Celtic Diary Monday November 30: Life Is Full Of Surprises

Not just in football either.

Remember that funeral I was at last week ?

It was a friend of the wifes, so I didn’t really know him, but went along because thats the sort of thing you do as a couple. Anyhow. The fellows kids were talking about what they’d been left. One said he’d got two blocks of flats near the city centre, another said he’d got a load of small businesses and the third son proudly announced he’d got all the bungalows.

I said to the wife, “Bloody hell, how much money did this guy have ? He must have been loaded. ” and yes, I was beginning to regret not paying more attention to her friends. Well this one , at least.

She replied ” Loaded ? Was he fuck. He was a window cleaner. ”

Yesterday though, provided an even bigger surprise.

Not that Celtic won 3-1.

Not that the side looked a little more composed and relaxed. Possibly because the pressure of succeeding in Europe had been lifted, a pressure which must be unbearable at times, given that some sections of the media, upset that their own favourites overseas jaunts are confied to a couple of trips to Berwick, have decided that domestic trophies don’t count anymore and Europe is where it’s at.

Come to think of it, their favourite won’t be winning any major domestic trophies either, another reason why they are being downgraded.

Not even that Calum McGregor scored early on again, like he does.

Lets hope he can stay away from the inevitable injury until at least Scott Brown comes back, but then again, thats perhaps unfair as McGregor is picking up where he left of, much to the alarm of Kris Commons.

No, the biggest surprise of all was that I could see immediately the difference that Carlton Cole will make.

And it’s so simple, and it’s even been done before, that I can’t understand why we all missed it.

And the thinking behind it.

Arguably one of the problems we have had this season is a lack of quality balls into the box, combined with a lack of height and strength to take full advantage.

A few years ago, Shunsuke Nakamura, no mean striker of the ball himself, admitted that his job was made an awful lot easier by having a big ginger haired Welshman to aim at. Nakamura said that in the heat of the moment, John Hartson was easy to spot in a split second, and easier to hit than any of his other team mates.

That could also be the case with Cole. He’s a big black lad, and he is easy to pick out in a crowd.

Thus anyone who looks up for just a second will spot him instantly, and can aim the ball at him, as opposed to aiming a ball to where they think there might be a forward.

If Deila opts to use him, with Griffiths in a withdrawn role as one of the three support players, then you may find that although not a conventional 4-4-2, we will have solved this issue of not creating and converting as many chances as we should.

The player also made himself likeable to the support when he told cameras after the game ” I ain’t claiming that one ” after he did a Bobo on the defenders, causing them to panic and hide the ball in the net where he couldn’t get it.

Time will tell, but there seems to be a bit pof promise there, and thats what i mean by surprises.

I though he’d be a diddy.

Speaking of diddies. See when you’re getting picked up early to go to the game, and you’ve been out the night before ? Get someone to check youve dressed yourself properly.

Hundreds of supporters made their way north yesterday, and given the adverse conditions , deserve applause for their efforts.

Thats what supporters do, they support.

Early on in the day, there were complaints that supporters buses were being stopped and searched by police, who were on the lookout for alcohol, presumably because it was sunday and all the off licences were shut.

Adverse weather, long trips, early starts and late finishes. Yet the police add to their woes with unnecessary stop and searches.

After police were criticised for their absence during the trouble in the Gallowgate on Thursday, they seemed to be right on the ball yesterday.

Perhaps next time , the support will place Ajax flags in the back window, and drape a few scarves out the side.

Her majestys finest came under criticism for their lack of presence during  Thursdays events, which saw the owner of the Hoops bar hospitalised with some nasty injuries. The press, with the honourable exception of the Irish Post, have largely ignored this issue, but thats not surprising. And the police ? Well, we hear they were only acting under orders on Thursday night, and we’ve seen a copy of them;

I’m making light of something serious here, which is  not my intention, and Police Scotland should be called to task over this. The club have security people.

Why are they not demanding answers ?

Why is someone not being held responsible for their poor showing on Thursday, and their over zealous approach yesterday ?

And why are Police allowed to hide their faces these days, and yet demand that supporters show theirs ?

If they are caught on camera misbehaving, won’t that make it more difficult to hold them to account ? Embedded image permalink

From now on, I’m going to the game on my bike. That’ll teach these coppers.

Away from that, because something else annoyed me a wee bit yesterday.

Buzzing to be brought all the way up to inverness with the team to sit in the stands today, lovely weather for it too…

Perhaps a little more than it should, this really got under my skin.

