Celtic Diary Tuesday January 26: New Venue For Cup Game

Remember the other day when I said that Celtic and East Kilbride could use New Douglas Park in Hamilton for the upcoming cup game, as Hamilton wouldn’t need it that day ?

Oh, how we laughed,

Well, someone might have.

It appears that they will be using it that day, 7 February, and it appears someone forgot to check with Hamilton before telling everyone the game would take place there.

Well done the SFA.

As usual, the SFA have denied all responsibility, claiming it was up to Hamilton and East Kilbride to sort it out, and immediately took all the phones off the hook.

With modern technology available to sort all of this out quickly, the SFA have written a letter to Hamilton demanding clarification, and as soon as someone has to nip out for fags or a pie, they will get it posted.

We need a statement, and one did appear on Hamiltons website;

“It has recently been reported that we will be hosting the William Hill Scottish Cup 5th round fixture between East Kilbride and Celtic on Sunday 7th February.

“We have a full programme of Academy, Youth and Community events already planned for that weekend and have no intention of altering our club programme and as a result will not be in a position to make New Douglas Park available to stage the tie.”

To be fair, its their ground, and although it may appear a little selfish of them to want to use it themselves, it is up to them.

East Kilbride boss Billy Ogilvie has his own thoughts on where it should take place…

I said to the board preferably the game will be on astro. If it’s Airdrie’s ground or Kilmarnock I’m not bothered – but a 4G park would be best for us from a football perspective.

And if Celtic could maybe remove one player every fifteen minutes or so from the field of play, with the goalie going going first, that would help as well, presumably.

However, I know the most important thing for the Board is that the venue is big enough to satisfy demand and that is crucial too because the whole town is now believing in us.

“East Kilbride has a population of 75,000 and there’s a real sense that the town is buying into us, they realise we’re for real now and we don’t want to see people turned away.

Look, let’s be realistic. They’re not all going to go to the game. some of them will be working, and others will find a stream.

“The biggest thing for me was seeing the demand to come to the tie last Wednesday – we could have sold K Park over four times that night. That was my first glimpse of how the town is reacting.

“As soon as we beat Stenhousemuir in the previous round was the moment when it started but you can really sense everyone getting behind us now.”

In truth, the game should be played at their ground. It’s what the Cup is all about. Jumpers for goalposts and all that.

Football is about memories, and occasions, and if East kilbride have got this far, and drawn a big name, they should be able to enjoy the occasion.

In East Kilbride.

They have submitted a lit of their preferred optins, so cannot be faulted for profesionalism, as opposed to the SFA, who are too busy scrambling for tickets to see their favourites in action against Kilmarnock, after the draw went awry and the wrong new club got the home game against Celtic.

6. Bernabau , Madrid
7. Nou Camp, Barcelona

8. Maracana, Rio

9.Wembley, London

10. Allainz Arena , Munich.

The SFA countered with their list;

1: Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow

2: Auchenhowie Park, Lalaland

Mark Horner, top man at East Kilbride, has now had a taste of the SFA’s incompetence.

He said;

“I’m struggling to make sense of all this now.

“I can’t believe we’re this far down down the line and the venue is still up for debate. We actually sent an email to the SFA over the weekend asking them to reconsider the decision on the venue for the tie due to the demand for tickets.

“Our secretary Dave McKenna sent the email and we were waiting to hear back before pressing ahead with any plans for the tie. Thankfully we hadn’t started making plans after hearing this.

“I just assumed New Douglas Park was available. We didn’t think for one minute nobody at the SFA had contacted Hamilton Accies to ask if was okay.

“The SFA said they would help us massively because we are the new boys. They said they would help us from A to Z in every matter whether it was ticket printiing, security or segregation. Now we have to go back to the SFA and see what’s going on.”

Good luck with that.

Ljuban Crepulja has returned to Croatia , and it seems he didn’t buy a return ticket, which will please some people;

Instead, its back to looking at loans for players that we aren’t going to buy but will just piss everyone off when they go back to Manchester City, still don’t get a game and end up somewhere else on a massive wage we can’t afford but made sure he was worth.

