Celtic Diary Saturday November 28: So, What now ?

Need to make something clear, yesterdays diary was a genuine reflection of how I think things stand at the moment with Celtic. It wasn’t an effort to find out how everyone else thinks, thats not what the diary is about.

However, after reading throiugh the replies, I’m tempted to think that most people are of the same mind. Even taking into account el cormaco’s response, the feeling I get is that more people want Ronny to finish the job he has started, although the voices of dissent are louder.

Fair enough.

There weren’t any arguments within to make me change my mind, but one made me think, and it makes me wonder what will happen next.

The players that played against ajax, and largely made an impression, would not have played, in all likelihood, had Biton, Johansen, Brown and commons been available.

So is it a true reflection of progress within the fringe players ?

If they were not ready to challenge for a top spot under normal circumstances, are they actually progressing ?

Their efforts on the park suggest they are ready, but the question remains , would they have been given the chance to show what they can do ?

If the long term plan is to develop these players into a team capable of at least a sustained run at the highest level, then it follows that from now until the end of the season, they must be given the chance to bed in.

We already know what the regulars can do, and so the rebuilding must start now, with the added advantage of two transfer windows, which will allow the removal of those who have no future at the club, and the introduction of perhaps a wee bit of experience and other places where it will become apparent strengthening is needed.

If we are to move forward, then there’s no time like the present to begin the journey, starting tomorrow up at Inverness.

Away from all that , though, because we can’t change the past, Europe is done with now, and we can only look forward.

All we can do is support whatever the manager decides is best to do next, and support not only him, but the players.

Theres enough detraction of their abilities in the media, and we need to remember that they read the papers, watch the tv and even go into forums as well.

Maybe we should, at the risk of sounding a bit like the old Celtic View, try to instill a little confidence in them ourselves, because outwith the club, they won’t get it from anywhere else.

Especially as when the management come out with this kind of statement which really doesn’t help anyone;

The positive is Kieran Tierney. Nobody had heard of him two months ago, an 18-year-old playing like a £5m full-back. That’s positive, we want to talk about it,”

That was John Collins. Not surprisingly.

Anyone remember Brian O’Neill ? A midfielder converted to centre back who saved Celtic millions ?

Or Stevie Fulton, the new Roberto Baggio ?

Sure Tierney is a great prospect, but to suddenly come out with this sort of nonsense can be detrimental. The most important things right now are to continue developing him, and to keep his feet on the ground.

Collins is feeling the pressure, claiming that although Celtic have failed in Europe;

“We’ll be judged at the end of the season”

  “If we’re still here.”

I love the “we ”

They didn’t come as a package, they didn’t even know each other, and it would be criminal if Deila wasn’t at least given a chance to bring in his own backroom staff, something in itself which needs to be given serious consideration as the run towards next season begins.

The press, eager to pile on more pressure, asked him if winning the treble might not be enough to save his job.

“It would be pretty unique in world football I imagine. But it could be the reality.”

Why is he talking like this ?

The players read his comments, and the last thing we need right now is any sense of uncertainty amongst them.

“I’m not saying we shouldn’t be doing better in Europe. If you don’t win in Europe with Celtic, everyone is talking about you and saying you are no good.

“That’s not easy for new players, young players. Like any situation, the only way you learn and get better is through the experience.

“If you are Real Madrid, PSG or Manchester United, you go and buy £30 million players. Everyone knows we can’t do that. But we can try to develop players. You can’t think it is guaranteed when you are changing players all the time.

“That’s never going to change, the expectations at a massive club. Everyone wants us to be in the Champions League.

“But we are still sitting at the top of the Premiership, scoring goals most weeks and entertaining. We are in the semi-final of the League Cup and still in the Scottish Cup.

“People will say: ‘That’s nothing’. But a lot of clubs in the world would like to be going for a domestic treble.”

It may be because their own favourites are a long way off a treble, but the press seem to be playing down what would still be a remarkable achievement.

To put this in context, how many trebles have you celebrated as a Celtic fan ? It’s only been done three times.

1967, 1969 and 2001

I’m fifty, and have only celebrated one.

One.