Stokes isn’t in the team right now. Fair enough, he might be a little frustrated by that. As he tweeted this, yesterday morning , hundreds of fans were heading north in that “lovely weather ” so they , too, can “sit in the stands“.

And guess what, they had to pay their own way, and none of them will see their bank accounts increased by several thousand pounds this month.

Manager Ronny Deila has said he will speak to Stokes about the tweet, the player admittedly apologised later on, but again it shows the detachment between players and supporters.

Anyway, lets see how Deila handles it, we hear he’s planned a meeting with Stokes later today. Embedded image permalink

Congratulations to Andy Murray and his brother Jamie who helped to win the bat and ball Davis Cup for Britain yesterday, the first time the trophy has been won  since 1936, which , by a remarkable coincidence, was the last time anyone gave a toss.

And now, a caption competition… which is not an analogy for events at Ibrox….

Great diary Ralph, I could not bare to watch any of that Davis ( Diddy Cup) crap…. as it looked like the knuckle dragsters taking any opportunity to promote their cespit of a club…….and besides the Murray clan have a soft spot for them so I don’t support Judy and her sons, that’s me though and I’m proud of my stance!!
Stokes is his own worst enemy, for a man of his age…immature and childish antics all the time, no room for that at the club.

Celtic always 1st….

poor performance yesterday but 3 points is all that mattered.
confidence is low so hopefully we will get back up to speed soon.
i am still going to give Ronny till the CL qualifiers next season to prove himself but there is one player who i think is no good and costing us goals, points and games and that is Boyata……he is too soft, cant attack a ball, cant pass and cant read a game…..you can see why no team down south played him….because he is shite.

You could say the same about Armstrong. He’s absolutely crap at the moment. Maybe he is out of position but for me, he doesn’t look in the slightest bit interested.

Confidence is low because the squad know they have a manager who is completely out of his depth.

i would say confidence is low because our players know that we lose goals easily…..sort the defence and the confidence will grow……sign an experienced center half in January and drop Boyata for starters…

We beat Malmö 6 games ago, and Qarabag 8 games ago, and were very close to beating Ajax twice and Fenerbace. The way I see it, bar the defensive mistakes/unsettled defence and the heads dropping we very well could have been in the champions league or have 10 plus points in the Europa League.

Yeah, I think Ronny has got it wrong on occasion but I’m up for giving him another 3 seasons before making a final judgement on him. Maybe it’s all the magic mushrooms I’ve been taking, but I’m really excited about the future of the club.

K-Dhogg,
You are really excited about the future?

Tell me, is it the sound defending you see that is exciting you, or the controlling, skillful, incisive passing maybe? Or maybe it’s our great strikers who have you drooling, which one is it?

Sorry Ralph can’t agree with you on team looked more composed and relaxed the passing was poor first touch poor at times and as I have said before do we have a celtic player who can win a 50 50 ball except kt and a distinct lack ofcommitment from some players all in all we won 3 1 and deserved to win just but not good to watch not good at all

Agree with ewanbhoy, boyota is a nightmare and that was very amateur defending for the ICT goal.

Reply to  corktim

I agree with the points about Boyata, however it was Armstrong that took the heavy touch initially, followed by Johansens tip toe type tackle that allowed the player to skip through towards the defence.
What should have happened next, was Boyata hit the guy with everything he had with Simunovic sweeping up, or vice versa.
Neither did anything.

Montis right about Armstrong his touch was out and he was off the pace untill he was subbed,Boyatas first instinct should have been to bring him down before the box, mind you he should have been on the right side of him first. Our defence still seems weak Tierny aside and we should never have let Ledley leave, our midfield still looks fradgile,it sickens me when i think of the money we have sqandered on guff players like Derk whoever signed him needs sacked.

Ralph,
Glad you highlighted the violence from Ajax Hooligans on Thursday night.
Am I the only one who thinks there is something extremely sinister, in the lack of Police presence on the Gallowgate an hour before kick off.
These thugs would have been in the City most of the day and must surely have been under surveillance?
Very, very odd!

like it or not but Ronny will be given another shot at it and i am willing to show my support and see what happens. i have my doubts but at the same time i think if we can sign the right players for certain positions and get our defence sorted then i do think he can get it right.
so ok reason 1- his passion and commitment to Celtic
2- coaching skills and player development(youth players too)
3- he can win domestically and will hopefully win the treble this year
4- to prove a point and stick 2 fingers up at the media
5- he is young and hungry and will (hopefully) learn how to win in europe.
6- he hates the huns
7- well he is a nice guy

Don’t know why the Europe bashing is going on, last years Europa League run (I felt we under-performed) netted us €3.9 million, excluding TV money where as a domestic treble would net us £2.9 million, including TV money. A win against Malmo would have brought in more money than seven trebles, I know which is easier to acheive.

