Celtic Diary Wednesday November 25: The Solution To All Our Woes ?

And I’ll bet none of you even considered it.

I know I didn’t. but when you think about it, there might be something in it.

Embedded image permalink

No, not Andy Murray, although he can play a sound, defensive game, but the bold Charlie Mulgrew.

During a Q and A on twitter, the Scotland international said;

.@pmcglink I’m available for Ajax on Thursday

Embedded image permalink

This t shirt exists, and might become very popular should my theory actually have any substance ( hah, substance. did  you see what I did there ? ) might become a best seller. You can get one from the Mire CSC Merch on twitter.

In fact, if he plays, and brings a wee bit of calmness and maturity to the side, and at the same time helps to organise a defence which appears to have adopted the “wan o’ youze gauny get that ” method of securing the back line, even if it’s from the holding midfield position, then we might just have found another line of revenue for the club.

We could get scarves and t shirts with “Am Ur Charlie ” printed on them.

Let me know when a marketing strategist position becomes available at Celtic. I’ll raise enough money to sign Messi, Ronaldo and , for a laugh, that Waghorn bloke who’ll be on the move in January.

Of course, all of this depends on Celtic getting a result against Ajax, and despite all the doom and gloom  amongst the support, no matter how you look at it, we are still playing at home, we should still have massive support, and we still have a side, that on it’s day , is capable of scoring goals.

Alright, so we have a team that is capable of conceding them as well, and may be a little light on confidence, but thats where we come in.

No booing, no screaming, no “you’re a fucking idiot ” every time something goes wrong, A little support is needed instead.

Cast your mind back to the Celtic- Juventus game of a few years ago-well, its about thirteen years ago, but I’ve never been very good where time is concerned, as anyone waiting on me to turn up anywhere will vouch for- and that free kick from Del Piero that opened the scoring early in the game.

Sure there was a wee second or two of silence, with the odd “oh for fucks sake ” or  “we’re in the shit here ” but gradually the air filled with a chant of Celtic, Celtic, Celtic, which by the time the hoops restarted the game, had reached a crescendo.

And lo, there was probably the most inspired performance of recent years which led to a 4-3 win.

We still exited the tournament, but what a game….

The footballing version of the chicken and egg question is who should inspire who ?

Is it up to the players to get the fans going, or is it up to the fans to get the players going.

In football, it’s not so easy, but again, looking back, remember that blistering start against Liverpool, when Henrik Larsson came back after injury and scored early on ?

The noise from the crowd as Celtic surged forward and won the corner, the noise after he scored ?

Or the noise when Shunsuke Nakamura whipped in his second free kick that ensured Edwin van der Saar would be immortalised in any future video about free kicks, with nine minutes left to go, and a penalty save as well ?

With that kind of support, even the greatest side will buckle.

And Ajax are not a great side.

The support must do their bit, and consequently the players must do theirs.

We need the wingers flying at players, we need the ball in and around the penalty box as often as possible, although it might help to have a couple of players on the end of it.

For that reason, I’d be looking at two forwards in this game. It’ll surprise Ajax, and it will surprise you when i suggest that Anthony Stokes should be the man supporting Leigh Griffiths.

Ciftci is a diddy, and Cole is , well, like every other forward we’ve bought in from outside Scotland, unfit.

Stokes is perhaps a last resort, but then again, we are in the last chance saloon.

And we really have nothing to lose.

The political situation developing in Turkey, where a Russian jet was shot down in retaliation for the bombing of ISIS oil tankers owned by the Turkish presidents son  (look I’m way ahead of the media on this one )  means that there is a slim chance that the game against Fenerbache will be called off. That means we will be awarded a 3-0 win, and we haven’t had one yet this year, so all we have to do is beat Ajax.

Alright, maybe i am, so lets just concentrate on beating Ajax.

Speaking of the situation in Turkey, now that they’ve shot down a Russian plane, it will be interesting to see how they get on in Level 2, where they have to fight off a ground invasion supported by helicopters and naval bombardment.

Should we be worried ?

I am.

What if there’s no Turkey for Christmas ?

The debate around Celtic facing Dundee in the United States, presumably inspired by the same people who wanted to build helicopter landing pads and hotels and casinos and , oh you know the things, took another twist yesterday when the city of Philadelphia, home of the Rocky Balboa franchise, offered to host the game.

Embedded image permalink

I’m warming to the idea. Going to Philadelphia in that quaint old stadium with no roof will take me back to my younger days, standing on the terraces of Cappielow….

