Celtic Diary Sunday January 3. Normality Resumed. Almost.

again, apologies for the tardiness of todays offering. I’m back at work tomorrow so everything should be back to normal.

Especially my liver. Which to be fair, has passed the annual inspection with flying colours.

Although there was an embarassing moment this morning when I actually woke myself up with a fairly loud emission of wind. Which at least means the neighbours probably won’t come around next year to show us their christmas holiday photies.

Celtic overcame Partick and Stephen Finnie yesterday by the odd goal in one, which has the support divided on the managers future, but with headlines like this, can you blame the doubters ?

Leigh Griffiths admits he dug under-fire boss Ronny Deila

out of a hole with late winner for 10-man Celtic.

Does he ? Does he really ?  Lets see what he actually said ..

THE striker, who hadn’t played in five weeks after a calf injury, was brought on at half-time against Partick and hit the winner in the last minute.

SNS Group
Griffiths takes the acclaim of Deila

LEIGH GRIFFITHS last night admitted he dug under-fire boss Ronny Deila out of a hole with a last-minute winner for 10-man Celtic .

The striker, who hadn’t played in five weeks after a calf injury, was taken aback to be brought on at half-time against Partick as the Hoops toiled to end a two-month run without a home win.

After losing Nir Bitton to a red card with 22 minutes left, the game looked set to end scoreless, threatening to stretch their winless streak at Parkhead to five since Halloween.

But as the frustration grew around the ground, he paid the manager back for his gamble with his 20th goal of the season with just 30 seconds left to open up a three-point gap on Aberdeen at the top .

And Griffiths admitted: “He probably needed it.

“I never saw the gaffer celebrating. I was just concentrating on myself but he was the one breathing a huge sigh of relief because we hadn’t won here since Halloween when we beat Aberdeen.

“So we had to get the monkey off our back.”

Of course, there is another way of telling the story….

Battling Celts secure the points with late winner.

or we could try

Dodgy Ref fails to save Jags.

or even

Supersub Leigh back on song

or maybe

Deilas Celtic prove they can fight.

You get the point. Because when the game was over, Celtic had won. Despite a few honest mistakes, and despite not being at the top of their game, they beat a resilient Partick Thistle, who had lost only one of their previous ten games, by knuckling down and getting on with it.

During the game, it would have been hard to take anything positive from the match, but the mark of a good side is to win playing badly, and okay, it might not be the Celtic Way , immortalised in song if not actually in reality, but it did prove that there are some in the team who have that little extra that is needed to win on days like yesterday.

With multi media access to the games these days, the smallest mistake can become a crisis. In the old days before satellite tv, players could get away with the occasional off day, but these days they are expected to be world class not only in every game, but in every minute of that game.

We maybe weren’t direct enough, and were maybe a little indecisive and ponderous in the final third, but the plyers didn’t chuck it, amnd just like we used to do, secured a late winner that could prove to be the turning point of the season. At least in attitude on the park.

Goalscorer Griffiths said afterwards;

“There was relief inside the stadium and it was a release when the goal went in,”

“Games at home you’re always expected to win comfortably but we know what Thistle are about. They went to Aberdeen and battled during the week and got a decent point and I think they tried to do the same here.

“All credit to them, they came here, had a game-plan and played well but I kept saying to the boys, ‘Keep going, we’re going to get one more chance.’ Thankfully it fell to my feet and I managed to tuck it away.

“If you can’t play with pressure from the home fans you shouldn’t be at a club like this. The players can handle it. We’ve got big-game players like myself, Kris Commons, Nadir Ciftci, whoever is playing to create chances.

“If it’s 5-0 or 1-0, as long as we get three points and stay top of the league that’s all that matters.”

“I had only trained yesterday. I had done some hard stuff on the bike on Thursday so I was a bit surprised when the gaffer said: ‘You’re going on, get ready.’

“Thankfully it paid off. It feels like I’ve been out for three months, never mind three weeks.”

Hang on, maybe the headline should have been.

Ronny’s Gamble Pays Dividends

And he deserves praise for changing things, especially as it could have gone wrong.

Tell you what does matter, and thats the referees performance. Shamefully one sided, and I’d like to clarify something. There is no suggestion that the men in the middle are in any way being influenced by the authorities to, er, make it difficult for Celtic to get this treble.

Nah.