Folk keep saying how if the team sticks together then everything will be alright but this is just not realistic. We have a £14 million overdraft to be paid and are currently operating at a loss, we either have to do well in Europe or sell a number of players per season because will winning treble from now until doomsday will not put a dent in our current operating costs. If domestic prize money is all we chase then we need huge cuts or a huge increase in ticket prices. I keep hearing that Deila will bring through players from the youth setup, soon this won’t be a choice, it will be imposed on us.

I hear a lot of folk wanting Celtic in the EPL as thats where the money is but we already have access to Europe, where the money dwarves that of the SPFL. It may not have EPL money but we don’t have to pay EPL ticket money to watch. We have missed out on £43 million CL money the last two seasons but its supposedly okay as we came out on top of the SPFL, whilst paying three times the wages of our nearest competitor. We reap what we sow and if if the SPFL is all we want then we must cut our cloth to SPFL levels.

You can’t base your projections on what might be regarding European Competition that would be foolish.
However we do need to speculate more when it comes to buying talent in key positions I feel.
We should have spent £5m on a solid and proven CB rathe than on Simunovic.
We should have speculated on spending the £6m on Finnbogason when the opportunity to do so presented itself as we have wasted more than that in duds since.
The reason we haven’t is the Board have been playing the Debt Free Card for 4 years well as you rightly point out we do owe the Co-op £14m still and that needs clearing by 2019.
My suggestion would be a new share issue to get rid of those who sit on Large shares then have fan ownership.
Once that is secured then have a Marquee Fund for the type of player ALL teams who wish to compete in Europe have that we at the moment simply don’t.
We have to produce our own Doc we are not in a position to simply buy our way out of the situation we are in.
ie a poorly run and funded League.
I suggest we spend 3 years building a squad that will see us good for 5-10 years.
Tierney Henderson McGregor Lindsay Findlay O’Connell and now wee Miller who’s nearing selection are our future and I for one am looking forward to seeing them play.
You can stick you 2 season badge kissing mercenaries up your shite box Celtic.

Reply to  mike

Cheers Mike Celtic fans should be excited about the prospect of multiple young talented players hitting our squad it’s been many years since we have been able to see this at Celtic.
We have to be more patient I feel quick fixes seldom solve the issue at hand.
At some point we are going to fail to land a Wanyama or Van Dijk to bail the Bank Balance out.
This Season could be the one.
European Football is not a given even if you do spend big it only increases the likelihood of doing so.
But a couple of injuries or suspensions can counter this at any given time.

Doc

Reply to  Charlie Saiz

I agree that we should have speculated with the players you mention and I’m happy that your on board with amending your player fund suggestion to fan ownership.

We would all like a settled squad that’s come through the youth setup but in a few years we will need to come up with a lot of cash, as you point out. It’s highly likely that to do this we’ll have to sell players. Its disappointing to see us playing bad and its depressing to see us getting beaten by Malmo, Molde, etc but if I have to watch players like Forest or Tierney being sold from under us then it will be an utter sickener.

European money ensures that we can pay the overdraft, don’t have to sell players that want to stay or even keep the guys that want to go, ‘mercenaries’ as you say, for a season or two longer.

As an aside, I thought the overdraft was due in 2017, is it definitely 2019 or have we got an extension?

We renegotiated the Loan last year Doc it’sin the Accounts mostly in part due to the state the Co-Op was in I think we settled on an extended period.
On the first page of the 2014 Inerim Results

The Annual Report 2015 it say’s:
NON CURRENT LIABILITIES (PAGE 12)