Look, it’s even got the explosions I dearly remember from Saturday nights in Greenock;

Main Image

An Eagles insider told SunSport: “We are aware of this and are in negotiations for hosting this game.

“We anticipate having a final agreement soon.”

This in depth report from the Sun, adds that;

A Fifa spokesman said: “In accordance with the Fifa Regulations Governing International Matches, any such match could only be played if approved by the member associations and confederations concerned.

“Further, according to art. 82.4 of the Fifa statutes, Fifa may take in any case a final decision.”

A Uefa spokesman said: “This is a matter for the national associations concerned and for Fifa.

“But clubs cannot simply choose which country they want to play in.

“There are rules in place and procedures which need to be respected.”

As usual, their sources are impeccable, spokesmen and insiders, at least at Etims we have the grace to admit we make things up, but there is something everyone has missed about this debate, something that is of paramount importance.

Something, to be honest, we should have thought of years ago.

It’s got people talking about our game again, and in a good way.

Even Sky sports made a mention of the possibility of Celtic and Dundee playing in the USA, although perhaps it also shows how little they are really interested in our game, something which should be brought up the next time contracts are renewed, or not renewed , as the case may be.

Embedded image permalink

The simple fact that there is a Philadelphia Supporters club is an indicator of a massive market over there, and as a delegate from the North American Supporters Association explained at a recent meeting at Celtic Park, there is a massive demand for genuine Celtic football club merchandise already.

Surely the natural step is to at least investigate it ?

For the moment though, it’s nice to see people talking positively about the game, and it makes sense to look into every possible revenue stream. who knows, maybe clubs could link up with clubs over there to swap players, and so on. That would generate interest, and even if the idea falls flat on it’s face, at least we would have tried.

Away from all that, and it’s time to laugh at those less well off than us, and we again salute James Doleman for his accurate and informative report on the first of many-so many when he asked where he should sit, he was told that there was no room left in the Rangers End-court cases featuring the new entity down ibrox way.

The full report is here.. and worth a read because it explains exactly what happens, and what it means, a concept  that the MSM in Scotland have yet to fully understand. Well worth a read for anyone confused by events at ibrox.

James Doleman Reports..

Fair play to James for that, it must have been difficult to concentrate. We hear that someone in the courtroom has an app on his phone that mimics a police siren, and when it went off, everyone representing Rangers and the SFA ran like fuck towards the door.

It gives a glimpse into the mindset at the SFA, and at Ibrox, as light begins to shine on their acts and thoughts of the last twenty years or so.

The SFA especially, given their urgency to “end all this uncertainty ” because of the damage it’s doing to “Rangers and the rest of Scottish football ”

Of course, no-one in the media will ask anyone at the SFA exactly what they mean by that.

And no-one in the media is asking why no-one is asking that .

But then, as they all have each others heads up each others arses, like some sort of warped daisy chain, it’s no real surprise.

Who knows what a real journalist would uncover when he starts digging?

Actually, i think we’ve all got a pretty good idea.

As far as I’m concerned, the SFA just lined themselves up alongside a man who could be in jail over Christmas for breaching a contempt of court order that he is under a suspended sentence for .

Thats without his other convictions taken into account, and if it’s true that you know a man by the company he keeps…

( Or the club , I’m not sure of anything anymore )

With so many appearances in front of the bench due to take place, we are only going to mention them, firstly, when they have happened, and secondly, from a completely neutral point of view, as by laying out the facts as they are coming to light  is the only way to show the world what a cheating bunch of thieving fly by night bastards that lot really are.

They’ve an AGM on Friday, the Annual Grasping Meeting, where they grasp at anyone who shows any inclination to chuck money towards them.

We asked a financial analyst firstly, to help us spell analyst , and then to give his thoughts on what would happen to any money invested in Ibrox…

Fianlly, another missing words question….

What are  the missing words in this headline ?

Ladbrokes chiefs scolded by ****** ******* at shareholder

meeting

Two clues…

the asterisks correspond to the letters in the words,

and,

presumably the golf was cancelled that day.

Morning Ralph,
I’m all for the player swap thing, we could give them Ambrose and Boerrigter….they don’t need to give us anyone.

Dermot Desmond seems to be finding his voice, he is getting all upset at Ladbrokes possible merger with Coral.

Maybe that’s the way forward, we could rip up the Lennoxtown pitches and put in a mini golf course, other land space could be used for building a racecourse simulator.

