Celtic Diary Monday January 25: Frustrated Griffiths Goes OTT

Celtic continued their impressive run of performances on Saturday with a fairly comfortable 3-1 win over St. Johnstone in Glasgow.

As ever, the game looked totally different from the south stand than it does on the telly.

In the first half, the players looked to be seeking leadership, they appeared a little disjointed and there were an awful lot of slumped shoulders on display.

Mine, for instance.

However, in the second half, something clicked and St. Johnstone were lucky not be on the end of a mauling, despite how the edited package on BBC Sportscene made it look last night.

The biggest difference was that when Celtic attacked, there was another line of players sweeping in behind the first line, ready to support those up front in possession, and it was all done at pace.

That may look a little reckless, but there were a couple of players holding back in case the Perth men managed to break away, and overall the second half appeared to be a little more cerebral than of late.

I might be jumping ahead here, but perhaps another aspect of Deila’s coaching is encouraging players to think about what they are doing , as opposed to waiting for instructions. If a lack of leadership is a problem, then players must use their own initiative.

A reborn Gary Mackay Steven managed two goals, trebling his total for the season in just an hour and a half, and he was playing on the right, with a licence to cut into the middle.

Stuart Armstrong, doing the same job on the left, also found the net with a sweetly taken volley as he cut in. All three goals were fantastic examples of how to finish off a move, which no doubt infuriated a frustrated Leigh Griffiths, who would have struggled to hit a barn door  on this form.

Mind you, he did hit the target in the tunnel after the game, except the target this time was team mate James Forrest, who was on the end of a punch from the forward, with Griffiths moaning that he should have been put through by Forrest earlier in the game. In the tunnel, Forrest shouted over Griff, and then Griffiths pushed him and punched him.

Inexcusable.

Seems like Griffiths has still a ways to go when it comes to growing up, as the incident was described by watching St. Johnstone players as disgusting ned behaviour…..

During the game, to talk about more pleasant things, we thought that MacKay Steven had scored all three-I was getting a pie, or at least doing a crowdfunding appeal so i could afford one when the second goal went in, and heard the announcer credit him with the goal, and not Armstrong.

It surprised Armstrong as well;

“I didn’t realise at the time,“but he’d probably have taken it as well!

“But you could probably see the relief on my face when the ball went in. It’s just nice to be back playing well and winning games and being part of a good Celtic team right now.

“Right now it’s back to basics and concentrating on what I can do to help the team. It’s about keeping calm, working on the things you need to work on and the performances will come.”

Mackay Steven was pretty much accepted as man of the match, but he was certainly pushed close for the accolade by Calum MacGregor, who has now proved he can play anywhere in the line of three behind the striker, and his speed of though and movement makes him a serious candidate for the number ten role.

MacGregor, along with Scott Allan, can pick a pass within seconds of receiving the ball, something which hasn’t been evident in other players this season, and it wouldn’t be surprising if they form the basis of the midfield sooner rather than later.

Hope so, as that kind of movement is as close to the fabled Celtic Way as anything thats been on show for many years.

It’s easy to wear green tinted spectacles sometimes, and maybe overrate what you see on the park, but there are signs that change is coming, and there may be a few old heads who bow gracefully out of view between now and the summer.

If there is one complaint, though, its the lack of an enforcer in the middle, someone who will look out for the more fragile players when the going gets tough. Celtic do need a bit of steel to go with the flair, and at the moment there is no-one on the books who will provide that. With European football likely to be here before you know it, as it seems to start earlier every season, this needs to be addressed now, and not in the summer when any new additions are likely to be a little tired and not ready to hit the ground running.

On the transfer front, the media appears to be saying that Steven Fletcher is likely to join Celtic after all, which means he will play second fiddle to Leigh Griffiths, if of course the striker isn’t sold…

After all, Fraser Forster, who wanted to go, admittedly, was moved on and Craig Gordon came in to replace him for nothing.

Surely thats not the plan with Griffiths /Fletcher ?

Fletcher has reportedly said he would take a pay cut to move north, but the degree of that cut might yet surprise him.

As for Griffiths, its been reported that Brighton , who are in one of the English leagues, have done background checks on the player, which presumably means they’ve watched a video on You Tube, and are about to bid.

Record Sport understands Brighton or any other interested parties will be wasting their time making any official approach with Celtic adopting a firm stance.

The Scottish champions made a clear statement of their desire to keep Griffiths by handing him a bumper long-term contract just before Christmas which tied the hitman to the club until 2019.

The Record will be desperate to get something right after they were way out in their predictions about a new signing for Second Rangers, so they might actually be on to something here.

