about Mark Warburtons views on articifial pitches. 2

My solution, after much deliberation , would be for Ronny to say.

“I don’t give a flying fuck what he thinks, or anyone else from that lice infested shit pit. ”

The papers, of course, like to kick up a little controversy, as they did when Gary Harkins of Dundee commented that Rangers were a new club.

He’s been vilified on social media by the supporters of that club who have opposable thumbs, which is still a sizeable percentage, and we hear that the papers have lined up another “unbeliever ” for the hordes to feast upon.

Celtic face Hamilton tomorrow. I’ll ring Peter in the morning and let you know what the team is…..

Caption competition today is in full colour, and its quite a , er, striking image.

Though it appears the ultimate caption competition winner of all time has been announced…

Finally, one person has already been chopped for his comments.

Keep it rational, respectful and reasonably thought provoking.

Why is it ” guff “?

It’s guff because James Forrest is’nt that good a footballer and too much has been made of the fact that he’s turned down a contract / hasn’t been offered a contract / someones not telling the truth about his contract, the same guff that we’re reading every other day.

It’s not guff at all, the fans have a right to know what is going on at their club, surely?

Reply to  Monti

Monti, you asked me this question yesterday as well and we do know what’s going on; he has been offered a contract, but until such time as he signs it, or signs with another team, then nothing is actually happening. James can take his time, weigh up any other options he has, and when he makes his decision then the fans can be told again that something real has happened.
I don’t think the protracted negotiations between agent and club shuld be disclosed to fans, once James signs let me know who it’s with and I’ll get ready to support him or say goodbye to him depending on his decision.

At the end of last year RD put out a request through the SMSM for Jamesy’s agent to pick up the phone, as he was refusing to take any calls from CFC, if the decision was then as now, he would have been sold in January. Now as it stands he can get more ‘wonga’, as being he can sign a pre-contract agreement in August, meaning more cash for James and a higher percentage for the ‘agent’. His agent has played a blinder here and there is nothing no one can do about it. including the whispering of soft tones from the manager into his ear. Only my opinion. HH

I suggest your being slightly harsh on a fellow celtic man in Brendan Rodgers as he admitted it was a Signing Committee at Liverpool who were presenting him with personnel ie “here is a forward like you said you needed” and unveiling Balotelli etc.
As Rodgers said, when you have no options, you take what youre given.

I concede the Committee at Pool may have arisen after his spending spree after coming from Swansea and saying Joe Allen was worth mega millions!

That’s a picture taken prior to the Madrid game in 1980.
In Season 80-81 Celtic played with 2 up and in the Celtic Way.
The team had players including :
Bonner Latchford
McGrain Aitken McAdam Burns McStay McLeod Provan Doyle
McGarvey and McCluskey.
The Manager was and still is the magnificent Billy McNeill.
The Average Attendance at Parkheid (not Celtic Park for most of us back then)in a Stadium capable of holding 67,000
22,836 Average over the 18 Home Games.
Recap that’s the above lineup (which would smash the current squad)playing 2 up and the Celtic Way.

Caption: (between blows) we. Are. The. Same. Club.

I wrote a wee piece a while ago wondering if Ronnie was our manager, ie had final day on comings and goings or was our coach, told to look after the players in his squad and keep our off the rest. Think it’s becoming clearer with these mixed messages that he’s now (if wasn’t always) very much excluded from contacts, buying and selling etc. Which is either a really good thing or a very bad thing given how our signings for the past few seasons have been working out.

Just a personal observation too… Didn’t get to the diary until late last night, thought it was, as usual a great read. Having tried to write a few things now I know it isn’t easy, and it’s certainly not well paid. But Ralph does it day in day out as he loves Celtic and loves debate. By the time I got there there were in the region of 200 comments. And virtually none of them made any reference to the piece, just a platform for grown men, supposedly with the same goal, to abuse, belittle and insult one another. Pathetic really. Time for James to go.

He never hit the heights which was expected of him, for one reason or another injury.

On his day he is brilliant to watch but those days are few and far between. I personally think he expects to be a top earner, probably not helped by Deila saying he’s one of the best players at the club. But does anyone here think he is worth £30K a week? I’m not saying that’s what he wants but if the top players are in that ball park then Jamesy and is agent wants it too.

Not enough game time, not enough shown to warrant a contract up their with the highest earners. Sell him and “Bo Richter” and it halves the medical bills.

