Celtic Diary Monday November 2: Time To Ignore The Spin

With a commanding lead at the top of the table, and a place in the League cup semi final won, attention turns to the europa League again now, because after all, thats where Ronny Deila will be judged.

With nothing good to write about their favourite team, the media resorted to their plan B, which is to write bad stuff about their least favourite side.

Matt Lindsay in the Herald;

Ronny Deila is wrong – progressing to the last 32 of the

Europa League is vital to his future at Celtic

Dave McCarthy in the Record

Ronny Deila may be delighted as Celtic move six points clear..

but his progress will be judged more by European matches

Andrew Smith in the Scotsman;

ALL too much will be poured into Celtic’s confrontation at home to Molde on Thursday. Whatever impassioned addresses he may offer up, Ronny Deila’s credibility as manager of the Glasgow club goes on the line in the Europa League tie.

It’s almost as though they agree on what to write amongst themselves in the pub the night before.

Yes, Deila will be judged on Europe, but it won’t cost him his job should Celtic fail to get out of their Europa group. Convincing wins over Hearts and Aberdeen point towards a realistic treble, if the referees can be trusted, that is.

Sacking a manager on the back of winning a treble ? Or even a double ?

Only in Scotland would this even be a debate.

All this nonsense about bigger resources and expecting trophies is little more than malicious jealousy, and should be treated as such.

Consider this. Those headlines are on the back of another Celtic win, which enforces their credentials as the best team in Scotland. Yet somehow, we are only a few days away from a crisis.

On the other hand, someone’s magic hat seems to have gone missing, but don’t worry. They’ll bounce back, they’ll learn from their defeat and theres no need to sign anyone in January because it will upset the players he already has.

The wheels came off the Warburton wagon yesterday as Hibernian beat Second Rangers, no-one was really surprised, as full time teams usually prove to be too much for the Ibrox side.

Mark Warburton: Rangers will play worse and win

in the Championship after Hibernian defeat

I’m not sure if thats a promise, but it’s an attempt to stem any criticism of a manager who may about to be found out as the second quarter of the season begins, and other sides have worked out how to play against his…

“They’re angry. If you’ve delivered a poor performance you don’t get angry. But that wasn’t a poor performance.

“We dominated possession and created chance after chance second half.

“We’ve given away a set piece, we lost a goal to a set-piece which we work on and it shouldn’t happen.

“It (the anger) is about the fact we’ve put in a good performance. The game is about opinions but it was a good performance.

“We got the early goal second half then dominated and how we haven’t won the game of football respectfully I don’t know.

“But we have to learn from it. We missed chance after chance and they’ve scored from a set-piece. Learn and be better for it.”

another way of looking at that is they did everything they could, but Hibernian knew how to beat them. His talk of dominating possession was similar after the St. Johnstone mauling. Saints let them have the ball, but took it of them when they looked dangerous.

I mention them simply so we can compare and contrast the reactions of what appears to be a very frightened media just now.

Perhaps there is truth in some of the stories circulating, and they are in serious trouble again.

So, if you want positive spin on Celtic, the best place to get that is here.

Though it’s not spin.

James Forrest, reborn under Ronny Deila and more importantly, staying injury free longer, wants a new deal at the club.

“Obviously I’m still at Celtic and it’s a great club, a big club. We are in Europe and it’s a great place to be.

“We are talking. I want to stay at Celtic. Everything you do every day is enjoyable and I
want to stay here. A lot of the boys feel the same because it’s such a big club.

“I think I have a year and two months left and I am pretty confident it can be sorted. As I say, it’s a big club and you don’t get much better than the European nights here.

“In the last year I’ve kicked on and I want to keep doing that. I really want to play more games and enjoy these massive matches in Europe. I love them with Celtic and hopefully with Scotland as well. I just want to keep going.

“The manager has been really good for me. I’ve kicked on since the end of last season.

“It was really good for me in the last couple of months of it and I have kicked on again.

“We are on the same wavelength and he has been really good for a lot of the boys. He gives everybody their chance and we’ve got a lot of games coming up, so we’ll all keep getting our chance.”

