Celtic Diary Monday October 5: Amidst All The Fuss

Busy weekend in the world of football.

Dick Advocaat , who did as much as anyone to kill off Rangers, has quit his job as Sunderland manager, caiming someone poured lemonade over him and it just sort of snowballed from there.

Brendan Rogers, who refused the Chelsea job because he was building a career, has been sacked at Liverpool. Rogers, made an honorary scouser during his time up there, certainly got into the swing of things by stealing a living.

Jose Mourinho hasn’t gone yet, but he says he will as soon as he loses the dressing room.

There are stories that Derek McInnes up at aberdeen has lost the dressing room. His side suffered a humiliating third defeat in a row, this time to St. johnstone, who took five off Celtic’s main challengers.

With the anyone but Celtic mentality in the Scottish press, that result was too much for some to take;

Oh, well, it was fun while it lasted.

Looks like Barry “Baz” Ferguson was right all along.

Still, fair play to the Dons fans. They didn’t behave like fans of Old Rangers, tearing up towns and vomiting in the streets.

One or two were upset , though. But emergency services were on hand to help.

Next , McInnes, in line with the Ferguson article,  will go out and spend money he hasn’t got on players he can’t afford and hide the remonders from HMRC about the monthly direct debits which haven’t been paid. to challenge Celtic and improve Scottish football, of course.

Celtic responded yesterday with a hard fought 2-1 win over Hamilton in Lanarkshire. The relief felt by Ronny Deila was evident as he pumped his fists in delight at the final whistle.

Celtic had gone behind when Efe Ambrose was again posted missing at a Hamilton throw in, and Deydrck Boyata was forced to show he can make an arse of it as well, and Hamilton were one up.

But Celtic don’t have a problem coming from behind, and by half time Boyata, presumably thinking he was in his own half, managed to side foot an equaliser, and then little Leigh Griffiths scored another headed goal, which kind of negates any argument about his aerial ability.

Ronny deila has introduced the high pressing game into scottish football, but a number of sides has misinterpreted it, as they seem to pressure the player and not the ball. Hamilton were no different, and credit must go to Celtic for keeping the heid, although there were times when you longed for a Bertie auld or a Roy Aitken to hand out a wee bit of the rough stuff in the other direction.

Scott Brown can give a mean stare, but it’s hardly likely to frighten some six and a half foot meathead who’s been kicking lumps out of the wingers for an hour.

Hamilton away is a difficult game. Celtic did well to get a result.

So, the gap at the top is now down to just one point, and everything seems to be going to plan again.

Manager ronny Deila doesn’t seem to care. He’s looking at the big picture, the long term view;

“It’s very encouraging. We are breathing down their necks and will keep pushing.

It’s early to feel pressure. We have only played ten games. We will push on and talk at the end of March and see who is in the title race and who is not. ”

Complacency creeping in ? I hope not.

The international break has come at a time when the management can pause and reflect, taking a look back at what’s wrong and trying to fix it.

The primary problem is in defence. The centre halfs. Only Efe Ambrose has looked comfortable, but he makes everyone else uncomfortable.

Simunovic is injured, which in itself is a rather worrying reminder of one or two other signings…

The Croatian only made 32 and 30 appearances in the last two campaigns he had for Dinamo Zagreb, but there’s no record of any injury-at least that I can find-during his time there.

Yet he comes to Celtic, and hurts himself immediately.

Transfer market.com listed his value at £1,4m , and Celtic paid £5,5m for him. There is little or no record of any of his achievements. It’s inpossibe to find any articles about him from before our sudden interest.

The price itself is a mystery. When did Celtic start to sanction that sort of money ?

Maybe I’m just looking in the wrong places….or thinking the wrong thoughts.

But I am thinking that there’s something not right here.

sherlock_holmes_in_public-domain

Of course, I’m probably wrong. I usually am.

Someone who isn’t wrong is Peter Houston, manager of Falkirk , who fell prey to the unique style of refereeing teams encounter at Ibrox when the home side are struggling.

Listen to what he has to say here.

Houston on Referees

Whats interesting is that Warburton did his whinging behind closed doors, and thus escapes censure. houston, who was assistant to Craog Levein when the former Scotland boss had a rant during his time in club management about the same thing.

But it will all go unnoticed….

Won’t matter anyway.

By the way, it’s not just the first division the Ibrox side are in contention for-there’s another title they are making a strong showing for…

Today would have been Jock Steins ninety third birthday.

I’m going to quote Pat Crerand on the great man…

“I’ll tell you this, a hundred years from today all of us will be forgotten, no matter who we are and how important we think we are. No one will remember us. But Jock Stein will be remembered. He made Celtic, and he was the greatest manager Scotland ever produced. I’m just glad I have such great memories of the man.”

Caption competition ?

Well, why not ?

The Efe Ambrose going missing was tongue in cheek wasn’t it ? I know he is a scapegoat but accusing someone who wasn’t playing of going missing is a bit rich !

Barnes thought that one day he too would have his bust at Celtic.
Shame he made a right tit of himself instead.

I was at the game and the general opinion was that the result was all that mattered. The players found it difficult on that surface (at least the Celtic players!) and with tackles flying in, it was worth a Ronny roar.

If the defenders just concentrate on the basics till we get a bit of consistency in selection, we have enough in mid field and forward to see us through this ‘transitional’ period – at least domestically.

I think we deserve to be warned at the start of the diary if Mr Barnes is about to appear! – Barnes and bust!

