Celtic Diary Tuesday February 16: Dons Fall Apart Again

Fears of a serious challenge from Aberdeen vanished in a fit of giggles last night when Inverness came from behind to win 3-1 in the Highland capital. The dons also got a taste of what its like to face twelve men as Willie Collum, Scotland’s top referee, turned in a trademark performance of such ineptitude that he must surely now be favourite to take up the Presidency of the SFA.

However, should the northern lights be turned back on when they face Partick, a mere 30-0 win would see Derek McInnes’s side take over at the top on goal difference, though Celtic would have two games in hand.

They’re not, are they ?

McInnes diplomatically avoided calling Collum out, but made it clear who he blamed;

“We got off to a brilliant start and then make a poor decision and let Inverness back into it, At 1-1, it is finely poised and there to be won, but there were some key decisions in both boxes that went against us. That’s been quite pivotal in the outcome. For their penalty award, at the time, I didn’t think there was anything in it. Having seen it, there’s no contact. I think the player has bought a penalty there, to be honest. He’s gone down under no contact and the referee has assumed there has been contact. We’re disappointed.

“Back in December, I thought their same player has bought a penalty, gone down a bit easy. It was the same tonight. You’re hoping the referee sees it. If he sees it again, I think he’d make a different decision.

“He’s gone down under no contact and tried to make out there was. It is clearly not a penalty, but I need to say Inverness played well. It’s not just about decisions, but when the game is finely-poised and there to be won then that decision has been quite pivotal.

And if that doesn’t make you smile, there’s more….

Norwegian wonderkid/prospect/next big thing Kristoffer Ajer flies in to Glasgow today-he doesn’t even need a plane-to undego a medical ahead of his move to celtic in the summer.

Here he is practising lifting his leg up, and its much higher than anyone else we have on the books can do.

The 17-year-old is set to complete at deal to the Parkhead club for £500,000 from Start in the summer

‘I travel tomorrow and the clubs have agreed everything,’ said Ajer. ‘So we will look at signing a deal and a medical examination.

‘It is huge for me. It’s a big dream I’ve worked for all my life and now it has come true,’ Ajer told Norwegian media.

Ajer is expected to complete his medical by Wednesday and, if all goes to plan, will be confirmed as a Celtic player before Saturday’s home clash with Inverness.

Thats from the Daily Mail, who can always be counted on to give good publicity to white, blond , northern Europeans coming into the country.

As long as its not on a boat.

Our development side should play the european qualifiers, especially if Deila continues to maintain that Patrick Roberts isn’t ready  for the first team yet. The Manchester city loannee keeps scoring and creating goals, and until that trait has been beaten out of him, he won’t feature in the first team.

CELTIC…4
(Roberts 12, 34, McMullan 14, Christie 31)

DUNFERMLINE…1
(Crossan 54)

PATRICK Roberts bagged a brilliant brace as Celtic’s Development Side turned on the style to defeat Dunfermline 4-1 at Lennoxtown and stretch their lead at the top of the table to six points.

The on-loan Manchester City player, who had scored and impressed on his debut for the second-string 10 days ago against Motherwell, tormented the Pars for the 75 minutes he was on the pitch.

It only took him 12 minutes to open the scoring with an exquisite finish after he had been supplied by Scott Allan.

He then setup Paul McMullan for number two moments later after some trickery on the byline, before Ryan Christie got in the act with a clinical effort into the corner.

With 11 minutes still to play in the first half, Roberts got his second of the match with another fantastic finish. Collecting a pass and bursting into the box, he casually scooped the ball over goalkeeper Cammy Gill.

Allan, Christie, Roberts. In front of Brown and Armstrong. Or Armstrong and Johansen.

If thats not the midfield five on Saturday, I’m going to stage a mass walkout by myself.

We might not have to worry about qualifying for the champions League soon anyway, with the plans to make it more of an exclusive old pals club on the table.

Of course, that won’t happen, and Scott Brown told us why.

It just sounds like someone’s had a great idea and it’s gone pear-shaped.

“It’s easy for the clubs who are
automatically in the tournament year after year to decide that they’re the only ones who should be in it but that’s not right.

“This isn’t just about Celtic – there are other big clubs like Ajax and Benfica and Porto, who have also been European champions.

“If it were to happen, it would be terrible, I’d be devastated. We haven’t made it for the last two years but not to have it ever again would be gutting for everyone.

“Messi said playing at Parkhead was one of the highlights of his career – but that was just because he was playing against me.

But it just shows how different grounds and different clubs make the tournament. We should at least have the opportunity to play in the Champions League.