I dont agree that ciftis a dud , he just isnt playing and just like gms he has lost his confidence. Pierre got it bang on today , anyone can see he is the type who plays off a goal scorer so unless your playing him in the rogic role or possibly out wide he will be shite. Which brings me to armstrong who is also being branded a dud because he is not being played in his position. It really is a no brainer unless you are the celtic coaching team! . Mulgrew should be the man to partner simonovic , two ball plsying centre halfs and mulgrew brings the experience we badly need.

Hi Ralph it’s been a while since I posted but I was getting bored with all the bickering in early October. I realise what I’ve been missing with some laugh out loud moments this morning so thank you and well done for your perseverence with the diary. Listening to pop master this morning and a question about Scott Mackenzie/San Francisco and I thought 1967 as it used to be played all the time pre kick off, then Mary Hopkin’s Those were the days was played and I’m thinking that the chorus of that song that was sung with gusto back then might be so very apt some fifty years on but may not be so pc these days. H.H. How is PB doing theze days?

Hi Gerry

Much the same as you. Reading but letting the weans fight among themselves. It might be nearing bedtime, though, as the energy levels seem to have dropped a bit.

Fortunately the Diary never flags and that gives me the incentive to get up in the morning.

Thank you for asking.

The players are not the problem ,they look short of confidence ,they know that Deila is a dud and so are his systems and tactics,, I think a lot of supporters are giving him the benefit of doubt still why, do people want the problems we see every game get to the level where the damage done is impossible to reverse, please get him out now.molde at home was the last straw for me.

Monti

Reply to  corktim

Corktim,
100% agree with you regarding Deila.
I have nothing more to say about him other than goodbye.
Certain players need to look at themselves in the mirror, regarding their own performance levels.
Deila is a different matter altogether tho, all we hear about is ” development, work in progress, give me more time, I’ll get us into the CL ” It is numbing now!
Last season he constantly banged on about the ‘ Treble ‘???!
What is this fascination with the treble?

My problem with Deila goes back to the Maribor game at CP, Deila DIDN’T go for their throats, the hard bit was done away from home, getting a draw.
What should have followed in the CP dressing room was orders from Deila to the players to go and get the job done, get the crowd rocking and find out what Maribor were all about.
Instead we got a pathetic introverted performance.
From that night I had my mind made up, it sickened me that in front of a full house at CP he sent a Celtic side out to be cautious!

Manager? He is a number 2 at best!

Thanks Ralph for a wee upbeat diary.

I also spent my youth in Greenock and the Wee Dublin end was always an ‘experience’. Where I learned to open a Lager can with a two Bob bit! This was a predecessor to toilets. I am off to Istanbul (thanks for the contact with ( Istanbhoys) with no fear as I have lived through real border troubles with Greenock and the Port.

Anyway, if Stokes is fit I would be happy to take the chance to have two up front. Concerned that won’t have Biton to help defend their attacks on the break.

Luck favours the brave (and the stupid, maybe)

Just a wee technical note, opening the diary on a PC and about 70% of the images are never shown, only when you open from a mobile phone.

Maybe you could get Stevie the IT guy to help out if hes finished his scouting on Football manager for the Rangers (sic)

Jeez oh, Anthony Stokes, potential saviour! we really are in desperate shape, and no fair bringing up those games from the past, back then we had a team to believe in, full of passion and fight, who even after going a goal down would play on the front foot, now its very hard to roar on a team who play one up front and rarely have anyone in the box when crosses come in. Ajax are no great shakes at present either but in all honesty I expect they will boss the last 30 minutes as we blow out our arses and they’ll likely win the game then.

Seen on Twitter yesterday the record breaking Sevco are at it again- currently 7-8 live proceedings going on that they are involved in. GIRUY Timmy!

Oh and state aid plonker has lost his latest attempt to eat up tax payers money pursuing an agenda driven by hatred and jealousy. I once asked him on Twitter if he was interested in all possible state aid / improper use of public funds. No surprise to hear he admitted it was only cases invlolving Celtic he took an interest in. Oh well , at least he admitted it. Hope his dog is okay today.

tomorrow is going to be a real test of character with so many players out. Ajax will start as favorites because we will be playing alot of our squad players but it gives them a chance to step up and show that maybe they can do better than the players who are out.
losing Brown is massive but maybe just maybe Scott Allan could start in Browns position and give us some drive.
being the underdog might just suit us and who knows, we might surprise ourselves.