Forrest rambles a bit, and the rest of the interview is the usual we’re all doing great kind of stuff, which probably annoyed the reporter, though I did have a chuckle when the last line read;

We are all going into Thursday’s game with real confidence.”

As the reporter was David McCarthy again, I can only imagine him slapping his notebook shut, standing up and declaring

Perhaps the rhetoric will change as the game gets nearer.

Deila will be aware of how difficult this game will be, if only because Molde will be confident.

He may also be considering doing something a wee bit different, perhaps not in formation, but personnel.

Well, the bsence of Scott Brown means he’ll have to, and whilst we all know Brown is a vital player, it may prove an advantage he’s not there.

Tom Rogic could well be the key here. He can run at defenders, pick a pass and is strong in the tackle. With johansen withdrawn beside Nir biton, Molde will find Celtic a different side from the one that capitualted in Norway a couple of weeks ago.

With ever game the defence is looking better, and although Celts still conceded the customary late goal from a set piece, the two centre halves are getting more comfortable each time they play.

Well, customary goal from a set piece ? Suspicions of offside ?

Embedded image permalink

Molde themselves are no mugs. Budgets and crowd sizes and all the other reasons why they should have been easy meat count for nothing when the two teams take to the park.

Molde won their final home game of the season 4-1 against Viking at the weekend, and are on a great run at the moment. Worryingly for us, all their focus is on europe, but as that was their penultimate game of the season, maybe they will be a little tired.

So the high tempo game we know Celtic are capable of is a must.

And if we do get in front, we must continue to play the way we started and not allow them back into it. We know they will counter attack, or at least we expect them to, but however they play Celtic must adapt quickly to it.

The target for the remaining games is nine points. It can be done, and with a good lead in the league, Celtic can now give the Europa their full attention.

Especially those players who are still disappointed that they are in this tournament.

There another foodbank collection coming up at Celtic Park;

Embedded image permalink

We hear that Lord Livingston will be on hand to collect your donations, and he will match them with a big cheque ( You’ve got good hearing-Ed )

Alright, i made that bit up.

But it wouldn’t do his image any harm if he did, would it ?

Right now he’s not a favourite;

Embedded image permalink

Then he could resign from the board and the house of lords, and sing Go On Home British Soldiers while he burns his ermine cloak.

That wouldn’t do his image much good, but boy, what an image.

Last word today goes to Ronny Deila, and it should fill you with at least optimism , and maybe even confidence, ahead of Thursday game;

We want to win all the time, of course we do, but we will always meet challenges and how you deal with them is the most important thing.

“If we do it in the right way, as we have, then we will be even more united and get stronger as a group.

“I have been really impressed by the way the boys have bounced back and showed that we are a team who really should get credit and one that is ready to fight for everything.

“I think we are more confident. You could see that when we were on the ball against Aberdeen.

“It has been tough coming back from the performance in Molde and all the things that happened around it.

“When you solve these problems in the right way and people get focussed to what we need for the future, all you need then is confidence and that is coming with good results.

“It can take time to get a game like that (Molde) out of the system, but we have won 5-0, 2-1 and 3-1 since then so we showed up well.

“I was really pleased with how we played on Saturday. It was entertaining to watch. When we want to attack and when we do it together, then it is hard to stop us.

“It was a great end to the week. It was incredibly exciting to be a part of that performance.”

Well, not quite the last word. what’s going on here ?

Great article, couple of home wins in the Europa could turn the season into a great one.

We’ve never had a positive press, look at the Huns for what positive fawning press does for you?

A (temporary) move to Hampden was one of the things John James was suggesting a couple of weeks ago, in the event that a rumoured financial meltdown turns out to be more than the online speculation of the “obsessed”

https://johnjamessite.wordpress.com/2015/10/19/a-healthy-club/

It remains to be seen whether this is total rubbish , wishful thinking, or a hint that there’s “no smoke without fire”……

A recent official statement by The Tribute Act indicated that The 3 Bears have promised additional interest free loans to cover any “projected shortfall”. This in itself can be read as an admission that rumoured cash flow problems are not a total figment of the imagination… as does the announcement that there will be no signings in the January transfer window.