“The size of our support makes us one of the biggest clubs in Europe and they follow us
wherever we go. The fans at Celtic Park are incredible on Champions League nights.

“If you ask opposition players, they struggle with it. The fans sing their hearts out for 90 minutes and get right behind us.”

“It suits them, eh? Maybe we should make a plan as well. It’s not the Champions League anymore if they do that. The champions of every country should be in it. It’s hard already because England, Spain, Germany and Italy have four teams. We have to get through three qualifiers.

“Back in the good old days, champions went straight into the tournament. It’s a hard one
to hear about this new plan, hopefully UEFA don’t go with it.”

Brown has experience of the champions League, and is certainly someone who would have thoughts on the matter that should be listened to.

But, er, Mark Warburton, who has yet to manager at the top level even in Scotland, why was he asked about something he knows nothing about ?

“Gordon Strachan knows the importance of having players with Champions League experience It’s the only way to help their development at the top level.

“You talk about the young players here. Are they behind Celtic? Yes, because Chris McCart and the boys at Celtic have been playing in the Next Gen and the UEFA Youth League. Our aim is to get the boys here in that.

“Best against best is the only way you prepare, you have to make sure you’re challenged. You take that away from the national team and it will have a massive negative impact on Gordon.”

Warburton harbours hopes of managing the Ibrox men in the Champions League but said: “It’s not just about Rangers, it’s the whole ethos, the whole idea.

“Some massive Premier League clubs don’t qualify. This year it could be Manchester United and Chelsea. If you take that away, if you focus purely on top clubs, it’ll be like a league without promotion or relegation.

“You devalue the competition and that would be a great shame.”

You only devalue European competitions when you let cheats participate….

The whole issue of big clubs breaking away surfaces every so often, and it usually means they just want a bigger share of the pot, or guaranteed qualification for the “big clubs ” who don’t make it.

It won’t be exclusively invitation only, but there may be a rule which means previous European champions get automatic entry, or clubs with big grounds get in. It’ll just mean more qualifiers for the others.

Personally, I’d make the qualifiers into a group format, thus spreading the money around a bit more, and removing the “off night ” fear that can cost clubs dearly.

But include everyone, exceptt maybe the current holders.

Peter Lawwell has been away trying to garner support for resistance to the idea. He has made contact with Ajax and a number of other similar clubs from Europes smaller countries and talks will take place soon.

They are , however, probably doomed to failure because Neil Doncaster has thrown his weight behind the idea, and has also gone off to talk to people trying to muster support.

Lets hope they tell him they’re not home, because he will no doubt want a certain new club involved in any solution, which of course, due to their creative accounting and financial history, mean that other nations might not be so keen.

The talk is centred around the re-introduction of the old Atlantic League idea, involving teams such as Celtic, Porto,Ajax, Benfica etc, but isn’t that doing, albeit on a smaller scale, exactly what we are criticising UEFA for with the champions League ?

The idea would see a diminshed presence in the clubs domestic leagues, which in turn would rob snmaller clubs of finance.

Just the tiniest hint of hypocrisy there, then.

Time for a caption competition, and what could all the fuss be about here ?

Still people bleating on about deila winning the double leagues…. Like this comes as some sort of surprise!! The majority of Celtic supporters who PAY money to watch Celtic have had enough. There was less than 25k at the game on Saturday. A 3pm kick off btw. That is nothing short of shambolic. That is why the board have acted for the new season. When 10k of your season ticket holders do not turn up for already bought games then you know something is wrong. It’s clear despite more talk that he will be removed today that it’s not going to happen until the summer. The team have my full support until the end of the season. If for some reason he is still in charge by then I have decided I will not be spending any more money on Celtic. This would not be a vendetta against the manager but a self imposed protest at the clubs lack o direction. And don’t get me started on title stripping. If we do not act on that if and when the time comes then and only then would I stop supporting the club. I would urge all my fellow fans to be thinking along those lines if we don’t force through these titles to be stripped

Have too say I agree on the hypocrisy levels of those Clubs (including Celtic)who may be looking at the idea of a Splinter League.
If UEFA go for this I think a great many will simply turn off or turn over the channels.
I personally would rather watch a Sunday League game up the Park than put a single penny into anything like they are suggesting.
Where will it end?
A stadium with about 15,000 privileged seats round it like Wimbledon the rest watch via pay per view etc totally priced out of attending?
You might think that fanciful but year on year more fans are being priced out of the game.
There is only so much coin you can squeeze out of a consumer especially when the bulk of those consumers your product is aimed at is on relatively poor income when stacked up against attending the top flight teams.
The TV Companies,Plantini and all the Corporate leeches will suck Football dry then simply drop off bulging then move on to the next victim.
They don’t give a fuck about Scotland,Holland ,Portugal etc.
That’s not where the big profit margins lay.
If the English FA back this then I would suggest the rest of us walk away from their product too.
That bubble will bust one day.
I will be lucky enough to have a front row seat when it does.
Deck chair out safety glasses on popcorn in hand bring it on.

