Celtic Diary Sunday December 27: Which Celtic Will turn Up ?

Thats the question on everyones lips this morning, along with “Who drank all the bloody vodka ? ” as the world returns to normal after the annual binge to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

I got to cook Christmas dinner this year, but the general agreement was that as it smelt better on the way out I’ll not be doing it again.

Celtic face Hearts this afternoon, and despite the best efforts of piss poor referee Willie Collum, the hoops can go three clear and a game in hand as Aberdeen could only draw with Inverness yesterday.

It took another of Collums late interventions to get that result, when he s[potted an infringement in the box late on to give the dons a chance to salvage something from the game.

The whistler has a habit of what could be called having an influence on results, and it makes me wonder if it’s not worth seeing what betting sites he’s using, I’m not saying he’s in the slightest bit corrupt, but if I was him I’d rather be remembered as trying to make a few quid on the side as opposed to being completely incompetent and an irritating, nauseous wee shite to boot.

Anyway, Ronny Deila can now concentrate on playing his strongest side with the players all in their best positions as the run in ti the silverware begins.

Can’t he ?

And who knows ? We might even get a Ronny roar today, instead of the usual roars at Ronny, which seem to always end in the word “off”.

The Norwegian said :

Will I do the Ronny Roar again? We’ll see, you never know. Would I come out of Tynecastle again if I did it there though?

“I haven’t felt it was right for it lately. There hasn’t been enough to have a Ronny Roar. But it will come back. Things must turn round and that’s what we want to do. The festive season could be the time to do it.

“Is it dependant on the team playing well? You have to be satisfied yourself with what you’re doing. If you’re standing in front of supporters you have to feel ‘this is fantastic’ and good about where we are going.

“Everybody agrees there are things that can be better and we’re working really hard to get on the right track again.

“It would depend how I feel in the match and what situation we are in. There will be a time and a place.

“We’ve had good performances and not so good performances. Overall, everybody knows we’re not happy about not going through in Europe. That’s the main thing.

“I love winning and whoever we play against just to win is a fantastic feeling. So it will come back and we have so much to play for. I’m looking forward to that.”

Would he come out of Tynecastle alive if he did ?

Over celebration at the Edinburgh stadium doesn’t seem to bother Leigh Griffiths, as if you recall he always likes to show his feelings after scoring, even on the way home afterwards;

hopefully Griffiths will be fit today, as the jury seems to have already decided on the two back up strikers Carlton Cole and Nadir Ciftci.

Whilst both are powerful and easy to find with a high ball, they aren’t quick enough to take advantage, so plan b , as it were, isn’t really much of a plan at all.

Unless you can think of a word beginning with b to give it a full title.

Back when Alex Fergusons Manchester United could call a draw with Norwich, Stoke or Bournemouth a shock result, actually, to be honest, it still would be a shock result, the dour Scots side never really used to kick in until after christmas, as he used the previous months to get some of his younger players up to speed with the demands of first team football.

Perhaps this is the case at Celtic these days, and if it isn’t , then I’m flat out of excuses for Ronny, and if we keep playing like we’ve had our heart and soul surgically removed, then he’s on his own.

So today, the players need to prove they’ve got the balls to play for Celtic, and there is no better place to prove that than at Tynecastle.

The small ground is deigned in such a way that the support is steeply stacked and close to the players. As far as atmospheres go, it can get a bit lively.

And they’re not a bad side either, if a little enthusiastic;

“Hearts are a physical team. We have to stand up to everything. But it is about playing quickly enough, moving the ball and giving them problems.

“We have met them in every cup and we have beaten them.

“We also had a draw with them at home in a game we should have won. So we have done well against Hearts and I am looking for another good performance.

“Their team spirit is excellent. They have two strikers who are strong, can hold up the ball and fight.

“They have a couple of wingers who are quite skilful and can cause problems. They also don’t concede many goals against any team and that is a positive.

“Hearts are a big club who had some troubles in the past but they’ve built up a new team again.

“They play good football. From what I saw last season they were a top-six team but they’re top four so they’ve done even better.

“Tynecastle has one of the best atmospheres in the division and it’s going to be a huge game.

“I’ve been twice with Celtic, getting two victories, and we’ll do everything we can to get a third.”