The Section in Green is on page 13 bud under BANK FASCILITIES.
“BANK FACILITIES
The banking facilities of the Group and Company for the year end 30 June 2015 are described in notes 24 and 29.
The lending agreement with the Co-operative Bank, effective as of 30 August 2014, has an initial combined borrowing facility of £20.40m
which consists of a £6.00m revolving credit facility and £14.40m in long term loans.
The revolving credit facility bears interest at base rate plus 1.00% and will reduce by £0.50m in year one and a further £0.50m in year two.
The facility will be repaid or reviewed after three years.
The long term loans will bear interest at London Inter-Bank Offered Rate plus 1.125%. The loans are floating rate loans and therefore expose the Group to cash flow risk.
The loans are repayable in equal
quarterly instalments of £0.05m from the commencement date until full repayment of £12.40m in July 2019. The Group has the option to
repay the loans earlier than these dates without penalty.
At 30 June 2015, the available borrowing on the long term loans is £14.1m.
The borrowing facility is secured over Celtic Park, land adjoining the
stadium and at Westhorn and Lennoxtown.

fair point, but I don’t see much talent in the SPFL … The three from United if regarded as the best option are no great improvement to what was already available.

Yes spend big to fill key position, gaps in the team it’s that simple!!! all can see the weak positions in the team which are still weak and have been for several years.

I fear for the future.

the issue here is that whatever peopke say Celtic is a business as much as the local shop. I people stop coming irrespective of loyalty the business fails. If the business trades up without a plan on how to increase revenue, then you only have to look to the south sde of Glasgow.
The problem recently is not the lack of investment, but the waste of investment.
we have had Balde, Boerigter, Pukke, Scepovic, currently Ciftci, add up the money.
Celtic have been lucky that Soton have invested thirty plus million in buying players, but this cannot go on,
we require a management team an a board that realise success on the park leads to more money in he coffers and alsoleads to players being purchased.
look at the amount of youth team players now plying their trade elsewhere, som of them with correct coaching could have come good.
the plan is currently broken and requires an overhaul, the current management team are poor.

The reality of the situation is this Celtic is controlled by people who have little interest in Football.
They are money men first and foremost moneymen who happen to have a soft spot for Celtic.
If you want things to change then you have to change things yourself.
Fan ownership and a Marquee player fund I think would keep most if not all of our supporters happy.
Buy them out and run the Club as a Club not a money making exercise for a few whilst the majority suffer.
Zero profit making Club with a strong Charitble ethos.
Look afte the Supporters first and foremost
Keep a strong team on the Park
Make the side competitive in Europe whilst maintaining realistic levels of spending.
Umpteen times I have said this IT’S ONLY A MATTER OF NUMBERS.
We get enough numbers wanting and giving to it it then becomes affordable for all.
£67m to buy Celtic outright right now.
We could keep those men who have a genuine interest in the club on pay them a wage n line with the Ethos.
Would Lawwell want to be invovlved? I would hope so.
Nomore Bonus Culture or Divid end chasers straight forwar £20 each in shares 1 vote each at AGM’s.
Interested?
Then let’s get it on folks.
No?
Stop moaning and expect more of the same cause nothing is changing any time soon.

I seem to remember when Klopp joined Liverpool him saying he needs four years before delivering the premier league in England. People can moan all they like about the Tic not performing in Europe and they have every right to do so but the position is not going to change as regards Deila. He has started his job, is not long into it and is going to be given time. In football I’m afraid that is not what managers get and it does a club no good to chop and change all the time. We are just going to have to wait and see how things go.

The board has no plan, just a basic keep things turning over. To placate the fans bring in the odd big name for a short period, the Keanes etc;
I agree with delbhoy, we should only bring in quality to add to the strength of the youth team. We need a quality leader on the pitch, as well as a management team that has goals, not false hope.
The football team is big enough and ugly enough to meter the Champions League on a regular basis, falure to do this relegates Celtic to the lower league of achievers.
In relation to a fans ownership I totally agree as a shareholder, however we have to look at reality.
The fans are taken for mugs, look at the tat in th Superstore, the crapp catering, the lack of pre match entertainment, Hoopy the Huddle whatever acknowledging the kids, small minded crap.
The club the fans are bigger and better than the dross currently foisted on them, both on and off the field. I only have to look back to the shareholders meeting to note a non football individual berate the fans.
Now we are out of Europe we should continue to follow but show our anger by boycotting the retail sector for three months, it will soon be noted.

This report on the game was done while wearing rose tinted glasses, was at the game we were poor, scored early goal, then stopped playing and let them score a terrible goal.long ball over the top caused panic ,not for the first time, then Gordon pushes the ball softly right into the striker to score, favourites like Gordon and Johansen need dropping,
Collum as usual was appalling, only Biton was booked ,despite some bad tackles by the highland huns, the off the ball foul on lustig in the first few minutes was at least a yellow, and probably a red.
The most worrying thing of the afternoon was the filming of the celtic support for absolutely no reason ,by Sturgeons fascist pigs, many hiding their faces, are we the only fans being treated like this,is the club going to question why this is happening,we are not criminals, and should not have to put up with this in a free country.