This lot don’t need any outside influence.

We know they are at it. That doesn’t need any clarification, but while the team isn’t playing well, any complaints of that nature will be seen as churlish, which is why I didn’t mention the refereeing at the Motherwell game, which was unsurprisingly leniant to the Fir Park cloggers.

As it was yesterday, and it really wasn’t surprising when Nir Biton was sent off for jumping too high. actually, it was a surprise. I expected Stefan Johansen to be expelled for running too fast, or Craig Gordon to get punished for handball.

We need to keep an eye on this, and as a club put a wee bit pressure on them, because they will keep doing it.

The press won’t do it, they are far too interested in keeping attention away from the latest scam at Ibrox, where Dave kong has apparently raised the money to pay off the debt to Mike Ashley, suspiciously soon after he went to Park Gardens to, er, say hello, hello.

Scottish football is teetering on the edge again, just four years after it was supposed to crash and burn.

The press are terrified of it, the supporters aren’t being told whats going on.

After all, denial seemed to work when the old basket of assets was sold, and miraculously re-emerged as the same club.

I managed to get through to the SFA and arranged a meeting to talk about this, and asked them for a statement.

Elsewhere, Gordon Waddell of the Sunday Mail sort of deserves a bit of praise for his article today where he points out that the Ibrox support do indeed sing unacceptable songs.

And he complains that asking the clubs to do anything about it, without actually apportioning blame to the one that is most guilty, is pointless.

Gordon Waddell: Notion of clubs helping cops with their enquiries into sectarian singing is laughable

HAPPY New Year, everyone. Here’s to a rip-roaring 1691… Sorry… we’re in 20what? Who knew, eh?

Wow, I wish I’d thought of that 1691 line. Oh, wait…

This extract, however, is spot on, and I’d like to be the first to offer Gordon a substantial discount on new windows…

Anyone who thought we’d left the cesspool of sectarianism behind has sadly been forced to review their optimism settings after the Rangers-Hibs game.

Sure, we’ve had cloth-eared people trying to play it down, saying it never happened and we were duped into hearing what we were apparently
desperate to hear.

We’ve had social media’s always-offended cranking it up at every turn.

And yes, there are guys in the media who refuse to write about it because they don’t see the point.

They’re either culturally inured to it or they don’t think it’ll ever change.

And I bet he’s sitting by himself in the Record canteen from now on as well.

Although he could have put this bit a wee bit better.

The problem, as ever, is what you do about it. When no-one knows what the actual crime is, how is it possible to establish the punishment?

I’ve thought of a word for the crime.

Racism.

Which is illegal anyway.

Happy to help.

The article, to be fair, is probably the first one to not only call out the peepil for their community singing, but also to call out the media for ignoring it, and even ask why they are ignoring it.

That in itself is worthy of recognition., but then unerneath the article there are one or two comments that are, well, bollocks.

Including this belter, which is the fallback option every time that lot disgraces themselves.

” Apartheid schooling and brainwashing young minds ( “give me the child, see the man ..” -Joseph Loyalla RC Jesuit ) (Who ?- Ralph Malph.) as in all forms of religious fundamentalism leads to ignorance , separation, bitterness, hate, and a culture of them and us.

Happily, he has also illustrated where this culture begins. Perhaps unwittingly.

It is not about social inclusion and togetherness but tribalism in its worst form. Stereotypes are frowned upon but so many in society conform to them.

No shit .

Children should be given freedom to choose and not be subject to adult mores. Faith schools need to be strictly regulated ( look at the situation down south with unregulated muslim schools and the hate culure and propaganda they are developing.)

I live in a city with a high Islamic population. There aren’t any faith schools I am aware of, and I’m sure if there was any “situation ” I’d be aware of it .. And those pesky Asians seem to use schools to learn, the same as most people. Except,  presumably , the author of this rant.

And we will see the results of that soon enough.

These schools, and Roman Catholic ones must not be state funded, but politicians will not go near this issue..

Probably because its illegal to deny religious freedom

but ignore it to the detriment of society as a whole. As an atheist I resent that I have had to fund this kind of schooling.

Can I reassure this chap that his few quid in taxes also goes on other things.

Anyway, in a new feature to the Diary, we are going to award him the Fuckwit Of The Week award.