Jim,

To some degree I can see your point. Suport your team through good and bad times. However, sometimes the club needs a wee dunt into the correct direction. Financing wrong decisions will not solve the problem.

Suppose bought a product, say beer, and after drinking a few you decided it was rotten….not just one bottle but the whole pack, would you go back and buy some more? I do not think you would….you’d either tell the manufacturer that their beer is crap and, until it improves, you are out of it; or you would simply walk away from it. Celtic isn’t like castor oil….tastes aweful but it does you good!

I admire your loyalty, tho, even if it is misguided.

That’s because 42,500 have paid to get in bud not necessarily tuned up to watch.

jrw

Reply to  Charlie Saiz

If that were true then we would presumably just see the exact same figure of season books holders plus a handful of away fans added in (Aberdeen and Hearts excepted) quoted for every home match. The attendances this season have ranged from 42,000 up to 48,700. We might rightly condemn the club for a range of things (over priced pies for instance), but systematic lying about attendances isn’t one of them. And on the subject of attendances, we shouldn’t forget the impact of austerity since 2008; many folk have had to cut down and discretionary spending such as attending football suffers. Poor quality football is no doubt a contributory factor too judging by comments posted on this site.

Charlie Saiz

I agree with most of that bud but they do give out the paying attendance rather than the actual physical attendance at games as it makes no difference to the Tax Man if you are sat at your seat or not.

with tory board members voting to starve children and our club not yet doing anything about cheating by other clubs fans are becomign detached from the club and the poor product on the park does not help

fans are smarter than they where 40 years ago, and are far more politically aware…a ll of this added together does not read good for the club moving forward

They are staying away because they miss ‘them’. That is the sad truth. Attendances have been down for years. In Lennon’s last year they were down and it is because many of Celtic’s ‘supporters’ are only interested in playing them. we have a competition this season yet they can’t be bothered to show up and support the team. I thought it was win, lose or draw. Obviously not. So playing badly means they don’t show up. The season books will be snapped up when they are back. Celtic seem to be like a battered wife, can’t live with the man but keep letting him back in. As for title stripping. No chance. The board are delighted that they are back and will support the same club myth all the way. Maybe we really are two cheeks of the same arse. A bit sad and pathetic really.

I stay away because there is literally no value for money in Scottish football.

Transport links/parking availability is prehistoric, match-day experience a half-arsed joke, prices are astronomical and the quality of the product on display is sub-standard.

Then Celtic have the temerity to charge the best part of £400 for the “privilege” of having a season ticket…then charge you a whack extra for any European games.

Basically what I’m saying is due to the fact that I don’t have any buttons up the back of my head and as such wouldn’t give a penny to the dying tragicomedy that is Scottish fitba.

I’ve been to both Dortmund and Mainz for league games in the last 18 months.

It’s actually embarrassing how bad a product we offer here in Scotland and expect fans to pay extortionate prices for tickets, food/drink and transport.

Christ, over there travel to the games via public transport is included in your season ticket and they have a top-up card which can be used to buy food/drink at all Bundesliga stadia.

I watch the Bundesliga matches quite often on BT bud and even the lesser sides the technical ability is miles ahead of Scotland.
Their general play is tidier less scrappy and a moe polished final product I think.
We should be scouting these players I think.
Take Fabian Johnson he was signed on a free by Munchen from Hoffenheim?
We could have signed him for under £3m 3 year ago a quality player who can play 3/4 positions on the Park.

If Ronnie doesn’t give Roberts some game time this week , after two great performances with development squad, then he really has no clue (I know many think that already).

Crowds may be staying a way for a multitude of reasons, but the thing that will push me away is if the SFA and Doncaster remain in power. They have done nothing for the Scottish game, no promotion, no driving it forward, and everyone knows they are corrupt. f nothing changes you have to assume Celtic and other clubs are complicit and that for me would be reason enough to chuck it.