The words of Ronny deila there, and surely I can’t be the only one who has noticed that Celtic’s management are either full of praise for opponents, are a little disparaging, prompting criticism from the fans.

As i’m not sure who the PR guy is for the club, I cannot really criticise him, except to say that if we don’t know who he is, then perhaps he could be doing a little bit more than he is at the moment.

In the meantime, perhaps I could offer my own services, with this template to be filled in before all away games.

“We are looking forward to the visit to ( fill in as applicable ) , We always find that ( Fill in as applicable ) will try to maim as many of our players as possible until the referee remebers that he is on camera and should probably book one or two to make the statistics look good.  Then theres the fans, a more ignorant bigoted set of tossers spilling their bile for a couple of hours you couldn’t hope to meet. . Still, its better than being abused by our own fans at Celtic Park “

At least it would be honest.

If Deila does go with his strongest available eleven, Gordon, Lustig, Simunovic, Boyata, Tierney, Johansen, MacGregor, Armstrong, Commons, Forrest , Griffiths.

I’ve included Commons for Rogic because the Aussie Ardiles seems hell bent on scoring a solo goal to rival Ricky Villa’s English cup final effort but until he learns to run around defenders instead of in to the biggest crowd of them he can find, that isn’t going to happen.

And anyway, he would make a better impact sub in a game like this.

Boyata , despite the occasional howler still needs time to learn to work alongside Simunovic, although it was a close call to elect to play him, as Efe Ambrose would make me feel a little more comfortable with the back line.

All we need is a professional , hard working performance with a wee bit of fight and a wee bit of heart.

I’ve had enough shocks this Christmas as it is.

I’ll be watching the game on television, and remember, if you are too, not everything you see can be completely trusted

Embedded image permalink

Anyway, I’ve to pop out now, it’s been raining a bit in these parts, and I don’t want to miss the ferry to the Co-op.

but before i go, best wishes, thoughts and prayers are with Celtic author/historian Tom Campbell, who is undergoing heart surgery in Canada today.

From all of us to you Tom, all the best, and let us know how you get on as soon as you can.

You invite Celtic’s biggest enemy, Peter T FUcking Lawwell to continue. I FUCKING DON’T.

Johansen was the best player in Scotland last year by a country mile his lack of form and fitness along with Browns lack of form and fitness has been a key element as to why we have not had as much energy and urgency in games this Season if fit and on form he should start IMO.
Armstrong has had as poor s start to this Season as Johansen yet for whatever reason he escapes the same level of scrutiny.
I suspect like Brown when he’s 100% he will be back with a renewed energy having had a wee rest?

Charlie Saiz,
I don’t agree with you that Armstrong escapes the same scrutiny as Johansen, I just feel that Johansen’s drop off in form and performance is more obvious because of his previous seasons efforts.
I believe both players have been carrying knocks which would explain a lot.

Is anyone else slightly concerned about the possibility of GMS and Janko going out on loan?
I would have wanted them on form and in the team.

Charlie Saiz

There is no proof either are going out on loan as of yet usual paper talk before the window.
Johansen get’s way more stick than Armstrong from fans he’s the new Sammy in that respect.

Monti

Johansen’s getting stick because he has been shite, play well and you don’t get stick.
It’s a fickle game.

For example, I want Deila to go because he can’t get us results in Europe, If he got us results in Europe, I’d want him to stay.

Quite simple really!

Morning Ralph,
Hope you and your family had a good Christmas.

I expect to win today, the performance is important but as long as we leave there with three points, that’ll do me.
As for ‘the Ronny Roar’? Until he has a very strong Celtic side consistently performing and winning, he should leave it out.

If Forrest is going to continue to play then he has to be told to get to the line and cut the ball back or across the box into the defenders and attackers . This nonsense of constantly cutting inside and losing the ball or hitting shots into the goalkeeper has to stop .He is part of a team he has the pace and the ability to get to the byline and stretch the defenders all he needs to concentrate on is finding a green jersey or hitting the ball with pace which my deflect off an incoming defender. He cost. Us that game today with a stupid attempt to make it look like he was challenging for the ball when he was nowhere near it,.if he can’t do the basic wingers job then get rid because he brings nothing else to the team. Sorry I have had enough of Forrest unless he can bring something else to his game which adds value to the team.☘☘☘

Thought it good entertainment myself forrest dumb foul . But unstoppable free kick some you have to pay. Better spirit. I cant understand taking goal scorers off in a tight game when they are in the zone. My only criticidm is not getting enough of the ball to ciftci who was left stranded.

