The Pledge

Charlie Saiz sends us these words

On the 6th Day of November back in 1887
A young man from Ballymote in Sligo
Got a call direct from Heaven…
“You must start yourself a Football Team in Glasgows troubled East
For the maintenance of the poor and out of work
for they have no penny to feast”
So Marist Brother Walfrid went to help those in need
But to feed the mouths of many his plan it had to succeed
At St Mary’s Church in Calton was where it all began
A promise made by those who attended to do all they possibly can
John Glass and Brother Walfrid were to answer heavens call
By creating a special Club to go out and play Football
Celtic played their opening game 28th of May 1888
Up against a Rangers side revered as being great
The Bold Bhoys went out and showed their class
That wonderful day in May
McCallum opened the scoring of the 5 they scored that day
Dollan, Pearson,McLauchlin,Kelly ,Madden and Murray
Dunbar ,Gorevin two brothers from Cathcart
That’s Handsome Thomas and Willie Maley
By playing attractive football with passion without fear
The fans had paid their way they left with hope and cheer
2000 witnessed the magic and the weans would eat that day
The score did not really matter for they had created the Celtic Way
For the dinner tables were maintained the kids they had a feast
The sun had truly risen and shone brighter in the East
One can only imagine how those who answered Walfrids call
Would look upon the Celtic as we continue to play Football
Our Club became a giant both abroad and here at hame
It’s the club who that fed the many by simply playing a game.
To this day this Football Club still answers Walfrids call
To maintain it’s pledge of charity and remain a place for one and all.
