Celtic Diary Thursday January 21: Celts Face Another New Club In Cup

East kilbride will be Celtic’s next obstacle in the quest for the treble will be newcomers East kilbride, a club in only its fifth year of existence. for their support, and for all involved with the club, the tie is a dream come true and it truly reflects the magic of the revamped scottish cup, proof that sometimes the SFA do get things right. There cannot be a fan of the side who didn’t take an immense amount of pleasure from being listed with the big boys of European football. Thats what the game is all about to me. Embedded image permalink For Celtic there will be a sense of deja vu as the same thing happened last year, when they faced Second Rangers , who were only in the second -or third-year of their existence, providing a huge boost to their season as they faced the biggest club in the land, and allowing them a big pay day and a chance to perform on a stage with the country’s best players. The game will be played at New Douglas Park in Hamilton,on the 7th of February,  giving locals a second chance to have a look at Ronny Deilas free scoring all action side, which will please them. And it will be televised, with special screens being set up around the east end of Glasgow to allow for that special feeling that comes with the fairy tale of the Cup; Embedded image permalink The SFA might have the occasional bright idea, but the league continues to show it hasn’t got a clue. Hot on the heels of the idea for facial recognition technology to identify anyone who might be enjoying themselves at the football, comes another cracker, as the BBC reports;

Scottish football could be moving towards a player draft system under new proposals put forward by the Scottish FA and backed by national manager Gordon Strachan.

Its aim is to get younger players more competitive game time.

The plan foresees Scottish Premiership clubs providing around five under-20’s players for a lower league draft pot.

Club representatives were told about the plans during a presentation at Hampden Park on Wednesday.

It was headed up by Strachan and SFA performance director Brian McClair.

The SFA will now look to set up a steering group and invite club representatives to take part before reporting back with a firm proposal.

In a system similar to American Football’s National Football League college draft, club picks could depend on league position – with the team at the bottom of the Championship possibly having first pick of the player pool.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, one Scottish Premiership chairman described the proposals as “innovative and interesting” and said all ideas on the table should be listened to.

The draft plans were one of many proposals discussed as the SFA pushed forward with its review of the game’s youth development system.

It is understood that the SFA is also keen to cut the number of so-called elite players in the current youth academy system in an attempt to create better competition and a best versus best environment.

Although Labour laws have been whittled down to next to nothing, theres still a clause which prevents people being told where they have to work, so its unlikely this one has ben thought through. but thats no surprise, as thinking is not the Leagues strong point. Come to think of it, they don’t have any strong points. Meanwhile, manager ronny Deila, tired of piss poor hacks in Scotland, has given a fairly revealing interview to VG Sporten, in norway.

Deila about life in Glasgow: – It’s like living in a fishbowl

Presumably he’s on about the rain.

eetings Celtic Ross County in the semifinals of the League Cup, in a neutral court, then the only real challenger for the league title, Aberdeen, away – and then 5th round of the FA Cup three days later.
Ronny Deila (40) goes immediately into a week where much of the Celtics season will be decided. Even yesterday the manager of the animal kingdom which he will describe what it’s like to live with Celtic and Glasgow.

– It’s like living in the goldfish bowl Glasgow, says Deila in this interview with VG. He believes that the team is so great, and the interest in the city so enormous, that he and the players live on the show just about every day throughout the season. Ronny Deila have – at least outwardly – receivedsome criticism for the lack of results in Europe. The loss against Malmo over two games, which prevented a place in the Champions League and without a win in the group stage of Europa League, led to massive external criticism the Norwegian manager.

Unexplained

– Losses in Europe characterized the whole environment. And the most disappointing was the defeat to Malmo away, because we were extremely weak in the game. Celtic should and ought settled this at home, but we conceded goals in corner inexplicably. We had hardly had backwards on the corner of the 70 recent fighting, says Deila.

When the club was eliminated in the final hurdle before the Champions League, also disappeared more players. And Deila had to build new, especially in defense. – Everything became more uncertain after Malmo knocked us out. And you notice it defensively, we had major changes, and we have conceded too many goals.Last season we released not more than 18 goals in total in the league. Now we have already 18 backwards, telling Deila – the difference between 2014/15 and 2015/16.  Offensively is Deila very satisfied (“we will score lots of goals”), and now runs the club into a very important timeof the season. The aim is to take three trophies in Scotland, league, FA Cup and ligacup. This weekend is the league match at home against the only team in the British Isles with the letter “J” in its name – St Johnstone. But from 31 January and even February 6th season will probably be defined. During the week meetings Celtic Ross County in the semifinals of the League Cup, in a neutral court, then the only real challenger for the league title, Aberdeen, away – and then 5th round of the FA Cup three days later. – It is of course an important period. And with full flap, we have won five titles in two seasons when it’s all over. And it’s great fun, but it’s very different than back home in Norway. The requirements can not be compared, mean Deila. And also talks about culture, hierarchy, where it is difficult to get to “we-feeling”.