That means realistically that anyone under the age of sixty will share that single memory of going out on the town to celebrate that achievement.

Don’t let the MSM play this down, don’t let them think it’s nothing.

There very scarcity, for whatever reason, backs up that point.

If you are to believe the papers, then this might well be the last time we can reallistically expect to win it.

Second Rangers held their AGM yesterday, and although I largely ignored it, it’s hard to ignore the feelgood factor a few more promises from the glib and shameless liar has put back into the lives of the reporters who hang on every word, although they should be hanging their heads in shame for even giving them the least credibility.

Without checking, i could reasonably guess that he was going to invest in the team, challenge Celtic and pay back all the money he owes to Mike Ashley.

And of course, tell us all how financially sound his club are.

I’m probably not too far off the mark there, and surely , no matter how much the fawning hacks trumpet this, the support won’t wear it this time.

Right, I’ve just checked, i was on the right lines.

But I didn’t think that some of the questions put to king et al would be so challenging.

“Why aren’t Rangers on FIFA 16 ? “

Well, good to see they have not wasted an opportunity to really get to the issues facing their club.

And , just ten minutes before kick off today, they are right behind him…

The South African entreprenuer also announced his club was going to pay the living wage, presumably so he could use the word living in the context of Rangers, prompting Darren Cooney, who edits the online version of the Daily Record, to announce that it had given Celtic a “beamer “

Darren, who isn’t having the best of times on twitter with his insights, claimed that this “beamer ” was on account of Rangers beating Celtic to paying the living wage. Even though they haven’t.

Still, if Dave King says they will, then they will.

And no doubt Darren can tell all his friends in the playground during break that he was right all along.

An indication of the anti Celtic pro Rangers stance at the paper can be sen in what it publishes, but also in what it neglects to mention.

For instance, I do not recall any mention of Celtic giving Rangers a beamer when they contributed the usual £10,000 to Poppy scotland, while the Ibrox club did their usual miniature mayday parade, whilst simultaneously forgetting to make a cash contribution themselves.

Thats because they needed the collection buckets for the AGM;

Anyway, let’s see if you can come up with a witty or topical tagline for this picture…. taken shortly after the Lennon CSC AGM, held at a local sportsground a few years ago.

Good article but I differ with improving, the management team do not hav any erecting.
JC talks gibberish and is arrogant, JPK is a nice big lad but adds nothing to the leadership and Dleli
Ah spouted the same mantra after the game on Thursday, we will be ready for the Champions League in 2016.
This laughabl comment is the same as last years, I do not accept the excuses.
Desmond and Lawell are to blame, where is the forward planning, not the mantra of excuses.
At a PR level the board are a joke, they requires someon to improve the image of the club with the loyal long suffering supporters.
It would not take a fortune to bring in a savvy defender and a strong forward. Griffiths is running himself into the ground as the lone option.
The only decent buy made so far is Ryan Christie, the rest are mince.
Meanwhile w hav shipped our Henderson and Fisher on loan, madness.
I have been a Celtic fan since the Peacock, Tully era, and have seen many fantastic achievements and some shocking disasters, a roller coaster ride.
But this is mediocrity, game after gam of dross, look back at las weekend where was th spark.
I decided after the Qarabag game that this team was going nowhere, Bankiers stupid comments only add to my depression.
Celtic through and through, this could be said of previous players and management, now. Am no so sure.

RD is a nice bloke and talented coach, a real academic of the game. But he aint a manager, Billy McNeil’s statue is being hewn from irons as we speak, and it might just be as tough as he was -THATS a man that inspires players – no RD and his book o opta stats.

I have no issue with JC’s Comments though I do think talking up Tireney could be counter productive in the long run.
I actually read a tweet comparing him with Danny McGrain ffs.
Seriously some fans are off their nut if they think that this early into his development.
We have a player in Tierney a player with great promise that’s it let’s all pray he does.
I can see JC going and being replaced…Big Johan would be my prefered choice as number 2.