Especially as the player himself seemed to confirm he was staying;

Looks like a lot of clubs down south are getting excited about @Leighgriff09 . I hope we don’t sell him.

Celtic do need reliable and competent back up for Griffiths, should he lose form or fitness and at the moment only Carlton cole and Nadir Ciftci are in place.

Neither of whom inspire confidence, and it would just be our luck if Griffiths got injured just before the qualifiers…

It would be a surprise if Fletcher came in without a guarantee of first team football. Especially after showing commitment by taking a pay cut.

So we would have to look elsewhere, and therein lies  the problem.

We need a quality player who is prepared to sit on the bench.

That is going to be a problem. And we don’t need Griffiths to exacerbate it with his behaviour….

Although we could have a look at this one, purely for the hell of it;

Keith Jackson: Missing out on St Johnstone star Michael O’Halloran isn’t an option for Rangers chairman Dave King

After Jackson predicted that O’Halloran would be one of two “big ” signings for the Ibrox club, and the other, Toumani  Diagouraga went to Leeds instead, its actually Jackson who needs this one to go through more than King.

We hear that should O’Halloran decide to stay where he is, or move anywhere else, Jackson will be relegated to the horoscopes page, as it is felt his style and content would be more suited to those who at least don’t expect  a certain degree of accuracy.

Well, less accuracy than the rest of the paper, that is.

If he’s looking for a new office, we hear a suitable place is on the market just down the road from him…

By the way, we have sorted out how to get past an enthusiastic police force who may be looking to board your bus while you are heading to the game and steal all your beer… We used this little number on Saturday…

Embedded image permalink

It worked, so those of you who run CSCs might want to employ the double bluff method… I believe you can hire this little cruiser, though I’d wait until the weather picks up before making that call.

Makes you kind of hope we get a trip to Koln some time soon.

It appears the usual suspects have been making the usual trip to Manchester, though;

Celtic are in talks to sign Manchester City winger Patrick Roberts on loan for the remainder of the season, according to Sky sources

Roberts joined City from Championship side Fulham last summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £12m, but has featured just once in the Premier League this season – a four-minute cameo in the 4-1 defeat at Tottenham in September.

The 18-year-old has twice appeared in the Capital One Cup for City, coming on as a substitute in the victories over Sunderland and Crystal Palace.

Thats what we need. another loan player who can’t get a game in Manchester.

Whoever keeps recommending this line of recruitment should be told to give it a rest, and get off his arse and look for players who might want to play for Celtic for longer than a couple of months.

If he comes, and plays well, he will be gone again. If he does a Blackett and proves to be either disinterested or just plain shite, then it will simply cause disruption in the dressing room.

This is not the way forward, and seeing how long it took to replace Jason Denaayer, who was never going to be a permanent signing, should be , in itself, a reason not to go down this path again.

Susan Murphy id dominating the caption competition, with several great suggestions. Apricole is running her close, though.

What will they think of this one ?

Morning Glory… I see what you did there Ralph 😉
Seems to me wee thumb is fast developing a greedy streak which is fine so long as he takes his chances when they fall.
He was spot on about Forrest though I don’t think we need any of that shite over Forest being goal hungry too?
Shite does happen though as they say.
Not like he booted him in the face is it?
It is a mans game after all..well it used to be.
If an offer over £12m comes in fists of fury will be punted in a flash because as someone kindly pointed out Giffiths has only contributed to under a third of the goals scored already this season.
In this System you are not overly reliant on the loan striker.
Though I would prefer we kept him myself.

not like he booted him in the face???? he assualted his team mate, in an unprovoked attack!! this is a celtic player behaving infront of other teams and officials in that way!! maybe, behind closed doors then it can be brushed a side but not infront of outsiders!! he should of been sent off!! a disgrace for one of our own to behave in such a manner and tony stokes was suspended for 2 weeks for alot less!!!!

Poor wee Jamsie, well everything else has been tried to get him to find a hoops shirt with a pass so maybe a bunch of fives might improve his delivery . Get rid of 2 goals Forrest and keep 20 goals Griffiths simples! It’s not rocket science . So many honourable gentlemen on here today.☘☘☘

Never booed a Celtic player in my life. ! But that does not, mean you can’t be critical where it is merited JF flatters to deceive most of the time . If he worked at his final pass and stopped coming inside he would be a much better player for the team . He has positives in his pace and trickery but without that final ball he would be as well running up and down Janefield Street. You all know that is true but Jamsie can do no wrong for some people with no objectivity. Can he develop his game ? Better askJF but he has been atCP a long time and he is no longer Wee Jamsie . Why do you think he is not the first name ontheteam sheet every week? Calum McGregor has stolen a March on JF because he contributes consistently to the team. It is all about the team not JF..☘☘☘

Ralph,i have been saying all year Celtic are soft in the spine especially without Broonie.
Shirley its the Managers job to instruct the team not to leave things up to the players,if you do, you get the Malmo away Molde results. He has to take responsibility and guide the team prior to and during the game.
As for Griffiths actions,a cowardly attack on another player is unforgivable, the actions of a thug,if it was up to me i would give him his jotters, nobody but nobody is bigger than the club.