I would ask all reading this if I was to set up a page/blog/site dedicated to the possibility of implementing fan ownership outright and taking Celtic back to an ethical setup rather than a Corporate plaything designed to fill a few lucky rich mens wallets would you be interested?
That goes out to all Tims,Supporters,Ex Pats and wider fan base alike?
I believe as you are probably aware it’s just a matter of numbers.
The reason I ask this is as every Season passes now the Board and the Fans seem to be haeding in the opposite direction as to what they both think Celtic is and should deliver.
I believe if the many, many thousands, million (whatever the actual figure is) were to acquire enough share to take control then we could have a side on the Park worth getting excited about and more importantly at a reasonable price as well as a Club focussing on Charity and the general happiness and well being of those who Support it?
Please let me know I will put the time and effort into doing it if there is a call for it?
Please keep it sensible folks if there is.

I’ve said before, CS, I know a lot about fan ownership and I am very close to people who’ve actually already done it (& not in a Mickey Mouse way). I’m happy to put you in touch with these folks but it simply will not work for Celtic.

There’s no appetite amongst the punters, shareholders or the board. The latter is most telling because, if they don’t want to consider it, it cannot ever happy, except following something like a financial calamity – and we’re far removed from that.

Just to buy out the ordinary shares, at today’s prices – not at the necessary premium – 70,000 people would need to put in £1000 each. There’s another 17,000,000 preference shares of 100p each to be acquired.

The major shareholders don’t want to sell unless there’s a ridiculous premium. It’s just not a practical proposition.

Granted, there might be many who’d come up with more than £1000 but there’s a load more who couldn’t find the basic amount.

The numbers can’t stack up.

Seem to have missed yesterday’s diary so this may have been done but all nonsense about Johanson was a bit silly. He was played in the forward role he did so well in last year, set GMS up whether Fox saved or GMS missed. Similarly he set Griffiths up, he has scored a lot at acute angle but this hit the post, anyway helper the challenge in during KT’s cross for Leigh’s goal. I applauded when he came off because of his performance. Hope he will finish this season better than before Christmas.
I know some don’t like him because of the alleged KT incident but these things happen in football, I repect the pros’ who can put this behind them, KT is one.

Celtic fans can’t agree on here never mind putting them in charge of our club.
Our board under the most financial restraints ever have done a great job in my opinion. Peter is a true Celtic man, and for me is worth every penny of his income from the club. He has the best interests of Celtic at his heart.
Dermot, would not let anything bad happen to our club he would step in if required, that I gave no doubt.
The fans are going against the board the same as they did with Fergus. The SMSM can’t stand Celtic being the most successful club,so they get the fans too turn on one another or the board.
Fergus getting booed on Flag day still riles me to this day,yes the greatest fans in the world booed a league flag flying.
So do what we should do,and that is be supporters, not critics, not managers, not just fans, but actual supporters.
Over and over we will follow you,I never hear it sung now, because the greeting faced bunch of fans have taken over from the supporters.

Just for info, I never read the press and tend to decide based on what I see on the pitch. The board is responsible for Deila and for our ‘strategy’.

If they’re lacking, as the arrogant DD, Bankier and Livingston are, it’s our duty to call that out for the sake of the club.

Legia Warsaw embarrassed us, Maribor got past us, winning at Celtic park, Malmo got by us with relative ease.

Uralius,

I do not think anything will change my mind about RD. He has been in management for some time now but he still cannot read a game. How many games has he managed in Norway and in Scotland and he still makes fundamental errors.

He picks one formation;
His subs are bizarre:
He cannot counteract the strengths of the opposition;
He plays players out of position.

He should have corrected some of these problems by now.

I see us as top of the league despite the manager. Remember the P. Thistle game? That was won by the individual effort of a player, not by RD’s tactics. We have many better players than other SPL teams, a bigger first team pool, eventually that tells over the stretch. However, poor management of the game can be fatal in any INDIVIDUAL game. That is why we exit cups.

Wish it was otherwise, but this is my view,

Rebus

Uralius

Thanks very much for specifics.

He picks one formation:
It is not so much the same formation that bothers me, but the complete lack of variation. There are so many d different ways to play his preferred formation, but it is almost always the same. The only time anything differs slightly is with a change of personnel. If you play a big holding #10 then why play with a target man? If you are going to play Leigh and Tom is not available put someone in the #10 role that can hold up the ball (or dribble into a dead end).

His subs are bizarre:
I do not necessarily find his subs bizarre he picks his team based on player strengths then he merely brings on a substitute who he feels should get better in that role or at a specific thing. Although I would complain that he has only once managed a Man. Utd. Ole Gunnar sub.

He cannot counteract the strengths of the opposition:
I agree with you on this also I get the impression that Celtic just turn up expecting to play their style of Football and it should work. Kind of like Brazil in the last World Cup. However as the standout team in the league many teams modify their tactics just to play Celtic.