I may be in a minority of one but I find the lack of anger from Celtic FC concerning the repetitive anti-Celtic bias of Mesrs McLean,Muir,Madden,Thomson etc extremely disturbing ! It
may well be totally futile and I know many Celtic fans are embarrassed by the mere mention of the subject, however when you have scenarios like Meekings, McLean kicking a prostrate Lustig on the bead and NOT getting a red card,no red for Considine, the pens refused by Muir at Motherwell etc I FIND THAT TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE !! For years I have thought that Celtic ought to inform the SPFL that UNLESS THEY STOP HAVING RANGERS-SUPPORTING/CELTIC HATING officials presiding at Celtic games with their ENDLESS,REPETITIVE BIAS, then Celtic FC will bring a case against the SPFL at the European Court of Human Rights alleging ethnic/racial bias on the part of referees employed by the SPFL. I find the way Celtic just keep taking this on the chin without a word of protest/outrage/anger deeply disappointing. and frankly nauseating. I have sometimes wondered if Celtic have been told by the Ludge that any serious protest will result in Celtic’s expulsion from the SPFL ? I have also wondered if the fiscal restraint shown by the head honchos is based on DELIBERATELY WEAKENING CELTIC in time for a title-winning Rangers return next season ? After all- persisting Celtic domination is unacceptable in the West of Scotland- n’est ce-pas ? It is painfully obvious despite atupid statements from Lawwell to the contrary, that the Desmond/Lawwell Celtic have given up on Europe and their ambition is confined to the domestic “small pond”. So be it ! It is pretty obvious Delia isn’t the answer- Malmo,Molde- both managed by Scandinavians ! looks like Celtic got the wrong one. In the last three seasons, 2 £5 million players per season would probably have put Celtic into the

Ironically all clubs in the Scottish Premiership think the referees are rubbish. Although I get your point about anti-Celtic bias. I wish the SP clubs would get together and tell the SFA to stuff their referees where the sun don’t shine.

Put the refereeing job out to contract in England and Wales (sorry will have to omit Ireland in case of perceived bias again).

Ralph,Agreed with you untill you got to our ass. manager.I have supported Celtic since the late 50s.I never read the Scottish press and i stopped Sky over a decade ago because i felt that i was contributing to the obscene wages of overseas players.Ronnie wouldnt have played the youngsters unless of an injury crises.I beleive that Ronnies talent lies in developing young players and i am incredibley proud that we are bringing in Scotlands best young talent, our new Quality street Kids, however we are in a results business and supporters including myself wish to see a better product on the park with an experianced Manager leading us to CL entry, that wasnt beyond Celtic previously.

Monti

A mate of mine ( Chic ) sent me a YouTube video this morning, the last game the Lisbon Lions played together.
Celtic 6 Clyde 1, the video finished with the greatest manager our club has had and will ever have, tell us about our future…” The future of our club should always be not only to be the best in Scotland, but comparable to the best in Europe”!

This board sow the seeds of our failure, not our success, they sell our best players and replace them with loan signings, the last two managers were cheap options and although I love the ground Neil Francis Lennon walks on, I didn’t want him to get the job either.
John Barnes should have been warning enough that Celtic park is no place to be ‘ learning ‘ in the job.
Ronny Deila is a nice man they say, who gives a fuck?
If Fred West and Harold shipman were in our technical area and getting us into the CL I wouldn’t give a fuck, it’s about Celtic, it’s about results, it’s about winning…..it isn’t about whether RD likes flowers and songs of praise.

This club of ours is massively underachieving!

Ronny Deila does not have the stuff to be a success, he is showing this in his teams performances, we are embarrassing in Europe now…

CELTIC SHOULD BE IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE EVERY YEAR…
NO EXCUSES!

THE CELTIC SUPPORTERS DESERVE IT!

BIG JOCK KNEW IT, THE SUPPORTERS KNOW IT!

DD KNOWS IT AND SO DOES LAWWELL….MAKE IT HAPPEN!

I’m still with the “keep the faith” mob !

We start today with almost all of our key players signed up on long term contracts. The real measure of RD will be how he adds to this in the transfer windows plus who they bring through from the development squad. I personally believe we will have an impressive squad going into next season – but we’ll see.