It should also be noted that similar statements – intended to placate The People and stop the average blue-nose asking too many awkward questions – were also made back in 2011/2012, before sales of icecream & jelly surged.

IMHO only the blazer & brogues in The Blue Room at Ibrokes know the true state of their financial health. To me, it’s as clear as mud. There are simply far too many conflicting stories. However, this might change by Fri 13th Nov if Judge Tyre rules that The Walking Dead are liable for Greens legal fees, which could well prove to be a financial tipping point which even break the surface of the wall of silence on this issue in the MSM.

We’ll see.

We still looked open to counter attack against Aberdeen (thankfully they were poor), if we can tighten that up I don’t see why we can’t beat Molde.

I take comfort going into Europe in that we have not hit top gear yet and believe Molde are at the top of their game, we have a lot more to come as for them I’m not sure! We were suckered by them the 1st game and caught on the break and it would be complete and utter folly for the same to happen again 2-0 the hoops.

Second rangers have been riding their luck for weeks and are now found out! Matt Lyndsay is a joke and will do anything to stick the boot into the hoops. A good win on Thursday will shut them up!!

I do admire James Forrest’s footballing ability, but unfortunately, Ive not witnessed it all that often.

This is down to the player spending more time on the treatment table than the field of play.

I’m sure its just a coincidence, but his recent form has improved at the same time as he says he wants to sign a new contract.

Of course I could be wrong.

Or just cynical.

I’m not as worried about Thursdays game as I thought I would be. In fact I’m quietly confident.

For some reason since the start of the season up to the Molde game Celtic haven’t got into top gear. Individuals under performing, tempo & stamina issues. Perhaps an overall team confidence dip. And of course a new defence set up.

But what I have admired is the reaction to the Molde defeat. It would have been easy to let the heads go down and believe the fabricated crisis spouted by the churnilists.

But no. We have turned a corner and got better. I hope and trust it will translate into Europe.

Morning all,
Delighted James Forrest is looking to sign a contract extension, his best years are still to come and on his day he is a game changer.
Forrest needs to deliver more often however, he needs to start demanding the ball out wide, then just go at the full back at full tilt.

Thursday against Molde is a must win, even if we aren’t going to qualify from the group, Celtic park needs to become a fortress again, let’s get back to winning all our home games in Europe, use that as a starting point!

Judging by the picture showing the collection points, we’ve missed the food bank collection by a couple of years.

I’m happy that Forrest is keen on signing on long term as I rate him, but surely he’d be more effective on the right wing – or even through the middle.

Anyway, we played well against the sheep and another performance like that will achieve a good result against Molde on Thursday.

The MSM do not have an agenda, they are honest reporters, covering every day issues without bias.
The above is the coverage they believe, they are blind side by the Elephant in the room.
There was only one team winning the game against ABZ, the goal scored by the sheepish at the end was offside, although the defence again did not cover themselves in glory, especially Gordon.
Celtic totally controlled until Jojo and Tierney went off, immediately Awfe came on we started making them look good.
I watched the Hibees beat the Empire yesterday in a local hostilely in Ayrshire, what a joy, also had a wee tenner on the Hibees.
Loved how Warbs was so out of touch when h commented on the game. When Svco play fulltimersthey stutter.

I wonder if any action will be taken by the SFA on the clear sectarian chanting at Easter Road yesterday. During a bit of argy Bargy between the players, I clearly heard ” The Billy Boys” song being loudly chanted by Sevco fans. I await action by the SFA and police on this clear breach of law and codes. Unless of course singing about being up to ones knees in fenian blood is entirely acceptable in Scotland. Seems it is, like it always has been. There are three major football stories in Scotland. One is that the Scottish Champions are playing well beating their closest domestic rivals and have a European game on Thursday. Let’s all hope they win as it will be good for the game in Scotland. The other two are about Sevco. They are running out of cash and they are unable to beat full time professional teams to boot. They may fold again and have points deducted. They owe Mike Ashley money that they refuse to pay back! Their Chairman has reneged on promises made during his takeover. So what is the story – Ronnys job is in trouble – pitiful piss poor cowardly reporting. Most of the SMSM are a disgrace to professional journalism and seem to still be drinking together getting the news phoned into the pub so they can all tell a different shade of the same story. Dinosaurs from another age. Maybe the NUJ should have a word with their members in Scotland and demand higher preofeasional standards