As the Norwegian Cup

– There is much “I”. But that’s it, and you must adapt, says Ronny Deila. He also mentions the frenzied match the number his team going through. – The season runs from June 22 to 20 May, and often we play 30 games more than any other in Scotland, because of European and domestic cups. It’s tough, it’s about keeping people injury free and in shape – and it’s about getting charged batteries. It is not easy. For when Celtic play matches in Scotland, it is like a 2nd round match in the Norwegian Cup – every weekend, visual adds Ronny Deila. In addition, the eternal pressure to be good in Europe. It disappears either.

The goal: Champions League

– I’m starting to get some experiences from European fixtures now, since I’ve led 26 matches in Europe. The aim is to reach the Champions League, and create a team that can do well there. There we can manage through this season, but it gets harder and harder to get hold of good players. England destroys market. A club like Celtic is enormous in Scotland, but it manages not to compete with clubs in English Championship (second level) about players now. So far it has come, says Celtic manager Ronny Deila.   Thats as good as an interview you will see with Deila, as none of the questions concerned the entity at ibrox, and he was allowed to talk freely about his own thoughts on Celtic. Theres a couple of things that stand out, notably the comment about how difficult it is to form a collective, which to me, at least, points to the existence of the much rumoured cliques. And , of course, the amount of games Celtic play, something that is even missed by supporters who bemoan players energy and attitude at times. From the same paper comes this headline;

Celtic vant 8-1 – Stefan Johansen ute av troppen

Stefan Johansen wasn’t in the squad for the Hamilton game, and today there is talk of a £5m bid from Aston Villa. A number of fans have been on his back of late, whilst not even consiodering what possible reasons he may have for his lack of form, and you’ll notice i used the word “fans ” there, and not “supporters “. If Johansen is to leave, it will be a shame, especially if he thinks the fans have driven him out, which after the recent twitter Q and A abuse , you really couldn’t  blame him if he decided fuck em, and moved off to wages new. Speaking of players moving out, and there will be one or two this month, we hear that John Kennedy has told James Forrest that the management doesn’t loike him-whther that mean personally or professionally, I’m not sure, but it’s almost certain he’ll be moving on. Coincidentally, he too has been the fans whipping boy, and you really can’t blame him either if he thought fuck em, and moved to wages new. Using the yardstick of the VG interview with Ronny Deila as proper, grown up journalism, consider this story, which revolves around this statement, issued on twitter , by the latest pressure group designed to persuade journalists, businesses and anyone else they can think of to stop hating Rangers, or second Rangers, or, indeed , Third Rangers when they come along. The group concerned are; Embedded image permalink you’ll note they’ve deleted the account now. The statement, which would be quite unnerving if you thought about it too deeply, and remembered that there are any number of fruitcakes out there, read;   It started and finished within the same week, which is about what we have come to expect from that lot, but not before it upset a few journalists, notably Graeme Spiers;

“If you lose your children, don’t say you weren’t warned…” Please tell me these Rangers nutters aren’t for real.

They are, and I’ve found out where they live.

Evidence suggests huge ninth planet exists past Pluto at solar system’s edge

That evidence presumably includes the ramblings of some of its inhabitants who have landed on Earth but still live in an alternative reality. I suppose it would be difficult to adjust. By the way, as a responsible parent, I’d also like to warn you about possible dangers that may face your own children in these troubled times. We hear quite often on the news that they could be exposed to radical and indeed dangerous ideology, and heres a helpful guide to allow you to spot any behavioural changes that could lead to your child becoming ostracised by society. Embedded image permalink There are other, more socially acceptable ways of getting a seat on the Celtic board. For other weirdo’s out there, there was fantastic news this morning; Photo published for A New Largest Known Prime Number Was Discovered They’ve discovered the worlds largest prime number, a number which can only be divided by itself and one. Even more depressing is that someone, somewhere has been waiting for that news…

prime numbers are used for encryption purposes on the internet. Very useful! And cool!

That chap will probably be staying in tonight.

And tomorrow.

I’m staying in tonight, because we are recording a podcast !

Keep your eye on the twitter account@etims.net for further news.

And cast your eye on this picture, which will be the second consecutive caption competition where we actually announce a winner.

Embedded image permalink

That’s because Susan Murphy won yesterdays by a country mile, and from now on I’ve decided to pick a winner, so that we can give the impression of it being a real competition. Except for the lack of prizes.