Deila said, reading from the paper handed to him by Lawwell;

I wouldn’t rule out a loan deal because you never know what might happen, but it would be fair to say that we would hopefully be looking at it becoming a permanent move.”

Can someone just get into the office and wipe out all the contact numbers, emails and facebook friends connected to Manchester City ?

Please ?

Contact has apparently been made over the possible signing of Keiran Agard, currently with 22nd placed championship side Bristol city after someone noticed he’s scored three goals this season. Granted he did it in just six games, but Wikipedia, a sort of online Daily Record, ays he’s only scored once.

Presumably the scouts included the replays on the video they watched in the total.

Oh, and we’ve apparently sent someone to watch Christian Santos, a Venezuelan at NEC Nijmegan in the Netherlands.

HITC sport, who reported this, couldn’t even get his name right. It’s actually Christian Robert Santos Kwasnieski. And he recently-2014-had a severe knee injury.

So the remit given to scouts still appears to include players in the Dutch league with a piss poor medical history.

Yet with all this talk of players coming in, one wonders f they’ll get a crack at the first team. after all, the manager picks the starting eleven, and he appears to favour a certain type of player, which is not a bad thing;

“It is so important for me that we have players like Callum and Kieran in the team, for lots of reasons,”.

“They know the city, they know the culture, they know what it means to pull on the shirt and what they have to do to keep it. I always think that players who come from families who supported the club are willing to sweat blood for it – they give everything.

“But it is more than just that. I think it great for our academy players to look and see that it is possible to play here. You can come to Celtic and you can make it to the first-team – it is important to see the heroes every day. That is the message we want to put into the academy, that you can make it here.

“That is also why guys like Charlie [Mulgrew] and Scott [Brown] are so important too. Charlie came close, went away and came back and these guys are Mr Celtic now. Scott is working with some of our youth players in a coaching environment and keeping that strong Scottish spine is something we always want to do at this club.

“Of course, we will always look to do business in the transfer market because we want to be at top club. We see ourselves as a Champions League club and it is about building a team with a mixture of youth and experience that can take us to that level now.”

Thats the way forward, and not with loannees, has beens and players whose catchphrase is ” Shit,  my legs gone again. “

In Dutch.

Elsewhere, another ex-Celt burned his bridges in the media. Paul Hartley, now manager of Dundee won’t be getting a gig on the BBC’s showpiece Sportscene programme any time soon after he criticised Pat Nevin, the Scottish football guru, when the short arsed pen twiddler commented on Hartleys side, labelling them “disorganised “;

“I didn’t see it at first but I was told about it and then I saw it for myself.

“That’s why he (Nevin) has never managed. What would he know about the shape of my team?

“He picks out three incidents in the game. I saw the players’ performance on Friday night, I saw the shape of the team – and some of the stuff he was speaking about was garbage. That sums that programme up.

“He doesn’t know what he’s talking about – and it’s the same every week.

“That’s why I don’t watch it, it’s why I wouldn’t have any of my players going on it – and I wouldn’t go on it myself. It’s the worst programme I’ve seen.

“Does it have any credibility? No, it’s got none. It’s not what it used to be like, away back in the 1980s when you wanted to sit up and watch Sportscene on a Saturday night.

“Now you don’t want to watch it. You just hear people talking about it.

“He (Nevin) wasn’t a defender, he has never coached or managed a team. He has probably never seen us play this season. He can have his say but he’s talking rubbish.

“I’ve told you straight the programme is terrible. No matter what anybody says, it’s garbage – and I’m not the only one who thinks that by the way.”

Reading between the lines here, it seems Hartley isn’t impressed, and to be fair, he has a point.

Even the microphone doesn’t want to be anywhere near Nevin when he starts talking..

Former Chelsea ace Pat Nevin takes part in the Supporters Direct Scotland Fans' Roadshow in Glasgow

And as for the studio audience…

He can’t go until he’s locked the place up.

The Ibrox Evening times says that Mark Warburton is still looking to do business this month…

MARK WARBURTON is still hopeful he will add ‘one or two’ players to his Rangers squad before the close of the January transfer window next week.

Chris Jack, the author, is still hopeful of writing something that will not cause gales of laughter from non Ibrox supporters.