Warburton said…

“We’ve given away a set piece, we lost a goal to a set-piece which we work on and it shouldn’t happen.”

Somebody at the SFA will need to answer for that. They should not have free kicks given against them.

Maybe that’s why they want to rent Hampden. They can save phone bills by just walking up the stairs if they ever have another free kick awarded against them. …

For whatever reason there has been a muted response to the thread I put up at the weekend regarding this Player Fund idea.
I am wondering if it is the case folk like to talk about changes rather than try implement them?
All I ask is we all put £5 into the Celtic Foundation over the next few weeks to see if there is a chance we can mobilise and actually do something positive for the Club and ourselves.
That £5 will also go to helping someone less fortunate than yourself so it is not a waste of time or cash.
So come on folks lets get the ball rolling on this and prove it can be done.

Reply to  bgbhoy

Thing is bg when we say everyone I actually mean EVERYONE.
That is all those Tims spread all over the globe who actively seek to watch games however they can.
I ead about 4 years ago the figure 9 million estimated by the Club.
Now I don’t know if that figure is correct or just plucked out the ether at random to serve a PR statement?
Thing is if even half that amount were to take this up then that’s over £20m hitting the Foundation.
To put that into perspective the Foundation has raised over £7m for good causes since it was conceived in 1995.
So again I shall say this again if anyone out there is serious about doing something different at Celtic then now is the time to find out just how many of those millions actually will.
I have Donated £10 and put *PlayerFund on the comments section so the Club know why I made the Donation.
Believe me when I say if enough Fives hit the Accounts those who make the real decisions at Celtic Park will sit up and take notice.
Or you could just choose to simply accept more of the same.
Nothing will change unless we change it it really is that simple.
Now can any of you spare a £5 note to find out..knowing fine well it is going to a great cause either way?
£5 is all it will cost you.

BroxburnBhoy

Charlie, I think it is a great idea and I’m willing to contribute. If we want to change things we need to act rather than talk. Alas I expect a lot more talking and moaning than acting to change things through the the ways we have to change things. It great living in a world as we would like it to be and that said we actually can live and act in a world as it is. We can buy shares, support the foundation more, contribute to a player fund, use whatever means we have to influence the board, the media and the SFA. A bit of supporter activism and a strong commercial astute board will take us a long way.

The week has been great.
I could quite happily listen to the Ronnie-tells-it-how-it-is on a loop. In fact a musical Tim needs to make that into a 12-inch remix for the rest of us.
Been spending a lot of my time re-watching that, the Hearts and Sheep games; and throw in the BBC Shortbread Frankie Macca quick-fire interview for a giggle, it’s been a blast.

We know the defense are still getting their act-together (Hopefully!), and the sheep were looking off-side, by why does Craig Gordon do an Alan Rough and only half try to save the ball? – especially when he has a clean-sheet on-the-line; I am really starting to wonder about some of his attempts and positioning i.e. Molde first goal for another example; beat at his near-hand post (inexcusable for goalies).
Bailly must shank in training.

More important, WE fans would notice. And lots of kids and families might have a better Christmas.Win/win. What’s a tenner in the great scheme of things? A pint and a fish supper.

The jury still seems to be out regarding RD as a manager but he certainly appears to be very skilful at developing players.
I’m particularly impressed with the improvement in Forrest, Biton and Griffiths. Hopefully the defence continue their (needed) improvement and I think we have a wee gem with KT at left back!

His own development as a manager will surely happen.