At least until I set up a premium number where you can find out if you’ve won.

Sorry i’m a bit late with the Diary today, been having to rewrite it a few times due to my new autocorrect function. Sorted it now, but i hope theres a special place in Hull reserved for the bastard who invented it.

Players moving on: Both Jamses & Stephan have had a poor season. James has not lived up to his promise and quite frankly manages to hide in the majority of games ( quite a feat in a large football stadium) Its a shame as he is obviously very talented but sooo inconsistant. Maybe a move will help the lad?

Stefan has been dreadful for most of the season and runs about like a headless chicken at times, beginning to remind of Graveson. There is no doubt he tries hard (maybe to hard) but again sooo inconsistant.

I also think Kris Commons needs to move on as I wonder what problems he causes behind the scenes? Magic on his day and a match winner at times but has more success passing to the opposition.

We now have plenty of cover in midfield and hopefully a DM to come. Thanks for the memories Bhoys both good and bad. I wish you well but we have to move on. Bye!

bg, we have some in a support who sing with great gusto about a has been who can hardly run the length of himself, who was put on a 2 year contract (still can’t get my head round that one) and yet we have guys who will give players like James, one of our own, pelters at the drop of a hat.
I’m scunnered by it and now feel it’s time to join the vast ranks and stay away from Celtic Park.

There is something dodgy going on behind the scenes, something divisive, dont know what yet,but it will come out sometime of that i am certain.

For £5m? Absolutely.

He did well last season but he gives the ball away too easily and looks like his heart isn’t in it any more.

I think the Bhoy Christie, if played in his correct position (attacking centre mid)….could be a cracker. Great technique and passing ability. Far more to offer than Johansen IMO.

Hector,
We will have to agree to disagree mate, Johansen was our best player by a distance last year yet you say you would have accepted £5m for him last year?
That is the kind of mentality that Lawwell applies.
I agree with you about the potential of Ryan Christie, I think the guy has developed over the last year and he clearly has an affection for Celtic.
So does Liam Henderson and Anthony Stokes.

I would just like to see Johansen hit the heights of last season, we were a better side With him in it! HH

I would move on the following players due to cliques and general input this Season:
Mulgrew – Too slow and we have a replacement in the Dane.
Commons – Too slow and has too much influence I think.
Johansen – At £5m I would snap their hands off and replace with Finnbogason fo £4m
Scepovic – Never worked out hope he moves on all the best
Ciftci – Sorry for me he’s another who hasn’t worked out I would sell and give Nesbitt a chance
Forrest – Can be a real danger but for me not consistent enough and has not improved in 2 years. Also injury prone

forrest- a player who won the cup for celtic last year? changed the game completley when he came on scores and wins a penalty (missed i know)

tore fenerbache to shreds, was magical at ross county

commons- has two much influence? that be the same commons that none of the players take any notice of and allow him to get in with his media darling image??

mulgrew- one of the best centre backs we have yet move him on as we have a dane that no one has seen play?? and who is celtic through and through and you need that in any succesful team!!!

The Danger and trend of resent years to move on players and replace with less or hopeful/potential players… and they in turn become the next year’s deadwood. Not that I’m referring to these guys as deadwood, but you get the idea.

I don’t understand why Celtic don’t purchase all the promising talent in Scotland and loan out to other clubs, and or develop in house, akin to the large European clubs that have 100’s of players out on loan so they have first option on them should they develop into players

Nobody can complete with Celtic financially in Scotland so the ground work for continual improvement and long term domination must be to ensure all promising youngsters are identified at a young age, and Celtic should have at least a share in these players.
The only way Celtic will continually perform in European completions is to grow their own players, thus all potential talent in Scotland should be on the radar. Focus the scouting efforts in Scotland and keep the money circulating within Scottish football…this is nothing new it’s the way it once was rather than flooding teams with 3rd rate foreign imports.

Back to Basics is the only way to sustain Scottish football in the future.

If both players have been offered a contract extension and haven’t signed them, there is only one option available to the club.

I love the way the American schools do sports, but anything involving the SFA is a nonstarter. It needs to be a government initiative were all secondary schools have a health & fitness coach and a sports scientist employed and not the janitor, so that ever kid has an equal opportunity to excel at their chosen sport.

As reported in the Herald earlier, the first ever RFC 1873 board meeting took place, with the directors of the club. Who waited patiently for their turn with the affectionately known goat, ‘billy Big Bawz’.

BGbhoy I agree Charlie is an out and out tim but so are most of us on this site. How many games has Charlie been fit for in the last 18 months, how has he justified a new contract?