Disappointed not to have won today but I thought those who played all did a decent job today.
Well played to Efe as well, he played well when he came on.

Well Rallph,
I am sure U will do your usual and pump out the positives of today,s performance as we know you are as loyal as hell to Dummy Deila.
For me there were a couple of pluses. Rogic & Biton playing well and scoring and again no Ronny Roar to witness which was good.
The negatives Ralph were the abject performances of the likes of Lustig,Ciftci and Johansen. But the main thing to note is that the man who has inflicted so much misery on all Celtic supporters over the last 18 months is still in charge of our great club.

I enjoyed the game a good advert for the game I thought and a draw in the end probably the right result.
Plenty negativity flying about online of course going to ignore it myself the sense of entitlement in some is almost palpable now.
I was prying for Efe to score today just to get it ruar the minis he played well considering the little game time he’s had.

Agree with Monti(and Ronnie) good attitude from themwhole team, stupid foul from Jamsie, only the spin of GMS fooled Gordon. Goals were classy but don’t understand why Cole is not getting a run, what is the purpose of signing him, tearing him but not playing him. Ciffti is just not making an impact.
Always feel the team is better balanced and more effective when Armstrong plays, the first 20 minutes were terrific but Hearts came into it and shouldn’t have been allowed to. I thought we coped with the physical side of Hearts quite well too. Plenty of effort from all but need Griffiths back and SB.

James Forrest is an exceptional talent when he is fit and on his game, he gave away a free kick today, so what?
The ball flew into the top corner, you can’t save those.
What is Forrest supposed to do, let the opposition player run through?

Dan The Man

He will be an exceptional talent until he is 40 Monti but if he plays like he did today he is useless to the team he did not just give away a free kick it was in a dangerous position and was unnecessary and it cost us 2 points .What if we lose the league by 2 points come May ? If I just want to see someone who can manipulate a football I will watch Soccer AM he needs to contribute more to the result at the right end of the park .If his talent can be harnessed fine he might yet become a decent Celtic player if not then get rid and use the wages to bring someone who will be more effective into the team. And what if he had not given away the pointless free kick? 3 points in the bag. He did not contribute enough to the game either. It is as plain as the nose on your face. Forrest has talent my frustration is that he is not using it fully to benefit the team. Other players in the team do not get the leeway that Forrest gets if Effe or Boyata had given that free kick away they would have been castigated but Jamsie is free from criticism for some reason . He is not an inexperienced young player anymore he needs to give more on a consistent basis and he needs to improve his final ball and draw more penalties from the opposition. I drink my fair share of wine and alcohol for social purposes but what has that got to do with the price of fish in this debate.? ☘☘☘

Monti spot on! the only comment i’ve read getting it correct regarding Forrest, I actually thought he did well when he came on taking players on, ok his final ball leaves a lot to be desired but we should be backing him instead of lambasting him and other players.to me I think some people on here almost want certain players to have a bad game to have a go at them.

Forrest contributes 1 game in ten he is not consistent enough and the most important part of his game should be his final ball but he either picks the wrong ball or goes for glory.. He should be instructed to get to the bye line and cut it back that is his main job but he does not do enough of it. He also has the talent to get us more penalties but he very seldom gets into the box . This cut across the 18 yard line and shooting makes him a one trick pony.. He is not contributing enough.☘☘☘

The human body can only tolerate so much. When I watch some of our players walk and run off the ball it is terrible to watch (James with his arms flailing). I am no expert, but, having blown my knee out twice and having learned to run again on both occasions. I have watched video after video of Olympic runners have their running style dissected. What we are seeing out there must make the sports department at Bristol University cry. Someone we are paying is using science in only a half assed way. That is why our player’s muscle memory is all over the shop and there is only limited consistency.