He plays players out of position:
Yes and no… He can be seen playing with inverted wingers (wingers who have been selected on the opposite side of their strongest foot) this is so they can cut-in and shoot with their stronger foot. While I understand this tactic I feel it is 1 dimensional and removes much needed width in the counter. Furthermore IF you are going to play with inverted wingers the technical team should be doing everything in their power to help those wide players improve with their weaker foot.

The European performances have been poor under Ronnie.
But this was coming from the humping barca gave us at the end of our last champions league campaign.
Major players have left especially though the spine of the team,
Goalie ,Centre Backs, Centre mid ,Centre Forward.
Again a handball which should have been punished against Malmo would gave swung the tie in our favour.
We could have went through. Hopefully the team will be in better shape and injuries are not as what they have been, especially Lustig Commons Brown.
I believe the players are there, but again we come up against teams well into their season at that stage,it is time to bring summer football to the front of the agenda.

Couldn’t agree more Jimmybee. Too many fans not enough supporters. I have been annoyed by some of the performances and the decisions made this year but the abuse we have given to our own has been a disgrace for nearly two years. Win. lose or draw is what we were supposed to be about. Have we forgotten the 1990s. We are never all going to agree but I am tired sitting at games and listening to ‘supporters’ practically boo the team onto the park. Abusing players and management never makes them perform better. Of course some performances make us all scream but behaving in exactly the way the Record and the rest want us to behave really annoys me. we spend so much time talking about how they hate Celtic and do us down yet we are our own worst enemies. 12-15 games to go and a league and cup to win, time we all pulled together.

Monti

Reply to  BondiBrian

What practical steps am I taking to fix Celtic?
Well let me see now, Hmmmm… OK, as I’m not a director at the club I can’t stop the selling of our best players and replacing them with inferior ones, so that’s out.
As I’m not a coach at the club, I can’t influence training drills in order to get the best out of the players, tactically and motivationally, so that’s out.
As I’m not the manager I can’t pick the team and play a formation that I believe the Celtic fans would rather see, so that’s out.
So that leaves me with two choices, go to all the games, buy overpriced tickets, merchandise and stuff from the food halls, before watching a pretty average team and a half empty stadium.
Or, keep my hard earned in my pocket, do something with my family and return to the football when a number of issues that are making me disillusioned are resolved!

If he wins the league and the cup then he deserves another go at Europe. If not Deila, who? Are we really going to go down the ex-Celt, unemployed manager that supposedly ‘knows all about what the club is about’ nonsense. Davie Moyes! No thanks. Check out his stats as a manager, they are not good. Alan Stubbs, get a grip! Please who else would have a better chance. The usual response to this is any one but does anyone have an actual sensible suggestion. I do agree that Allan, Christie and Roberts should be playing from now until the end of the season to get them ready for the qualifiers.

BGbhoy players who have left us wanted too. They wanted to taste the English premier league and who can blame them.
They came to Celtic to get to the premiership I have no problem with that but it makes our managers job a lot harder.
This isn’t the boards fault, just how it is.
Cheers John I also keep going because my grandson wouldn’t miss it he is 7 and loves it.
The fans are so called politicised now, where if you don’t make their e fit of a Celtic fan should be your on to a hiding.

Jimmybee speaks from the heart and I agree with a lot of what he says. For me, all Ronny needs to do is win the league. The Cup is a bonus. He needs to get some new players playing, to be ready for Europe: Christie, Allan, Roberts and a few others. I am convinced that Ronny will qualify for the CL. One thing more: we were not so far away from doing that this year with an unsettled team. Mainly, we had some bad luck and our defence wasn’t settled. It is getting there, with Simunovic and Sviatchenko. Also, in the Europa League we had two away draws at tough grounds, not something our previous managers could manage to do. Our team is gelling and is not far away from qualifying for the CL. There are one or two who feel the same as I do. This is a reasonable point of view. No hysterics please. But, minimum, of course we must win the league. I think we will by about ten points. We need to win the league as soon as possible in order to get our new players playing as a unit.

From http://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/feb/16/gent-champions-league-miracle-wolfsburg

“The vision is, and was, that we were only going to recruit players with the right attitude and mentality,” De Witte says. “Even if other players were better on the technical side, we didn’t take them. Our plan has been to work on fighting spirit, a little bit more of that than innate talent. We value solidarity above anything and you saw that in the group stage – the players were unbelievable.”

I imagine Gent and Celtic are not too dissimilar in many ways and I presume quite a few of the current Celtic squad wouldn’t get into the current Gent squad.