I’ve just finished reading “Living On A Volcano “, a book about the ins and outs and ups and downs of football management. Warburton was interbviewed for the book, and comes across as a bloke who knows what he is doing. Or , at least, thinks he does, which is fine. Its called confidence.

 However, he also appears to be someone who won’t suffer fools and needs honesty and transparency in his dealings with his board.

If I were a betting man, I’d be thinking , based entirely on what was in this book, that he will be at Fulham sooner or later.

With Susan Murphy dominating the caption competition it’s time for the rest of you to pull your socks up.

So heres todays…

Missing the point mate.
He’s not steeped in Celtic like Tierney is.That’s what RD was alluding to.
He’s playing well.As long as their good enough for Celtic,like many greats in the past,then his background has nothing to do with it.

100% true. His brother plays 5a sides in the 1996 rangers top. His father doesn’t go to watch him play. His mum is however and is regularly seen in the players lounge with the brother. Even tho he is a zombie

The fact he signed for Celtic as a boy suggest to me that despite his families leanings they have in fact supported his choice to play for Celtic.
Seems to me some within our support are just happy to pick the Manager up for just about anything now to make a point?
I could be wrong but hey ho what does it matter anyway?
It’s a daft conversation on the Internet.

@Holy McGregor signed for Celtic as a boy this means his family must have supported him even moreso given the fact they follow follow a Club from Govan.

Anyone who has sat and listened to Ronny Deila speak about matters concerning Celtic would be acutely aware that his English although very good is does not always come over quite as clear as it should?
When I read a comment from him or here him speak I am always aware what is being said may or may not be what he actually means?
The comments regarding McGregor and Tierney would be an example of this and I think some may be being a little over critical of the wording?
I get what he he means he is using both players as a current example to those in the Youth Set up as examples of how being dedicated at Celtic can open doors to first team action regardless of age.
That’s a positive I see no valid reason for trying to turn it into a negative by being pedantic.

If anyone from the SFA is looking in, maybe that fud that I ranted at a few weeks ago, let me talk you through what to do next.

1) Phone Peter Lawwell and ask him if Celtic would be nice enough to host the game.

2) Phone East Kilbride and ask them if it was possible, would you be happy to play the game in Scotland’s biggest stadium, Celtic park.

3) Phone Ibrox ( Do they have a phone, have they paid the bill)? and ask them if the creditors have been paid.

So Mc Gregor comes from a family of blue noses? Do I care? Not a jot. Actually no, I like it, the more that come from darkness into light the better. We had Mc Geouch come to the light, now Scott Allan, who might even play for Celtic one day.

Some are beyond help though, could you imagine the torn faced Ian Ferguson or Davie Dodds in the Hoops? Yikes.

Shame Mc Gregor’s brother hasn’t the money to buy a Rangers top post 1996. I guess they are historic artefacts now with Rangers being dead and all. It might be worth money on e bay. If he got as much as a pound he might be able to buy the new club with it. It was enough to buy the old one any way.

The solution to this whole venue issue is so obvious I don’t know why the fuss. It’s a policy the SFA have already put in place and so it’s just a case of them rolling out the existing policy:

The SFA have already made sure that all 2nd Rangers cup games are at Ibrox, so why not extend it to all teams – all games at Ibrox, all gate receipts to the Ibrox club, home goals count double for the Ibrox club’s trouble of putting the games on, all prize money to them too, everyone’s a winner (by everyone I mean 2nd Rangers, and so the SFA)

I have to confess I watched them for the first time last night since the hilarity filled game at Motherwell at the end of last season.

I’d not seen any thing of them play under Warbiola until last night, and thought I should check them out to see what sort of state they are in if they do come up.

Despite the bestest wishing of Chris Union Jack, Bungle et al, the Hearts team of last year were much more impressive in my opinion. This 2nd Rangers team were bang average, the wee lad Mc Kay/ Mc Kie Mc kee? was alright, the Waghorn one runs about a bit, but they were nothing special and apart from those two they were really really ordinary – Kenny Miller still turning out for them ffs. They might like to say they are coming, but imho it will take a fair few pound more from Dave King’s warchest before they would even be a top 6 team in the top league – Celtic Hearts and Aberdeen clearly ahead of them right now