I agree with Monti and Charlie Saiz. I have said many times that we need a technical coach in there that can teach our players from the start how to cross with their weaker foot and it would handy if he could teach those same players to shoot no matter what chance they have. Well done lads.

If we need to teach them to cross and to shoot we need to teach them to tackle and win the ball or hold back
if their opponent is in a threatening position.
Always were coached to kicky if the opponent was in a position where a free kick was more likely to score than not, that said Forest did OK, it is good he tackled back now, he didn’t used to, drove Lennon wild (wilder probably) but he is a more experienced player and Ronnie seems to have got his fitness regime right.
All in all not a bad result in a difficult place, I think Ronnie maybe right in saying “his team” is back, hope so.

Sorry jocky not kicky!

So its Forrest’s turn to shield the blame of another poor performance. He made a poor tackle but if the ref doesn’t spot it he has had a good game? If the ref had gave a penalty when Cifti pushed the guy would he be getting the blame?

We gave away six free kicks in the last ten minutes but lets all blame Forrest. We sat back so deep we had our wingers, hardly known for defensive qualities, defending the edge of the box and put ourselves under pressure with no ‘out’ ball to give us breathing space.

Efe had a good game, won his tackles, completed his passes and won every header except one at the halfway line. He completely negated any threat Gomis posed. My MOTM was Gordon, good distribution and two top drawer saves, one of them world class, that really kept us in the game.

Overall, pretty poor performance, you would struggle to tell which team were champions and which was in a lower league last season.

Doc, I posted on Christmas Eve and it disappeared. The next time I logged on there it was! 🙂 It could be elvs rather than gremlins

Don’t know what game Charlie Siaz was watching regarding our plastic hard nut Stefan I didn’t even know he was playing until he done something daft in and around the 40 minute mark. If ron thinks a draw is excellent from his team well he has to go this is getting worse by the week, insipid, lacklustre and a totally rotten attitude from coaching staff and the players.

Una,
Then I suggest you watch the game over again, Charlie Saiz is right enough about Johansen.
Maybe if we get behind the players they will perform better?

Just watching part two of the excellent BBC whodunit ‘ And then there were none ‘…..I know who done it, it was James Forrest 🙂

James is also responsible for all the flooding and the hurricane in America.

Jeez.

If it wasn’t Charles Dance I’ll be very surprised. He’s the biggest Baddest baddy ever.

No spoilers please.

PS I think the fenian guy is ok.

Monti, I just got your most recent (ETims) version of what REALLY happens/happened with Celtic. James is often culpable: his idiotic choice of kicking someone’s shins on the edge of the box cost us today. He’s never come anywhere close to delivering a 90 minute display. If I remember correctly, you’ve often slagged off Kris Commons. Have a wee word wi’ yersel’.
James has been at CP a lot longer than Kris.
No contest who’s made the most impact.

Happy New Year to you and all Tims worldwide.
Vinnie.

I seem to remember Jamesie and Sammy carrying Celtic for about 6 weeks in Lennys first Season as wee were ravaged by injuries early on he was excellent played on the left wing mostly.
Unfortunately he was out for months after and never really fully found that form again.
I agree though he’s not reaching the next level in Development and seldom has a decent final ball?
Might be better being re branded as a striker and see how he get’s on with his pace he might just bag a few?

Una,

U are right. Johansen running around like a headless chicken. A liability to the team. I think you should watch match again Monti. Johansen was lucky not to be sent off today. Brings nothing to the midfield this year.

Jamesy Forrest played out of position today, one of a number of players including Ciftci who never played at Dundee utd as an out and out striker. Maybe if he had someone up beside him?

He started out on the left under Lenny I am fairly sure?
Can play on either side comfortably though I prefer him on the right.

It is not that Forrest plagued out of position that bugs us he goes past players no issue on either side. Difference is on the right he will provide a decent ball on the left he will not. I believe Shifty should play behind Rogic when Griff is not available or someone else should. I see elements of a promising Center Forward in Rogic.

Can’t believe the amount of posters who are happy to have seen a good match, but OK with two points being dropped to a team that hadn’t won in their last four league games. If Ronnie doesn’t get” the bullet” soon, I can see us chucking the league away, no one has any fear of us anymore!!