I like Forrest but he’s just not good enough on a consistent basis, sadly.

andybhoy
Reply to  HoudiniBhoy

Why did you quote the ridiculous figure of £30k a week?
Why do you say selling him and the lost cause Boerrigter to half the medical bills when Forrest has been more or less injury free for well over a year. All our players currently at Celtic Park will not ‘hit the heights’playing under this current coaching staff.
PS, you wouldn’t get a bag of joob joobs and a blow on a ragmans trumpet for Boerrigter.

HoudiniBhoy
Reply to  andybhoy

I think I specifically said that I wasn’t saying he wanted that. But IF it he and/or his agent think he is one of the top players, is he worth that? Should Forrest be in the same bracket wage wise as Commons or Brown? That was the question! Let’s not kid ourselves Forrest will get that, and more, playing for a top Championship side let alone a mid-table obscurity Premiership side in England

The medical bills comment was somewhat glib although I was talking over the many years where he has had problems. Forrest is a class player on his day, again those days are too few and far between and not worth the money the top players are on.

Sell, get rid of Boerrigter, it matters not… the joob joobs would be preferable all the same.

Stevie

I don’t think the issue is whether or not James has accepted /rejected the offer. It’s the way it’s been handled that’s the real issue. The pr at Celtic has been awful for as long as I remember and I see no sign of it changing soon.
A wee story, I used to work in retail and we had a section devoted to Celtic & rangers (il), the Celtic guy was an absolute arse and proudly told me that “the mugs would buy anything”. I then told him I was one those mugs and that he could get the out the shop before I threw him out. I phoned the club to enquire if this was the kind of people they wanted to promote the club to be told someone would get back to me soon as. Still waiting for that call.
Pretty boring story I know but the point is, if you don’t have people within who love the club like the fans do, they’ll never do what’s best.

I’ve always liked Forrest yet have been waiting for him to reach his peak. Now we have Mackay-Steven, Roberts and Armstrong and maybe Christie and Allan to play that role. James should go where his future lies. I fear he will vanish like some of our other gifted players/wingers like Brian McLaughlin, McGeady, Burchill and McCourt. I would like him to stay but not at all odds, nor is he worth anything like 30k a week! Jamesie can’t be a work-in-progress all of his career. Maybe at age 18 but not aged 25! I still like the bhoy and enjoy watching him play when he is at his best.

Reply to  Bgbhoy

Surely there is not much difference between a rejection and the deal being removed by higher powers – are we expecting the board to leave a contract offer on the table indefinitely. In order to move negotiations on, all offers will have a timescale attached – if an agent doesnt respond within that timescale that will be viewed as a rejection. Unless you are telling us that the club pulled the offer before the original time limit was up?

I’m not defending the board here – I’m not happy with the decision to move on Hooper and Ledley without adequate replacements and the way it was presented to the fans through the media.

In my opinion, James Forrest relies heavily on his pace and a four year deal is a risk – an injury could limit his ability significantly – far more than anyone else we have on the books (other than maybe Johansons ability to run around like a headless chicken), therefore at this point I dont feel he should be taking the step up to be one of our highest earners. An incentive based contract (good basic wage with large bonuses for game time / assists etc) would protect both parties – do we have any detail on whether James Forrest believes himself to be deserving of a big salary bump?

Bgbhoy
Reply to  Marty

I imagine that when agreeing a new deal is not a case of here’s what we are offering and then it’s signed. There was categorically no time limit imposed. As far as I know James hadn’t given much of a thought and then it was off the table.

The question I would be asking if I didn’t know what was going on is why the manager has made a massive u turn regarding the type of player and importance to the squad from Monday’s original statement.

The way Deila sets his team up does not allow for the wide midfielder to hit the by line as often as we’d like and many times it’s down to the full back to get into that all important area.If you watch how teams set up when Forrest gets the opportunity to play, they double up on him, as do the European teams we play, simply because they know the danger he poses and on many occasions he has to cut infield. If you watch him, the amount of selfless running he does to create space for other players goes right over the top of many who know fuck all about the game and to read some of the comments made about some of the players leave me at a loss. But I suppose we’ve seen it in the past, I remember when Tommy Callaghan used to get it big time, Peter the pointer, fuck me and I wasn’t his biggest fan, but I remember Lennon getting the treatment as well.
I don’t rate the manager and I don’t think I ever will, simply because he will never have the ability to get the best out of any Celtic team.