I totally agree about Griffiths (if it is true). Inexcusable. He’s lacking in professionalism. If he is not punished it will show inconsistency following the stokes incident. What do you want to be remembered for, Leigh??! Acting the ned or as one of the great strikers for the best club in the world??? Still hasn’t proved himself against quality opposition and in Europe. Has a long way to go in my eyes. No one is bigger than the club.

Ive said for a while now that brown should be the enforcer who sits back and does the donkey work , that would let him lead from deep and let the ball players make things happen.

One issue , what does allan have to do to get a start

schoosh71

You could see LG was getting frustrated during the game, with him dropping deeper and wide, there is nothing wrong with that except, he needs to try a take the center-half out with him, to make some space for his teammates.

There is and old cliche that is probably as old as the game itself and is called ‘switching play’.

This built on the predicated ‘fact’ that the enemy (opposition) team is weakest in the space between the fullbacks and center-half’s. So if ‘our’ right fullback has the ball, the weakest point in the enemies team is between ‘their’ Right fullback and ‘their’ center-half.

We seem in to much of a rush to get the ball forward when we are playing against a 10 man defense. As was the case on Saturday. When CG had the ball in his hands the St. Johnstone team retreated to the center-half line, leaving only our goalie and 2 center-half’s in our side of the pitch.

Why are we playing into the enemies hands, they want to condense the game, we want to expand it. Our left sided center-back, our left-sided full back and our left-sided defensive midfielder, should be paying a game of keep-ball for they have a whole ‘HALF’ to play it in.

We need to try and entice the enemy out of their own half, with the knowledge that all the team members nowhere the ball is going to end up. in-between the enemies left fullback and center-half, the exact same applies to the right side.

The same tactic can be applied further up the pitch with the left winger, left defensive midfielder and left full back, with the only intention of drawing the position defenders out of position. A quick ‘switch’ of play and you have the right winger baring down on the goalie, ‘IF’ everybody is on the same page.

The Number 10 position is a bit different, presuming he receives the ball beyond the enemies midfield, he needs to drive straight at the center-half’s and force either of them towards him and with just a simply rolling of the ball into the area that the center-half has vacated, you have your center-forward through on goal.

Also by the number 10 driving directly at the center-half’s he has the option to play the ball in the space between either full-backs and again giving the wingers/center-forwards an opportunity to get a shot on goal.

Only my ‘pishs-tained’ opinion. HH

Scott Brown is not the answer to this enforcer role any longer sadly. Hes getting on in years and picking up injuries with increasing frequency – no ones fault, just the march of time.

But we do need at least one if not more “hard men” types” players prepared to take a booking for the team to stop the counter attack, t get in among the oppostion and break up their rythmn. Like the Bear – we are just too nice to play against – everyone happy to play ten yard sideways passes and keep some sort of shape, but not get in the faces of the opponentns and make them want to get off the pitch.

If Griffiths did punch his team mate I d expect him to get a fine and a talking to, to suggest he’s never to play for Celtic again, come on lets get real – fights between players is commonplace by all ex pros accounts and he is too valuable a resource to be excluded from the team or sold on the cheap in disgrace. Principles in football are fine, so long as they dont hurrt results or the finances

Scott Brown is 30 years old he’s one of the fittest players at Celtic he has at least 4 years still in him but matbe not as a box to box Midfielder.
Could he sit and play the holding role behind 4 fast Attackers?
Of course he could.
29-31 used to be regarded as a players prime in Football apparently not so in the modern game?
Bullshit.
Scott won’t NEED to do the running once we have Johansen Armstrong Rogic GM-S Forrest etc etc flying the ball can do the work.

I don’t know what any of this is based on – what Ralph said is not what the papers are reporting. They say that Forrest was pissed off with Griffiths for not passing – not the other way around, and none of them mention a punch at all, never mind from behind.

If that’s the case, it seems unlikely that Griffiths randomly punched Forrest.