A lot of calm comments today and most of them upbeat for a change (where’s Monti?…he’s probably trying to untie the noose!! lol Only messing with ye Monti.
We’re all champing at the bit waiting for Thursday..I detect an air of quiet optimism, not overconfidence, and we could be in for a great win.
We still have to keep an eye on the other game though..a draw between Ajax and Fenerbahce would do nicely.
That would put more pressure on Ajax in our next game…and a win for Molde against Fenerbahce would be ideal.
So going into the last game it would look like this:- Molde 10
Celtic 8
Fenerbahce 5
Ajax 4
I know I’m getting ahead of myself, but it’s just one scenario that the media seem incapable of grasping or even considering. Thursday’s matches will confirm our chances of progressing.

Ronny’s idea is to build for the future…sure we’ll sell off those who don’t want to stay (Wanyama, Hooper, Van Dyke, but he’ll build his team around the guys who want to stay at Celtic. Bitton said almost the same thing that Henrik said when he stayed with us “..my wife and kids are happy here too…”. These are guys who are not greedy for the money, mature thinking guys who know they are at a good moment in their career and have a settled home life…unlike the others who just have agents saying ” show me the money, show me the money”
I’m delighted to hear this news today and hopefully it will set other players to thinking that staying at Celtic is better than disappearing down the EPL black hole with pockets stuffed with cash. HH

Great article, good optimism. Am I reading the right site? Please keep the good vibes goin things aren’t too bad ye know. If you stand back an look you can see us Hoops are a cantankerous, fickle lot at times. Any of the articles lifted outta the Williamite press could have come from irate contributers to etims in the last coupla weeks. So what’s the craic, Ronnie might be a cunt, but he’s OUR cunt.

WGet Rogic on a new contract. He is the next big thing at CP.

Funkyy

@DantheMan…agreed, Rogic has shown that fully recovered from injury he offers a lot to the team. He has talent and is an asset..we are starting to see Ronny’s own team taking shape…hopefully, injuries permitting, we will get a period of stability in the team selection which will allow these guys to blend and make us stronger, especially in Europe.
If the media are worried and hurting now, imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth if we do well in the Europa this year and then qualify for the Champions next year. And at the same time Wobbly Buttons’ club goes tits up. The Clyde will be full of suicidal churnalists.

I see the Celtic board are still making an issue of paying staff their bonus, those staff who have been moved on to the living wage have been removed from the bonus scheme!!

Fucking outrageous, completely out of touch and Lawwell will walk away with his £1m salary + bonus?

I will give my money and groceries to the footbank collection outside the ground.

Lawwell you can stick your matchday ticket up your arse!

Monti

Peter Lawwell, each year Celtic fail to qualify for the CL, why don’t you pay your bonuses into a player fund?

No? Didn’t think so.

Well if the Support canny be arsed then I don’t see why he should be Monti.
At the kast count 3 people on here Donated a £5 when asked.
2 actually Donated £10.
If you really want to show the suits up you know what to do.
Donate £5 to the Celtic Foundation and put a wee *player fund comment on the bottm of it let them know why you did.
If you REALLY WANT TO CHANGE THINGS AT CELTIC do this first.
If not then expect more of the same.
I have.

Here’s the Link:
http://charity.celticfc.net/pages/donate

£5 each that’s all and we can change the path of Celtic for the betterment to us all.
The Foundation of course as a direct result get’s a massive boost to do wonderful things over Christmas.
1 million Tims each donate £5= That’s £5m for Charity at Christmas.
Think about what 9 million Tims could achieve if we all did this.
We could buy Celtic
We could set up a player Fund
We could if we wished return the Club to it’s original cause.
We could lead World Football as a shining example to others.
Think of the possibilities this could generate.
We could if we wished grab our destiny by the haw maws.
£5 from all of you out there and it could be done.
Charity begins at home they say well let’s put that theory to a genuine test and see where it takes us?
If not then expect NOTHING TO CHANGE.
Spend your Fiver on junk, fags,Kebabs,Petrol,Taxis o whatever other shite we all waste money on.
Just think about it… then click send.