There seems to be some activists who want to boycott our own club? That is just plain daft. While we are all moaning and groaning about lack of investment, we propose boycotting our own merchandise or games? Get real, unless more of us buy shares and press through our ownership a boycott of anything hurts only our own club and makes us a dodgy proposition for any sugar daddy billionaire in waiting out there. May even chase DD off and then it’s a lottery as to who buys up the shares. Lets assume Dermot has enough and puts his shares up for purchase, let’s assume Lawell resigns, let’s assume before he does he sacks Delia – then what? Who comes in to “own” the club, who comes in to run it? Which high class CL chasing manager is attracted to Glasgow? How will they conjure up extra revenues to fund long runs into CL knockout stages? Oh wait we are playing in the SPFL in a second class league with only relatively few full time teams, able to command small TV deals cause no one else except us watch Svottish football. So what business model would we employ to become the European Giants we once were? These are real questions if we want wholesale change. Or is the buy and grow young talent eventually selling it on the only model that can keep us as financially able as we are today?

I don’t think anyone is disagreeing with rearing our own and it should always be the case. Celtic spend vast amounts on the youth set up as it is. It’s the guy who is trying to implement it and that’s the problem with a lot of guys, they simply have no faith in Deila.

Agree with Deadhead. How can Police be allowed to cover their faces and film the away support. That is a serious concern in a free society.

BB,
Have you seen some of the coupons on the polis?
I think it’s a good idea for them to hide their faces!

It’s the covering their faces that rankles.

Another soft ball article in the Scotsman about SEVCO and adding the Petrovac Training Cup to their considerable haul of honors or words to that effect. I was under the impression that they have won two minor league titles, were runners up in the championship and were beaten finalist in the same cup as mentioned. I am unaware of any honors prior to this time as this club in Govan was formed in 2012. If anyone at the Scotsman can inform me about the other honors I have missed please respond here thanks

They did raise 22 million in a share issue and lost it somehow. In fact they went thru 68 million in 18 months, that’s got to be some sort of record.

Evening Monti
Aye their appealing against HMRC in the supreme court, without their brothers in high places they’ll lose, and blow their same club lie to pieces, should be fun listening to them, the press and the SFA crawl out of that one.

Charlie, you say we should have spent £5m on a proven centre back rather than simonovic. If, as claimed, he cost us £5m surely a proven centre back would have been much more expensive?

Also, do we know for sure we didnt try and sign finboggason? While i have my doubts the board would have splashed £6m on him, i also have my doubts he would come play in scotland. Every year we hear of players who refuse to play in scotland, or who want 20% more in wages just to play in our backwater country than they’d get elsewhere. As i said, i doubt v much if we did try and sign him, but would we have taken him at a huge weekly cost?

Finnbogason was on a reported £12.5k a week at Heerenveen when we passed up on him.
I think Lawwell baulked at the £6m.
Balde Boerrigter and Scepovic cost us more in real terms.

As far as being filmed by the police is concerned everybody in the area should cover their faces and give them the finger.lets see their reaction then.by the way is there any law to prevent fans from having their faces covered at all times at the game,it is winter after all.if you’re not a terrorist that is.HH

Charlie Saiz,
The player fund idea you had is one that you know I like and would support, however what actual physical effort have you went to in order to get things moving?
I know you communicated with Lawwell, but if you are wanting to develop your idea, what are you doing about it?
Have you read up on the legal side of things and source referenced it’s viability?

Genuinely interested to see if it could take off….

My though has always been it should be a Club run and maintained thing.
I know this would put some off initally but the fact of the matter is the Club already has the mechanisms in place to do it.
They have the legal experts, accountants and infrastructure in place.
So long as assurances were given that any such Fund (if it were feasible)would be run as we all agreed.
ie that money was to be used for the purchase of ready made ,quality signings that the Club could not otherwise afford.
I think I may well contact him again about this as it has become apparent there are limitations with the new approach.
Who knows he may be more receptive knowing there is unease among the wider support about where we are headed?

“Detatchment between players and supporters”.
I would say there was more detatchment between the manager and the players.