If he gets in touch, he can claim his prize. A t shirt which you can find in the Etims store

and now, the missing words round…

Rangers director Paul Murray: We can raid ***** ********* and turn

******* **** into football fanatics.

Thought the performance yesterday was awful to say the least but as the last 10 mins panned out the celtic fans exploded into song this clearly got a reaction from the players and they fought like mad getting a last minute goal I believe the fans really motivated the players so maybe we should do it more the fans were brilliant last 10 mins and yes the ref was a disgrace celtic board must speak out so come on celtic fans more of what we got last 10 mins you were brilliant H H

Afternoon Ralph…and a Happy New Year.
I’d hoped that 2016 would bring a wee change in your “musings”..but alas,it’s not to be.
The least I expect from any Celtic side is fight…so to get it, doesn’t fill me with chuff..it’s a given..or should be.
The bottom line is..we were awful, again, yesterday and Thistle were a better team than us on the day.
Yes the Ref. was rank rotten…but that’s a given as well…so nowt changes there.
Its the way we play that’s the problem…It’s crap and it’s taking us backwards..and opposition Coaches have us sussed..and have no fear of playing a high pressing game which renders us useless.
This all comes back to RD..and he has to go..the support won’t put up with this rubbish for much longer.
As for Bitton…he should have been sent off before he was…
He put in another “yellow card” tackle which the ref. somehow ignored..just before the “incident” which got him his marching orders. He deserved to walk…the idiot.
Apart from that..all is well at Celtic FC.

Can someone who does not watch the games with green, norweigan tainted glasses ,write the articles, sick of this ridiculous pro ronnie tripe we keep getting,it was partick thistle,we were playing,a team that would be lucky to get a game in english non league football, the ref was crap,3 penalties,a red card that never should have been, thistle committed tackles 10 times worse and bugger all happened, but it should not matter we should be taking 5,6,7 off rubbish at home, don,t think we have had that many shots on target at home over the last 4 home games, the dick head should be sen,t packingright now,he even said that johanssen was getting back to his best,he was his usual awful self yesterday

Have to say Ralph that your support for Ronnie despite so many weaknesses is admirable but to me a bit blind. You are starting to plough a lonely furrow. The guys a shyster but don’t think you will ever see it. There’s none so blind as those who can’t see. But hey ho we all still love Celtic being a broad church indeed.

Cartvale88

Happy new year to one and all.Yesterday was shocking, it was obvious Particks game plan. The referee did Celtic a favour in sending off Biton, obviously he did not intend that as both yellows were soft.
Celtic will win the league, possibly the other two cups, but we are going backward. I watched YouTube and the quality that was Nakamurra, name so one that is of the same quality in our current team.
We have no plan B just the one plan, that will not work In the Europa or the Champions League

ewanbhoy

Another awful performance but at least this time we managed to win.
As I pointed out last week, which was, it is good for the team with Boyata now being out injured ( now Monti I’m not being unfair and welcoming our players getting injured but just stating a fact)as we managed to keep a clean sheet and not lose our now customary 2 goals a game.
Also what most of us know already is that ciftci isn’t good enough and won’t score the goals we need.
Last moan is the lack of drive from midfield, when Brown is out the team we are shockingly weak and lack any purpose about our play.
The answer’s are simply sign an experienced CH, a powerful midfielder and another quality striker.
Ronny really is on thin ground now and Griffiths saved his skin yesterday and if things don’t start to go the right way soon I don’t know how much longer he will survive.
What concerns me is how the team have gone into reverse and can’t seem to go forward again.
We should be improving every week not go backwards.
So for me we need to sign a new spine to our team and from now to the end of the season we must win almost every game left and if we can do that then Ronny might well save his job but if this run of bad form continues then Ronny’s days will be numbered.

The question is what is plan B? Delia goes ( after winning treble ) and then what? Who comes in? DD sells up to whom? And then what? Lawell goes and who comes in? Then what? Where does the extra money come from to fund a team that Martin O’Neil had the luxury of managing? What different financial model would we pursue short of a Russian or Arab billionaire deciding to buy a new toy? Scottish football is a shrinking entity in size and quality and the teams have to adjust accordingly. SFA and SPFL are no help as all their focus is on reviving Sevco which seems to be their answer to everything. What if they just accepted that Sevco is dead and focused their minds on all the other teams and a set up that would produce better quality football players and teams in Scotland. While we argue pointlessly and endlessly on Delia in or out. Our focus should also be on exposing this scandalous focus on reviving Sevco as the answer to Scottish footballs problems- it is in fact the cause of Scottish football’s problems!