Charlie,
Supporters already pay through the nose, you are wrong to be isolating some individuals for not paying £5 in to your idea.
So stop trying to bully folk into doing it!!

Have you considered that some fans may not have a £5 to give? Does that make them less of a fan if they want to but can’t afford to do it.

Your idea is a good one, but maybe you could drop the martyr bit now!

No Monti all I am doing is exactly what Celtic do every year to make you part with yours.
“believe” “more than a Club” etc etc etc.
All I am saying is if you truly want change then we need to be sending them a message.
Btw I should imagine if you are reading this then you have Internet access and as such can afford £5?
Now you can either pap your gums for the next 6 month moaning about this that and the next thing that you find wrong at Celtic or alternatively you can do fuck all and shut up.
Moaning changes fuck all mate.
Celts for change happened because folk got off their arse and did something.
Yes they moaned but THEY DID SOMETHING.
Your choice bud but know this if we all did this we would have a game changer on our hands.
That’s OUR HANDS.
Apparently passion is something only some are to be afforded in your world Monti?
Well I’m just as sick tied about our approach as the next man.
This is my way of showing my displeasure of the Corporate Greed at Celtic.
I don’t buy into their pish mate never have.

I’m happy with Ronny and how he is managing our younger players for the future. We also have Liam Henderson, Scott Allan and young Christie to look forward to.
Thursday night, I’m nervous but optimistic. I think the night in Molde was a one-off on a crap, slippery pitch which they were used to and we weren’t. We also know how they’ll play but I think we can surprise them. I hope Simunovic is fit. I’ve been pretty good with my recent predictions so here goes:
To the Bhoys 2-1. With nail-biting moments.
I think it is a disgrace that our club doesn’t pay a living wage. I’ve worked for less than a minimum wage a few times in my working life and it grinds you down as the bills pile up. It kills families too. It goes against our history as a club which should always favour its poorest citizens. I also believe many of our traditional fans are still struggling to pay the bills through no fault of their own.

You don’t get it bg do yo?
It’s the Foundation who receives the £5 not the Directors.
They can see it but they can’t touch it.
Now just imagine 1 million of us out here put a £5 in…
“Peter £5m just hit the Foundations Accounts..something to do with a player fund…”
Do you seriously think those in Control at Celtic are going to ignore such a thing?
They are Money men bud they will be like flies on a fresh turd.
You want to make changes at Celtic you need to go in there with the upper hand.
The fans that’s us the lifeblood of Celtic since it’s conception in 1887 have been the lifeblood.
All I ask is you and everyone else out there to do one simple act this Christmas.
DONATE £5 TO THE CELTIC FOUNDATION and make sure you mark it *Player Fund.
Peter Lawwell knows what that is.
Me and him had dialogue about it 4 year ago.
Time to shake the tree folks.
£5 that’s all it will take from each and everyone of us.
That Fiver will go to a great cause.

charlie, my post had fuck all to do with the ‘foundation’ im talking in general… no match tickets, no strips, nothing!!! our club doesnt need the money from a foundation….. i donate money to sciaf and cancer research i dont need to be putting extra money through a football club that i have already spent 3 or 4 hundred quid on this season… the club is financially sound at the moment…if they can pay a board member a million pounds a year then they can afford some extra charitable donations…. i want to put a point to you…. rather than us spending more money… what if we stop spending money?? will they get the message then? that tories are not welcome at our club? i know people will say were a club for all etc but do we want these people running our club? turning our club into a higher class playground? using working class money to there advantage? we shouldnt be run for profit… we shpuld be run for the fans by the fans as its our club, our money… a quality side on the pitch and charitable donations where we see fit…. break even every year and shove your profit up your arse as we dont see the benefit of it!!!

I agree with all of that but for one thing.
It’s not our Club bud.
If it was there would be no Bonus System.
Celtic would be a Charitable Club that uses a team to bring in the Funds.
That dream was sold up the Corporate River Decades ago bud.
We all of us have it in our own power to MAKE IT THAT.
By the way we are still paying off the Co-op mate £14.4m we owed them last Season.