Its time to cut out this two holders in midfield pish , browns out for weeks now so time for a more dynamic midfield , possibly bitton holding and armstrong , rogic or allan attacking giving much needed support to griffiths. Best and probable team

Its such a shame that the SMSM see all issues in Scottish football through the prism of SEVCO. If its perceived as bad for SEVCO then they are against it, even if its good for Scottish football. If its is perceived as good for SEVCO and is actually bad for Scottish football then they are for it. They are actually helping to destroy Scottish football by buying into the SEVCO doomsday theory and trying their hardest to make it happen. Yet the facts are that clubs are doing much better financially, at least in the SPFL, blowing the myth that Scottish football needs SEVCO for financial reasons. All the clubs are actively managing within their means legally and paying tax demonstrating their ethical commitment to fair play. Some clubs are looking at innovative ideas like playing in the USA to raise the profile of Scottish football and generate interest in Scottish football. Who do they find to opine on this, none other than Kris Boyd, who immediately rubbishes the idea and Scottish football based on the SEVCO agenda. Lets disallow this nasty corrupt narrative and focus on what’s good for Scottish football and there is plenty to look at at the club level. The SMSM and SFA etc have to focus on what’s good for all of Scottish football rather then one nearly bankrupt team playing in the second tier.

Looking at the lineups above:

Lustig, Bitton and Johansen are all suspended.
Commons injured,Brown maybe doubtful, Mulgrew fit. I think Forrest and Mackay-Steven can tear open any defence. GMS is due a blinder. Forrest can also change a game. If Commons is fit, I might begin with him and sub him with one of the young wingers. With injuries and suspensions, our squad looks thin. The “Deila out” brigade have a tough job tomorrow night. You must somehow cheer Celtic but that will boost Deila’s chances of staying. For you, it is a win/lose situation. For me, it is win/win. The team wins, Ronny wins. Which is the whole point.I know our team can play real football and for some of the time, have done that in Europe this year. The optimist in me wants us to prove that tomorrow night.C’mon the Hoops.

These days I live in Boston and last time Celtic played here it was a sell out against Sporting Lisbon at Fenway Park. There is also a large Portuguese diaspora in Boston. Any Celtic game would be well attended in Boston, New York, Philadelphia or Chicago. I have always believed Celtic could easily get cross merchandising agreements with many US professional and college teams the Notre Dame Fighting Irish come to mind. The Boston Celtics also come to mind! Whoever the commercial folks on our Board or on staff are, they really need to get cracking on this.!

Monti

Reply to  BroxburnBhoy

Broxburnbhoy,
You are right, why has this board or previous Celtic board not done this?
Is it because they don’t have the ability or acumen to generate the interest in North America and the United States?

Celtic should go to the U S. and Canada every opportunity we get.
Maybe if the SPFL get dragged into the 21St Century and have a winter break of at least a month, Celtic could head across the Atlantic and play a few games mixed with some training.

Celtic has so much potential, but who has the hunger to drive it through?
Two Billionaires on our board and we still can’t put a quality team on the park, it is a shocking state of affairs!

I just wish I had their money because if I did, Celtic would be on a different level!

We need a lift, the Celtic supporters are incredible in their passion for our club, I am at my happiest in life when I see the Celtic support happy, trust me when I say, if I had the money we would have a team that would grace our shirt and fulfil our hopes and dreams.

Celtic first and Celtic last and Celtic overall!

A Quiz:

Who said this:

“The only way you learn is by mistakes. We have to look at it and we will be better for it,” “The movement could be better, the timing of pass, the quality of first touch, all the things you take for granted. It relies on the technique and the boys work every day, their work ethic has been first class.”

“But as I said it’s that little bit of cleverness and it’s what we do day in day out. So keep doing it, keep working hard and the results will come. I see calls for Plan B and Plan C and big strikers and being more direct. We’ve got to be better, Plan B is doing Plan A better. I’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, that’s what we have to do.”

As for tonight’s game, I remember a time when I couldn’t wait to get home from work to go to the game or watch it at home, tonight? I’ll watch the game but I’m not feeling it, I have no buzz.
That is the truth of it, I want rid of Deila but at the same time, Lawwell has a lot to answer for IMO, bringing ” developing ” managers to Celtic park is a mistake.
Celtic need an experienced manager and a few experienced players who have played a lot of CL games.
We are kidding ourselves on with this guy in charge.

Disappointed and disillusioned with the whole Celtic vibe just now.
It isn’t a real Celtic team that’s out there!

celtic will win tonight… i have a feeling guys like scott allan will step up to the plate… what concerns me is that as soon as johansen is fit or sorts his head out they will be dropped, i think they will win tonight but lose in turkey