BB,
How about a model where we bring in young players, develop them into stars then sell them for huge transfer fees?
Then replace those ‘ stars ‘ with utter shite?

Or how about a model where everything you do is failing in front of our eyes, the team is worse and we need to watch Champions league on t.v., because we won’t be in it again?

Deila is a fucking joke!

I think if we secure the services of decent a CB and Striker in this window and bring back Fisher O’Connell Findlay and Christie we will see an immediate impact on the side.
We have Janko Mulgrew and Brown to come back and if Armstrong Johansen and Mackay Steven find their form (which we all know is temporary as they are all proven decent players)then we can kick on into the summer.
We also have Kelleher Wardrop and Breslin doing well in the Development squad.
That’s a CB RB and a DM .

Stuff. Get used to Ronny being around for a while yet. Ambrose is our best in the air and a better defender (right now) than Boyata. Scottish Cup means we can rest Griffiths for a fortnight. Do some good business this transfer window. At Stranraer, give some of our regulars a rest. Bailly, Allan, Cole, etc can all figure.Get rid of the notion of ‘improvement’. Every year is different, every tournament is different, every opponent changes, is better or worse. Live in the moment, one game at a time. Our team and board should keep the MIBs in line by drawing their attention to some of their ‘bizarre’ behaviour. Lenny did this brilliantly and MON wasn’t far behind. Just remind them that we are watching them. Charlie Saiz, your stats are always welcome. Do you know, off hand, how many penalties have been awarded this year in the league? How many have we had? How many have Aberdeen had? How many have Sevco had?
A 1-0 win in the last minute with 10 men is ‘The Celtic Way’.

If we win the treble playing like this i for one will not be celebrating because it will only show how utterly piss poor aberdeen and the like are and set us up for humiliation in champions league qualification!

When the undead return , if we are still stuttering along in this fashion i fear for us because say what you want but at least warburton seems capable of picking a side which can entertain and win which is more than i can say for the clowns in charge ofus. It is every game now we are rank rotten . Charlie Saiz,
Its hugely important to get the best value for money with the new signings.Supporters would be a bit more patient if we brought in younger Scottish players with talent to provide a team for the near future and to supplement the existing team.
However the board must make the supporters aware of this, one of the critisisems that bugs me is the lack of communications from the Board along with the lack of investment but we should always remember the debt we are due back to the Coop Bank.
Its very clear that the support for the management team is fast eroding, they will determine wether they stay or go.

Thought we played better with 10 men than 11. Commons then came into a central role than than out wide (what’s that all about), that’s how we got the goal. We should be playing a system that gets the best out of the players, not the other way round. Everybody and their dog knows how we’re going to set up our team every week, that can’t be great. If he wants 5 in the middle then why not play a 3-5-2, especially at Celtic park. We’ll all have our opinions that’s mine.

Your two CH and Lustig for the back 3. The two wide players on the 5 have to get up and down, and support in attack (not at the same time) and defence, like the whole team should.
In the current system the full backs get caught out of position, leaving the CB exposed.
As a said that’s my opinion

You play 2 Wingbacks with a 3-5-2 otherwise you become open to attack from the wings.
Lustig and Ambrose are the only 2 fit RB’s we have right now.
Boyata is injured as is Mulgrew.
Now if Mulgrew Boyata and Janko were fit then yes it could be done but they aren’t so it’s not actually an option right now.
Don’t know whether it has escaped your attention but injuries are playing havoc with our Defence at the moment?
Mulgrew Boyata Janko and Brown being out is greatly reducing Deilas options at the moment.
Yet still we have only conceded 16 goals despite losing Denaayer and VVD in the Summer on top of all of the above.

Are you aware how ridiculous it is to post stat after stat in defence of this Fugazi?

Now Now you two, you sound like me and my misses,
Charlie Saiz, I will be astounded if this Management Team are still in situ. at the start of next season,my money would be on Keane(not my choice)or M O Neil (more likely)being in place next year.
Interesting that Johanson hasnt been offered a new contract yet and the young Falkirk centreback is being looked at.
This is the way forward young strong British players with the emphises on Scottish.