Monti all supporters have a different opinions on
all Celtic players. That is life we may not agree but as long as the tic.win then so be it.
I personally see Efe as a defensive mid, same as charlies angel and John Young, big strong athletic with pace,he is never in one million miles a centre back, where he just makes the wrong choices.Having said that at def. mid. you need to be able to read the game and i am not certain he can.Hope you forgive me but thats how i see it.H.H.

Andy, thanks for the reply, like you i have never booed a Celtic player or sub.why would you it only destroyes confidence. It was a metaphoric/motovational kick that i was referring to.
James is a great player with a wonderfull talent, good players are targeted(jersey pulling/doubling up always part of the game, especially here with not much referee support)He has played for 1/2 national managers and if he was as bad as some make out wouldnt be selected.
I have read your posts re. the current Management team and share your opinion of them,i just hope they are gone by the end of this season.

Just to change the topic completely … don´t know if its made the news over there .. its in all the papers here today.
The International board are discussing whether or not to finally implement the video replay facility in football … the vote is early march (4th) and they have chosen the following countries to act as guinea pigs … Ingerland .. Brasil .. France .. Germany .. Australia .. Holland .. Australia and … oh yeah Scotland !!! No more Dougie Dougie .. no more Meekings handballing .. well obviously that will still go on .. but no more “Honest Mistakes” … ???

Doc

Don’t see why it would be implemented as it has been voted against, unanimously, at least twice and I don’t know why the same folk at the SFA/FA/IFA/FAW would reverse themselves. Hope more nonsense like sinbin, 4th sub, etc. doesn’t get voted in.

Won’t be happy (even less than now) if we lose Forrest and the others who’ve been mentioned in a season end exodus. It would leave us with only five CL experienced players; Brown, Lustig, Cole, Boerrigter and Kazim-Richards, three of whom are unlikely to start.

I would find it extremely difficult to see the club not qualify for the Champions league group stages again next season.
I think this scenario would signal the end of a number of people at Parkhead.
At this moment in time, I would be surprised to find ANY Celtic fan, who thinks we can make it with the current policies and management team.

Couple of points:

1. For a player plagued by injury, he had been injury free for about a year now.
2. He has issues with his running technique forget about the rest of his game.
3. Due to not working hard enough off of the field early in his career (especially to balance his body and increase his natural fitness and Strength) it is likely be will have a shorter career than average.
Now if it is true he is not rated then there is no way he should sign such a long contract. If he has the chance to earn big money for 3 seasons then he quite honestly should do it, if he is lucky he will get another 3 year contract earning twice what we are offering. Every time he steps on the field of he is risking running his chances of making big bucks down South.
I know that this is not what many of you want to read, but it’s probably what is best for James. BG if you do talk to him tell this from me! Thanks for the counter attacking goals in Europe, you will do very well at bottom half clubs down South who like to counter. Keep working hard in the gym and you should stay injury free! Do what’s right for yourself. You’re always going to be a Celt in your heart! Hail, Hail.

Qualification for the C.L. depending on some better quality replacements is just a possibility (Charlie Saiz…we rarely replace leavers with equal or better, that is why we are where we are) but then what ? Getting gubbed home and away ? I know some things can change between now and July but I cannot see it and believe the Board do’t care that much one way or the other.
Re the Madrid game, was at training (amateurs)the night before and took a sore one going down heavily No sleep as my wrist was louping. Went into work the next morning (Glasgow Royal Infirmary )and my boss sent me to get it x-rayed.

I agree with a few on here I’m actually just fed up hearing Ronny talk. Its all he seems to do , I have a manager at work who likes the sound of his own voice and never actually does anything productive, bit like Ronny , everything’s bout how he has his finger on the pulse and is going to revolutionise football. Problem is you cant organise a side to beat a hyped up abrdeeen team at pittodrie mate and don’t know your best team in over two years

Off topic a little, as many of you know I wrote a piece not that long ago about the type of training going on at Celtic and I also called for more openess on the improvements made.
“I think definitely I have improved defensively since I came here, and tactically. That’s something we do a lot of work on in training. So it’s been beneficial.” Gary Mackay-Steven.
Thank you for your openess GMS (probably just coincidence, but hey you never know).

I never said he was tactically naïve I said he did not have the players to play his tactic and I also said that it was very complicated, with many nuances and the players were spending too much time working on the tactic and not enough time on becoming two-footed and all round technical footballers.