I think I’ll wait until there is some reliable evidence before calling for Griffiths to be hung drawn and quartered.

Guys if Griffiths did punch a team mate then there will be a process, it’s not that unusual but it is unacceptable if it reoccurs. I thought we played better on Saturday than some of you did, the passing was scintillating at times. St Johnston defended further up the pitch than I expected but their keeper made two maybe three really classy saves. The much ridiculed Hamilton drew with the “cousins” maybe Derek should phone Neilsen and explain how to win with 10 men, mind you beating Dundee 1-0 wasn’t title runner up form even! Sleepless nights for Neilsen and McInnes!

I’m surprised you guys are making so much of this, I bet you Leigh and James are best pals today.
This sort of thing happens on training grounds every day, just let the boys sort it out for themselves.

bgbhoy

your right monti, on the training ground things can happen, behind closed doors away from the eyes of officials and opposing teams… this was an assualt on a team mate which was totally unprovoked and brought a response from a fellow member club as ‘shocking’ and ‘ned’ is this the kind of behaviour and image we would like associated with our club? we can take the moral high ground over other teams not paying there taxes and creditors but we must allow our players to attack one another and we turn a blind eye? what if this gets put in the referees match report? and the sfa ban griffiths then we dont have him for abderdeen next week?? its not on and we should not be condoning this type of behaviour… its not what happened monti its the manner in which it did!! totally disgusting

@charlie saiz because your the biggest Ronny man in here. Why on earth are we going for another winger when we have at least 6 players that can play that position and on a 6 month loan? Why does the manger say one thing and do another when it comes to loan signings. Where is this in the grand plan of developing our own?

Charlie Saiz
Reply to  Bgbhoy

I back all our Managers until I feel they no longer warrant it Bg.
He does so therefore I will.
On the winger situation as far as I am aware we only have Calvin Miller coming through as a winger but going off what I have seen he’s a good bit off hitting selection yet?
Ronny stated when he arrived he envisaged using wingers in his System.
Hence why we had Tonev on loan then bought Mackay-Steven.
Forest who is injury prone has yet to sign his offer so it makes sense to be looking at a replacement I would have thought?

Bgbhoy
Reply to  Charlie Saiz

Forrest has been given time to think about the offer. Like all players do. Is the winger not just for 6 months now? What would the point of that. James. Gms. Armstrong. Cal Mac. That’s 4 right now

celtsfan67

Reply to  Bgbhoy

Agree Bg. We have plenty in midfield with the exception of perhaps one defensive player. If we can get a quality defensive midfielder and a good striker then I will be happy. No more loan signings. I don’t want Celtic developing other teams players. HH

I have decided to say this. I don’t want ma bairn growing up thinking it’s jist fine tae go punching a TEAM MATE. It sends the wrong message. This is a guy who will have his name on the back of thousands of supporters of he keeps this scoring up. Public infractions deserve public punishment. So that the young and impressionable understand it’s not ok.

Would get rid off Forrest for talking out off school between players wages and a fight between team mates or better still tell him to pick who he talks to.

Buckie1967

I just heard about this spat on this colum in last 30 min never heard it anywhere else, so who was it that witnessed this brutal assault did anyone that’s put up a comment on this page or was it one off Forrests pals that said it happened did the 2 players say anything about it.
If it was St Johnstone players i would expect it plastered all over the media and blogs. ???

And if our club has deployed a wage cap (which it has) the fans have a right to know. It’s our season book money that is being spent. No one on this site has claimed to know what every player is on and what bonuses for goals etc are in play. If there is a wage cap then it’s across the board. Not just individuals. So stop trying to claim people know things they shouldn’t when it’s a generalisation of the whole squad

Uralius

Reply to  Bgbhoy

BG.
I completely believe that there is a wage cap. Probably why our players be getting ball greedy. All of the attacking players want their goal bonuses.
However, in this situation more often than not people see the outburst and the events leading up to it are “he said, she said bullshit.” I do not doubt for a second that A-type, “I’m fucking Leigh Griffiths I am” ran at Forrest and punched him.
It also would not suprise me for a minute to find out that after watching Leigh Griffiths psyche out all of the other attacking players around him for a year James decided to see if Leigh could handle being on the receiving end of such mind games.
I suppose we have our answer.

Oh and those bikes are available in every major German City. Some of them will drive the bikes on a trailer up to 60 miles. One of the old lads at work was retiring after 35 years on the place so we got one in and cycled it around. Even the slightest Hill was hard going. The bike in Munich was much better. Maybe one day we’ll end up drawn with Monchenglabach in Europe. Fuck Koln they are Germany’s Huns.