The same reason Carlton Cole was signed. He is good for the dressing room. He’s Celtic through and through and we nee that in and around the the park 365 days a year

Why don’t we just sign Frankie Boyle or Kevin Bridges?
Both Tims and would keep moral up no end especially in the treatment room?
Frankie must have at least a 2 hour show worth of Boerrigter jokes by now?

Forrest and Johansen might not be playing their best football but that’s no reason to get rid of them. I’m told, before my time, that Danny McGrain had a bad spell where he had very little game time and things just went wrong for about a season and half. Would the same folk wanting rid of James and Stefan have wanted to sell Danny?

Johansen has a player in there, when he was at Stromsgodset everything quick went through him, in my opinion, the ideal replacement for Commons. Forrest is our most direct player, can make things happen and has to play the most difficult passes; trying to pick out Griffiths when he’s outnumbered by taller defenders, his crossing is far better than what McGeagys was. Things aren’t helped when Deila plays the midfielders out of position.

Has it escaped you notice that Brown has been out for an extended period,Bitton has also had to miss out a few creating an issue in the DM area of the Park?

I would put Armstrong at DM before Johansen, especially if Commons isn’t playing, you could even make a case for Ambrose.

Charlie Saiz

Johansen played there under Ronny in Norway probably why he chose him over Armstrong.
McGregor did fine I thought and I have already said Efe could do a job in there no probs.
He looked fine in there on his debut for us and has played there for Nigeria.
Needs must when yo lose key men to injury and suspension Doc had Mulgrew been fit he would have stepped in.

The ‘draft’ system is nonsense, it’s produced players like Adu and Altidore. Sounds more like how the SFA can write off a family holiday to Disneyland as fact-finding or research.

I agree it a shocking idea.
Bring back a reserve League or allow the big sides to put a B team into the Championship to up the quality a bit.

I would love to see a B team in the second tier, just the thought of actually watchin the hoops x 2,and possible future first teamers….win win in my book.

Doc,
I like the B team concept, our youngest players playing in a competitive league could bring them on.
We could put Efe in the B team to practice heading, control, judgement and positional sense, not to mention distribution….all the things he currently lacks!

The thought of guys like Tierney being take from us to spend a year at a part-time club in a lower league is criminal.

Monti

So to revise, we are to all stick together and back the team no matter what.
By sticking together, to some that means getting rid of a particular player ( James Forrest) who has one us many big games and scored in cup finals and also scored the goal against Shakhtar Karagandy to put us into the CL group stages and earn the club £20-25m?
We are to get rid of last year’s player of the year because so far he hasn’t hit top form?
We are to get rid of Kris Commons because he is too slow, even though his fellow peers voted him Scotland’s player of the year, two seasons ago?
Stay with me now.
We are to play Efe Ambrose in DM, lol, a player who has made the club and himself a laughing stock because he can’t perform in the clubs most important matches, in Europe.
We are to show patience and faith in a ‘ manager ‘ who can’t put a winning team on the park in Europe and has actually made the team worse in Europe since he took over?
A manager who drops Kris Commons for the clubs biggest match in Europe ( Maribor), our most creative player at the time and our main goal threat for a man just arrived from Cardiff reserve side?

But hey, it get’s better, Liam Henderson and Anthony Stokes, two players with a love for the club, sent packing to Hibs?
Bring in an overweight player and give him a two year contract?

Never mind all that tho, everything is going to be fine, the players might even get the Ketchup back!

Fitness, sports science, my arse.
Look at the smoking habits of Johan Cruyff and i’m sure Robert Prosinecki smoked about 20-30 a day, he was world class!

You seem to be a bit hung up over that Bg like I said I deal in facts when you have something more solid than say so then of course I am all ears.
Until then I shall keep to my tried and trusted formula.
After all it’s seen me more right than wrong in life up till now.
Nothing personal bud.
Ps I stopped reading the afore mentioned stuff a while back life on here is far more pleasant as a result.

Quite, interesting to note that you are being asked to provide evidence, yet when someone makes a fanciful claim and is asked to provide erm evidence, they recoil and insist they don’t need to?

Very odd.

F0rrest & Johansen couldn,t lace Danny Mcgrain,s boots. When Danny was out for the season in 77 the support could not wait for his return. He was considered one of the best fullbacks in the world at the time.

I see the head coach is ” hopeful ” over new deals for Forrest, Mulgrew and Rogic?

If it’s about money, would it not have made sense to terminate Boerrigter’s contract, sell Ambrose and Izaguirre, not bring Cole to the club I’m the first place and recall Scepovic from loan?

And some say this guy has a plan?