Reading a few comments yesterday I was surprised some want to see Gordon dropped (rested?). At this time when our defence is chopping and changing so much we need as much consistency as possible, and I thought he was good yesterday making one great save admittedly their striker should have buried the rebound.
Felt sorry for Janko, clearly not fit but played ahead of the (also) unfit Lustig. I understand the need to protect players on the road to recovery but again it just creates inconsistency in selection. Defence should be left as untouched as possible, I hope this international break allows some players a bit of R&R to come back refreshed for the big push through to Christmas.

Your right Ralph.

Ambrose was f*cking anonymous at Hamilton on Sunday. Spent the 90 mins hiding.

Add that to us list of crimes and off to Botany Bay with him.

I think coming three days after a hard European tie, an early kick-off on a terrible surface against a physical side with a “weak” referee (how was that push on Emilio not a penalty?), it can be deemed a difficult game.

Down with that sort of thing

update on ronny’s man management skills…. as its the international break the players left at home usually get the thursday to the sunday off…. ronny (who is off all week btw) came into training raging and told the stay at home players that they no longer have thursday off, scuppering ready made plans for short vacations… this was every player except kris commons who was told he can still have the thursday off in front of everyone else!!! then the ‘scary’ gms walked into the managers office to complain about not seeing his gf and ronny gave him the day off!!! the guy is a clown!!!!

I m not too bothered with conspiracies normally, but have had my doubts about how we report our transfer fees for a while. Pukki £2.3m? Dont think so. Simunovic £5.5m? No, dont believe it. Are we quoting possible top end figures, *if* they win player of the year / *if* they get 25 international caps etc, as I dont believe our board currently pay out anything like this on tranfer fees. AS to why I can only assume its to do with what tzx the club has to pay etc, I m not suggesting Rangers levels of impropriety, and its something I wonder about with a lot of reported transfer fees, but are we being misleading inthe reporting, or off the record briefing for “undisclosed” fees to either make fans believe more is being spent athn asctually is or to reduce our tax bills by having future money written off against potential fees to pay on transfers – whihc never become active as the players are moved on?

Devoy45

If true, not good.I had the impression Ronny was good with players. The above example is not good management. Reminds me of a few arses I’ve had for gaffers in the past. bgbhoy, hope your sources are wrong, we don’t need a player revolt.

Devoy45

I meant to say that McInnes must be eating humble pie now. He has implied Deila has an easy job managing and winning with a big budget so what does he say to John Hughes or Tommy Wright about their “big” budgets? McInnes and Aberdeen have been stripping Inverness of its assets for many years now. Sevco has a much bigger budget than Tommy Wright does and….?
Old Rangers had a bigger budget to attract Laudrop and Gasgoigne—has former Ranger McInnes ever commented on bigger budget EBTs?

You’re a right Charlie.

I addressed your historic rumblings.

BR didn’t assign 3-5-2 since the first half of last season.
His main preferences were 3-4-2-1, 3-4-3, 4-5-1 and 4-3-3;even sometimes a 4-4-2 diamond (gasp!).

Let’s move on.

Now that Mick has cleared that up, maybe bgbhoy and charlie can take a step back and calm down now. I think that EVERY club has internal stuff that they would rather stays in the dressing room or training ground..and generally it does. I personally don’t like “sources” who obviously must be in a trusted position, but then go and reveal stuff to other people. Players get huffy nowadays if the manager cracks the whip, and a manager who is already under pressure to get better results (i.e. league, good Europa run and qualification to the Champions)has enough on his plate without trusted employees adding to the pressure by revealing internal details.
I don’t think anybody would have dared tell somebody outside the club “Big Jock shouted at us today and made us dae extra training”.

I know someone in the coaching staff who I occasionally have a drink with. He tells you nothing at least nothing of any importance. Is always happy to speak about how the team is playing but no juicy stuff. I don’t ask either.

nice of mick to post…. charlie ‘who never leaves a game early’ seems to have checked out of this discussion before the end.. i could say alot of shit that has went on in there over the las few years but dont, but when i hear something i believe is unjust and wrong and proving the manager to be out of place then i will share it… especially when theres such an ongoing discussion around the manager, is it fair that people that hold a high regard for him dont know everything that goes on? and im not being called a sevconian!!! hh

Maybe in some ways it doesn’t matter. We’ve all taken shit from bosses but that can sometimes make you do the job better just to get even. I guess we can only judge the man by results on the pitch. Letting Mackay-Steven and Commons off might be a good sign rather than a bad one. Dressing rooms all have a few cliques. For example, what good would Boerrichte or Stokes have to say about Deila? There are a lot of stories about Big Jock and they didn’t always reflect well on the Big Fella. Same about Sir Alec Ferguson. I’ll still give Deila the benefit of the doubt.

I’m with bondi. No only do we have more to bind us than we do to separate us, we’re on a public Celtic forum and I’d like to think we can discuss our differences with a bit less confrontation.. Most make good points (DH67 less so) and we don’t all need to agree, but what about a bit more respect for our fellow tims, both inside and outside CP.

Come on everyone, best fans in the world and all that….

I agree to acertain point Brendan because at the end of the day most of us are adults I’m guessing and so therefore can handle a wee bit of give and take when it boils down to it.
For me it take allof it as banter unless someone calls me a chunt or a hun then the gloves do come off and they are fair game.
I deploy a safeguard before I enter any forum or debate and that is Don’t ridicule others if you are not prepared to be ridiculed yersel.
So I generally give as good as I get within reason.
Some folk though need to go take a sweet beechams because they obviously cannot take a joke unless it’s been washed 10 times in a Politically Correct cleansing department first.