A Whats the plan to compete in the Champions league every year? Seems like get a new manager ( one with CL experience I imagine would be best ), get lots of new CL tested players and mix them in with our youth players ( that would cost a lot of money), lure them from EPL and other top leagues, spend millions of pounds beyond what we can afford playing in Scotland and oh yes these new players from wherever they are from have to be Celtic through and through. Ask DD to spend 300million of his 1.4b without hope of getting it back and somehow circumnavigate the fair play rules. Seriously. I think developing the very best younger players and mixing some very good experienced players with occasional star buy is the only way we can build towards CL football on a yearly basis. I know I’ll be howled at and that’s fine as t only my opinion. I have never managed a football club and I admit that I wouldn’t know how to.

Football can be a simple game, you have a plan and you play to your strengths. Under Deila that has certainly not been the case.

The bias in Scotland is palpable. The Establishment were aware that Rangers were cheating and running a massive overdraft. The Bank of Scotland turned a blind eye until Lloyds arrived.
Compare the level of debt which Fergus resolved to the one carried by Rangers, never mind the EBTs
Regarding the SPFL and referees, just think back to last years Scottish Cup semi final, never mind the on hundred and one other perceived errors. For example Gollum and the Broadfoot penalty all those years ago, or Maloney being brought down time after time in the penalty area in a so called Old Firm game, sorry that’s paranoia.
The great man himself advised his team that every time they stepped on the park they were playing against twelve men.
Currently there is no man with cohones at Celtic, our management team, players and the board are all nice people.
We require a shake up and someone to defend Celtic’s corner

Champions League is worth £10m plus each year, that’s a significant slice of our turnover.
In the years we didn’t make it recently we’ve sold players to balance the books.
If we now accept that the current team isn’t going to be at that level for a couple of years at least who do we sell to bring in the missing money? Who in the current team will command a fee in the millions?
I’m not saying I have the answer but we need to ask the question.

Bleeding Inverness that’s what. Arrived a couple of hours ago and as we passed Aviemore we were in a whiteout and I realised that my figure hugging short sleeved Celtic top was probably not going to be up to the job.

As Inverness loomed, the snow disappeared like …..snaw affa dyke…..the dyke was drinking in the Glenalbyn.

It has now warmed up to T-shirt weather…..14 of them.

My concern is what happens tomorrow to the players from thursday. Do mcgregor , teirney , allan and co get to continue or do they get left out so the usual suspects can return and give us nothing new. Personally i think they should be allowed to play, if they can manage in europe they certainly wont struggle against inverness.

The easy thing is to blame the board . I agree , but what should we blame the board for ? Is it the board’s fault that not enough money is spent on buying players and paying wages to the first team squad . I don’t see evidence of the club stock piling money or taking gross excessive amounts out for themselves .

The problem must be the board’s inability to raise enough money to have Celtic completing effectively in the Champions League every season . We have to ask ourselves how we can roughly double our turnover on an annual basis . Can us supporters do anything to hel, apart from ridiculing everyone involved .

Stands to reason monti , talking about ten million for him tho he has been in england and seems happy with us. I still think guidetti would have stayed and fired us into the champions league if we had just pushed the boat out a wee bit. He was a bit of a dick but cant argue with the goals he scored , its a striker like that we need with a bit of presence and size to trouble defenders in europe . Griff is great but doesnt have the prsence. He would be beter in a two

Thanks for the shout Monti.Good thing when you drop down from Drumochter and The Slochd, you’re back down to Inverness at sea level and the snow turns to rain. That doesn’t stop the gales from blowing though. I hope the match is on but instead of a level playing field we might get a ski run.I also agree with Monti about Bitton, who is not the finished article. I don’t want to sell any of our current performing players but Boerrichte and Stokes can go.

Jim you forgot that set piece in the 88th minute. 3-1, Inverness to score first in their own net. 1 of our goals from a set-piece, the other from open play. Biton is going to end up paying CB for us. Tierney will end up in CDM. So will McGregor and Mr Glass. If Armstrong is not Careful he will end up at RB. To me it looks like Ronnie is still all about his total football. We will see 2 more tactics from him and every player will be able to play 3-4 positions. If you don’t agree to that (Messers Stokes, Guidetti etc) then get tae flock!
